Uncle Fortisquew and Forthero report a teddy-mangling dragon ... which is bad fortune enough, but whatever *is* that item whose very ID sent them scrambling ... ?? We don't know the answer to that (yet), but I for one gave my baby bear and my Torgerson an extra hug after putting the paper to bed tonight, and promised them all manner of fun and frolic at this weekend's Teddy Bear Picnic. Oh, do those bears love picnics! The food! The games! All their teddy friends and family! Of course >>ahem<< I'm not about to let them go all by themselves ... I want some of that picnic food, too, ya know! ;) In other news this week, we have to report that We Goofed. There was some confusion over the date for claiming last week's Hidden Contest Prize. ::gulp:: We meant to say *Thursday* the 30th, not Tuesday the 30th. We apologize, and we're nailing calendars to the walls of the Kymer Clarion offices, as reminders to ourselves that it is THURSDAY that comes after Wednesday. Usually. We're pleased to report, also, that, building on the success of the waking-world WA Gathering in Pennsylvania last month, more gatherings of the ratavas are in various stages of planning. So far, we count three: one planned for California (in September), one in the midwest (Chicago), and another in the UK. There's an announce- ment of the UK Convention in these pages; be sure to let Menolly know of your interest! And keep your eyes peeled for further information about all the Gatherings in future issues! --------------------------------------------------------------------- CORRECTION: Correct Hidden Puzzle Date by Milen --------------------------------------------------------------------- The date mentioned in the rules for the Hidden Contest was incorrect; the 30th is a Thursday, not a Tuesday. The time of the contest is THURSDAY, May 30th, between 7 and 8pm WAT. Also there has been a little bit of confusion over the objective of the contest. To elaborate: somewhere in the previous issue of the Clarion is a clue to where you have to be at the above mentioned time. I cannot give any further clues than that except that it is in a turf. * Milen --------------------------------------------------------------------- SEEN ON THE STREET by Rosaleah and Marianne G --------------------------------------------------------------------- You've heard of the Doublemint Twins? Kymer does that one better, with its own KymerMint Triplets! We even have their picture! See MINT3.GIF here in the Newsstand! We've noted that Elevator1 in the turf building gets to be quite a crowded locale, especially since that's the elevator that's used as avatars leave their turfs. Sometimes we think there's a hidden soapbox (in the drawer of that table, maybe? Or lurking behind the spittoon?) in the area, because folks seem to like to stop there and address the audience of ghosts passing through the locale on their way to Elevator2 or Elevator3, generally freer for use. What, by the way, *is* that planted in the pot by the third elevator? We were wondering if it was something that the Orbitron brought in ... it looks so strange. Of course, the lobby of the turf building has become quite a gathering place as well. The other night, we spotted BrownEyedGirl and Robynn there, showing off their voodoo dolls. We understand HyJinks was sufficiently unnerved by the sight of not one but two of those dolls that he was ready to head for the woods ... just in case. Have you met Goliath? Goliath is Kermit's fly. Make that plural. Kermit has a good thing going here: he rents out his mouth to Goliath for 200T a month. Thing is, he can't help occasionally swallowing Goliath. *After* the rent has been paid, of course. Poor Goliath. Kermit says there've been 65 Goliaths this month alone. Still, the current Goliath greets folks pleasantly enough. And we hear Kermit's turf rental is paid up well in advance! To say nothing of being well fed! We hear that wedding bells will be ringing on July 6th for Princess Lovely II and Stupid. Do you agree with us that Stupid will have to change his name now? I mean ... he can't possibly *really* be _Stupid_ to have captured the heart of Princess Lovely, now can he? ** Congratulations ** to them both! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Letter to the Editor: A Theft Bex --------------------------------------------------------------------- Editors, I would like to tell you about my robbery the other day. My turf was burgled and some items stolen. In an effort to help a newbie last night, as one does, I helped her buy a turf and then offered to give her my spare turf sprays. She came to my turf to collect them, and the thief arrived soon after. It came about because of the esp default message. This is where a thief esp's a newbie to say "hello", and the newbie innocently esp's them back saying "greetings from locale..." (in this case with my Turf name). The thief boasted of his crime soon afterward ... but what made it possible, I believe, was that default message, which I think should be changed. I