Cancellations
Amazing Stories: Ansible reports that Amazing Stories which published several original Babylon 5 stories by J. Michael Straczynski, is to be dropped by its publishers Wizards of the Coast after the current Summer 2000 issue. Assets and inventory are being sold to Ben Bova's Galaxy Online.
Science Fiction World folded after the September-dated Issue 4.
Ansible reported that editor Steve Holland says: "The reason was a lousy level of advertising revenue which could not support the magazine. The state of magazine publishing in the UK is terrible, and most titles are reliant on their advertisers ... and unfortunately they weren't there for us. [...] I was more disappointed than shocked. The decision was made long before the publisher would have had sales figures for Issue 3 (with the reduced price), so we'll never know whether we could have survived on sales alone. We ran a very tight ship when it came to our editorial budget and still managed to get a lot of first-rate features.
"With that in mind, I hope that other publishers don't look on this as proof that an SF magazine can't survive in today's market.

VZSciFi Doctor Who Guide
A Cybermen special with features on the cyborgs, an archive on Tom Baker's encounter with them in Revenge of the Cybermen, a guide to Gallifrey, an interview with Sarah Berger, who played a Cryon in Colin Baker's Attack of the Cybermen. David Howe's fascinating series on the history of Doctor Who in print continues with the books' arrival in the US. Plus news and reviews. Sadly, while Scott Gray brings us another well-written strip editor Alan Barnes has made the misguided decision to use artist Roger Langridge on the strip. Langridge is an excellent cartoonist and his one shot strips for DWM have always amused, but his style unfortunately lacks the gravitas I feel the main strip deserves.

Starburst Special #45
Publisher: Visual Imagination, 9 Blades Court, Deodar Road, London SW15 2NU.
Web: http://www.visimag.com/starburst
A Star Trek special featuring a fine appraisal of the condition of the franchise, asking the pertinent question: do we really want/need another Star Trek series? Plusa season six Voyager episode guide, the babes of Star Trek, Star Trek on film... rounding off the issue are some interesting items on Earth: Final Conflict and SF in James Bond. The Bond item is pretty fab since it includes some nice sixties Bond promo art and plenty of pics - and is a far more interesting piece than the Trek guff used to sell the issue. But if you can put Seven of Nine of the cover of a magazine then that's what will sell it, not Mr. Connery!

Part-originated, part sourced from Star Wars Insider UK-based title. On sale bi-monthly in the UK and Eire only. Publisher: Titan Magazines, 144 Southwark Street, London SE1 0UP. Contact Information Here
Pulling the interviews from Star Wars Insider, including their items "Hayden Christensen: The New Anakin", "Ralph McQuarrie & Doug Chiang: Master meets Apprentice", Star Wars Magazine easily has enough localised UK content to make it a worth while magazine purchase for fans. The news section is much stronger than SWI, and the design far superior, while the Jawas merchandise section provides a wealth of new product information. You'll occasionally find SWM and SWI published near simultaneously and this is certainly one of those occasions. Each have their own strengths but this is one part-reprint title that easily makes the best of the material available.
Next issue on sale: December/January
