Today I received a letter that informed me that Miranda (Malene to me) has left us forever. Her heart was beating for Worlds Away since the very first days of the Dreamscape. Her green masque was unique and unique was her personality. Her dream has ended after just 20 years caused by a rare disease that she never spoke about. Whereever your spirit may be floating now, be sure your friends will never forget you. Unable to express my sorrow. In the name of many... Throbbing Gristle {!} - From the Editor's Desk - {!} By Acolyte Brynne I am deeply saddened by Throbbing Gristle's report about Miranda Mirage. Miranda will be sorely missed in the Dreamscape. Not really much else for me to say this week ... I am coming up on my personal deadline for uploading and still have the schedules to format. So I must get to them. Enjoy this week's issue and have a great week in Phantasus! {!} - From the Event Editors' Desk - {!} By Jal and Sweet Suz Well, the end of this week has been extremely busy and difficult for us. For starters, we are taking a trip to Montreal to visit relatives this week. We leave Sunday, return Friday. So we have been busy getting the articles put together for ESP! while packing at the same time. Then the worst happens: our PC drive crashed and we lost EVERYTHING. I had some things backed up, but not everything. So we have been busy rebuilding the PC and downloading software like crazy. Due to all the crazyness in our RW lives, we do not have a *Host Spotlight* publication for this week. Boxerama will also be closed on Tuesday. So we wish everyone well for the coming week in Kymer. Look for *Host Spotlight* in the next issue of ESP!, and hope to see everyone at Boxerama on Tuesday September 24. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Feature Stories ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Role-playing in WorldsAway - {!} by Lady Midnight I was very interested to read Cosmocat's and Brynne's thoughts on role-playing in general and WA in particular. Here are some of my views and experiences on this subject. When I first read about WorldsAway, I thought to myself, "This sounds like fun!" I would have the chance to do a bit of role-playing and really "get away from it all" at the weekends. I think that one of the attractions was the anonymity of the whole thing. I could be anyone I wanted to be, and no one would know who I really am. I've always been interested in acting, and at one time I was in the local village pantomime for several years running. I've had to give it up now; it was starting to take up too much of my time. That's another good thing about WorldsAway, you can come and go as you please, and you don't have to be committed to being in a certain place at a certain time. My main avatar's personality was created as a younger version of myself. I have always felt, looked and acted younger than my years, anyway. On my second day inworld, I met someone who became first of all a very good friend, and later on, a lover. I soon found that it was hard to keep up a pretence of being someone you're not, and as we came to know each other better, we ended up telling each other all about our real-world lives. There are a lot of similarities between us: we are both married, we are of a similar age, we both have 2 daughters, we even live in the same country and geographical area as each other. However, we both want to keep the role-playing aspect alive, so over the next few weeks, we invented our characters' past lives and together we wrote a story about how we both came to live in Kymer. When we are inworld together, we are these two characters. However, we have no intention of making this into a real-world affair, although we love each other very much. My second avatar is rather a mysterious person. She claims to come from the Underworld, where she was the Chief Receiver of newly-dead souls, working for Hades, Lord of the Underworld. Her full story has been published in ESP! and won third prize in the story-writing competition. This avatar is the one I can really have fun with, as I find I can easily slip into the role and usually find myself telling the story inworld to anyone who will listen. Usually they will play along, and ask me questions about the Underworld, and how they can get there themselves! It is truly amazing how many people want to go there. They will beg and plead with me to tell them how. I even had one guy trying desperately to sell his head to someone to get some money, because I told him that when you go to the Underworld, you have to pay the ferryman to take you across the river Styx! The story goes that Hades' Helmet of Invisibility was stolen by some- one who infiltrated his way into the Underworld, and that person ended up in Kymer. I was sent by Hades to recover the Helmet and take it back to him. So I always ask people if they have seen anyone with the Helmet who could be the thief. Last weekend, I staged a scene, with a couple of friends, in which Hades came looking for me, demanding that I tell him who the thief was. The thief appeared on the scene and was eventually persuaded to give me the helmet which I returned to Hades. I have only given a very brief account of what occurred, as I intend to write this down as a sequel to my original story, hopefully to be published in ESP! While I am happy to be role-playing in this fantasy world, I do realize that everyone isn't into this particular kind of thing, so sometimes I like to just wander around and chat with the various citizens, about any subject that happens to be the topic of the moment. For this, I use my primary avatar, the one I consider to be my main character, and the one that is the most like me. If someone asks me "Where are you from?" I don't mind telling them which country I live in, in RW, nor do I mind telling them what I do for a living, or what books, films, etc. I am interested in. I do not, however answer personal questions about my age! No-one in WA knows that, not even my lover. I do, however, often start by telling them where I am from as if I was the character I'm role-playing. Sometimes they will play along, too, and that is marvelous, but if they just want to be themselves and chat, then I will usually drop the character, and chat along with them. I have also experimented with one or two other characters as well, but these two are the ones I like best. I like to keep them completely separate from each other, they each have their own set of friends, and nobody, except my lover, knows who they both are. I want to keep things this way, and that is why I am writing this article under my secondary avatar's name. I agree with what Cosmocat said in his article about the importance of being able to separate Dreamscape and Real World experiences. At no time do I ever start believing that my adventures in Kymer are real. True, they seem real while I am there, and I do throw myself into the whole Dreamscape experience. However, there is rather a fuzzy line between the two worlds, especially when you know that the people you are interacting with are real people, not just people-shaped graphics in a computer game. This is where things start to get complicated. How I have come to terms with it is to acknowledge that whoever I'm speaking to is a real person, but that, just like me, they have come to play in a virtual world, and their avatar is not the actual person, merely a representation of what the person is or would like to be. I care very much about the friends I have made, and I would want to know that they are safe and happy in the Real World. This whole situation is very strange, and the more you start to analyze it, the more difficult it becomes to explain it all. I have done my best to put my point of view forward, and I hope others will do the same and write to ESP! with their own views. See you Inworld! {!} - Decorating your Dream - {!} Turf Decorating Tips by Princess Di Our Friend, the Hippi Head and Its Many Uses! --------------------------------------------- With the cooler days ahead, we look to our turfs for comfort and warmth. What better way to be cozy than to snuggle up in a nice comfy bed or a relaxing sofa or chair. Even without any official furniture available in Phantasus, you can still have a nicely furnished turf with a touch of ingenuity and those very versatile Hippi Heads -- yes, you heard me! Hippi Heads! Let me show you how, with a few hundred tokens, you can have that bed or sofa you have always dreamed of owning! Keep in mind, too, that Hippi Heads do have their other uses, as you will see in the attached GIF. I have one in my recreation room, which I use as a Hippi Head bowling ball! Even though it is not as round as I would like, it still works quite well in knocking over those pins! However, be forewarned! Hippis used as bowling balls tend to get rather loud! They don't really like to be thrown around too much. So, a piece of sturdy tape may be necessary over the mouth! LOL.....Gee, no mail please, I'm only joking! Those of you who know me know I'm a big kidder. Hippi Heads also make great stools or hassocks. Ah! The thought of relaxing and putting my feet up on a Hippi Head hassock brings warm, fuzzy feelings to mind! With the advent of those patches which have enabled most of us to "put" and "get" so easily, making Hippi Head furniture is much easier than it was before! To assemble a king-size Hippi Head bed, you will need approximately 12 Hippi Heads. I can remember the time a few months ago when I was putting together my Hippi Head bed. I was quite startled to find after placing the Hippi Heads down and leaving the locale, that when I came back, some of them were turned around and facing forward! The sight of those beady little eyes was not something I was prepared to see! THAT happened before the put/get patch --- now, that does not happen! However, if you do not have the patch, please be