Unfortunately, I just haven't been able to get that going because I'm only one person and can only do so much. So imagine my thrill upon receiving Princess Di's mail this week asking if I'd be interested in including a "Social Registry" in ESP! Princess Di has accepted the position of Social Editor and will be responsible for the new "Social Registry" section. This will include the "Singles" listings and as the section is developed, we'll also be trying to get info on the engagements, weddings and divorces. It might even include a little gossip now and then. This will be a big job for Princess Di so if you'd be interested in helping her by gathering information and writing for the section, please let her know! {!} - From the Event Editor's Desk - {!} By Sweet Suz Well we are back! Good Luck to All, This Week In Phantasus! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Cover Story ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Dreamscape on Television - {!} By Brains, Wing Commander Last weekend, I had an interesting visit. NHK, Japanese public television sent a film crew to Georgia for two days to film this duck. NHK, by the way, is the equivalent to the BBC, rather then the U.S.'s PBS. It broadcasts on 2 channels throughout all of Japan. It seems that NHK was doing a documentary on CyberSpace that will air on November 9. The Director of the documentary was trying to understand virtual communities. NHK was especially interested in the cyberspace groups with defined roles and responsibilities. After spending time at FSC in California with the Oracles, and visiting the Duckolyte Web Site, it was determined that we should be included in the documentary. It all started with an e-mail from NHK. An e-mail led to more e-mails and phone calls. Brains met a representative of NHK in-world to show what a turf was, and for them to get a better idea of the Dreamscape. An interesting comment which led up to Brains showing a turf was, "How can I afford to buy a turf? I only have 50 Tokens." I guess we forget how certain things are well out of reach for the newbie to buy. Brains showed a number of turfs, heads, items, and explained how the economy works. We spent about an hour in-world touring the Dreamscape. Saturday arrives, and so does the film crew. Boy, was the film crew ever suprised when Brains greeted them at his door and didn't look like a duck at all. He was a normal person. Well, somewhat normal, anyways, except for his addiction to CyberSpace. After some casual conversation and a brief tour of the house, the filming began. The interesting trick, when being filmed is to look natural, even though five strangers are in your house with cameras and microphones trained on you at all times. The ratava of Brains was filmed from every possible angle at the computer. Brains was asked to go in-world and talk to others in Dreamscape while on camera. Many of the avatars were captured on film, and should be included in the film barring any serious editing. Little Princess made it to film as well as several Duckolytes including LumMoose and Dark Sun. Many others made it as well. The crew must have filmed boring old Brains for more than an hour sitting at a PC. The interviews started when they exhausted all camera angles, and finally realized they had no other possible shots left. A translator was present due to the fact that my Japanese is more than a little rough. It is very interesting to watch a director get excited asking questions, and you have to wait for the translator to ask you the question before you have a clue what was just said. Well, like many in here, Brains has lots of opinions. We will have to see which ones make it to the final film. We discussed virtual communities, groups, cyber relationships, mixing virtual worlds with the real world, and much, much, more. I guess I have forgotten how some find marriages in Cyberspace more than a little interesting. After all the Cyber conversations were done, we filmed Real World activities. They wanted to get me cutting my lawn. I had to put my foot down to that. Hey, I never cut the lawn more than I have to. The film crew settled for filming me watering the flowers and doing some other work around the yard. One of my neighbors came out and commented on how that was the first time he ever saw me water the flowers. He was filmed of course. Finally, with four hours of film, we said our goodbyes. We got all the interviewing and filming done in one day instead of two. Hurray, I would get Sunday off! It was a fun experience which I hope everybody gets a shot at some day. NHK was very gracious leaving unexpected unique Japanese gifts for the time and trouble including a nice silk brocade. I understand several other Dreamscapers had a visit as well including Passion and White Rose. We may have a few of us make the big time in Japan. Well, that's the short version of the adventure, and we will be sure to let you know how we did on the editing table when we receive a copy of the film. Something tells me I may have to branch out the Duckolytes to Habitat II for the Japanese now. They really like the duck heads. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Feature Stories ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - In Praise of King Midas - {!} By The White Angel With all the bad things that are happening in WA, avatars getting scammed, turfs being robbed, verbal abuse etc. etc. I would like everyone to know that there are some good, kind and selfless avatars around as well. For some reason, these rarely seem to get acknowledged in public, although there are plenty of postings warning everyone about the bad guys. This message is to tell you about King Midas, whom I observed at the weekend asking avatars if they would give him 1T. In return he would change it into 100T and give it back to them. Strangely, some folks were wary of handing over their 1T, although it seems odd that they couldn't risk losing that amount for the chance of getting 100T back. It seems that there is suspicion everywhere in WA, and I think it's a shame. The dishonest ones are spoiling it for everyone else. All the avatars who gave King Midas 1T, received 100T in exchange. He kept his promise and turned their tokens into gold! I think that he must be a wonderful person to do this kind of thing, it must have cost him a lot of his own tokens. It just goes to show that there are some kind and generous avatars in WA. Well done, King Midas. I wish there were more like you around. {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy Sex Magick ---------- This is one of the most potent forms of magick, for here we are dealing very much with the life forces. Dr. John Mumford, in Sexual Occultism, states that the most important psycho-physiological event, in the life of a human, is the orgasm. Sex Magick is the art of using the orgasm - indeed, the whole sexual experience - for magickal purposes. Successful sex magick involves an interplay of four factors: (1) all aspects of extrasensory perception are heightened during sexual excitation; (2) immediately before, during and after climax the mind is in a state of hypersensitivity; (3) consistency of peak sexual sensations facilitates access to the unconscious realms; (4) during orgasm many people have experienced timelessness and a total dissolution of the ego, accompanied by subjective sensations of being "absorbed by" their partner. The sex act is obviously the best possible, and most natural, way of generating the power we need for magick. The whole copulation process follows the pattern of starting slowly and gradually building up, getting faster and faster, until the final explosion of the climax. Within the Circle this can be done by a single couple, by a whole coven, or by a Solitary Witch, as you will see. Start out as usual with a short meditation on what you want to achieve. Then take up positions with males and females, in pairs, kneeling facing one another (I will deal with the Solitary in a moment). With eyes closed, allow your hands to pass slowly over your partner's body, stroking and caressing. This should not be hurried and the object, of course, is to bring about sexual arousal. When ready, the man should sit cross-legged with the woman sitting on top of him, facing him, and with his penis inside her. Now a gentle rocking backwards and forwards should take place. The man should try to keep his erection yet not climax. At this point the concentration should move to the object of the magick (which will also help in delaying orgasm); the "taking aim" part. Get the required picture in your mind and focus on it. Work on it, generating the power within you - you will certainly feel it building - and holding off the orgasm just as long as you possibly can. When the man feels he can hold off no longer, he should allow himself to fall backwards so that he is lying flat on the floor. As he climaxes he should release the power - actually see it, in your mind's eye, flashing away from you in a line of white light. The woman should strive for orgasm at the same time, if necessary stimulating herself with her fingers to achieve it. At completion she may fall (gently!) forwards to lie on her partner - still united - for several minutes. If the male has difficulty controlling ejaculation, it may be better for him to lay on his back at the outset (after the caressing stage) and for the woman to kneel astride him and move as he indicates. As Dr. John Mumford puts it: "If one considers the achievement of orgasm as analogous to launching a rocket to hit the Moon (i.e. the climax), then it is an unequivocal fact that so far as the neural pathways of the nervous system are concerned, the method by which the sexual skyrocket is launched is of absolutely no consequence. All the nervous system is concerned with is that contact explosion in inner space. The firing modality, be it masturbation, homosexuality or heterosexuality, is irrelevant. Only the end result (orgasm) is important and any form of sexual behavior is