for one have never seen anyone use this default message on purpose as it seems such an impersonal way of greeting friends. I believe that this (unnessessarily clever in software terms) default message is dangerous now that we have our turfs, and would ask all of you to support me in making the software team change this default message to a simpler greeting that does not include the location name. I realise that many others have been stolen from and that I won't be the last, but this could stop some damaging future thefts if implemented. -- Bex [Editor's reply: You know, I've never known anyone to actually use that default message, either. It does seem so impersonal. Perhaps a better default message would be in order (if there must be a default). Does anyone have any suggestions for a different default? Or do you agree that one isn't needed at all? We'd be interested in hearing from you about this!] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ First Worlds Away U.K. Convention! by Menolly ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There has been some discussion recently in the WA Forum about the possibility of arranging a Worlds Away Convention this year. So far, at least 16 people have expressed an interest. We would like to see more! We have no idea as yet where the event would take place, it all depends which will be the easiest location for everyone to get to. If there are any interested U.K. residents out there, please will you let me know by e-mail.. Please tell me the area you live in. We will be holding an InWorld meeting soon to discuss ideas. I will let you know the day and time. You will not be committing yourself to anything by attending. Hoping to hear from lots of you. Menolly. You knew who these first-nighters were by the tokens they held tightly in their hands: 25 tokens each for tickets at the door. When the doors finally opened, there was quite a rush to pay and take a seat in the ghost cloud above the stage. We got there in time to see the stagehands bring out the simple yet highly effective decorations: ferns to represent the forest and forest path, and a gingerbread house that was the perfect setting for Grandma's encounter with the wolf. Acolyte Serena narrated from the story recorded in the red book she held in her hand as she stood off to the bottom right side of the stage. SunRay Love, as the Mother, entered, and gave her instructions to Little Red Riding Hood, delightfully played by Golden Knight-Alaysa. Next on the scene was Princess Toadstool as the crafty wolf. This reviewer was impressed by the good use of color, as the wolf changed clothing to look more like Grandma (also ably played by Sunray Love), and of the clever foxy wolf's head that could look both friendly (when meeting Little Red Riding Hood in the forest) and chillingly menacing (when eyeing Little Red Riding Hood and chasing her all over Grandma's House and the woods!) The Therese head for Grandma seemed the perfect choice. Congratulations are certainly in order here for the costumers, as well as the actors! The wolf's dastardly plans were duly destroyed by the hunter, played by Caspir, and all *cheered* the entire cast and crew as the play drew to a close. Oracle Uni came out of the ghost cloud to congratulate Dot Warner and the cast, as Dot announced plans for future productions. It was also noted that, thank Morpheus, the wolf had not *really* been harmed and would, in fact, be back in a planned production of the Three Little Pigs. All the wolf's friends breathed sighs of relief at the news! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Announcing: Second Teddy Bear Picnic! by Gillian and Acolyte Milen -------------------------------------------------------------------- Come one, come all, whether beBEARed or BEARron, to the Second Teddybear Picnic, to be held in Meditation Park on June 1st from 1 to 3pm WAT! Please see the following authorized individuals and accept no other offers: Brains, Wing Commander Raptor, Duckolyte Sr. Wing Askani, Duckolyte Sr. Wing A list will be posted in the forum of all the items up for grabs. The Duckolyte Auction is an event you don't want to miss. Sincerely, Raptor, Duckolyte Sr. Wing --------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposing: Phantasus Better Business Service by Jaeger --------------------------------------------------------------------- A Better Business Bureau for the Dreamscape? The idea caught my eye a few weeks ago. I kinda jumped into the forum discussion and received a surprising (to me) amount of private mail/e-mail, some encouraging the project, some wondering what it would do, and a few thinking it would be a waste of time. Would you like to be able to find out the track record of a business or individual before you deal with them? Would you like to find out if they've fairly treated their previous customers? Would you like to have a truly neutral source of such information? After consideration, I think the best way would be to start small, and see how this