Lord Pumpkin has accepted the responsibility for overseeing our "Phantasus Avatar Groups" section. Each week, he will be writing about one of the groups with his own thoughts about it along with an interview with its leader and/or founder. When he gets settled into this position and establishes a routine for himself, he will be posting in the forum, asking that any group wishing to be included in ESP! send him email with information. Look for more regular information about the groups and an updated list of just which groups are thriving! The Status of TWIP ------------------ As you will read in Sweet Suz' editorial, we received feedback this week indicating that the changes we'd recently made to ESP! by creating TWIP to handle all the gaming information had diluted ESP! and that it had lost its "zing". I must admit I had started feeling that something vital was missing from ESP! but being so close to it as I am, I couldn't quite figure out just what it was. I am grateful to Brains for taking the time to send me this feedback so that we could take steps to put that zing back into ESP! Jal, Sweet Suz and I have decided to discontinue TWIP as a separate publication and put all gaming information back in the pages of ESP! They will still be on the ESP! staff as Events Editors and we therefore ask all of you who have been supplying event related material to continue sending it to them. The Event Schedules will remain as we reworked them: two schedules, one in date/time format and one in category format, and they will continue to be in the zipped package as separate files. Jal and Sweet Suz have been a tremendous help to me in the behind-the- scenes workings of ESP! as well as in helping me put each issue together. I'm sorry to see TWIP go, but I'm right proud to have Jal and Suz as Events Editors on the best team in Kymer! What Are Your Thoughts On This Subject? --------------------------------------- Reading the article submitted by Cosmocat this week gave me paws for thought (sorry Cosmocat! ) and I thought that I would take the opportunity to not only share my mail to him in response to his article, but to solicit your opinions on the issue he raises. Before I reprint my email to him, let me give you a bit of my own history. I began my cyberspace adventure in February, 1989, after getting my first modem for the Commodore 64 I'd had for five years. First thing I did with it was get myself a Q-Link account (predecessor to AmericaOnline). My head exploded with the thought that I was no longer simply sitting in my computer room doing my thing on the C64, that I was actually reaching out to others all over the country. The interesting thing about QLink (and AOL) was that each user could have five screen-names (similar to the CIS UID). It didn't take long for me to see the role-playing possibilities in this (and until then, I'd never done any kind of role-playing!). I experimented with different roles in the various chat rooms, attended poetry readings and became a casino junkie ... until Club Caribe came out of beta and went live in July, 1989. I was dragged into Caribe kicking and screaming by someone who was then my Q-Husband and who'd become a CCG (Club Caribe Guide). He was never in the casino anymore and the only way I could spend time with him and other casino friends who had gotten hooked on Caribe was to actually go there myself. I didn't like Club Caribe the first couple weeks. I've never been one to explore maze type games (my sense of direction is not the best!) and Club Caribe was so enormous that I couldn't get myself oriented at first. I also was having difficulty getting used to the *graphic* nature of Caribe. I was so used to text- based games that this whole idea of a graphic, animated world literally threw me. But little by little I started getting caught up in the community spirit that was so dominant there, and found myself remembering landmarks better and in no time at all, I had the island all mapped in my mind. Then I set about trying to think about what I could DO there as my role in this wonderful, fantasy community that was developing! HualaiKhai was born. From the very beginning, Club Caribe had an inworld email system. We had paper in our pockets on which we could write messages and send them to the pockets of other Caribers. We could also use the paper as notes which could be placed on the ground for other Caribers to find. HualaiKhai became known as the "Happy Lady" because she began leaving "Happy Notes" all over the island, even inside garbage cans! Word about what she was doing spread around the Island fast and pretty soon, CCG Khoona approached her (me) asking if I would be interested in becoming a CCG. My first thought was "Oh, I could never do that! I'm not creative enough! I've never created games for others, never hosted games." But I stifled my thoughts of self-doubt in the meeting with CCG Khoona and asked myself: "how can I know what I can do if I won't even try?" Opening my mind to that thought led me to the most adventurous journey of all: the exploration of my own talents, abilities and whole self. CCG Ailana was born from that meeting with Khoona and for those avatars who've been around the WA forum for a while and who have read the many stories I wrote and placed into the Isle Caribe Library, the rest is history. I went on to create MalaiMouse, who hosted a game I devised called "Caribingo!", LockerLady who was the keeper of the keys for the Locker Building and who eventually devised a game called "Loot the Locker" for those lockers which were unrented ... plus several other characters for specific purposes ... DuckeeDee being among them. After I left Caribe in 1992, I found a new world ... a text-based MPRPG on GEnie ... something else another friend dragged me into kicking and screaming ... but once I got there, I loved every minute of my three years in Dragon's Gate, role-playing with Ailana Justivarian, who'd manifested herself as a dragonness in DG, and Khai Sparkwing, who was of a sprite-type race called "Secians" and known as healers. I also experimented with several male characters, my favorite being Cavanaugh VanWinterhaven, a member of the "Psycian" race, and created quite a history for him. My favorite of all my characters has always been HualaiKhai (and the other characters I've created using the "Khai" name), who in my mind I see as the "Goddess of Joy". When in my "Khai" mode, I touch the God- part of myself and tap that innate inner joy that is within each of us. So, there you have it ... those of you who've been around Kymer for a while know that my second avatar is Khai Joybringer, who hasn't been seen inworld since late last year. She still exists, but she's waiting for the right time to return to Kymer. Here's the email I sent to Cosmocat this morning: Hi Cosmocat! Hmmm.... interesting article. I agree in many ways because I've done role-playing in MPRPGs and it's pretty hard to envision me in real life as a dragonness with a scimitar in hand slashing away at a yelican (like a bear) or casting sleep darts on wretches that carry chests with silver and gems in them. And yet, many of the characteristics I gave my dragonness, Ailana, or even my character Khai (a healer) were characteristics that were within me already. My healing character focused on the subjective, emotional side of me, whereas my dragonness character focused on the objective, practical side of my nature. Although, I have always been able to separate myself from my characters and I always knew that whatever Ailana or Khai actually *did* ingame was not real, but their *relationships* with others behind the keys who played the game *were* real. Here in WA, though, I started out trying to do the role-playing thing, always trying to keep both Brynne and Khai in