Rebels, Pirates and Tentacles: The Story of LucasArts

Rebels, Pirates and Tentacles: The Story of LucasArts

It's been a while since I last posted anything on here. I've been working on a bunch of stuff behind the scenes (most notably in our Discord server) and haven't been able to push out all of the stories I've been working on, but there's a bunch of upcoming content you won't want to miss.

In the meantime, I'd like to share something really cool with you.

During researching something completely unrelated, I came across the Kickstarter page for something called Video Games: Stage 3 and The Story of LucasArts. Given the LucasArts connection to Lucasfilm's Habitat, it piqued my interest.

Avatars hang out in a room discussing the end of Lucasfilm's Habitat. The room is blue, with candelabras on the wall, a ghost icon in the top left and a bar with stools out in front of it.

After reading the description for the book, it turns out that the author, Andrea Contato, is writing a chapter specifically on Habitat which was so great to see.

Part of the reason I started this site was not only to document and archive everything about Habitat, WorldsAway, etc but also to correct any misinformation that was out there which is what happens when you've got 30/40 years of informational drift and context loss.

The unused mockup for the Habitat box artwork for a physical release that never happened. It's often incorrectly attributed to artist Ken Macklin who did provide some artwork for Habitat, but the true artist is unknown. A perfect example of some of the misinformation out there.

There have been other books published detailing the history of LucasArts previously that whilst they were great overall, had a lot of misinformation and errors.

For this reason, I got in touch with Andrea and offered to help fact check anything and he sent me back a really nice email that made me think this is definitely going to be a good read.

You can read a sample chapter which details the early days of Lucasfilm and its fledgling Games Group. You can see it's really well written and a lot of love has been put into making sure the research is on point.

You can bet the chapter on Habitat is going to be of equal quality.

If you are here, although our shared interests converge around Habitat and WorldsAway most likely, I'd be willing to bet there's a lot of crossover with video game fans who grew up on or around the classic offerings of Lucasfilm Games and LucasArts.

If you'd like to back the Kickstarter for Andreas book, you can do so over at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1108065491/video-games-stage-3-the-story-of-lucasarts

The project is already fully funded and smashing its stretch goals. It's available in both English and Italian.