evolves. So, with this in mind, I'll suggest an informational service, rather than a full-blown BBB. Because I have hope that it will evolve, I'd want to start off calling this the Phantasus Better Business Service (PBBS). Until we see if this service is of any use to the community at large, I'd be volunteering my time and effort. If this turns out to be useful, the Businesses might be asked for a token fee. The Service to customers will *always* remain free of charge. How will this work? Here's my starting point. PLEASE give me some feedback, everyone. {F7} 1) *Any* Business/Individual providing services to the public may register with the PBBS. To register, please e-mail me some or all of the following: a) a 'mission statement'. This would be a *short* paragraph explaining why the business exists. A minimal amount of advertising would be acceptable, but nothing referring (directly or indirectly) to the competition. I.E., you could say "providing Kymer's best Auction services", but not say "providing better Auction services than X's Auction House". b) A statement as to how you conduct business. I.E., regularly scheduled events, random events, ESP me IW, Business hours in what turf, etc. c) Special items of note. For an example, please see the last few lines that Clover has been posting in her advertisement, explaining her 'rules of the house'. c) Complaint procedures, if any. d) List of Avatars involved. CI$ User ID's optional. e) Other information you feel is pertinent. I would consolidate this info from all registered sources, and for the time being, post a file containing this info to the library, updating it as necessary. Registered Businesses would be required to contact the PBBS once a quarter, either via ESP or E-mail, to assure that the business was still in operation. 2) Customers would be able to e-mail me a short paragraph about their positive experiences, or a slightly longer one if they had a problem. Businesses would be notified when this occurred. If the two parties were able to patch things up, the information contained by the service would be modified as the two parties agreed. If they could not come to an agreement, then the Business would be requested to file a short statement of 'their side' of the disagreement. (That would be the end of that incident. There will be no 'back and forthing". You state your complaint, the business gets one crack at its response. End of Story) This info would also be consolidated and posted as a file to the library. 3) Both files would be freely available through the library. PBBS will offer mediation (not arbitration) if both parties wished. PBBS will *not* accept complaints regarding businesses who have not registered. PBBS is not intended to be a complaint desk regarding thieves, nor a repository for personal hate and/or grudges. Only complaints about service and/or business transactions of registered businesses will be posted to the library. I expect some brave/brazen thieves may register as "sellers of rare goods". {F8} That would be supported. However, if they mistreat their customers, complaints would be taken at that point, and only for that mistreatment. I would SUGGEST <*looking for feedback here*> that at the most, one line similar to "This business has been accused by X avatars of trafficing in stolen goods, Names/UID's of the accusers are available upon request" may be added. Again, this is an information service. I have no wish to get the PBBS involved in the "Is thievery to be condoned?" issue. Anonymous complaints/praise, or business registration will not be taken by PBBS, for a number of reasons that should be obvious. However, the CI$ UID could be kept out of the public data files, if requested. (and the registration / praise / complaint would hopefully be weighted by the reader, as appropriate). Yes, you'd have to trust me as far as the UID secrecy. If you are concerned about this, please contact me via e-mail or ESP. There are two ways I can try to answer your concerns. PBBS will not offer any judgements as to the validity of the complaints / praise, nor the worthiness of the Businesses. It will start off as a simple respository of information. PBBS reserves the right to censor offensive language, (such that you wouldn't want your 6 year old infantar to hear) I.E., Carlin's 7 words. For example, your strong complaint that "The PBBS is run by a ******* idiot" will be posted that way, but with words that FCT/CI$/FCC would dissaprove of being masked. Please contact me if you wish to register, have complaints/praise about a business, have a question, a suggestion, or other feedback. Yours in the hope of a better Dreamscape Jaeger, Phantasus Better Business Service (PBBS) --------------------------------------------------------------------- --_^+^_-- GAMES AND GAMING --_^+^_-- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Teddybear Story Contest Ending by Milen --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Teddybear story contest comes to an official end on Friday, May 