character. Eventually though, I came to grips with the fact that Kymer was *not* Caribe or Dragon's Gate, that the citizens of Caribe and Dragon's Gate were much more into the fantasy of their respective worlds than the citizens of Kymer were into the fantasy of Kymer ... in Caribe, Khai was welcomed and loved as the Goddess of Joy ... here, she was actually chastised for her joyfulness. So now, Khai is pretty much gone, even though I still have her as one of my avatars and may try again when we have inworld documents, and Brynne is who I really am in real life. So, while I know full well that there is a big difference between my inworld experiences and my outworld experiences, know how to deal with each one in its own turn, my work and my relationships with other avatars inworld are very real to me. I recognize those inworld who *do* play a role and I respond to them accordingly because they bring out the role-player within me. But I also recognize those who have no interest in playing a role and respond to them in a more reality-based way. Interesting subject you chose to write about. :) Sure would be nice if it would lead to others considering the same subject and submitting. (Always the editor looking for material! ) So what say you, readers? How do YOU feel about this subject? Do you role-play inworld or is the avatar we see inworld the you of YOU behind the keys? Let us hear from you! {!} - From The TWIP Editor's Desk - {!} By Sweet Suz This will be the last report from the Editor's Desk in TWIP. We are sorry to say that we will be going back to the old format of ESP! only. Our updated schedule set up will still be available; however, it will be known only as ESP! Jal and I would like to thank all of the Hosts, Acolytes, and Avatars who have made this Scheduling paper so much fun to work on! We will be continuing on with ESP! as Events Editors, so you will be seeing our columns like Host Spotlight! They may not be weekly, but they will be in ESP! We would like to thank Acolyte Brynne for the opportunity of working on TWIP. We are sorry to see it go; however, we do want ESP! to keep the great impact it has always had! The consensus is that ESP! was being watered down by giving up sections. Therefore the best action is to go back to the original concept! I hope you will like the Host Spotlight this Week! We have placed a great host in the Hot Seat! It is none other than our HotSpot! He is a great guy, with a great sense of creativity! This has been a great week on the gaming front, and with all the results listed, you will see that there are a lot of players walking away with some great prizes! The trivia games are increasing and there are a lot of people out there who must be looking up trivia information everywhere, for most hosts are saying that the average correct answer totals are rising! Either people are going after that info or a lot of people doing the same questions ! WARaffle information is coming to us from Acolyte Lynx for the Anniversary WARaffle Special Event! The date had to be set back by one week, so set September 28, 1996 at 2:00PM aside as there will be special games and prizes and activities planned for that day! As more information comes in, we will let all of you know ASAP! Well so long and farewell from the Editor's Desk of TWIP! By SunRay QTPie My life has changed beyond imagination since I took that first brave step through the rickety old door in China Town. My memory of a life before has returned to a large extent, gradually seeping back into my mind as my strength and confidence grew day by day. I don't feel bitter towards the people that lived in that world, though a first I was afraid I might. Life there had been so very unkind to me. They all left eventually. My father, mother, forgotten friendships forged in a dozen dreary children's homes. And then Jason. Perhaps the cruelest blow of all in the end. No. Not bitter. More sorrowful. Sorrowful that there are people living in this unending universe that will never even begin to know the peace and harmony I have grown so accustomed to. But my journey here did not end as I stepped through the portal from that other world. In may ways, that was only the beginning. There was still a long road to be traveled... The first few weeks went by in a blur. My head in a constant spin with the wonderful things that surrounded me. Oracle Uni had taken me that first day to meet some people gathered my a sparkling fountain. "Walk with them Katie. Explore this world. The only thing that will limit you here is your own imagination". I nodded nervously to the gathered crowd, the ghost of my "old world" insecurities clawing their way back into my soul for one fleeting moment. But as the day wore on I was amazed to find myself talking and laughing with these people, completely uninhibited. They gave me flowers and new clothes, and told me of how I had only to dream of what I wanted and it would become real. They taught me how to dream. And then I saw him... He was tall and majestic. Glowing with a brilliant aura that set my heart beating rapidly in my throat. Our eyes met in what seemed to be a moment frozen in time ... and we were in love. Months passed, and I couldn't have been happier. My love for Torran grew impossibly, until I felt sure it must be spilling out of me, leaving a trail of light and happiness behind me as I walked. Then, one day, as I was walking along Temple street thinking this very thought and smiling goofily to myself I came across a girl. I waved cheerfully as was my habit, and shouted out in greeting. But she didn't respond. She looked odd. Somehow not as solid as the other people milling around the street. In her eyes was a far away look that I didn't much care for. For the first time since leaving the "old world" I began to feel uneasy. "What is it?" I asked her. "Did you forget something?" She turned slowly to me, her eyes narrowing and focusing on my face. "Why are you smiling?" she sneered. "What is there to be so damn happy about?" I stepped back, unnerved by the harshness in her voice. "Why everything. Life is good". I smiled again, encouraged as she seemed to ponder this statement. But then, without warning she rounded on me and spat out words with such venom it was like being struck about the face. "You fool! Can't you see it? Look around you.. take a good look. Look into their eyes. Look into their hearts. These people wandering about the streets of Kymer, where do you think they came from? Huh? I'll tell you where they came from! The same damn place as you and me! We haven't changed! We're the same people... and you're a fool to think you can find happiness here anymore than you could over there!!" I stood dumbfounded as the evil words worked their way into my consciousness. She watched me carefully as I stared at the happy people about me. Could it be true? Could it really be so? I swallowed hard and blinked back tears as they began to swell in my bewildered eyes. A sneer touched her lips as she whispered into my ear... "Trust me girlie, you can't outrun your destiny.. it is much too fast." And with that she turned on her heal and marched purposefully off towards the turf building. I stood, unable to think or move. Scarcely even able to breathe. I was paralyzed by a gripping terror that seemed to slip it's icy fingers about my throat, and squeeze. "Boo!" I swung round, violently striking out at the person standing just inches behind me. Incapable of rational thought or judgment. Torran grasped my fist as it hurtled towards his chest and caught me up into his strong arms. "Katie?!" he was shocked, his face pale, his eyes filled with fear and concern. "What is it?? What's happened?" I stared at him, desperately trying to piece together the crazy mess of thoughts flying around in my head. And as I stared