aware that you might see some rebellious heads turned around staring at you after you have placed them down and left the locale! However, with just a tiny bit of patience and effort, they can be properly trained to stay put! You can see from my GIF that placing the heads is an easy procedure once you plan on where you want to have your bed or other furniture. As a finishing touch for my Hippi Head Bed, I use chests for the headboard. However, any suitable object can be used to head up your bed --- I've also used paint cans lined up as a headboard! If you can dream it, you can do it! The ole trial-and-error process will help you to perfect the look you want. I especially prefer the Hippi Heads because of their soft, yet springy, wiry feel. They give just the perfect support while affording you the finest comfort! Of course, their reasonable price of 50T each plays a big factor, too. In addition, you will find that maintaining your Hippi furniture is an easy process! A simple dunk and swish in soapy water once every few months will keep the hair nice and springy! Again, be sure to keep that tape handy for any excess noise! Some Hippis have been known to be very fussy about getting dunked in water. My attached GIF of various types of Hippi Head furniture should be quite helpful in showing you ideas on how to get started! Hopefully, these ideas will be of use as you try to solve those turf-decorating woes many of you experience due to the lack of furniture! Remember, be kind to your Hippis, (don't forget the tape!), treat them well, and they will serve you a long time! Until next time, have fun decorating YOUR dream!!! HUGS to all, Princess Di {!} - Tarot Majik: Unraveling the Knots - {!} By Hierophant SRK, Facilitator of the Sunray Majik Guild Why so many burdens? --------------------- Phred stood in Meditation Park with his head down and his hands in his pockets. He put on a brave smile, when he saw Hannah. "Hi Hannah. Nice to see you." "Phred. It's nice to see you. But why do you look so sad?" "I'm so discouraged. Too many people in Dreamscape are being dragged down by their Waking World lives. The dreams of Dreamscape haven't been enough to keep them flying above the tides." "That is a bummer Phred. But c'mon. Get a grip. You've always given me such great advice. Can't you give some to yourself." "A dose of my own medicine!" Phred laughed. "Yes I could use some of that. Now what would I say to me in a situation like this?" "For starters I'm sure you'd say that getting depressed isn't going to help. Even I can see that." "I'm not actually depressed. I'm in despair, which is much more important," Phred laughed. "But seriously, sometimes, it's so discouraging to see how hard people have to struggle to hang on to their dreams." "Well, at least people are trying, Phred! Wouldn't it be even more pathetic if we were all sitting around and didn't even know about dreams?" "That's true, Hannah. But I have a friend, who was getting so good at flying with her dreams. She was in a beautiful flow in Dreamscape, and then, boom, she was forced off-line by Waking World problems. It makes me sad." "Now let me think what you would say, Phred," Hannah said thought- fully. "You'd say, 'Well, your friend won't forget. Despite the obstacles, her longing will gradually pull her closer to her dreams.'" "You're right Hannah. And then I'd say, 'Let's do a Tarot reading.'" They both laughed. As Phred pulled the Tarot deck from the forest green paisley pouch on his belt, he said "I'm glad you're here, Hannah. Your presence is helping me get out of my dark mood." "I'm glad to be here too, Phred. That's what friends are for. What question are you going to ask the Tarot?" "I'll ask, 'As I try so hard to help people find their dreams, how can I be more patient about their rate of progress and the obstacles in their path?'" He shuffled the cards and then spread them face down on his special forest green paisley cloth. Without speaking, he selected each card. Sometimes he paused to stir through the pile. After he had picked all eleven cards, he placed them face up for the reading. Hannah broke the silence. "There are a lot of Wands in this reading." "Yes. That makes sense. This reading focuses on pushing through life's obstacles, and that's what the Wands represent. Let's see what speci- fic insights I can get to help me out of this discouraged state of mind." "The card in the 'question' position is the nine of Wands," he con- tinued. "The man in the card has been through a long, hard battle. He's so tired he needs to hang on to a wand to support himself. The card means that we in Dreamscape have come through a tough first year, but we've kept up a good effort, and we're hanging in there." "But, Phred. Some of my Dreamscape friends aren't even here anymore. Why does the Tarot say we're hanging in there?" "Dreamscape is a Majikal dimension of reality, so you can be in Dreamscape in your heart. Even though you don't see your friends on the streets of Kymer, they are still fighting to resist the pull of gravity, and learning to fly to their dreams." "The next card, in the position that opposes or supports the question, is the Ace of Swords, which indicates a new cycle. The energy of the Sword cuts the knots that keep people stagnating and stifled. Some- times these knots that keep us stuck seem like they are going to last forever. The Swords are the things that sweep into our lives and cut through the knots. It's often painful, but it's the fastest way to push you forward." "What do you think the Sword is in this case, Phred?" "There are many difficult life circumstances that interfere with people coming to Dreamscape. The Ace of Swords is the energy that cuts through obstacles so people can get InWorld and get closer to their dreams." "I don't get it yet, Phred. The 'question' card is the exhausted guy in the nine of Wands. How does the Ace of Swords oppose or support the question?" "Just look at the cards, Hannah. The man in the nine of Wands has been fighting a noble battle. He has survived, but he looks worn out. He has been using the wands as his weapons to get through life. But the wands haven't given him the forward progress he wants. The Ace of Swords represents the cutting through of the obstacles so he can push forward to a new level." "Okay. Suppose I'm stuck and I want to move forward. How do I use the Ace of Swords to get out of my tangle?" "Swords jolt you out of your comfort zone, so it takes insight and determination to choose them. You arrive at most situations in life because you want them. In some situations you gradually realize you're stuck. Even when you realize it, you'd be surprised how easy it is to just want to stay where you are. You might think, 'Okay. It's hard. But I'll just work a little harder and it will work out.' That's the Wands suit, which works hard within the situation. The Swords cut it, which often hurts." "All this talk about cutting sounds scary." "It can hurt. But being stuck is scary, too. The next card is the four of Ankhs. It's in the environment position. The four of Ankhs repre- sents making the effort to find your dream." His face lit up, and he said, "Oh, this helps answer your question about how to choose Swords. You'll only choose to cut through a knot after you've achieved the wisdom to accept the discomfort. The four of Ankhs is the effort and hard work of seeking that wisdom. By making the effort, you open yourself to wisdom. And the wisdom lets you see that the pain is worthwhile, because it's cutting through the knots." "Could you give me an example in which I would welcome pain?" "Let me think of an example. How about this. I met a woman who got lost on her way to a job interview, and missed her appointment. She really needed that job and was devastated. She sat and cried for an hour. She thought, 'the universe hates me. This opportunity was taken away from me.' But opening up to that hour of grief and loss was extremely important for her -- much more important than the job interview. In order to stay in harmony with her dreams she desperately needed to get in touch with her own grief. Anyway, it wasn't a real loss, because you can't turn the clock backwards and wish for what didn't happen. That job was someone else's, or at least that interview couldn't happen at that time. So nothing was lost, really, and much was gained in her journey towards her dream." "I can see your point. But that person must have been in a lot of pain. I wouldn't like that," Hannah grimaced. "Of course not," Phred said. "Nobody likes pain. But it helps if you can see that the pain is part of the journey. The next card, in the 'hopes or fears' position is the Knight of Wands. That means energy and effort, coming in swiftly, like a knight on horseback. Because the Knight is an energetic card and the Wands are an energetic suit, the Knight of Wands can indicate too much energy, which can feel like a roller coaster. Ups and downs come fast and furious, so sometimes you feel wildly successful and sometimes dejected and discouraged." "That's an interesting card. I know that feeling. Why do you suppose it's in the 'hopes and fears' position?" "When I see people hurting in Dreamscape, I often hope for more and more energy. But too much energy can lead to frantic, poorly directed action. This card tells me I've been too concerned about increasing the energy level. Instead, I should seek more wisdom, more under- standing and compassion and patience." "The Tarot is pointing out that more and more energy is a false hope. What you are hoping for is not going to give you what you want. That's interesting," Hannah observed. "Yes. That's the Majik of the Tarot. It helps me step back and see a situation from a different angle of vision. Now let's look at the next card, the six of Wands, in the 'significator or subject' position." "What a fun card," Hannah said. "The