Welcome to our premier issue of TWIP (This Week In Phantasus). We are the gaming section magazine that was founded by Acolyte Brynne and ESP! This has been a very hectic time for the TWIP staff, trying to get everything set up to run smoothly and accurately placed for schedules and event information! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff, reporters, contributors and hosts for helping us in putting all the information and stories together! Without your help Jal and I would be lost! Thanks for taking the time, confirming your games and time slots for us. We are trying to get all the information on our schedule as problem free as possible. Jal and I would especially like to thank Acolyte Brynne, Arch-Emp Paul (London Lad) and Jadelin for all their help in making all this possible. We look forward to their continued support! The staff of ESP!'s TWIP hope you enjoy the set up we have created for all your gaming needs. You will find two ways of looking for information. We have set up the schedule as was previously set up, with date/time, however we have also set up a schedule with a little more detail under each sub-section. You will find all your Bingo and Kymer games in one place, while word games and trivia will be in another. There will also be sections for games of chance (ghost racing, roulette,etc.) and a separate place for auctions. So there will always be a quick place for that certain game you are looking for! Jal and I also hope you will enjoy our new "HOST SPOTLIGHT" feature. Each week we will have an interview with a host from your favorite games. Not only will this be main hosts, but your favorite co-hosts/hostesses and all our favorite creators. This week we have featured an article about one of all our dreamscape favorites,"Brains, Wing Commander". So read our feature and find out a little about the man behind the Duckie! So read on, enjoy and we hope you will let us know if you like our setup! We are always looking for new ideas and suggestions! So Good Luck to all of you in games and events "This Week In Phantasus"! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Feature Stories ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Host Spotlight - {!} Brains, Wing Commander With this being our first ever column on hosts, Jal and I decided that we would like to make the first one a real eye opener! One of the first names that came to our minds when we think about our favorite games, was "Brains, Wing Commander". Brains has always got a friendly word for everyone! Even when things go wrong at games, he keeps his cool, remains with composure and continues on. He is very fair to all his players and yet keeps complete control of his crowd, efficiently and exuberantly. All this found in one Duckie! Jal and I thought about some of the questions we would like to ask the hosts and put them together in an Email. True to form Brains returned his questionnaire very quickly and brought a lot of insight into the man behind that Duck character. We felt that there was no way to put any clearer a profile on Brains, than to just publish his answers as we received them. So here they are: Q: Tell us how long you have been in Worlds Away? A: 8 months Q: Tell us about your Newbie days/experiences. A: started as a Cat. Joined the Duckolytes in the beginning just for fun. The name Duckolyte was more of a spoof of the Acolyte name. We helped newbies but our main goal was to have fun. Eventually, we got organized and started to add structure to the group. The rest is history. Q: Tell us how you got started in hosting. A: Started hosting Kymer BINGO in the old days, also some occasional BlackJack. Later, I started Duckolyte Ghost Racing before moving onto TriviaMaster which has been going for 6 months now. Other games and events came later. Q: Tell us what it is like to be on the host side of things. A: Sometimes it can be fun, other times it is stressful and chaotic. Some events and games have more going on behind the scenes then others. Many people don't realize that you cannot talk while hosting events very easily. For example, in Trivia, once registration starts, I cannot talk at all while the program responds to everyone telling them they are in the game. Also, while playing trivia, once I select a question, I can not talk, the macro takes over. While I am running TriviaMaster, people arrive wanting to play, which requires registration throughout the game. Also, it requires answering questions and timing the question, so the timer is started at 15 seconds. The only real time I can talk at all is after the results are given and before the next question starts. Ghost racing was always the easiest to host once we went to turfs. But before turfs, we did it on the streets which caused all kinds of delays. When we moved it onto the Starway Stage, it helped some but not completely. I would say the Shell Games is the craziest game to host. This is being revised for the next one in August to make it easier for both hosts and players. Pinkie and the Brains is fun and fairly easy to host from my perspective. The other thing that people don't realize on hosting is the amount of time taken up preparation. Macros have to be built which take planning. Also, it takes quite a bit of time to organize prizes. In addition time is also take up with advertising and publishing the results in the papers. Q: Tell us about your likes/dislikes with Worlds Away. A: I always had a weakness for rare heads. It was my one weakness. I was trying to collect every head ever made to start a museum. What's the point of a museum if FSC recycles