I saw a face from my not so distant past. A face almost forgotten. It was Jason. Jason who had left me that fateful night in China Town. Everybody left me. Isn't that the way it was? Yes ... I remembered!! My father ... my mother ... Jason... "We're all the same people... you cannot outrun your destiny...." The girl's voice came back to me, carried on a wind that blew along the street and lifted Torran's light hair out of his troubled eyes. I pulled away from him, slipping from his gentle arms as I began to back along the street. "No... oh no...." I was waving my hands protectively in front of me.. trying to block out his astonished gaze as I stumbled backwards along the cobbles. People turned to stare as I made my way trembling towards the turfs, never once letting Torran out of my sight.. "Stay away!!" I warned hysterically as he made a move to follow. "You are not going to do this to me.. not you.. not anyone!! You all leave in the end.. Just go now.. and save me the torture!". Once I reached what I deemed to be a safe distance I turned and fled for the turfs, hot rivers of tears staining my cheeks as I ran. I dove into the elevator and punched at the buttons on the wall, willing the doors to close. To shut out this cruel world that had played such a dirty trick on me. The girl was right. I had been a fool. My destiny did not lie in love and happiness. How could I have forgotten the pain of the other world?? Everybody left in the end...Everybody.. Why should Torran be any different than the rest? For weeks I locked myself in my turf. Refusing to see or speak to anyone. For hours I'd sit and sob into my pillow as I listened to Torran's impassioned pleas outside my door. Yet everyday he came back. Pleading, coaxing, cajoling. There were others too, friends, who came and sat vigil outside my door, talking to the silence inside my room. Each night as I laid down to sleep I told myself they would be gone tomorrow. They would soon give up. Cast me aside. As everyone I had ever known had done before. But each morning their voices rose with the sun. Some chatted about the goings on outside, some told long and fanciful stories of Knights and Dragons. Others sang ballads of love and compassion. And always there was Torran. His soft voice drifting over to where I sat and caressing me with it's words of love and understanding. At the end of the third week I could stand it no more.. "Why are you doing this?? What have I done to deserve it?? Why don't you just give up and leave me alone??" I sobbed at the door, collapsing on the floor as my knees buckled beneath me. "We'll never give up Katie" It was Torran, his voice calm and steady.. "We love you, and we'll never leave you". "Yes you will!" My voice was bitter, accusing. "The girl told me.. and she was right! Everyone leaves me in the end". "That was not a real girl Katie ... That was evil. And there is always evil, for without it there cannot be good. But you must not let it control you my love. Embrace evil, as we all have, and it will be powerless against you." His voice was so compassionate, and I was so very tired and alone. I reached up and unbolted the door. As it swung open Torran let out a sigh of relief and gathered me up into his arms as he kissed away the tears still streaming down my cheeks. "Oh darling, I have missed you so much! I never want to be parted from you again. Marry me, be my bride." And now I know that I have found Kymer. Not the place. But the feeling. The feeling ... that is the power which surrounds and protects those who live here. For Kymer is not a place of bricks and stones. You can only really find Kymer in your heart. Where it has always been, since time began. And every so often, as I walk along the streets, I come across the girl. She sidles up to me, whispering words of deceit and anger. But I am not afraid. I step forwards and take her into my arms ... she disappears the instant I touch her. {!} - Comments from Cosmocat: Virtual Reality - {!} By Cosmocat Well, I've been attending Oracle Uni's inworld class "Engaging in Virtual Process" for the last two classes, and I haven't learned much. Well, I haven't learned much about the topic. I have learned why the course is called "*Engaging* in Virtual Process" however. It has to do with seepage. Lots of messy seepage. Anyway, it seems Oracle Uni's views on the inworld experience differ from mine. She seems to think that there really is no difference between the "reality" we experience in the Dreamscape and the reality of life. I have a huge problem with this idea. While I do believe inworld experiences affect our outworld lives to at least some extent (we would have no memory of inworld experiences if they didn't), I don't think in most cases the experiences inworld are "real". Maybe I'm a cat-headed fool , but when I go inworld as Cosmocat, I am inworld as a character, not as myself, and the experiences Cosmocat has are his experiences, and only rarely influence my real-world life, and when they do, it's because I have stepped out of character. Maybe this is because I am not fully engaged in the experience. Which is exactly the way I want it to be. As an actor in the real world, when I am on stage playing a character, the events happening on stage are not real, just as the experiences happening inworld are not real, and if I allowed myself to experience the events on stage as being real, I would be in a psychiatric hospital. The same concept applies inworld--if I were so connected to what is happening, that I cannot separate what is happening inworld from my experiences outworld, I would be treading dangerous waters. Just because things are happening, does not mean they are real. My waking-world mind is separate from my virtual mind, and the things that happen are interpreted differently by each. Maybe this is not true of most people, but I would have to make a conscious effort to merge my waking-world mind and virtual mind. Most of the people inworld who will end up in therapy because of their Dreamscape experiences are those who will not or cannot disengage their waking world mind from what's going on inworld. By disengaging and keeping your avatar experiences in the Dreamscape, I think you can avoid a lot of the hurt feelings, betrayal, anger, and all those other fun things some people seem to have way too much of outworld because they believe their experiences inworld are real. You cannot know whether those you are dealing with inworld are acting a role or are being themselves, and because of that, you must be disengaged or you will be hurt. Now, it seems some people experience inworld things differently. The way Uni tells it, she is at times so engaged in the inworld experience that she seems to forget that it was an inworld experience. For example, she was telling us about an experience where, after dancing and floating around inworld, she experienced real sensations the next day when she relived the experience in her mind. Now, I am not a psychologist, but is this healthy? How far is this from not being able to distinguish reality from illusion? And how often do you think Uni has been hurt because she won't separate reality from virtuality? Just a thought. Anyway, I feel that the Dreamscape is appropriately named, and as long as it remains the Dreamscape and not Reality-ville, I will continue to disengage whenever possible. Whether or not others will do so, I don't know, but beware of the dangers that lurk in Kymer -- not all of them take the form of thieves and disrupters. Until next time, Cosmocat {!}- Host Spotlight -{!