man on the horse looks so happy, with the crowds around him cheering." "They are celebrating victory. It looks like the Tarot is showing me the victory in our situation in Dreamscape." "What do you mean 'victory', Phred? A few minutes ago you were com- plaining about all the obstacles." "Exactly, Hannah. But there have been so many accomplishments. Two years ago I couldn't even imagine a world like Dreamscape. Now it exists, and it has helped many people connect with their dreams. I should be celebrating those victories, instead of moaning about disappointment." "Beautiful, Phred. This ought to help you get out of your funk. The next card looks discouraging, though. A man is carrying all ten wands. They look heavy!" "It does look heavy, Hannah. The ten Wands represent the heavy burdens of life. But notice that there is a bright celestial city in the background. The man is approaching the city, where he will be able to put down his heavy burden." "When I look at that picture, I can feel how badly he needs that relief. I'm glad he's going to be able to put down his burden. But I thought that the Wands represent energy. Why is he burdened down by them?" "In the Tarot's numerology, nine is the end of a cycle. The tenth is 'one too many', like the proverbial 'last straw'. The Wands represent the energy in life. That energy is fresh and vigorous at the beginning of the suit. As you move to the end of the cycle, to the nine of Wands, the energy has become fulfilled. You've been through it all, you've survived, but you're getting pretty tired. The tenth Wand is yet again another load of life's work. Instead of being a challenge, it feels like a burden." "All those burdens look just plain depressing." "Exactly, Hannah. That's what I was feeling. But the card also repre- sents putting down the burdens. This is another way to get through a knot. Sometimes you've been through a situation for so long you can't take it any more. Then you find a shift of perspective that lets you become aligned with your dreams, and your problems no longer weigh you down." "I know so many people who wish they could get away from their Waking World burdens," Hannah observed. "But Waking World problems are so intense. Do you think that Dreamscape can help people put down their burdens?" "If you treat your dreams with the serious focus they deserve, you'll find that they are powerful enough to lighten any load. Suppose you come InWorld and start writing a poem, or reaching out to a friend in need. As you imagine the words and images of the poem, or as you reach out to your friend, there is a freedom from thinking about yourself. Gradually you can learn how to reach upwards towards your dreams. Don't you agree that flying is a lot lighter than feeling trapped?" "Whew, Phred. Dreams are so powerful. What about the card at the top of the reading. More wands!" "That's the three of Wands. The man standing by the three upright wands looks successful. He's learned that the key to success is to merge his will with the will of a higher consciousness. He's looking out over the ocean, which represents the waters of his unconscious mind, from which bubble forth his dreams and longings." "So the three of Wands shows a man accepting the unconscious in order to move through life. Is that the same as getting in touch with your dreams?" "Well, this card isn't exactly about getting in touch with your dreams. It's in the Wand suit, which is about the energy of life. The man in the card has been propelled forward in life by accepting the unconscious. But notice how he is standing there by the side of the ocean, waiting, rather than jumping in. His acceptance is neat. But in the Tarot the ultimate challenge is to jump into the ocean and experi- ence your dreams firsthand. When you're in the ocean of the uncon- scious, you can fly up into the sky, and then you become conscious." "Wow. That's cool. I like that guy in the three of Wands, but I can see what you mean about how he's waiting. It looks kind of dull in comparison to flying up into my dreams." "There's nothing wrong with the three of Wands. It is a really valu- able energy in life; respecting the energy of the unconscious, in yourself and in others, and appreciating the generosity in the uni- verse. It's so unproductive to slip into the bad habit of expecting bad things from the universe. This card shows the benefits of working with the generosity of the unconscious." "So, let's see. The three of Wands is the 'significator'. How does that help answer your question?" Hannah asked. "As I move my energy through Dreamscape, trying to make Dreamscape work, and hoping for others to find their dreams, I need to accept that many things come through the flow of a higher will. It's telling me to appreciate and work with whatever progress we make. The long road is traveled one step at a time. I need to be excited and involved in the steps, no matter how tiny. By accepting the forward progress of Dreamscape and working with it, I'll continue to do my best." "Wow, Phred. That ought to help you with your impatience. The next card is a little strange looking though. That dog howling at the moon makes me nervous." "That's the Moon card, which represents the power of the unconscious. The unconscious can be a generous ally, when you work with it. But it can be a cruel master if you let it rule you. That's why so many cards in the Tarot encourage you to pierce into the unconscious. By becoming more aware of your inner dreams you become more and more conscious. Awakening to consciousness is a powerful goal." "Why is the Moon here? Is it telling you that there's some uncon- sciousness going on?" "There's always unconsciousness Hannah. No one is completely aware of all the forces working within their own minds. The Moon is here in the 'immediate future' position as a reminder that many of the people who need to find their dreams must wrestle with the forces of old uncon- scious patterns. As we grow towards our dreams, we'll naturally learn how to get these unconscious patterns under control." "Unconscious patterns ... that's an interesting image, Phred. While I'm InWorld, I'm conscious of my dreams, and they help me fly. When I go back to Waking World it does seem like I'm slipping into old grooves of unconscious patterns. Interesting." "Yes, but you don't need to focus on unconsciousness. Awaken to your dreams gently, and unconsciousness will melt away in its own time. The key to this gentle awakening is the queen of Cups in the 'final outcome' position. The suit of Cups represents love, and the feminine energy of the queen is loving and protective. So this card is very strong in these gentle nurturing qualities." "That's a sweet feeling. With all the Wands in this reading, it's been all action, action, action. It's nice to see this gentle strength in the final outcome." "That's true Hannah. This reading has been about wanting to help people get through their obstacles. The Wands represent the effort of action. Moving through life is hard work. But behind all the actions there has to be a core of loving kindness." "So when you feel overwhelmed like the guy in the nine of Wands, you ought to remember the loving kindness and strength of the Queen of Cups. Right?" Hannah observed. "That's a comforting image, Hannah. Patience flows naturally whenever I remember that love is the foundation of all awakening. Now let's look at the two insight cards. One of them is uplifting, but the other is a bit upsetting. The five of Ankhs represents righteous anger. That's the most dangerous kind of anger, because when you think you're right you can put the full force of your will into being as hurtful as possible." "Ughh. The guy in the picture looks like one of those old preachers who is going to curse anyone to hell if they don't believe exactly what he believes." "Yes, that's the image on the card, but I'm afraid anyone can slip into this attitude. You know how you feel when your boss or friend says the wrong thing, and suddenly you become angry? As you get angry, you have a choice. Either you can try to understand the other person's point of view, or else you can just completely give in to your own point of view and think you are 'right' and therefore your anger is completely justified." "That's a good point, Phred. When I wrestle with anger I feel so helpless, like I'm being swept up in my own emotions. The whole point to anger is feeling that someone did something wrong. So it's hard to work out in my mind that they might have their own point of view." "People are so willing to blame each other," Phred replied. "When things go wrong in your life, you often look at it as some injustice that is being directed towards you. You blame anyone you can think of; your coworkers, family, neighbors, even God. The daily Waking World news is a loud, angry chorus of people thinking they're right and everyone else is wrong. Did you know there are billions of people on earth? And every single one thinks that he or she is right and everyone else has to pay attention to our rightness or suffer our wrath. When you blame, you stop paying attention to the other person's feelings, and that cuts people off from each other. It seems like we're all getting more and more right, and more and more lonely." "So how is this card an insight into the final outcome?" "Instead of finding fault with the process of growing, I should remember that blaming anyone or anything is just a waste of time and moves me further from my goal." "Have you been blaming someone for all these problems, Phred?" "In a way. By being upset about the problems, and getting depressed, I'm really working against the way things are, as if the world is supposed to follow my plan, instead of me following what the world is doing. Anger and frustration go together hand in hand to prevent you from seeing a solution or a perspective that will help