31st. We decided that rather than run tie breaker questions this week, we would reward both 4th place finishers. This week's topic is back to "Duck Soup". "Duck Soup" will cover questions on a broad base of topics. Door prizes were given out as usual, but this week a special one was given out. A two-room turf paid up through next month was given to "Demon". In addition, a decorating allowance of three hundred tokens was provided as well. Congratulations "Demon". **** Special Prize **** This month's Grand Prize will be a very special head from the Oracles themselves. Last month was a specially engraved Tulip Head for the occasion. We narrowed the field down some after these races. Previously, SR Mage CyberMage was tied with Necrolyte Xian, and both had Skandranon breathing down their necks. Winning one race each on the 20th were Golden Knight TrAx taking home some flowers, Necrolyte Xian for 50T, Headless Horseman for Hot Choclate, Necrolyte Benny for 100T, Kira for 100T and Daz Dogg took home a fern. Winning two each were Piemur-2 for 50T and a Rose Head, painted non- vendo white, Meridiene for 50T and a valentine and SR Mage CyberMage taking away 50T and some non-vendo green paint. That puts SR Mage CyberMage in sole first place, with 6 wins, and Necrolyte Xian is behind with 5 wins. Match MAYker, Match MAYker make me a match, find me a find, catch me a catch.... or, not having a Match MAYker here in Kymer, you could have come to the Bloodline Match MAYker event for May, and either picked from three unseen candidates, or been one of the three picked from. Yes, it was based on the old Dating Game TV Show, and I've been asking for volunteers here in the CLARION for months! We finally get under way, and many of those who signed up, did not show up. All I can say is it's a good thing I don't have my ponytail head yet, or I would have pulled it off in frustration.... but the show must go on, and thanks to those who filled in at the last minute, and I'm glad you all had fun. We gave away three dream dates... A, B and C that were picked by the guests AFTER they picked their mystery date. First up was our intrepid bachelor Raptor, Duckolyte Sr. Wing, who was very brave to volunteer to support the event. He had asked, however, that it was announced that he was already taken, so nothing would come from the date but friendship.... which this skull head did do ;;evil grin;; and now the rest of the story.... I knew his girlfriend would be in the audiance, I hoped she would, and I wanted to save the two ladies who had asked to be part of it, and who had come early to be part of it, for the next two dates, so they could be sure to win as the questioner.... this left me a tad short on females to answer the questions of Raptor. Not to worry, oh Sassy, how would you like to be one of the three vying for a date with Raptor, your honey? Natch, we didn't tell Raptor this..... until the end ;;evil laugh;; I had no way of knowing which of the three contestants Duckolyte Sassy Wild Cat would end up as, since BLD Quackers took them out of sight and to the back where answers from them were relayed back to me, the bachelor, and the audiance. She assigned the numbers to the contestants, which besides Sassy, were Marrante and Aurora Borealis. Course, since everyone entered Dreamland as a ghost, no one knew who was there to play anyway! Raptor asked a few questions... the contestants answers were relayed via BLD Quackers and myself, it was time to make a choice. Raptor told me later that though the decision was hard, he had basically made up his mind after the second question. First we told him what we had done... then let him sweat it out, (heck, I was too) while we introduced the dates he DID NOT pick. Lucky for both of us, when they were down and receiving their consolation prizes (roses in a vase), the one date still up there was Sassy... yep, he did manage to pick his own girlfriend for his dream date! Then he picked date B, and they were off in the Bloodline Limo to be taken away to a week at a Spa Resort. Yep, nothing like fresh air, pure water, a nice workout, and healthy living to bring a couple together! Which brought us to our second phase of the competition. This time, Bionic Woman was up, and she got to choose between three hidden males. Competing for a date with her were Deven, KOOL72 and Freud. It was another hard decision, but finally Freud won the date with the lovely lady, and it was time for her to pick a letter for one of the two remaining dates. Picking C, she won the major prize package... a date floating down the Tunnel of Love! Yes, our Limo service whisked her and her date off to a ride of romance. Which left us Mistweave's Ego and the last date package, an Island Beach Resort, but who would she share it with? The three she was to pick from were Grey Gandalf, OM and Daryl Van Horn, and it was the little devil Van Horn who won the ladies heart. Off they went in the limo to their dream destination. Will we do this again? If so, I'm going to charge the contestants a fee, to insure they show up on the designated date and time. For now, this skeleton is signing off to refill my valium prescription. I just can't take these nerve wracking events.... I'm going back to CHAOS! