A renegade Time Lord with the handy
ability to regenerate himself crosses time and space battling evil
wherever he finds it.

10/9/00: Comedy series
Fawlty Towers may have topped a survey conducted by the
British Film Institute as the UK's favourite television show, but
Doctor Who was not far behind. 1600 volunteers from the
television industry took part in the poll, launched by chat show
host Michael Parkinson. The BBC featured heavily in the top ten,
including the 1966 ground-breaking documentary Cathy Come
Home, which is still used in education establishments today for
teaching purposes; and Doctor Who came third. Other shows in the
Top 10 included Monty Python's Flying Circus,
Parkinson and Blue Peter. Parkinson said, "The
particular significance of this list of programmes is that it
reflects the votes of the television industry - those involved in
programme-making - and they can be a tough audience to
satisfy."
John Teckman, BFI director, said, "The BFI TV 100 is a wonderful
celebration of quintessentially British programmes which have
entertained us over the years. It serves as a timely reminder that
we have a television heritage to be proud of."

17/06/00: The Guardian, a
UK newspaper, ran a feature on renewed plans for a big screen
Dcotor Who adventure, allegedly pushed through by recently
appointed BBC Director General Greg Dyke. Don't hold your breath
though: Doctor Who fans are used to such stories after many
aborted attempts to bring the Timelord to cinema screens.
SFX (September
1999) reported that the BBC were planning a big-budget comeback for
Doctor Who. Paul Event Horizon, Motal Kombat Anderson
revealed to Total Film that his next project would lilely be a
big-screen Doctor Who film. The BBC confirmed to SFX
that the plans were at a development stage with a top name drama
writer.
Previously: 27/03/00: UK newspaper The Guardian followed
up a report in Doctor Who Magazine that the Doctor is set to
make a return, courtesy of BBC Radio 4. No doubt prompted by the
success of the Big Finish audio dramas and previous audio exploits
of the Time Lord, the BBC have yet to commit to a new series
however. "We don't want to build up fans' hopes," a spokesperson
told The Guardian. However, we understand from our sources that this the much
hyped radio show is an internal pilot for consideration for full
production only, and is very unlikely to be transmitted.
The pilot script is by Dan Freedman and Colin Meak,
writers for Radio 4's
popular Loose Ends comedy show. Perhaps taking a leaf from
the Randall and Hopkirk Decesaed reveial Charlie Fast Show Higson,
Freedman told Doctor Who Magazine: "This will not be a
comedy show. I'm keen to develop a new take, to bring forward
darker aspects of the character." This could mean a comeback for
Seventh Doctor Sylvster McCoy, whose incarnation was 'killed off'
for the less than spectacular Doctor Who TV Movie which starred
Paul McGann.
Big
Finish Productions are releasing new Doctor Who
adventures on CD. The Sirens of Time starring Peter Davison,
Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy was the first in the series. Former
Doctor Who Magazine Editor Gary Russell produced the
CD.

Cast
Information
Doctors
William Hartnell has passed on. His last Doctor Who
appearance was The Three Doctors. Richard Hurndall
played The First Doctor in The Five Doctors, and is again no
longer with us.
Patrick Troughton has passed on, dying at a
Who convention in the US. His last Doctor Who
appearance was The Two Doctors, alongside Frazer Hines (Jamie)
Colin Baker (No.6) and Nicola Bryant (Peri).
Jon Pertwee has
passed on. He was a terrific actor and a marvellous raconteur who I
met on several memorable occasions, particularly in Indiannopolis
for a UNIT reunion convention.

Tom Baker has not passed on, though he often comes
across as being rather obsessed by death. His house is near a
graveyard.
27/03/00: Tom Baker featured in a This is Your Life
screened on BBC1 after the first episode of the new Randall and
Hopkirk Deceased series, in which he plays the recurring guest
star, Wyvern. That series has been renewed for a second
run.
Peter Davison continues to regale us with his
regular performances on the small screen and in February 2000 even
managed to break out of his Campion-style character strait
jacket mould in the recent At Home with the Braithwaites. He
must have been relieved by the change. I was.
Colin Baker, a totally underestimated Doctor
Who thanks to the series' treatment by the BBC during his
tenure, has reprised hus role for the Big Finish audio
dramas.
Sylvester
McCoy, the last regular Doctor, has also reprised his role and
is often seen on stage around the UK.
Paul McGann, who starred in the dreadful TV Movie,
has indicated he would like another crack at the role. His doctor
is the one used most regularly in Doctor Who Magazine and he
will feature in new audio dramas from Big Finish,
scheduled for release in 2001
Nicholas Briggs was never an official Doctor but
has appeared so many times in print as the Ninth incarnation it
would be churlish not to mention him here! (And besides, he's good
bloke).