but a means to an end." So, for the Solitary Witch the answer is masturbation; remembering to hold off the orgasm just as long as possible. The longer it can be held off, the more power is generated. Of course there are alternatives for couples. It might be that the woman has her period; that the couple are of the same sex; that there is some other strong reason why actual intercourse cannot be indulged in (and let's try to lose the Victorian continence so many of us became imbued with from early Christian propaganda). One alternative is mutual masturbation. Another is oral sex. To once again quote Dr. Mumford: "Any repugnance to oral sex among Westerners is due to widespread confusion about the difference between bodily secretions (waste products no longer needed) and sexual secretions (fluids rich in nutrients) ... biochemistry has discovered that fresh semen contains liberal quantities of calcium, iron, phosphorous and Vitamin C*." Oral sex can be especially suitable, of course, when all chances of pregnancy must be eliminated. I have already emphasized the importance of bodily cleanliness for magick. Where sex magick is to be worked, it is especially important. Sex Magick can also be very useful as an adjunct to such things as divination and astral projection. If being used as a means of charging a cingulum, then the tying of knots should be done with the woman tying the first, the man the second, and so on. When the ninth knot has been tied, the cord should be wrapped around, tying the couple together as they approach orgasm. One final word on Sex Magick. It is only one of many ways to work magick. If you feel it is not for you, then don't use it. It's as simple as that. No one is saying you have to use Sex Magick if you are a Witch; you don't. Also, if you want to use it but feel you couldn't in a full coven situation, then do it only on an individual basis. The important thing - as in all of Witchcraft - is that you should feel comfortable with what you are doing. You should not be coerced into anything. Binding Spell ------------- This is used to prevent someone from giving away a secret. It is again a form of sympathetic magick. A clay or wax effigy may be used, or a cloth Poppet. In ritual it is named for the person it represents. Then, with appropriate words, the Witch takes a needle threaded with a twenty-one inch length of red silk, and sews up the mouth of the figure. She finishes off by winding the thread all around the body of the figure. The concentration is on the fact that the person is unable to speak on the forbidden subject - whatever the secret may be that is being safeguarded. At the end of the ritual the Poppet is stored away in a safe place, wrapped in a piece of white cloth. So long as the thread remains in place, the person represented is bound. Form of Ritual -------------- As you can see there are many, many ways of working magick, far more than I can contain in these issues of ESP! I have not discussed the magick of healing, but will look at that in the next issues to come. Don't be afraid to experiment, but do play it safe. None of the magick I have recommended is of the type that involves conjuring up some unknown and unpredictable entity. AVOID THAT TYPE OF MAGICK. That is where you can end up in deep trouble. Wiccan magick is just as powerful (perhaps more so) as any other type, when properly done. Let me recap the basic form of ritual for the working of magick: (1) Cast the Circle carefully. If it is a regular Esbat meeting, reinforce the Circle before starting the magick. (2) Never break the Circle whilst working magick. Your power will leak out and who knows what might be attracted in. (3) Discuss what is to be done and ensure that everyone is quite clear on how it is to be done. Decide on the exact wording of any chants and on the key word for releasing the power. (4) Start with a short meditation in which you see the whole story - the changing pattern from the present situation to the final (desired) situation. (5) Work up the power by any of the following, or a combination of them: dance, chant, cords, sex, candleburning, poppets. (6) Take aim - see the finished product. (7) Release the power. {!} - Host Spotlight - {!} By Sweet Suz This Week's Host Uses His IMAGINATION! As everyone knows we have some very young and intelligent people in WorldsAway. Many of us do not know much about them, so I decided to take this column to introduce a young man to you, who has been with the dream off and on from the beginning! Imagination was at our turf one evening after a game of Boxerama, and decided he would like to be one of the Host Spotlights! He told us about himself so we might be able to bring his ideas and his memories to you! Imagination prefers to remain ageless in the Dreamscape, as he found that this would put him on somewhat of an equal standing with older avatars! Imagination first found out about WorldsAway through Compuserve's "What's New"! This was even before the Beta Test. He told us that at the