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- +-- :) POETRY AND PROSE (: --+ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ARRIVAL by Marianne G ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slowly she opened her eyes to the bright sunlight .... her head hurt, her whole body hurt. Where was she? With the greatest of care, she raised her aching body and looked around. She was laying on a beach with the tide lapping over the bottom part of her body..... her hand clutched a tattered headband with a pathetic feather, wet and crumpled. Her clothing was in shambles, testiment to the salt water that she must have been submerged in recently. With great care, she raised herself to her feet, clutching at a head that felt as if it were to split soon. How did she get here? Where was here? And, most importantly, who was she? The name Kristi sprung into her mind, but from where? An answer to her last question? The sand stretched from Horizon to Horizon in both directions .... the sea was to one side, and a teaming jungle to the other. She definately did not like the looks of the jungle .... it was probably safer to stick to the shore, and so she did. Not knowing what had occurred, or what could happen, she randomly chose one direction, and headed off across the sand, leaving the crumpled headband behind..... Morning had turned to afternoon, and the sun was getting warm when she finally spied some buildings up ahead. She had arrived ... someplace! Despite her aches, she quickened her pace and came upon a fenced-in area that had crates and buildings filled with crates all around ... there seemed to be no people around, however. She went searching through the crates on the outside, and then she started randomly searching the buildings--still no people. Finally she came to a building with a sign over it announcing, MAIN IMPOUND AREA. As she walked through the door she saw it: A CHOKE Machine, in perfect condition, barring a few dents ... I KNOW THIS! There was one in the arcade in .... in .... Oh where did I come from!?!?!? Will this stranger ever find her way into the city? Will she recover her memory? And who is this mysterious stranger? Stay tuned to future issues of the KYMER CLARION to find out! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Uncle Fortisquew Continues His Journeys: by Elly Jelly Kelly Journal of the Exploration of the East of Phantasus ===================================================================== DAY 32: ======= The strangest things have been happening just recently at the Club 18-30 Archaeological Site.... It began a week ago. I was doing an idle turn about the promenade and I met one of the Duckolytes from my party gazing strangely over the lake. Initially, this did not surprise me, as he was given to gazing strangely. "Get bally well back to work" I quipped in my usual genial and fatherly tone. The Duckolyte ignored this, as he usually did. "Oooh look - someone on the other side of the basin!" he said - and pointed out something that looked like a dark coloured kite floating in the breeze above the tree tops. "It's probably that darn mule skiving work again" I said dismissively, "I'll see to him later". The incident was then forgotten until that night, when Forthero denied everything and provided several witnesses to say he was not mucking about, but actually studying the Sauna when the incident occurred. Then, in the middle of the night, Topsy Bowels woke us all up in a great tizz, screaming that her rare Torgeson Teddy was gone - disappeared - taken from her arms while she slept, and she ran around accusing EVERYONE of taking it though she knew only too well we could have only taken it if she had let go and she would NEVER have done that - always sleeping with her face buried in it and sucking her thumb. But of course there was an inquest - all pockets and chests were searched and in the course of the investigation it was discovered that EVERYONE's teddies were missing - Torgerson or otherwise. This made me very uneasy - for though I know all my party are bally idiots, I would always say they are as honest as the Eurovision Song Contest is long. "Well, theft out of pockets is a physical impossibility for all avatars", I pointed out, "therefore Forthero must have done it - as other non-avatar rules have been applicable to him, making a pick- pocketing option likely." And we all stood round him in a circle frowning, while Forthero calmly announced that he didn't even have the Put Into> option, being a fourlegged beast of burden with no pockets, so why should he _possibly_ have a pick-pocket option. We all grudgingly conceded and returned to our rooms to bed, a thorough search being planned for the next day. In the morning - we combed the resort from top to bottom and no sign of the teddies was