} By Sweet Suz Hotspot Is In The Host Spotlight Our guest this week as the Host Spotlight is none other than Hotspot! This avatar is a very interesting and fun loving host who has a lot of things on his plate in the AwayWorld. He is the host of Ghost Racing in the German turf named "Kunterbunt", he is a co-writer in a German newspaper and he is one of the hosts of a gaming section in a Kymer newspaper named "The SUN". He is a very inventive writer when hosting in the "The Sun" with challenging puzzles based on picture changes, circle locations, etc. This host has fried many a brain with his hot instinct in puzzles! He is friendly, and keeps everyone on their toes! Jal and I faxed our regular questions to Hotspot, and the answers that we received were fantastic and let everyone know what keeps him Hot! Lets continue on getting to know Hotspot! "Tell us how long you have been in Worlds Away." was the first question that we asked Hotspot. "My first day I visited WA was on Jan. 1st 1996, what a way to start the new year!" The next question that we ask all our hosts was ,"Tell us about your Newbie days/experiences?" "Like everyone, I guess, on my first days I was really lost. I tried to figure out the meaning of WA, trying to find out if there was a goal in this to reach. I met lots of wonderful people on my first days who really helped me a lot. I can remember one funny thing: Standing in front of the magic house, I asked someone how I could enter. He told me to go to V-Mart and to buy a shovel. Then walk behind the magic house to look for an X on the ground and to start digging. Soon I should find a trap door where I could enter ... It took me 1 hour searching for this stupid shovel in the V-Mart until I found out, I was fooled!" Tell us how you got started in hosting? "Well, it is really simple. I am a co-writer for a German newspaper, like ESP! and the Clarion, called "Traumbote". One day I wrote an article about the ghost-racing rules, and then I was asked by Acolyte Michael if I would like to host a ghost race in the German turf called "Kunterbunt" once a week. Actually, I had not much of a choice because they had all already decided that I was the right one for this job . So I just said yes, ... and since that day I can call myself a Host." From there he has also became of the Game Writers for the Kymer Newspaper "The SUN". "Tell us what it is like to be on the host side of things." Was the fourth question asked of Hotspot. "It is really not as simple as it looks when you are a player. You have to care for enough prizes (beg lots of people), earn enough tokens to buy prizes on your own, have to keep up with all the paperwork, (writing down all the players names, and the prizes won, and keep up the monthly standing for the winner of the month etc.). Hosting itself keeps you always busy, with lots of questions from the cloud and, and, and,...... But it is a lot of fun too!" Our fifth question was about Hotspot's likes and dislikes in WorldsAway. "I think I can say, I almost love everything here. It is so easy to met friends and lovely people from all over the world without having any prejudices, cause nobody cares about ages, sex and nationality. We are ONE WORLD living ONE DREAM. You can just have a heck of a lot of fun here. So, what I really like most are the people I meet." "Dislikes ? Well ... not to many. Thieves, well, guess we have to live with them. Somehow they are a part of all this, but I do not care too much. Maybe FSC could be a bit faster in building the city, and maybe try to fasten some screws on the server to make it work more often , But all in all, they really do a good job I think." "Tell us about what you see in your future with Worlds Away?" Was the next question asked of Hotspot. "Since my first day in WA, I really want to know what's inside the Magic House. I am SO curious to know. And I wish we all would have more abilities in our turfs: Furnishing and glue, and placing things on the wall. I just loved the Hostages_Held_Here at the Unity event. That's what I would love to do with my turf. Different types of walls, a real fire in the fireplace, burning candles, objects placed on the walls, etc." We finally asked Hotspot to tell us some RW things about himself. (Where you live, ETC) "My RW name is Frank. I am 26 years of age, living in Frankfurt, Germany earning my RW Tokens as a tax-consultant. My wife Carmen and I were married in 1994 in Las Vegas. I just love the States. I have been there several times, and have seen almost every place. I just have to thank my wife, btw, for letting me visit WA so often, and that she does not become too mad when I get up at 3 am in the middle of the night to take part at some of those big events. THANKS !!!" Hotspot is a great guy and we all thank his wife Carmen for letting him come on line and keep us entertained in our Dreamscape! Well that is all for this week, our host next week ? Well we may all have to use our "Imagination"! {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} by Witchy Reversing Spells ---------------- Almost all the popular spell books, books about candle-burning or praying for magical purposes have the primary goal of influencing another person. Fortunately most people who are initiated into the practice of magic have a highly developed sense of morality and are not interested in controlling others. However, this article is devoted to keeping yourself free of the magicians who don't feel that way. When you try to influence another person, for good or for ill, you are in some sense practicing a form of black magick. The black magician attempts to influence the subconscious of another person by changing his or her behavior, action, or emotional response. So all the curses, love spells, and spells to make debtors pay are forms of black magick. Black magick can induce feelings of hate or guilt, and high-pressure selling or emotionally oriented advertising is considered a form of it. Obviously there are many varieties and degrees of black magick - some forms are more negative than others - yet all are attempts to influence a decision of some sort. Any form of black magick involves karma. It is known as a form of "moral malpractice" and will be paid back as karma in a future existence. The concept that we need to understand is simple - eventually the soul will learn not to attempt to influence others. At the present stage of human development, however, many people decide that magick might as well be used to attain the ends they desire. This article is devoted to reversing the spells that may be sent your way by a student magician, or an individual who has studied magick to gain power over others. It is a relatively simple matter to break a curse, and I will show you how to do this with ease. But before we go into the reversing procedures, it is important to understand a little of what you may need to look for aside from knowing how to reverse a spell. Many people who think they have been cursed are suffering not from a curse, but from a lack of self-importance. People who are mentally unbalance, people who want to be powerful and important, sometimes think they have been cursed. And the curse itself gives them a feeling of importance. So you may do a reversing spell for someone who has convinced you that he or she is under some terrible influence, and when you have done the reverse work nothing changes. Which means that the person wasn't under any spell except the spell of self-delusion. That condition needs a cure, too, and if you are a spiritual practitioner, you will learn to redirect the individual in a direction that would be more beneficial. As you continue to study magick your senses will become more tuned, and your intuition and awareness level will spot certain conditions in people that you may not have noticed before. For example, you may see someone that you know who is obviously under some kind of spell, but the individual doesn't know it. When you try to say something to this person, he or she makes it clear that the change