The Orellian System: Charan
Last Updated: 29 March 2000

It is nearly always winter on Charan but it is beautiful world for all its harshness. Thanks to its proximity to Orell, tourism has become a prevalent business here, in addition to exploration for natural resources.

The origin of the planet's wintry climate does not appear to be completely natural, as with much of the climes of the planets of the Orellian system. Indeed, if the cold was a natural state then this would not explain the presence of the tribes of primitive hominoid hunter gatherers which roam its snowy wastes, or the presence of fish in the shallow seas which are almost completely covered in ice for much of the year. If the planet's state was a natural one only basic life would have evolved. such as anaerobic microbes.
Scientists suspect that as with other planets the aliens which sought to re-engineer their solar system and turn it into a Dyson Sphere encountered opposition to the plan and a period of war prefaced the creation of the globe-connecting tube system.

Life on the surface of Charan is harsh, with the slow orbit of the Orellian system, and the even slower solar orbit making seasons uncompromisingly long. The Human colonists who arrived here established the first colony, Cicely, at a point where there was at least some seasonal change through the solar year, meaning the colony benefits from a summer where the outside temperatures occasionally rise above zero degrees!

Colonized some 400 years after the arrival of Humans in the Orellian system, Charan's icy wastes proved attractive only to the hardiest of settlers, who found the indigenous hominoid sentients less than receptive to their arrival. Although some of the native Charans now mix readily with Humans the alliance is often fragile, and recent mining and drilling for natural resources has been known to provoke attacks on outlying settlements.

So 'natural' is Charan that it is believed small settlements of Luddites, who believe the tube system should be dismantled and the Orell System returned to its natural state, live outside the established colonies in concealed Conclaves.

This meeting place is a hive of activity and gossip, where explorers and traders haggle for goods and information before they set out to explore the planet's surface. The owner, Drezek, is a known Luddite who cares little for Offworlders, favouring the harshness of his home planet for the comforts of Orell or Aqua. He is frequently rude to visitors and only grudgingly acknowledges that they keep him in business.

The Comics Conundrum: Gathering Place
Fans of visual strip material have made Charan their meeting place. What brings comics fans to Charan no-one is quite sure, but some suggest comics fans were hoodwinked into purchasing a property on the planet, thinking they were really buying into the more appealing world of Harvax. By the time they arrived to claim their property the seller had already disappeared with their purchase tokens.

Cicely Convenience Stores
Tourism means the planet boasts some fine stores, despite its freezing outside temperatures. Sports and winter clothing are obviously popular, as are resource detectors, pick axes, climbing equipment etc.
The Charanese also sell rare and beautiful jewellery, carved from the precious stones created by the incredible pressures the ice fields have exerted on the planet's underlying rocky surface.