found. Giving up around lunch-time, we returned the work of studying the site. My own particular area of study was the peculiar temple found half way up the rock face above the resort which Forthero pointed out when we first arrived. This temple is in quite a different style to the rest of the resort (which is built with the standard Kymerian architecture) and can only be described as "Real World Gothic". Chiselled out of the cave walls - with a huge central alter at the back of it - it is here that over FIVE HUNDRED teddy skeletons were found (which I had been bagging and cataloguing because they seem to show a definite evolutionary trend - and seem to cover a period of thousands of years!). Overall it was rather bizarre annexe to a place dedicated to mindless titillation of the bodily senses (unless sacrificing teddies to unknown gods was an old world standard inclusion in your average package tour). Anyway - I made my slow tiring way up to the temple on Forthero's back - and when we arrived we found all my carefully bagged skeletons all torn and scattered around...and...lay across the central back alter....the dismembered remains of our own teddies. Forthero put a hoof to his mouth and staggered backwards with a moan - causing me to fall off him onto the ground. "Oh my Dear fat Aunt" I murmured to myself after I had sat up and adjusted my monocle. Forthero turned and shook his head. "Look it wasn't me!" he started saying, backing away from me "I have witnesses to prove that...urgh". He turned round. His back hoof was stuck in some huge heap of damp papery stuff. It smelt bad - and looked like a vast lizard shedding. I stood up slowly and looked about. "Forthero...maybe...we should..." I began somewhat nervously. Forthero wetted his lips and swallowed. "What? Like...run away?" he said. "No, no...just move camp rather hastily...er...after all...it is time we were moving on...leave this place to the proper archaeologists, ay what?" "NO! NO! Don't you SEE!!!" gasped Forthero, all wild-eyed with excitement. "Yes I see - we have a pervert wandering this basin. A teddy murdering Kite flying maniac! First the teddies - next us I say." "No! We have a...." Forthero started pacing up and down in excitement, "a..a dragon!" he said in awed lower-case. I just stared at him. "Yes! Do you realise - a dragon has been in our camp at night and took our teddies! It has left us unharmed and JUST TOOK OUR TEDDIES!" Forthero panted. "We might be the first avatars in centuries that has first hand interaction with a DRAGON!!". "So we could trap it using teddies as bait and shoot it then?" I asked, slightly interested now. Forthero stormed over and boxed my ears. "You do and I'll have you stuffed and mounted too" he growled. I stroked my chin, and then marched off towards the far end locale of the cave, with my pickaxe in my hand. "Fortisquew?" called out Forthero. "Treasure my lad, treasure!" I ESPed gleefully, and started feeling the floor and walls round the altar - looking for a trapdoor or secret passageway. I hunted all afternoon and evening. Clicked on everything, tried every pop-up option for everything. No treasure, no secret passages, nothing. It was late evening and the sun was going down when I finally collapsed in a frenzied heap of vanquished greed - mouse and keyboard sweaty. Forthero - who had been sunning himself at the mouth of the cave all the while, casually wandered into the locale to mock me. "Serves you right - how could you THINK of plundering a poor innocent dragon of its hoard?" he said. "Oh shut up" I growled, swept the altar clear of stuffing and teddy limbs and put my pick-axe down on it. A click and a low grinding sound was heard. A door opened in the back wall of the altar and I jumped and cheered and called out all manner of abuse at Forthero. "Don't go in Fortisquew" begged Forthero, "Just turn your back and leave it. You will regret it if you go in you know!" he warned me. I ignored him and passed tentatively through the door.... Tokens! I have never seen so many tokens! And heads! Pharaoh heads and Tulip heads and Fly and Pencil heads and Pony-tail heads and wondrous objects - sofas and books and clothes and toilets. I stood and beheld. Forthero eventually came through and stood with me in silence for many, many minutes - just clicking on the objects and marvelling at their ID's.... "Lets go now" ESPed Forthero eventually. "Never in a million years Mule!" I ESPed back, "And why are you ESPing...". "No...really...I think we should go" ESPed Forthero again, "Just click on that head on the far right of the screen...." he added. I did...it I.D.ed as... "Oooooh nooooo" I groaned. The screen faded - and we were back at the resort entrance locale with a single telling message... [You have been asked to leave by the owner] We were de-camped and gone within the hour. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Poetry Pantry Readings Dream Keeper --------------------------------------------------------------------- Inspired by poetry readings?