is one that he or she made on a voluntary basis. In this situation, you can do nothing. But you may be curious to understand how someone could change drastically and not be aware of what happened. Well, the human mind is a wonderful mechanism! The rational mind can explain any situation it finds itself in, and even the youngest child can provide a reasonable explanation as to why he or she did something. This process of self-justification - which exists uncontrolled in almost everyone - rationalizes any changes in behavior very easily, and can even convince us that the change is desirable. Some people may think they have been cursed, and it's a good idea to ask if they have been to a store-front psychic or fortune teller. Store-front psychics make money by telling their clients that they are cursed. Then the client pays the store-front psychic to take the curse away. Innocent people sometimes really believe this, and may come to you to have a curse removed. Before removing it, make sure it's there. The chances are that the person has no curse at all. Making money by fibbing about being cursed or under a spell brings its share of karma to the practitioner. The most common curse that might have to be broken is a petty curse set up by amateur magicians. Here, the student learns a ritual and it is successful, and this one success convinces him (or her) that he has great magical ability. This causes two kinds of problems. First, the student enters the realm of fantasy and thinks he has absolute control over his life and the lives of others through acts of magic. He rationalizes every failure and can actually block sensory awareness if the physical world doesn't correspond to the world of fantasy that he lives in. Magicians, or would-be magicians, of this caliber enter into a world of delusion and self-deception. They may continue to function in the real world to some extent, but there is a tendency to exert influence upon themselves which further encourages self-deception and delusion. Obviously this is an unproductive way to live. The student who has suddenly gained great magical powers may exert love spells, or other power spells on people he knows. If you attend a class, or go to a place where magicians meet, you may run into someone who will try to place a spell on you to test his or her power. This is idiotic, but it is done. And that is why you need to know how to reverse a spell, so you don't waste time in your own development by being de-energized by amateur power-seekers. True curses are rare. There are not that many magicians who are powerful enough to really perform black magick. In order to develop magical power, the animal instinctual nature has to be placed under control. Few people interested in the concept of black magick are willing to put the necessary work into preparation for study. When the instinctual nature is uncontrolled, it tends to accept credit for any successful performance of any magical act, and that acceptance acts as a block so that further magical operations are brought to a halt. Serious students of magick - who have really developed their magical ability to the point where they could really influence others - don't waste their time on negative spell-casting. The study of magick is really a course in self-development of a particular nature. When you start considering the evolution of the soul, who cares about whether or not you can make "Mary" love you? Now that we've discussed all the reasons why someone is probably not cursed in the first place, let's move on to reversing negative spells. The whole process of trying to determine who has cast a spell or curse is a waste of time. It really doesn't make any difference who did the work, the only important thing is that it is removed. Replying to a curse with a curse will only be an escalating factor in a war, and students who do this get caught in a magical-curse syndrome that may end up making them paranoid. Turn from the curse and break it, and let it go. Thank God it's gone, and don't look for negative effects around the one who you think has cast it. The following spells are excellent cursebreakers. They act to return curses and influences to their source. If no curse has been sent, the cursebreakers do not return to you or to the one who has used it. Reversing a Spell With Water ---------------------------- The water method of reversing a spell is particularly effective for spells which were originally cast with water, or spells geared to affect the emotions. This method is an excellent way to rid yourself of love spells in any of their many forms. You should perform the spell yourself if you have been the victim. If you want to help others to reverse a spell, remember that the spell should be reversed by the actual victim. Fill a small bottle with water. You can use a baby food jar, or a jar of similar size. Place at least a dozen straight pins in the bottle. Cap the bottle tightly and place it over a fire. The bottle may be placed on the kitchen stove. The bottle is heated until it explodes, which casts the pins all over the room. The pins and the broken glass should be cleaned up and placed in the garbage. Remove the garbage from the house immediately. The clean-up must be done as soon as possible after the bottle explodes. The purpose of this spell is to disturb the negative influences of the water element that are present in the home of the victim. This spell reverses any negative work, and attempts to restore balance to the "water element" presence in the victim's home. This is a very effective spell, and has been taught by practitioners of three different practices. I have used it with success several times. The bottle used may be of any size, although a baby food jar or a small jam jar is probably best suited for the spell because this type of jar only holds a few ounces of liquid. Ordinary tap water is used in the spell, and the steel pins used by dressmakers are fine. They should be placed loose in the bottle, after the water has been added to the bottle. You can use as many pins as you like, but you should use at least a dozen. Heat the bottle when no one is in the room. It's very important that no one should be in the room when the bottle explodes, for one may be hurt by flying glass or pins. The smaller the bottle, the faster it will heat, another reason for using a small jar. When the bottle is hot enough it will explode, strewing the pins and broken glass, as well as water, all over the room. The purpose of immediately cleaning up the mess is to remove the influence of the spell immediately. Once the influence is out of the house it is very difficult for the person who did the work to re-establish the connection to the house. Reversing a Spell With Fire --------------------------- This method of reversing a spell is particularly effective for magical work that has been done with fire. This covers the entire range of candle magick, as well as any magick intended to influence your thoughts. Some people may want to use this spell on a regular basis at the full moon, for it will provide protection against all of the usual negative influences from others which accumulate in the course of a month. You will need a coffee cup full of dirt and a candle to use this spell. City dwellers who do not have access to dirt in their backyards may use potting soil. You can use any kind of candle. Take a small candle (such as a birthday candle) and light it. Place it in dirt (in the coffee cup) while it is lit and allow the flame to stabilize. With a sudden motion, take the candle from the dirt and reverse it, extinguishing the lit end in the dirt. Bite the burned end off the candle and light it again, saying: As the candle flame is reversed, so let all that opposes me be reversed. As the flame has perished in