time, he could not apply for the Beta Test as his computer then was just to slow for his needs! Also at that time, his RW commitments could not allow him the time to be online often enough to constantly and consistently give info on bugs, etc. At that time he also had to be 18 to be on Beta. He first came online to the Dreamscape in August 1995, however his computer could still not take the speeds and he left until November 1995 when 1.0 came in! He has been on ever since! I asked Imagination what he liked so much about WorldsAway that kept him coming back! He told us that he likes the idea of the place itself. "It sure beats Chat Rooms!" was the one comment that stood out in our conversation! He continued on to explain the other things he likes about the Dreamscape! He likes the idea of having an economy online and the continuous rotation of games! (Which he likes to play! And Host!) Imagination has told us that he does not like the server. "No Server, No Peace!" was his quote on the subject. He hates the idea that he can not be online all the time, but then don't we all! Imagination is one of the hosts still holding the Kategories games! He has tried many ideas in which to improve the game, as well as to gain more avatar interest in weekly Kategories Games! He has held Kategories Marathons and Free Games! We asked what he liked about hosting that kept him coming back for more games! He explained to us that he just enjoys almost everything about being a host! With the exception of trying to find people to host with! He told us the Kategories isn't very popular right now, and that is why he is trying to set up the marathon Kategories games! He has also told us that he enjoys the funny and the stupid responses for the Kategories he gives out! The one other aspect that Imagination hates about hosting is setting up for the rounds and having to explain the rules over and over again! It gets boring was his answer! We asked Imagination to use his imagination and tell us what he would like to see in the future of WorldsAway! Imagination waited for a few minutes then came up with these ideas that would be great and useful to all of us! "I'd like to see teleporters near the turfs and in the V-Mart! We definitely need more teleporters! I'd also like inworld documents!" He continued on to tell us what he also sees for himself in the future in WorldsAway. These include the following answers! "Sometime in the future I would like to be able to pay off my huge debts, I amassed from the credit card company, I use to run! I might host Kategories more and maybe if I ever master VB, I'll come up with my own games! I will also have to cut my bill in the future!" (Oh-Oh!) Imagination really got down and told us all about his newbie experi- ences and what has happened to him inworld since he came on from the time 1.0 was activated. We feel that his own words explain this the best so read on to understand Imagination a little more! "I came inworld and was looking at the menu bar, to see what option there were in the WA program. (I do that with every program I get!) I saw the Page Acolyte feature, I wondered what that did, so I pushed it! (Do you think I actually read the help files? LOL) I was very surprised when someone answered my page! An acolyte (I forgot the name) was very friendly to me, I think I remember asking how to unghost! (Remember that was the first time I was ghosted!)" He continued: "I continued on my way after this encounter with the acolyte, chatting with other avatars and I remember asking people what there was to do in this Dreamscape! Back then we didn't have Bingo 24 hours a day! We only had Kymer and it wasn't very often you would find a host! So I just mainly walked around talking to people for the first few days!" "Later on I started playing Kymer! I didn't win a thing until a month or two after I first came inworld! Then in February, I started thinking about starting my own business inworld! Then it hit me! We don't have credit cards, so I decided to start PAC, Phantasus Credit!" Imagination has a great sense of humor and continued on with the following: "The A in PAC is there because I originally called the Credit card company WACC WorldsAway Credit Cards, and when I changed it to Phantasus Credit, I forgot to take out the A!" "Things were going okay at first, but I did not have many members. Then somebody who had a lot of businesses and games got a merchant account! Then people started joining and spending and spending! At the end of the month, most of the people didn't pay! (That explains my Debt!) That is why WA doesn't have credit cards!" "I bought so much trouble finding people who'd play! By the time I got the host, absolutely nobody was hosting Kategories anymore! So I have trouble getting people familiar with the game. Now I'm starting a free Kategories Marathon to get more people to try out the game. It's really fun to host it! Well I guess this takes me to the present time!" Imagination has had a lot of experiences Inworld and has kept a great sense of humor! Some of us could take an example of his stamina and use it to our own advantage! Imagination lives in the New York area. As we told you earlier, he wishes to remain ageless in the Dreamscape and we will not release his true age! He does still attend school and his Hobbies are Video Games, VB and TV! He also has a pet black Cocker Spaniel named Jackie! Good Luck, Imagination, in all your WorldsAway Endeavors! {!