you move through a problem." "That angry guy is a good reminder, Phred. I don't want to look like that every time I feel like something goes wrong. What's the other insight card?" "It's the three of Ankhs, which shows two hands reaching up for strength. The third hand, reaching down, lifts and heals. The three of Ankhs is a card of healing." "That's a beautiful image, Phred. But could you explain what you mean by healing in this case?" "Usually the word healing is about the ability of your body to repair itself from illness or injury. But you soul can be injured too, by feelings of being alone, or unappreciated. Those hurts need to be healed. That healing takes place when the soul reaches up towards a higher awareness. You are never alone in the Universe, and when you reach upwards, you feel a universal warmth which heals you. The third hand in the card represents that universal healing that pulls you up as you reach to it." Hannah replied, "I guess a lot of people who are feeling bashed by life could use some of that healing. The next time I feel crunched by problems I'm going to think of this beautiful image of the two hands reaching up and the third hand reaching down. The image gives me a sense of peace." "Me too, Hannah. It's an image that gives me the gentle strength to carry on." "So, Phred, has this reading helped you feel better?" "Oh yes! Working through the Tarot images has really helped, Hannah. It's amazing how many different ways there are to look at any situation. Sometimes when I feel bad, it's because I'm stuck in a certain rut, and I need to get a friendly push into a better angle of vision. Thanks for you support." "Happy to be there for you Phred. You've helped me so many times." {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy Love Magick ------------ There is probably more interest in so-called "love philtres" and "potions" than in any other form of magick. The vast majority of these, however, belong in the realm of fiction. But there are rituals that do work. One of the best known and most effective is the one involving the use of "Poppets". These Poppets represent the lovers. As with any sympathetic magick, what is done to the poppets is done to the lovers. A Poppet is a specially prepared, cloth doll. It is a simple rough figure cut from two pieces of cloth. Whilst cutting the cloth, you should be concentrating on the person it represents. It may then be worked on further by embroidering it with the facial features; special characteristics (e.g. beard and moustache; long flowing hair). Even astrological signs of the person may be put on, along with the Sun, Moon and Rising Sign symbols. If you are not too good at embroidery, then put these on with a magic-marker or pen. Now sew around the figure leaving just the top open. The figure should then be stuffed with appropriate herbs, again while the actual person is being concentrated upon. Such herbs as verbena, vervain, feverfew, artemesia, yarrow, valerian, motherwort, rosebuds, elder or damiana can be used. These are the herbs governed by Venus. The top of the Poppet may then be sewn up. Two poppet figures are prepared in this way; one representing the male and the other the female. All of this preparation, of course, should take place in the Circle, and can be done by the individual or by the whole coven. Since you are seeking your "ideal mate" then, as with candleburning (below), make the second figure with all the qualities that you seek. It is nameless but again can display physical desires (e.g. long blonde hair) and be made with all attributes in mind. Remember, this is strong magick. It is for a permanent relationship so do not use it just to obtain a partner for a brief affaire. When ready lay the poppets on the altar, one at the left hand end of your sword, or athame, and one at the right hand end. They should be in front of the weapon. Also on the altar lay a piece of red ribbon, twenty-one inches in length. Petitioner: "O mighty God and Goddess, Hear now my plea to you. My plea for true love for ...(Name)... and for her desire." Petitioner takes up one of the Poppets and, dipping her fingers into the salted water, sprinkles it all over. She then passes it through the smoke of the incense, turning it so that all parts of the poppet get well censed. While doing this she says: Petitioner: "I name this Poppet ...(Petitioner's Name)... It is her in every way. As she lives, so lives this Poppet. Aught that I do to it, I do to her." Petitioner replaces the Poppet and picks up the other one. Sprinkling and censing it, she says: Petitioner: "This Poppet is her desired mate In every way. As he lives, so lives this Poppet. Aught that I do to it, I do to him." Petitioner replaces Poppet, then kneels before the altar with one hand resting lightly on each Poppet. With eyes closed, she pictures the two represented people slowly coming together, meeting, kissing and embracing. As she does this - which should not be hurried - she should slowly move the two Poppets along the length of the sword towards one another until they eventually meet. At this point she may open her eyes, and holding the Poppets together, face to face, say: Petitioner: "Thus may they be drawn One to the other, Strongly and truly. To be together always As One. No more shall they be separated; But ever fast together As One." The Poppets should now be laid in the center of the altar, with the sword resting across on top of them. For the next ten minutes or so, the Petitioner (if Solitary) or the whole coven may start to dance around and work magick, in the usual way, directed to the end of bringing the two people together. As an alternative, the Petitioner/Coven may simply sit in meditation and concentrate on seeing the two people together - happy, laughing, enjoying one another's company and obviously in love. This ritual should be performed on a Friday, during the Waxing Moon, and repeated on the following two Fridays. If the calendar is such that it is impossible to get three Fridays in the waxing phase of the Moon, then do it on a Friday, Wednesday and Friday. Always aim to have the final Friday ritual as close to the Full Moon as possible. Between rituals, if the altar cannot be left set up with the two Poppets on it (lying under the sword), then they should be taken (kept together, face to face) and wrapped in a clean, white cloth and put somewhere where they will not be disturbed. On the final Friday, after the above ritual has been performed, continue as follows: Petitioner: "Now may the Lord and the Lady Bind these two together, As I do bind them here." She takes up the Poppets and binds the red ribbon several times around the two, tying the ends together about them. Petitioner: "Now are they forever one, Even as the Gods themselves. May each truly become a part of the other That, separated, they would seem incomplete. So Mote It Be!" The bound Poppets are placed beneath the sword again and left for a few moments while the Petitioner meditates (no dancing or chanting this time). After completion of the ritual, the Poppets should be wrapped in a clean, white cloth and kept carefully where they will never be unbound. Candle Magick ------------- For hundreds, if not thousands, of years people of all races and religions have done sympathetic magick using candles. Not only are candles used to represent people, but also to represent things: love, money, attraction, discord, etc. By burner different types of candles and manipulating them in various ways, much magick can be done. The candles can be of any sort, it is the color that is important. For this the following tables are important: Table 1 - Astral Colors ----------------------- Primary Secondary Sun Sign Birth Date Color Color ---------- ------------------- ------- --------- Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 BLUE Green Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20 WHITE Green Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 WHITE Pink Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 RED Yellow Gemini May 21 - Jun 21 RED Blue Cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22 GREEN Brown Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 RED Green Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22 GOLD Black Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22 BLACK Blue Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 BROWN Black Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 GOLD Red Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 RED Brown Table 2 - Symbolism of Colors ----------------------------------------- White Purity, Truth, Sincerity Red Strength, Health, Vigor, Sexual Love Light Blue Tranquility, Understanding, Patience, Health Dark Blue Impulsiveness, Depression, Changeability Green Finance, Fertility, Luck Gold/Yellow Attraction, Persuasion, Charm, Confidence Brown Hesitation, Uncertainty, Neutrality Pink Honor, Love, Morality Black Evil, Loss, Discord, Confusion Purple Tension, Ambition, Business Progress, Power Silver/Gray Cancellation, Neutrality, Stalemate Orange Encouragement, Adaptability, Stimulation, Attraction Greenish-Yellow Sickness, Cowardice, Anger, Jealousy, Discord Table 3 - Days Of The Week -------------------------------------- Sunday Yellow Monday White Tuesday Red Wednesday Purple Thursday Blue Friday Green Saturday Black Candle magick can be done on your regular altar, but since many rituals require that the candles be left setup for a period, it might be a good idea to use a supplementary altar. This could be a card table, coffee table, box, top of a chest of drawers - almost anything. You will have a white altar candle (with God and Goddess figures on either side, if you wish). In front of this will be your censer, water and salt. These are the basics. Now let's look at a typical candleburning ritual. The one "To Win the Love of Another" makes