the dirt, let those who oppose me come to nothing in their work. The candle is now left to burn out. When it burns out, put the candle and the dirt in the garbage and remove it from the home. This spell comes from Brazil, where it has been used successfully for many years. It has been considered an effective curse-breaker. If a curse is actually present, this spell often produces an immediate feeling of relief as soon as the prayer has been said. In some cases the relief can be impressive, as the spell may be done by one person for another. However, when this spell is done by a magician for another person, it should be followed by a spiritual cleansing and a blessing. Reversing a Spell With Earth ---------------------------- The following spell is especially effective against those spells which have been placed with earth. It should be used against curses which have been cast to prevent you from growing economically or prevent you from establishing your income. This spell comes from the Pennsylvania Hex practice, and the Hexenmeister who gave it to me swears by it. Take a small white cup (like the teacups used in Chinese restaurants) and fill it about half full with earth or potting soil. Place the cup in the corner of your bedroom and pray over it as follows: Thou art earth of which this whole world is made. Be thou my earth, and take unto thyself all that is sent against me. Bear thou that which is sent against me as Jesus Christ bore the sins of the whole world. Leave the dirt in the corner of your bedroom for a week, and then cast it out the back door of your house. If you don't have a back door, use the front door. Wait one night and then wash the cup with cold water. You may refill the cup with dirt and repeat the spell if you wish. You can place the cup in any corner you wish - the corner nearest the bed, for example. Reversing a Spell With Air -------------------------- This method of reversing a spell is particularly effective against spells which have been placed through the air element. The air element includes gossip, slander and all forms of spoken spells. This spell has been used to halt slanderous testimony in a lawsuit. You may use this spell for yourself, or for someone else. It frees you from slander. When done on a windy day, this spell has a particularly strong effect in returning the spell to the one who has cast it. Take about a teaspoon of finely ground sugar, add about a quarter teaspoon of white flour and a pinch of finely ground salt. Mix these in the palm of your hand while concentrating on your desire to be free of curses. Blow the powder out of an open window and immediately say: Here I stand in innocence; protect me of Lord! Reversing a Spell With Iron --------------------------- In certain cases spells are cast using iron. These spells are particularly malignant, for they often involve the use of iron to cause accidents to the person who has been cursed. A person who is under the influence of this type of spell may suddenly begin to have accidents with knifes, have progressively worse automobile accidents, and generally run afoul of sharp objects, machinery and so forth. Place three iron rings (the kind used for key rings) in an 8 ounce glass full of drinking water. Then cover the water glass with a clean white handkerchief, and let it stand overnight in the light of the moon. At sunrise the following day the victim of the curse must drink the water, which instantly breaks the curse. The curse usually returns to the one who sent it, but it may also dissipate into the universe. Reversing a Spell With The Low John Method ------------------------------------------ This is a favorite method of reversing a spell in the Gulta practice of "root working." It is used extensively among the black population of the southern United States. The root known as "Low John" (or southernwood root, Carlina acaulis, or ground thistle) is gathered and dried. If you feel you have become the recipient of a curse or spell, you take a small piece of the root and chew it thoroughly while concentrating on the curse (or spell) and its effects on you. Once the piece of root has been reduced to a pulp, it should be vigorously spat out on the ground. This will cast the curse back to the sender. To keep it from returning, you should carry a piece of the root in your pocket for seven days. At the end of seven days the piece of root should be vigorously cast on the ground. Blessed * Be Witchy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Kymer-conomics ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Kymer-conomics! - {!} by Mufasa, Financial Editor Last week's column tracked prices through August 31, and there have been only three auctions this month. Because there has been no significant change in the averages for commonly-sold items, continue to use your End-of-Month charts for August until next week. Following is the schedule for charts through October 14. September 16 issue: Charts for auction prices September 1-14, inclusive; September 23 issue: Column only, no charts; September 30 issue: Column only, no charts; October 7 issue: September end-of-month wrap up; beginning October charts if warranted by changes in average prices; October 14 issue: Weekly charts resume. Why? The Econo-Lion is on the brink of her annual Arctic hegira. Modem plug-ins are scarce above the 60th parallel, and wireless modems don't work. Borealis and Australis will gather the auction data while the Lion is away. We'll file the September 16 and September 23 columns from California and Edmonton before heading for Inuvik, Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, and Banks Island (73 N, 123 W), and we'll file the October 7 and October 14 columns from California before returning home. But calculations and spreadsheets and .gifs in the high Arctic? Bless me mukluks and shiver me timbers, no! Market Musings -------------- Our position is that there can never be too many aftermarket outlets. The more auction houses, retail outlets, and street traders there are in Kymer, the more liquid avatars' investments are; the easier it becomes to upgrade collections; the more investment options avatars have; the sooner new avatars become interested in investing and collecting. Unfortunately, many auction houses have ceased operations or have cut back in recent weeks. The Sunray Vocc Auction is in hiatus now, the D-TREFF auction has not been held since the beginning of August, the Big Store has closed its doors, and Clover's auctions have recently been limited to only one ring. Since the last column, only Swifty, Clover, the Duckolytes, and the Elves have held auctions; the Elf auction was a special event, not a recurring auction. Why is this happening? Here are some hypotheses: 1) The law of diminishing returns There is almost nothing available for wealthy avatars to buy and nothing new for the middle class to buy. Newer avatars are interested in rare-painted vendo heads, rose heads, ferns, and other common collectibles; one can almost hear yawns from the ghost gallery as Kymer's long-time citizens endure a seemingly-interminable succession of these items on most auction blocks. 