} - From an Acolyte's Notebook - {!} By Acolyte Brynne Date: Friday, 4/26/96 Time: 7-9pm but stayed with flag on til 10pm WAT Helped at least 40 avatars today; had to stop keeping count after a while; no time; pages were coming too fast and I didn't even get all those written down. I probably ticked off quite a few of 'em though, especially those who asked "Where is the furniture?" and "When will it be available?" and I couldn't answer the second question. Pages: 1: (1 minute before 9pm) "How long now?" (for opening of turfs) 2: "can't use one of my avatars" 3: "later" (from someone who realized I was swamped when he got a misdirected ESP from me) 4: "what are turf addresses?" 5: "how do I ride the elevator?" ... "but I don't have a turf" 6: "how do I get a job?" 7: "I can't unghost to rent a turf" (got *lots* of these) 8: "Does turfmate have to be inworld to add as co-owner?" 9: bunches and bunches of turf questions 10: "will you buy a rose head from me; I need tokens for a turf" 11: "can you give me a one-room turf? are there any left?" (this one thought the acolyte on duty was the apartment manager and gave out turfs; he ESP'd me consistently for quite a while til he finally got the message that he had to go to the building) 12: "I've been here 40 minutes trying to unghost to get a turf." 13: "Where are turf paints?" 14: "Why can't I allow guests?" (this one didn't realize he had to *give* the turf name to his friends before they could come up) 15: "If you're at the turf building, you need to tell these people to take their business deals elsewhere." (someone apparently was selling stuff in the manager's office; ESPd Lynx and he took care of it or something) 16: "How do I get a turf?" 17: "I rented my apartment ... I'm depressed" (asked why) "Where is the furniture?" (this one didn't like the 1 room she got; asked me if she could break lease on that one and get a 2 room; then asked me all sorts of questions about sharing turfs, etc.) 18: no reply 19: "How do visitors get to my turf?" (another one who didn't under- stand he had to give visitors the name of his turf) 20: "Can I share an apartment with someone?" 21: "Do we pay now or when the machine tells us?" (had to ask for clarification on this one; he was ghosted in the manager's office and wanted to know how payments would work) 22: "Where is my turf?" (turns out this one had rented a turf, then gone off to the VMart to buy paints; paged from the Bar-L Bar; he couldn't find the Apartment building again) 23: "Now that I got my turf, what now?" (I had to hold his hand from leaving the manager's office, telling him to go right to the elevators, etc. etc. etc.) Those were all I wrote down. I know there were more and there were quite a few ESPs and questions at the Help Desk. I was actually quite stoned at the desk and fortunately, there were a few avatars there who were there answering questions. And even though one of our more notorious thieves can be a problem, he did a good deed while at the desk for a little while. Someone said she didn't have enough tokens for even a one-room turf. He gave her enough for her first month's rent. Course his parting shot as he left the VCC was "Those tokens are from all the people I stole them from." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Kymer-conomics ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Kymer-conomics! - {!} By Mufasa, Financial Editor WOW! After several months of deflation in some areas of the economy and back-and-forth price drift in others, inflation began another rampant gallop last Monday night and continued throughout the week. A few of this week's prices: Christmas Elf, 26500; rocking horse, 7750; Skull Head, 41000; Bag O Chips Head, 5300; Torgerson Teddy, 8000. Look for charts updating this month's auction prices next week, before the Econo-Lion commences her Northerly trek toward Tuktoyaktuk and Banks Island. Those who heeded our cautionary words about gold spitoons have reason to be pleased. The first spittoon auctioned after Fern Day brought a price of 9999; the most recent sale was at 6000. Many more spitoons are held by acolytes to give as game and event prizes. Only wealthy avatars should assume the risks incident to buying these spitoons now, advises one who vividly recalls heart chests and snowballs selling for more than 5000 tokens. Another Way to Whip Inflation ------------------------------ Several weeks ago, we discussed some suggestions that had been made to Laurie Hoye, Forum SysOp, in connection with controlling the inflation that has stalked and savaged the Kymer