a good example. On one side (the left) of the altar place the candle representing the Petitioner (either yourself or the person for whom you are doing the ritual). On the other side of the altar place a candle to represent the one you wish to attract. Here let me interject to say that you should NEVER try to interfere with another's free will. Therefore you must not perform such a ritual as this, aimed at a specific person. For the second candle, use one for the type of person you wish to attract. For example, you might use a pink candle if you desire someone loving and affectionate; a red one for someone energetic and sexually strong. Or you could use a Cancer (sun sign) candle for someone sensitive and home-loving; a Leo candle for a forceful leader; a Virgo candle for someone analytical and painstaking. With any of these, of course, you cannot find just one or two colors to signify all that you might want in a lover, so you might prefer just to go with a plain white candle. Whichever you use, you can elaborate on your desires when you "dress" it (see below). For the Petitioner's candle (on the left), go by Table 1, according to birth date. The candles of the two principles must be "dressed" before use. This is done by anointing them all over with oil. If you cannot obtain special candle-anointing oil then ordinary olive oil will do. Rub the candles from the center outwards, concentrating your thoughts on the person represented as you do so. See yourself (or the Petitioner) as you rub the first candle. Mentally name it, saying that it represents you (her/him). For the second candle you will not be using a name, of course, but concentrate your mind on the attributes you wish for in the unknown person you want to attract. Next to each of these ASTRAL candles stand a RED candle. From Table 2, you can see that RED = Strength, health, vigor, sexual love. These red OFFERTORY candles, then, will ensure that you are both attracted to one another for those reasons you already have in mind. Now for the actual attraction part. Beside your own Astral candle stand a GOLD candle. Again from Table 2, you can see that GOLD (or Yellow) is for attraction, persuasion, charm, confidence. So by your charm and confidence you are going to attract the person you want; to persuade her or him to come to you. Your altar is now set up like the diagram below (hope you can understand it). The ritual is started by drawing a circle about you and the altar, with your athame (or sword), and consecrating it as usual. Now meditate for a moment on what you want to achieve. Altar Diagram |____________________________________________________________________| | | | | | O = God Figure O = Altar Candle O = Goddess Figure | | | | | | O = Censer | | | | | | | | O = Red #1 | O = Red #2 | | O = Petitioner <---------------| O = Astral | | O = Gold | |____________________________________________________________________| Light the candle representing the Petitioner and say: Here is ... (Petitioner's Name) ... This candle is her/him. This flame burns as does her/his spirit." Light RED #1 and say: "The love of ... (Name) ... is great and is here shown. It is a good strong love and sought by many." Light ASTRAL candle of the love desired and say: "This is the heart of another; one whom she/he will love and desire. I picture her/him before me." Light RED #2 and say: "The love she/he has for ... (Petitioner's Name) ... grows with this flame. It burns as does the light and is forever drawn towards her/him. Great is the love that each has for the other." Light GOLD candle and say: "Here draws the one towards the other. Such is their love that all feel its attraction. This candle burns and draws them ever near. Powerful is the persuasion. Ever does he feel the pull; The thought of her is constant. His days are long with yearning for her, His nights are filled with desire. To be as one, together, is all that he would wish. To be as one, forever, is his immediate need. For no rest shall he find until beside her he does lie. Her every wish he'll move to fill to serve, to live - not die. He cannot fight a pull so strong, nor would he think to fight; He wishes but to ride the stream to her, at journey's end. Where the sun goes up shall her love be by her; Where the sun goes down, there will he be." Sit for a moment before extinguishing the candles (which should be blown out, not pinched out). Repeat the ritual every day, moving the ASTRAL and RED #2 candles one inch towards the Petitioner each time. Continue daily until ASTRAL and RED #2 finally touch the PETITIONER. You should be able to see the sympathetic qualities of the above ritual. This is typical of candleburning magick. There is obviously insufficient room in this lesson to give you all possible rituals. You can make up your own or you may prefer to purchase a book on practical candleburning rituals. Candleburning magick can be done by a whole coven, with one or more speaking the words and doing the lighting and moving (where necessary) of the candles, or by the solitary witch. Blessed * Be {!} - From an Acolyte's Notebook - {!} by Acolyte Brynne Last week there was no "From an Acolyte's Notebook" and lo and behold, I received mail this week that many of you missed it. So, in keeping with what I started a few weeks ago, here's a report I wrote for my Friday, March 8, 7-9:00 p.m. WAT shift. Names of avatars have all been deleted to preserve their identities. There was one very sensitive incident which occurred that night which I still feel very badly about. ---------------- Well, this is getting to be a habit ... these shifts from hades, that is. In order to cope properly with the last hour of this shift, I would have needed four computers, four phone lines, four CIS accounts and lessee ... 2 arms and 1 head for each of those ... ACK! I'd have been a FREAK! Okay, here goes. The first hour was slow and easy. Not many pages, avatars coming and going pretty quickly in the VCC. I was the only Acolyte on duty but based on the first hour, I figured it would be a piece of cake. Yeah, right. Gonna do this in order of the pages until all hell broke loose. At least 16 pages ... but there were more that I couldn't write down fast enough ... heck, couldn't even READ them let alone write them down and try to answer them. 1. An avatar from the Argo sent me a frown face when I asked how I could help. No reply when I asked what was wrong. 2. Someone paged to ask "isn't there supposed to be a Kategories game?" Had to apologize and say I hadn't printed out a copy of the ESP! Schedule, so I wasn't completely sure. ::sigh:: *gotta* remember to print those things! 3. An avatar first asked "where is my ghost?" Upon receiving the reply about the eye in the sky and telling him how to unghost, he asked "how do I become human?" Repeated my instructions on how to unghost. 4. Didn't reply when I asked how I could help. 5. Was asked how to get a bingo card. Referred the avatar to the Forum Library. 6. Avatar replied "I think I can handle it", but didn't say what it was. 7. Someone paged to say he and someone else wanted to get married, could I do it. I asked when, reply was tonight. Had to reply that I couldn't perform a wedding as I was on duty, the only acolyte on duty; suggested that if they definitely wanted the wedding tonight, he should contact an acolyte after 9pm WAT when there would be more than one on duty, or, if they wanted to set something up within the next few days, I'd be happy to officiate. Gave him my UID number. It was at this point that the road to Hades opened up before me. Donning my flameproof jumpsuit, I headed in that direction. Pages 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 all came at the same time. There were a few others sandwiched in there that I remember but couldn't write down. And one of those who paged actually paged me *SIX* times. Needless to say, all those pages, continuing ESPs from previous pages and the conversation going on in the VCC scrolled my screen so fast that I had to keep scrolling back and manually typing in the To box to ESP. 8. no reply 9. I have ?? after this; don't know if this person answered me, if I got back to him/her or what. 10. This avatar paged twice. Someone was cussing her out. She kept sending me ESPs giving me details, but they were scrolling so fast that I couldn't keep up with them. Remember answering her that she should turn off ESP and leave the locale, and was talking with her throughout the following conversations. 11. Of *all* avatars, Sunrays should *KNOW* better than to send six pages in a row. He was paging me to report that someone had stolen his head. Throughout the next five minutes or so, while I was dealing with a page from the Argo, pager #10 and the VCC visitors, I learned that he'd set the head down next to a vendo to buy something and this avatar with a number had swooped down from ghost mode and taken the head. All I could reply to him was that he should know better by now than to set something down like that. 12. Paged from the Argo: "What's on the other side of the door?" I replied. There began an ESP conversation that lasted through the rest of the shift because this person really needed help. I tried as much to help as I could; s/he was having problems just getting the tokens from the chest, despite my four ESPs explaining how to do that. When Zippy came in at 9pm, this avatar was still on the Promenade and I asked Zippy if she could offer assistance as I was going to try to find the next pager. 13. This avatar paged me to report that someone had stolen a chest that someone won at a game. At the time she paged, I was still dealing with four prior pagers via ESP and the VCC was full ... there was a con going on in there at the same time as I was trying to deal with all these pages (a well-known thief was there at the VCC and causing problems). 