2) Lack of market segmentation In real life, few investment bankers shop at Marks and Spencer and fewer hospital orderlies shop at Harrod's. Connoisseurs and collectors flock to Sotheby's and Christies' showrooms. Although there are weekly auctions, it is unlikely that one will find a collector of rare porcelain attending a stamp auction. Avatars interested in the health of the Kymer economy may want to ask the Oracles to provide more items and to rotate vendo stocks, especially stock in the acolyte vendo, more frequently. We need one or two specialized auction houses in Kymer, offering moderately-to- extremely rare heads and items at biweekly or monthly auctions. We could also use one or two auction houses specializing in recently-rare and nominally-rare items only. 3) Inadequate support for game and event hosts All of us know from real life experience that a shopping list mitigates impulse buying, but rarely does away with it. Even the most seasoned shopper is likely to weaken when something especially tempting is on offer. Most prize heads, the August head being a lamentable and conspicuous exception, are sought-after and attract much interest when offered for sale. Avatars who can afford to buy these heads are often attracted by other items and may buy rare paint or an ornament while they wait. 4) Lack of seasonal items Today's seasonal items are the day after tomorrow's collectibles. The Christmas peppermint that sold for 10 tokens in December now attracts bids of 1500 tokens at auction. The same is true of all the other seasonal items. No seasonal items, other than picnic foods, have been released since the Valentine vendos were restocked. Some Valentine items are still stocked in the acolyte vendo. Avatars interested in fun today and an interesting aftermarket tomorrow may want to request more seasonal goods from the WA Team. Because fewer recurring auctions are operating in Kymer, Clover's Collectibles now has a four-week waiting period between consignment and sale. If auctions become so uninteresting or unprofitable that more regularly-scheduled auctions cease operation, collections will become much more illiquid, investment risk will become substantially greater, and it will be more difficult to upgrade. If you are concerned about any or all of these issues, send a short E-mail to the WA Team today expressing your concerns. Tantalizing Tidbits -------------------- At the Oracle Conference in July, Teresias spoke of a new Acolyte Training Program, then only in the planning stages. We've since heard on the pulses of Kymerian airwaves that the program is almost complete and ready for rollout. Could we receive a badly-needed infusion of new Acolyte power soon? Time will tell . . . Kymerian Kudos -------------- Picture this scenario: It is less than two hours before the auction, and you learn that your partners cannot attend because of real-world responsibilities. Also imagine that you must get six consignments to fill the auction, you have never been an auctioneer before, and you must conduct the auction in your second language, when it is the middle of the night in your time zone. This actually happened to Nonsense.Stone on Saturday. He obtained the consignments, started the auction promptly, and carried it off with flair and finesse, getting good prices for the consignors along the way. When Nonsense.Stone mentioned that he had no helper, l'il kt volunteered immediately, and was a gracious, capable assistant. Great job, Nonsense.Stone and l'il kt! Please feel free to pass on my E-Mail address to interested parties and I shall be happy to mail the details of future competitions. Each round will be the best of 5 "draws" and the final will be the best of 7 "draws". I have been asked to supply some decent prizes. Therefore, I will be giving away some fairly rare items as prizes to the winners. First prize for the 4th competition is a peppermint. The runner up will receive 500 tokens from my own coffers! I am not made of tokens, but will continue to run the competition as a non-profit making event. There is an entry fee for each competitor of 100 tokens. The pot of tokens will be used to buy the best rare item possible from the regular auctions and any tokens left over will be presented to the runner up as prize money. Therefore, I shall retain no amount myself. As always, all are welcome, including spectators. If you've not attended before, come along just to see what happens. Those who have previously attended have had lots of fun, although some do get rather trigger happy! On a separate note, I am considering a new event - Music Trivia. I attended an in-world music trivia quiz some weeks ago. It was a popular event with a number of competitors. However, it seems it was a one off and I have been unable to track down any other similar events. I would appreciate your feedback on this event. Naturally, I would hope to run it in a similar way to Quick Draw as far as prizes are concerned. Take Care all. Be seeing you! {!} - Megret's Madhouse Trivia CHALLENGE! - {!} By Megret If I'm going to start writing reports about the Madhouse, you need to know what is stored, and how it is stored in the room behind the door labeled "Work Room". First, I keep a chest full of boxed rare door prize items, and a different chest full of boxes with tokens. Before each game, I simply fill my pockets with three from each chest. That way I *can't* play favorites, no matter how much I may want to. There is another chest of boxed, or bagged rare items to be used as main prizes. Again, I simply pick up however many I need to have, three on the floor in the Prize Viewing area, and I don't know what is in any of the mystery boxes. Chests and bags, both empty and full are stored in yet another Chest in the Work Room. I try to always have at least one chest and one bag available as a prize, though neither a chest or a bag is guaranteed to hold a rare item. (Bags will always hold *something* though. And chests often don't.) I make sure there are at least 10 prizes available in every game, though I rotate the boxes that remain after each game, so regular players can't compare notes on who got what and guess what is in the other box. People who play should also keep in mind, that *no one* has, to date, had a perfect score, and the scores given include any tie breakers needed. Once, Purpleman Martin had a perfect score at half time - so far that's a record too. I've been hosting Trivia CHALLENGE since April, with the break last month due to illness. But for as long as I have kept records, the average winning score is 14 points, though the average is slowly sneaking up. The average total score is still only 9 points! I am aiming for a game average of 10 points. So, if you come to play, whatever you do, don't give up! And, since I tend to "build" on information given in previous games, you have a definite advantage if you come regularly. After the game, the top three players pick their prizes in the order in which they won, and then we pick the winner of the "booby prize" via the "pick a number method." So all the players who have won nothing, but have played the full game, and at least tried to answer the question, need to stay for the Booby prize! After the name is drawn, the winner of the "booby prize" gets to pick from whatever remains on the prize floor. So... With that in mind... Here are this week's results. Its one of the newest mediums for communication, accessing information, news, and pretty much everthing else that you can think of. Of course it isn't limited to peddling software and advertising and boring, endless, unrelated homepages. Actually, the web has recently become a place with a very large collection of WorldsAway related resources and information, mostly through avatar's personal homepages. There are also a few sites on the web that are not just personal webpages, but entire collections of pages about WorldsAway. I have myself put up one of those sites (with lots of help, of course), now called the Kymer Web. There are many features; the Duckolyte Homepage, the ESP! Homepage, and of course the links section. In doing research and finding links for the links section, I picked through hundreds of other pages that came up during searches on the Compuserve server and others. I admit that part was not all that much fun. However, once I did get all of my links together and listed (about 55 in all), I then had to check for broken links, relevant info, etc. Anyway- I have managed to browse around most of the 50 or so sites that I have linked to, and have found that each an every one has their own style and information, tailored as the web page maker saw fit. From now on, I will be reviewing a couple choice sites here every two weeks. The reviews will basically point out the positive parts of the site only, unless they happen to do something that I really hate :-). They will also be rated (based on my opinion) on a 5-star rating system (5 stars being highest, 1 star being lowest). So without further chit-chat, here are this week's reviews! 