economy. The Kymer-conomics! mailbox contained an excellent suggestion from Brains, Wing Commander. He asked, "Why not use disposable, exhaustible, or self- destructing items to extract tokens from the economy?" Some possibilities are holiday firecrackers that shoot only once, food items that "perish" in a day or a week, special heads that can be used for 30 or 60 days, then automatically self-destruct, one-shot cans of expensive, limited edition "designer" paints. Thanks for sending in this idea, Brains! Kymerian Kudos -------------- Congratulations to Necrolyte Sky Tower and Mrs. Sky Tower for a superb first auction on Saturday, September 13. Sky went to a great deal of effort to get consignments of various types of goods, so almost any ghost in the audience could find several interesting things on offer. Sky and Mrs. Sanized, friendly, handled the predictable minor disruptions with aplomb, and provided three hours of non-stop fun for the attendees. Thanks, Necrolyte Sky Tower and Mrs. Sky Tower! Congratulations are also due Clover and the superb staff of Clover's Collectibles. For several months, the Econo-Lion has been quietly urging Clover to take that plunge into the high end of the auction market. Last Monday, Clover and her staff conducted a special holiday auction, and, oh!-- what a great auction it was! Some of the items that were on offer: Pumpkin head (tall), Skull head, She's Dead head, Bride head, Friar head, Jack O Lantern ornament, Voodoo Dolls in beta green and prize purple, Pumpkin head (short), and Xmas Elf head. Everyone was excited and everyone had fun. We hope that Clover, who has the expertise and connections with potential con- signors of high-end items, will have more specialty auctions like this in the future. Everyone benefits, including aveys who are a long way away from being able to buy such items, but who attend for the enter- tainment and the opportunity to ESP-socialize as lot after lot of special rarities are put on the block. Kudos, Clover, and thanks for a great evening! Advice for Auction Houses -------------------------- In past columns, we've offered Savvy for Consignors and Buy-Words for bidders. This is being offered to provide some help for new auction houses and to pass along some of the things we have learned from watching Kymer's long-standing auctioneers in action. 1) Give timely notice of cancellations. Many Kymerians plan their time inworld around the events in which they are most interested. Be considerate of your staff, friends, con- signors, and customers. When an auction must be cancelled, post a notice in both the Inworld Events and the Discussion and Issues sections of the Forum. If a sudden emergency leaves no time to post notices, Email a reliable staff member and ask him or her to walk through the Apartment Building Lobby and also through the Lift locales, playing an explanaterian. Businesses with the best reputa- tions are those run by avatars who act as if they were in a real-world business. As less punctilious competitors wither on the vine, these businesses grow stronger, and their proprietors and staff prosper. 2) Start on time, end on time. We realize that this can be difficult. Many auctions cut across the dinner hour in several U.S. time zones, and almost all straddle late night/early morning hours in Europe, making it a bit of a challenge to get all the staff assembled in advance. Remember, that every minute counts to Kymerians who do not have sponsored accounts, and ghosts grow impatient if too many minutes tick by between the scheduled start and the introduction of the first lot. 2) Do not allow staff to bid at any time, for any reason. It is a conflict of interest between the auction house and the con- signor when staff is permitted to bid. The auction house works for the consignor, the staff members work for the house which works for the consignor. Staff members cannot simultaneously serve the consignor's interests and their own. It is a conflict of interest between the auction house and the cus- tomers when staff is permitted to bid. When staff members bid up the price of an item but do not buy, they are adding to the acquisition costs of the buyers. Without buyers, the auction house realizes no profit. The Econo-Lion has heard, "So-and-so allows staff to bid, so it must be all right". Read the two paragraphs above and think the matter through. Staff members who bid, whether or not they buy, are directly in conflict with the interests of both consignors and customers. It may be well-meant, but it is unethical. Period. Full stop. 3) Schedule auction lots along a bell curve. It's tempting to sell special items last, but it isn't always wise. At 6 p.m. in Hawaii and 8 p.m. in California, it's 11 p.m. on the East Coast and 5 a.m. in Germany. Early risers in Central and Eastern have logged off for the night, some German avatars who work iironments are logging off to get ready for work. The net effect may be the loss of a significant portion of your audience. It's a good idea to