14. While pager #13 was ESPing me, another avatar paged to tell me that someone had stolen his pipe. I know I carried on an extensive conversation with this avatar but I remember very little of it because I was so distressed with the ESPs that were coming to me from pager #13. The thief had changed his name to something else and was at the Observation Deck (I think) where he began abusing Pager #13 sexually and my screen went crazy with the avatar ESPing me: "Help! I'm being cyberraped!" I'm not going to go into all the ESPs I got from her. It was very painful. She was in a panic situation and I was not able to give her the undivided attention she needed. In the meantime, I'm still dealing with the avatar and his stolen pipe, another one and his stolen head, the con going on in the VCC and then another avatar began ESPing me about what was going on with pager #13. I came out of ESP long enough to ask what the heck was going on in the VCC. Honestly, I was so busy trying to keep up with what was going on with all the pages and ESPs that I was missing all the action. I figured out that *someone* had conned a con (i.e. someone got some- thing from the thief there ... an avatar was in the ghost cloud and began ESPing me with a lengthy explanation of what had happened ... all the while I'm still getting a blow by blow description of what was happening to Pager #13 and she was "yelling" "Why are you letting him DO this to me?" Then she began accusing me of being one of those males who are pretending to be a female and that's why I wouldn't come to help her. I knew my top priority at that moment was helping her. I knew she was upset and that she didn't really mean everything she was saying to me. Good thing I've got tough skin and lots of patience. Then two others paged me about some problem that was going on at the Library and they wanted me to come and take care of it. I apologized to both of them, telling them that I just could not come, that they would have to try to deal with it themselves, that I was alone on this shift, being paged to death. I know there were other pages that hit my screen during all this, but I stopped trying to keep track of them. My ESP menu box was changing second by second and I had to keep typing in the names. Once I stopped writing down who was paging me, there was no longer any way for me to answer them as their pages were scrolling off my screen at an incredible speed. I remember Zippy paging me and I yelled for help ... it was a bit before the end of my shift ... I'd ghosted amidst the group that was in the VCC and everybody started to leave ... soon I was all alone on the ghost cloud and no one was in the VCC. I focused all my attention on Pager #13 after turning my duty flag off. Got her calmed down. She told me the perpetrator was at Meditation Park and I started to head over there. Once I got to the temple, I ESPd her again, only she'd left the world. A few minutes later, I got an ESP from her other avatar and she told me that the perp wasn't at Meditation Park anymore, that he was on the Starway Observation Deck harassing them again. I changed course and headed over there, but by the time I got there, he'd gone to the VCC and only Pager #13 in her other avatar and several others were there. I gave them all a speech about how NOT to be a victim. A few of them were upset with me and left the deck. Then only Pager #13 was there with one other avatar. I talked to them both for a good 45 minutes about the whole situation, giving them ways to deal with people like this so they wouldn't be victims of abuse. Told them they can only be victims if they *allow* themselves to be. Had to get pretty personal about my own history as an incest survivor to help her understand that I *was* sympathetic to what had happened to her. She also has much the same history as I have and I told her that as children, we had no choice but to be victims. But in our adulthood, we *do* have the power *NOT* to allow ourselves to be put into that role. And most especially not in a cyberworld like this where we *do* have options. Zippy and VIQer were left to deal with the thief and cyberrapist and just before I left, Zippy told me that the thief had returned the chest and she thought that he was apologizing to pager #13. Can't wait for turfs. The room beyond my door in the 4-room turf is going to be my padded cell, where I will go and beat on the walls at the end of shifts like this. Right now, I'm going to grab a pillow and kill it. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Kymer-conomics ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Kymer-conomics! - {!} by Mufasa, Financial Editor Tokens Talk ----------- Following the text of this column is the summary of auction prices for September 1-14, inclusive. Readers will notice the unglamorous text- and-tab format. Ever try to use a graphics program on a laptop? That is an activity recommended for the strong of eyesight and the even of temper, not for cranky, jet lagged jungle cats. It has been more than a month since we lost the paint patch and paint prices may be making an upward move, but no more than two cans of any one color have yet been sold at auction. It is simply too early to tell. Prices for the popular Scarlett and Snowman heads have continued to rise, and the Scarlett can be expected to climb into the ionosphere as inworld husbands and beaux begin searching Kymer for that perfect Christmas gift. Rocking horses and gingerbread houses have also climbed sharply, but prudent buyers will exercise caution when purchasing autumn and winter seasonal items. Remember that what Morpheus has given once, Morpheus can reissue. Although it is only August, let auld acquaintance with ferns not be forgot! Also worthy of note are steep drops in the prices of Bag_O_Chips heads and the infamous brass spitoons. The Econo-Lion advises those who really want chips heads to test their mettle at trivia, ghost racing, or any of the many weekly games in Kymer in which these heads are awarded as prizes. Those who are hoping to park their Fern Heads in gold spitoons would be well advised to wait, pending better infor- mation on how many of these are tucked away in the chests and lockers of the canny Acolytes who scooped them up when Teresias accidentally left them in the Fern Day Commemorative Prize vendo. Heart chests have risen modestly, but lacy heart heads and rose heads are still significantly below the August average. If you want any of these items for yourself or to give as a gift, buy and enjoy, but don't believe those who claim that these are outstanding investments. Kymer has been so flooded with these items that it will be months before any of these items rise above nominally-rare status. The Games People Play --------------------- Most of us have been asked by new avatars, "What can I do to get more tokens?" One of the main bits of advice given to them is "play games". Some avatars, including congenitally risk-averse Lions, shy away from bingo, roulette, and lotteries. If your passport to Kymer is a 486 with 8 megabytes of memory, ghost racing and other machine-dependent games are not for you. What, then, are some good ways to add to one's net worth? If you have a mind like an attic, by all means visit Megret's Madhouse or Duck Hunt for Trivia. Both Megret and the Duckolytes are very generous with nice prizes, and a fair-to-good trivia player can easily emerge from the game with a prize worth 1500-2000 tokens. The weekly winner and first runner-up in Duckolyte TriviaMaster rarely leave with prizes worth less than 3500 tokens tucked in their avatarian pockets. If you enjoy word games, then play Boxerama with Jal and Suz. The hosts announce a category in advance, and each round consists of an puzzle to be unscrambled. The winner of each round selects a number which matches a box. Some of the prizes are of nominal value, but there are several valuable prizes every week. Those who have been citizens of Kymer for a few weeks and are familiar with Dreamscape geography and who are highly intuitive will enjoy "Pinkie & the Brains", a game which is a combination of riddles and hide-and-seek. The winner of every round receives a secret surprise which is worth a minimum of 1000 tokens. The Best Deal In Town --------------------- Avatars who aren't gamers, but who want to add to their net worth can do so by participating in the Poetry Pantry hosted by Megret and sponsored by the SunRay Knights. Some avatars showcase their own poetic creations at the Pantry, but if you have a high school or college anthology in the house, you can present a short poem by any author who died before 1880, and receive a rare gift. The Econo-Lion's family turf has been handsomely furnished with rose heads and other nice gifts given for presenting poems at the Pantry. Anyone who can read and can type can participate, and some of the best presentations have been poems by German and Spanish avatars. A Lamented Demise ----------------- Many of the regulars greatly miss "What's In the Box?", which was co- sponsored by LeadMan and the SunRay Knights. This was a combination trivia and guessing game that was fun and extremely lucrative. We hope that LeadMan and the SunRays will resurrect this one very, very soon! Tantalizing Tidbits ------------------- Avatars who are curious about CyberCity96 will be pleased to know that the software can now be downloaded from this site: ftp://ccity.iwe96.infoweb.or.jp/pub/agora_client/v081/full/*.* This server is not accessible from all Internet providers, so you may have to access it from your computer at work, rather than from your home PC. Kymer Happenings ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Kymer Historical Society - {!