1. The Magnolytes Web Site (Emmanuelle)- [****1/2] --------------------------------------------------- This is a truly superb site. It is actually a group's site, but I hardly think of it as that because there is just so much there. The producer, Emmanuelle, has obviously put a lot of effort into this site, because it shows. From the background music and fire animations to the dripping blood borders, its a fun site to check out. Some other features on the site include: avatar profiles, group profiles, WorldsAway Utilities and other software for download, a discussion forum, and original cartoon artwork. Also, the other graphics on the site are excellent- 3-d titles and nifty buttons. Enhanced with frames, and even some JavaScript (I think), be sure to bring along a recent browser (Netscape 2.0 or later or Internet Explorer 3.0). The address is: http://www.europeans.com/magnolytes/. 2. Kiwi Studios (Angel Gambler)- [****] ---------------------------------------- This homepage certainly has the best graphics and colors that I have seen assembled in one avatar's personal homepage. This is a commercial site advertising Angel Gambler's graphical services. The Backgrounds are colorful but not distracting, and the headers, titles, buttons, and sample artwork all is amazing. There are also some sharp-looking 3-D renderings and raytraced pictures, sample backgrounds, and original avatar art (avatars that look like anything you want). Angel Gambler usually has an ad near the bottom of ESP! in the advertisments section, so go there for the info on the service that is being offered there. The address is: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/1016/. Be sure to look here in a couple weeks for the second installment! These reviews will be linked to on the Link section of the Kymer Web site (http://webcontact.com/wa/links/). Be sure to visit Kymer Web also if you haven't already! See the "Kymer Web Services" section for information on getting your own homepage and advertising services. {!} - Duckolyte TriviaMaster - {!} by Brains, Wing Commander Duckolyte TriviaMaster finished off the week with a bang. Aurora Australis took honors in the First place position for the week finishing 3 points higher than all others. Earendil, Etheral Elf won sole position in second place, while Poison Belladonna took sole position of third place. Extra tie breaking questions were given to break the fourth place tie between Erik and Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing. Surprising as it may seem, Dark Sun did not come out on top. A newcomer, Erik, took the honors of fourth place. Winning fourth place would have wrapped up the monthly championship for Dark Sun. We are going to have to do a better job to insure U.S. facts are not tie breaker questions. Maybe German ones next time would be more appropriate. The following are the weekly results of September 1st: First Place: Aurora Australis Red Space Chest w/Faulter head painted rare Green w/body spray. Second Place: Earendil, Etheral Elf Heart Chest with Rosehead painted rare blue w/body spray. Third Place: Poison Belladonna Picnic Basket w/goodies including a Bag-O-Chips Head. Fourth Place: Erik Sack w/red valentine and flowers The monthly championship came down to tie breaking questions this month. Aurora Australis and Dark Sun answered a number of questions right. It finally came down to a question where whoever gave the number closest to the correct answer would win. Aurora came out on top as the Grand Champion for the month. Congratulations Aurora. Also, a special congratulations goes to Dark Sun as well, who would have won a Champion prize had there been two to give. The Monthly Grand Prize this month was a rare head specially engraved by Oracle Teresias. Monthly prizes went to the second, third, and fourth place finishers also. Second place selected a rare spitoon, while third place received a Snowman Head. Fourth place was given a rare colored Rosehead. The results are as follows: Aurora Australis 10 points (winner of tie breaker) Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing 10 points Sir Launce 4 points Earendil, Etheral Elf 3 points White Rabbit 2 points Unga Bunga, Duckolyte Wing 1 point LongWalk, Duckolyte Wing 1 point Duckolyte Larry Lamb 1 point Poison Belladonna 1 point Erik 1 point September 1st was included in the August results. The Monthly Champion is determined by weekly winners using the following point system: 1st Place = 5 Points 2nd Place = 3 Points 3rd Place = 2 Points 4th Place = 1 Point Great door prizes were given out this week making it well worth the wait to stay until the end. It is with great sadness that I take a rest from hosting for a while. I have turned over the responsibilities to Jimi, Duckolyte Senior Wing. He and other Duckolytes will take turns hosting the event. It will still be the same great game and rules, but different hosts every week to add some variety. From time to time, I may come back and host a game, but real world, combined with other personal reasons, has caused me to reprioritize time. The last six months of hosting this event has been fun. Duckolyte TriviaMaster is a multiple choice trivia game requiring no special software. Both PCs and MACs can play. It is held every week in the "Duck Hunt" turf starting promptly at 7:00p.m.WAT. Registration is required to play, but the game is free and sponsored by The Krewe of the Duckolytes. Come join the fun. {!} - Newbie Gras - {!} By Duckolyte Galador "Allon Bon Temps Roulez" "Let The Good Times Roll" Are you new? Want to have some fun, make friends, and just have some laughs? All readings would be through ESP if privacy is desired and your confidentiality is assured. I hope you'll give it a try and will find Tarot to be fun, informative, and insightful. To make an appointment for a specific time, either weekends any time or weeknights after 5 p.m. WAT, send me an e-mail with possible times and we will arrange it. Otherwise you can approach me in-world for an impromptu reading or to make a time for later. But please don't interrupt if I'm playing a game such as Worlds of Fortune (my favorite) or Kymer or such. If you ESP and I don't answer you right away, that's probably why. :) ================================================================= Turf for Rent Arch-Emperor Paul (London Lad) PI, 100612,3273 ================================================================= 1 Room Turf available for rent to Host Events. Submitting these listings is in addition to submitting event information to the Scheduling Group. Scheduling conflicts, if any, are resolved by the Scheduling Group. Changes to recurring events should be submitted to both the Scheduling Group and ESP! ESP! is available in the Newsstand Library of the WA Community Forum and thus earns no tokens to pay authors. Likewise, advertisements are no charge to the advertisers. Upon the availability of inworld documents and the sale of ESP! inworld, this policy will be reviewed and payments/advertisement rates will be adjusted accordingly. !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!} {!} - Writers' Guidelines for ESP! Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