schedule the lots: low-end, mid-range, high-end, mid-range, low-end to maximize the interest, audience, and the bids. 4) Increase the incremental amount of bids. When items seldom auctioned for more than 5000 tokens and rarely auctioned for more than 15000 tokens, 50 token increments sufficed. Now that items frequently auction in the 5000 token range, and not infrequently reach the 15000 token level and beyond, it is a colossal bore, not to mention a waste of connect time and money, when several ghosts duke it out for an expensive item -- 50 tokens at a time. Given current price levels, increments of 100 tokens seem very reasonable, even on very low-end items. We would also suggest that auctioneers request 500 token increments when bids on a head or item exceed 10000 token and 1000 token increments when bids exceed 50000 tokens. Cut to the chase, save time, save your audience! 5) Be low-key in dealing with disrupters and thieves. It's tempting to announce that you are ejecting Rude Girl, that Nasty Boy is ESP-bombing you, or that Slimeball's bids are being refused, but your distress is a disruptor's payoff. If you're ejecting someone, just do it. If you must ask security to eject someone, use ESP. If you are ESP-bombed, the simple statement, "For the next few minutes, please send bids to X" will do. 6) Adopt a deposit or bid ticket system for very high-end items. Most us us have seen two avatars bid an item to substantially more than its value, then repudiate their bids. A deposit or bid ticket system can reduce the likelihood that repudiating bidders will waste time and cause withdrawal of one or more lots. If you use a ticket system, include in the Forum announcement of the auction "Bids on items X, Y, and Z will be limited to advance purchasers of bid tickets. E-mail the auctioneer at UID XXXX,XXX to make arrangements to purchase a bid tise a deposit system, when the bids reach a pre-announced amount, call re the bids and to ensure the bona fides of all bidders. 7) Schedule a definite payout day and time and meet that commitment. Clover handles this exceptionally well. Every Tuesday, she is in the lobby promptly at 7:00 p.m. WAT to pay consignors. Her consignors never have to chase her around Kymer or send numerous E-mails asking to be paid. Other auction houses would benefit themselves by following her example. Tantalizing Tidbit ------------------ If you have followed the forum thread "CyberCity96", you have seen the assertions that WorldsAway is the Western version of Habitat II, which operates in Japan. Maybe, could be, but those who have visited Web Site http://gmsnet.or.jp/habitat_page/download.htm have a few questions. The questions are: 1) If Habitat II is not to be introduced in the West, why are the logos in both Japanese and English, or, in the alternative, why is English used in any case? 2) If Habitat II is not to be introduced in the West, why is there a download area, still under development, but clearly marked "Download Habitat II for Windows" as well as the download area, fully developed, and download instructions written in Japanese? The Econo-Lion thinks that more people in Japan read Japanese than read English, so, if Habitat II is truly intended only for the Japanese market, the English-language logo and download area are superfluous. Well, I was planning on putting some news here, but nothing came up, so I guess we'll have to just move on . But first, I just want to tell you (or remind you) what this is. I will be reviewing a couple (or more) web pages here every other week. These reviews will soon be available on the Links section of the Kymer Web site, at http://webcontact.com/wa/links/. This week, I have decided to review some groups' homepages. Why? Well, they tend to be larger than regular pages, and have a lot of work put into them. Because of that, I want to congratulate those who have done one and put that much effort into it. Or something like that, anyway . Last time, I reviewed the Magnolytes' homepage, so you might want to check out issue number 28 of ESP! for that. -First up is the SunRay Knights page. This was put together by Render, and has some pretty nice artwork and content. It is simple enough that it won't make your browser start doing goofy things, but overall the layout is very balanced (It's good!). [***] SunRay Knights of Kymer group page: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Render/ -The Hispaniclyte Homepage is an up-to-date and informational site about their group, and has pictures of their members, a photo gallery, and other goodies. [***1/2] Hispaniclyte's Homepage: http://home.coqui.net/iboricua/ -The last one up for review this week is the Empire's Homepage. Okay, I admit, I forgot it in the links section of my site, but that will be fixed soon! The Empire's site is a pretty darn big collection of hints and tips about WorldsAway, the Empire Group, its members and rules, the Empire's own on-line newsletter, and lots more. Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