} By Doc Moriarty New Turf Now Displaying Rare Items In Two Rooms Last Sunday we decided to move from our old 2-room headquarters to the new KHS-turf with 4 rooms. It was necessary due to the amount of items we have collected by grateful donations and loans from all our supporters and that we wanted to display in an appropriate way to our audience. Now we are preparing for keeping the turf KHS open more hours to give more people the opportunity to visit the pre-release of our Museum (it is still not the final museum). Stay tuned for announcements of open- ing times in the forum (GO AWAYFORUM) and for our inworld advertisers who will announce opening times inworld as long as the turf is held open. The turf will always be open at our regular meeting hours on Sundays between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm WAT. So use this opportunity to visit turf KHS and have a look at items like the Spider_Web, red Space_chest, Gingerbread_house, Rocking_horse, Torgerson_bear, Fern_Day_Commemorative_Prize, very rare Beta test Pizza! (no seafood ) and many others. We had already more than 50 satisfied visitors on Wednesday who all liked the idea very much and contributed sometimes spontaneously after visiting the museum. There is no entrance fee but we expect a small donation for turf lease and new items from avatars who can afford it (also in current items). Also rare items on loan basis (for at least 2 months) are always very appreciated if you feel that your special rare item is missing in our show. Currently registered as turf owners and therefore also allowed to collect donations and loans for KHS are: Doc Moriarty Dennis R. Gloree PK's sister Proud Feather, Duckolyte Wing Special thanks to Kotto's (shop for rare items) for loans and support as well as to Proud Feather for his help in moving to the new turf (he paid the rent) and for his grateful loans (red space chest, ginger- bread_house, ornaments ....) that made the latest success for KHS possible. And also many thanks to all other donators who supported KHS to bring this museum to all people inworld. Currently we are searching people who would help by doing inworld advertising (you will need WAMACRO.EXE, downloadable in the forum) while one of the turf owners will be in KHS to hold the turf open. Contact Doc Moriarty inworld or at CIS-ID 100627,1353 or visit us at our regular Sunday meeting at 1:00 pm WAT in turf KHS. The next step for KHS will be to assemble some historical information about the items we currently have and to upload it to the forum to give you more information about WA and it's history. If you have hints, information and little stories about items, especially from beta times or around christmas last year feel free to share your info with KHS and send them to Doc Moriarty to help with this task. Visit the pre-release of our Museum next Sunday and have look at our collection : Date: Sunday, September 22 Time: 1:00 pm WAT Turf: KHS PS: No, the items we display are *_NOT_* for sale ... They are a historical collection of many items that have been available during the history of WA and to show them to all interested people. There will be three categories for this year's contest which will allow all citizen's of Kymer to be involved. Come join the excitement at turf Bloodline and bring your dancing shoes. Join the fun and RSVP to enter the Bloodline Dance contest today. The contest will be held on the following dates this month: Lady contestants only: September 15, 1996 Male contestants only: September 22, 1996 Pair contestants only: September 29, 1996 You ask how does one dance in WorldsAway? Well, this is where an avatar must be creative with using mixes and matches of emoticons for the dance routine. Dance routines should be no longer than two minutes please. Changing of bodies genders will not be accepted at this event. Using a different body gender for their special moves will not be accepted (ie: no male body types allowed in the ladies' competition, no female body types allowed in the mens', pairs must be 1 male & 1 female). All judges' decisions are final and any out busts during the event will be cause for elimination of the event and dismissal from the turf. Deghosting during someone's performance is cause for warning and if it occurs again you will be ejected from the turf and not welcome to return. Thieving will not be tolerated and is automatic grounds for being removed from the turf and will be ejected if you return. Entry fee for this event is 50T per contestant which means pairs will need to have an entry fee of 100T for the event. All contests are at turf Bloodline at 6:00 p.m. WAT. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finalists of each contest held. First place will receive a rare beta trophy engraved special for the event. Second and third place will take home a lovely vase of flowers for an extra special touch to add to their turf. In order for us to better serve our avatars, we ask that you RSVP to Marianne G at 72007,221 no later than September 14 so accommodations can be made. Ladies, we understand this is short notice for you to prepare for the event but hope you will attend and ask all candidates to ESP Marianne G once you have arrived for the event. Any questions may be ESPd to SunRay Fantasia or Acolyte BLD Stalker. Or email Stalker at 76571,1241 or Marianne G at 72007,221. "Get Blooded, Join The Bloodline!" {!} - Megret's Madhouse: Trivia CHALLENGE! - {!} By Megret, SRK Probably the question I get asked most often is, "Where do you get your questions?" Well .. there's a long story behind that, so bear with me. In 1980 I broke my back, and rapidly learned that I had to do some growing both spiritually and intellectually if I was going to be more than a complaining, tiresome bother. I always collected rare books, as did my mother before me, and her father before her. So my home is crammed with well over 15,000 books, of which over 100 are dictionaries, including the full 17 volume OED, and several different encyclopedias from different eras. Still, 1980 was over 10 years ago, and most of the books in the house have been read and re-read; so, with the help of a couple of reference librarians, I started studying different topics as they interested me. I was not, and do not study to obtain any more degrees -- but for the joy of learning, and the need to keep myself busy in a world where I occasionally go for several months without seeing anyone but medical personnel and my husband. As I study, I take notes. I always have, so there's more than 20 years of notes available -- and that's just for starters. With CD-ROMS available, I also use the usual references that others use in Trivia games: the Multi-pedia, and Encarta, as well as "the Great Books" -- but I still study *something* for a minimum of three hours per day. And my reference librarian friends are always willing to collect odd facts for me -- so those often find their way into my Trivia games too. There will always be questions about certain things I believe everyone should know: how to read a question, how to find something in a library, how to figure out the meaning of words from Latin and Greek roots, the "basics" of any cultural model, in any century, and any country. So my questions often come from source material, as well as all the rest. (Source material means the original material written by people who were actually there living at the same time they are writing. It can be historical, but is more often letters, diaries, and contemporary criticism of one another.) For example Luna Solaria gave the correct answer according to the OED about the original meaning of Chauvinism; but the OED uses published materials as its source, while I had gotten my information from source material -- in this case of letters from the era, showing quite a different "original" meaning ž a meaning that died when Jean Chauvin died. It's like the rivalry between Shakespeare and Boswell ž if you don't know the description his contemporaries gave of Boswell, you often miss the snide references to Boswell in Shakespeare's plays. Trivia CHALLENGE is just that, a challenge, both to myself and to the players. In my heart, I suppose I am a frustrated teacher; in my game I try to make it enjoyable -- but still force my guests to think, and think hard! I do tend to repeat topics, until I *know* my regulars have the basics -- for example, all regulars know how to find the Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species and breed -- ie, how to use scientific classification. Right now I'm running the same type of repetitive questions about Library Science -- hang in there, and all of a sudden it will be easy! And of course, we are still working on Latin and Greek.... But it's a game, so hopefully no one really notices that they are really learning anything! Monday 10 AM game: 1st Place: PollyMolly, 16 points- Mystery Chest (Bronze/blonde Rosehead w/matching body paint.) 2nd Place: Erik, 14 points - Mystery Box (spittoon) 3rd Place: Docolyte Purpleman Martian, 13 points Mystery Box (golden rosehead) Booby Prize: Cinnamon Girl, Mystery Sack Monday 7 PM Game: 1st Place: PollyMary, 16 points, Mystery Chest 2nd Place: PhishHead, 15 points, Sack 3rd Place: Harlequin-Chief GK, Mystery Box Booby Prize: Nad-Man Wednesday, 7 PM. A perfect half time score by PollyMary, tying Purpleman Martin's record. 1st Place: PollyMary, 18 points, Red Space Chest (empty) 2nd Place: DreamLover, 15 points taking a Mystery Box 3rd Place: Sir Alexander, 14 points, taking a Mystery Sack Booby Prizes (two, since we had more than 30 players at the height of the game): Daeren, took the black rosehead with black body paint, and SunRay Knight Mage FineDude objected to a fern head since it was recently sold in a vendo, and chose a white rose head instead. Friday, 7 PM (when we had to go to a speed round to break all ties. Scores include scores from the speed round) -- this was also a night when almost everyone crashed at some point in the game... Some returned, some did not... 1st Place: Erik, 15 points, took the Mystery Chest 2nd Place: PollyMary, 14 points, took the Mystery Sack 3rd Place: PhishHead, 13 points, took a Mystery Box, reported it contained the Bag o'Chips head. {!} - Worlds Of Fortune - {!} By Sweet Suz Acolyte Data held another great game of Worlds of Fortune, on Tuesday September 10! He had great help with Acolyte Milen, Necrolyte White Rose, My name is Fancy! There were winners everywhere! With hosts and contestants making errors and creating much more fun ! Round #1 was a real hard puzzle which took Sunray Ann, LumMoose, Duckolyte Sr. Wing, and Deby quite awhile to find the answer. We think Acolyte Data was in a real bad mood when he picked SEA OF IO as a thing in Kymer! However, Deby came through and got the answer, just edging the other two contestants out in the last! They came right down to vowels! Wow Congratulations to Deby! The ghost winner of this round was Sir Alexander! WTG Alex! Round #2 was a real funny WW Phrase! Sunray Ann esped this phrase to Data and the fun started! John Fishman, MsJ and Golden Boy were the competitors for the round. John Fishman was the round winner when he came up with the answer PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY! I think we were all thinking the same thing! The ghost winner was Fluffy Cuddles! Congratulations and WTG to both John and Fluffy! Rder came out on top as the winner with the answer of NOSFERATU! Sir Alexander chose the Gold Spitoon as his prize! WTG Sir Alexander! The ghost winner of the round was Halfwit! Congratulations Sir Alex and Halfwit! With a great night going on, everyone was getting a little tired! The Ghost Championship Round came down to Fluffy Cuddles, Halfwit, and Necrolyte Sky Tower! The answer to the first puzzle was JANKOBEAN, however, when the ghost winner Jal2 won, White Rosežs father typed the answer to the puzzle on screen instead of Jal2žs name, and the round had to be thrown out and another puzzle started! So with Fluffy Cuddles, Halfwit and Necrolyte Sky Tower vying for the glory, Acolyte Data issued the next puzzle. It again was an Avatar Name with 8 characters this time. Halfwit became the Ghost Champion when he gave the answer MAGNOLIA! WTG Halfwit! The ghost winner of this round was Bert! Halce Chest as his prize! WTG and Congratulations to all the Winners! Necrolyte White Rose was so upset by her small flub that she actually took her own funds and paid Jal2 for the Game {!} - Boxerama Trivia - {!} By Sweet Suz Hi everyone! Regards to All! {!} - News from the Sunray Knight Poetry Pantry - {!} By Megret, SrK This week the Sunray Knight Poetry Pantry, held outside the library every Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 WAT was a bit overwhelming: 14 different people read, and many shared two or even three different poems! Sean shared one he had found on the Web, with the necessary permission to copy it included. Usagi read another original, "Jungle Twilight" -- not as mystical as some of his work, but I want to know who his publisher is in the Real World! (And Usagi, if you don't have one, get one! Your poems deserve a wider audience!) Grendel read, with permission from the author, "The Answer" by George Herbert. Just @ Dream surprised me -- I knew him from trivia, but never knew he was a poet! He read two originals that left me wanting more. DiMar read one of her own, as did Jenna Jade, followed by Lan Shark with a very unique "All watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace" -- I'm going to have to give that one some more thought. Jankobean read a couple of originals, but I was dashing off for more prizes and missed them ! Jankobean, can you mail me a copy of the one I missed??? Novalis showed up again, a long time favorite of mine who hasn't been at the Poetry Pantry in a while. And finally there was Project X who read his own work -- another poet hiding in our midst! One of the DISadvantages of holding the Poetry Pantry in front of the Library is the lack of ability to see who is lurking in the sky above. At one point we had over 20 ghosts, with 6 readers on the ground! I hope everyone enjoyed it all -- and don't forget to come back next week to read or listen! Either way, you're always welcome. {!} - Chaos - {!} By Sweet Suz On Thursday September 12, Marianne G held a fun night of Chaos in turf Dreamland! With her helper Acolyte Milen they held everyone in a state of confusion, as they drain your head of all names you have learned in the Dreamscape for things, places and people! This game everyone was competing against each other and particularly against Acolyte Milen! The object was a 500T pot which everyone would get their share of based on their scores and standing! Any questions that Acolyte Milen answered first would take all the points for that round and therefore no tokens were earned on that round! Well, we were able to hold her back a little but she did tie for 3rd place with 13 points! Here is a list of the winners for this weeks game! 1st place LumMoose, Duckolyte Sr. Wing 26 pts 2nd place Necrolyte Sky Tower 19 pts 3rd place Sweet Suz 2 13 pts Acolyte Milen 13 pts WTG to all players and thanks to Marianne G and Acolyte Milen for another great game! {!} - WA Raffle Winners- {!} By Acolyte Lynx Winners of September 15 Drawing 1st place . . . . . . . . .5000T. . . . . . . . .Wonnie-Emp Lady 2nd place. . . . . . . . . .2500T. . . . . . . . . . .Elektronaut 3rd place. . . . . . . . . .1500T. . . . . . . . . . . . . Phantasus Avatar Groups ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Avatar Groups - {!} By Lord Pumpkin Group Information ----------------- Hello everyone! Well this is my first article as Group Liaison Editor. Each week I hope to bring you information on a local group. I thought this would be very useful if you were considering on whether to join a certain group, or to check up on what other groups are doing that your group could copy! I will also include a quick write-up on what's new on the group scene this week and what to look out for. New Things This Week -------------------- The newest group in the Kymer family this week was The Secret Order of the Frogolytes. There motto? "DUCKS DUCKS DUCKS. Haven't you ever noticed there seem to be to many ducks are in our pond?" For more information feel free to ESP Frogolyte Leader or E-Mail him at 73514.164@compuserve.com, or pick up their forum message in the Worlds Away Life section Look Out!! ---------- This week's "Look out!!" section deals with everything from organized crime to unsolved mysteries. I have to give them credit; this group is like none other. The Mob is the first on-line criminal organization that I have knowledge of. (I bet you thought every group was here to help newbies). Their mottos include things like "Finders Keepers". Although all members are not known, sources say that there are about 11 including some well known faces. The other group is closer to being conventional. The LCN released their official group information this week in the forum. The entire group information took a massive 675 bytes of my hard drive. I think after reading that text message I had more questions then when I started. It was only after speaking with a rep that I found out what LCN stands for. Why is there so much mystery surrounding this group? Makes ya kind of want to join the group just to find out. LOL! Well all I can say is Jubal, Zorglub Ice, and Sith, great job. Group Talk - The Patch ---------------------- This week the group I interviewed was a fairly new group known as The Patch - Brotherhood of Pumpkins. I spoke with Patch rep. Lord Xopl about the group. ESP!: What was the main reason for starting the group? Xopl: The main reason for starting the group was to bring some unity and friendship between pumpkin kind. Also, I thought we could better serve the community and better sponsor fun events as a group. ESP!: What events will The Patch organize? Xopl: The Patch will be holding Trivia and Bingo soon we hope, but we mainly hold original events like a weekly football pool and Quick Change. ESP!: What about members? How many are there and what are your plans? Xopl: So far we have been small scale bringing in pumpkins. Currently we have 7 members. We feel the less members we have, the closer the group is. Also it gives each member more of a voice. ESP!: Plans for the future? Xopl: We hope to keep thinking of great new original games and bring lots of fun to Kymer. ESP!: Why should others be interested? Xopl: Everyone should be interested in meeting new friends and having fun. I must admit I am a member of the Patch (it's in my name), but I will still give my honest opinion. I found the group truly cares about their members. I have been involved with many other groups, and a lot of the time I felt left out or useless. I remember once I was even interrogated like a criminal for several minutes over ESP from someone who didn't believe I was a member of their group! (Not a happy experience!) With the Patch being as small as it is, each member has just a loud a voice as everyone else. This was one of the first groups that really felt like home. Well that's all for this week! I hope you enjoyed it! If you didn't or if you want me to do a profile your group or you just want to post something about your group, please feel free to E-Mail me at 104505,2313. Well, I did, for one week, and no one came up with an answer, even though I accidentally posted it right in the article . So, I have decided to get the contest going again. The Kymer Web contest will be run every other week. The question/ riddle/puzzle will be published in this newspaper, but it will also be posted on the previous Saturday at the Kymer Web contest page, giving you an ample head start. And since the first correct submission of an answer is the winner of the big prize (which will change from week to week), time is of the essence. Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