items back in all the time. The biggest dislike I have is with FSC putting rare items back into the vendos. Heads which I paid upwards of 60,000Ts are now common. It has made me lose much interest in WA as a result. As a result, you will see that I give away many of my rare items now. Many of the rest are given to auction houses, so they can bring entertainment to Kymer. I think FSC should spend their time putting new items in the vendos rather than recycling items. I have had rare items planned for events and have had to pull them because they became common again (garlic, etc). Another big issue, I dislike is the time it takes to pull holiday items (i.e. Valentine vendo in V-Mart). Unbelievable that Valentine stuff can still be in vendos going into August. I stocked up on some of these items, so I would have future prizes for games and events. Also, the way items are brought in-world disrupts the economy and puts it in a tailspin. Auction houses are big entertainment, and huge amounts of new items at once disrupt the economy. If items were gradually recycled in and out, it would make a difference. I love the interface for WA and have made some great friends here. The interface is highly addictive. Q: Tell us about what you see in your future with Worlds Away. A: Real World has been pulling on me lately which will result in me delegating responsibilities even more. Much of my time is spent with my in-world wife, and the rest with events. I hope to get more time shortly to spend in other ways as I had previously done. Q: Tell us some RW things about you. (Where you live, ETC.) A: I Live in Atlanta, GA. I work in the Information Services field in management. So you see, he is a very interesting person! We wanted to also get comments about Brains from a few people who deal with him on a regular basis. We figured you might like to see a few of them also! So here they are: We have further Emailed five hosts questionnaires. Clover was the second host to return her questionnaire and will be featured next week. We look forward to hearing from all our polled hosts and ask that any other hosts/hostesses, co-hosts/hostesses or creators of games, Email us and we will forward on to you a copy of our questionnaire, so that we can put the *HOST SPOTLIGHT* on you! {!} - Please Ease Up On The Hosts! - {!} By Sweet Suz Going to a lot of the inworld games is a real joy of ours (Jal & me); however, lately we have noticed that there are a few of our avatar friends who are giving the hosts a real hard time! The only thing that this is doing, is slowing down the game and this upsets everyone! We tried to think up some of the examples we have seen lately and here are a few: 1) At Bingos/Kymer please pay the host and then ghost right away. The host always will tell the avatars when to come down and you won't miss a single number! 2) At Trivia, ESP the host only with your answers, as they cannot speak to anyone during the questions anyway and this can cause problems with the macros! This slows down the games and eats up everyones money online! The hosts usually have a helper on the floor you can ESP, if this helper is to busy talk to anyone down on the floor, they can type your message to the host without interrupting his macros and then he can back scroll to your answer. No Problems!! Please remember that these people are not against you and for someone else! They are there to bring you a game to break up the monotony of just standing around and chatting. These games give us all an opportunity to win prizes and tokens. The hosts go to the trouble of setting things up for our sakes not their own. They may enjoy hosting the games, however there is a lot of work in getting one set up and running. Even the most dedicated and friendly hosts can take so much, then they are going to give up! Then where will we be? There are hosts in all the games with little rules, so lets all try to follow them and maybe we can have a better time at the games with less hassles. So please follow directions, ESP the person you are supposed to, ghost when you are supposed to, and be nice to your hosts!! Regards to all! {!} - Schedule Update - {!} By Jal With this Premiere of TWIP!, The schedule will now be found as a separate file. This will make your reading a little easier. We now have two schedule formats to offer you. In TWIP123B.TXT, you will find your schedule in Category format. In TWIP123C.TXT, you will find your schedule in Date/Time format. We hope that these changes will assist you in planning your recreational time. If you have any Questions/Comments/Concerns, please feel free to drop us a line. {!} - Sunday Trivia Update - {!} This is a Forum Message from the Duckolytes: Duckolyte TriviaMaster is canceled for August 4th. The host has prior obligations which can not be changed. Please join us on Sunday, August 11th, when we resume again at 7:00p.m.WAT in Duck Hunt. This is a Forum Message from Megret: MEGRET'S MADHOUSE will hold a one time only, FUN FERN TRIVIA game tomorrow (Sunday August 3rd) at 7 PM (19:00) WAT. Since Brains has canceled Duckolyte trivia, and so many of us missed 99% of the events on Fern Day, AND, since I spent about 6 hours researching ferns so I could *do* a "FUN FERN TRIVIA" on Fern Day. (Plus, of course, since I was given the prizes but couldn't get in to run the game...) Well, to make a long story short, here is another chance to win Ferns that ID as Commemorative. Along with my regular door prizes, and a Large Fern as the "Booby Prize." (For those that don't attend Trivia Challenge regularly, the "Booby prize" is awarded at the end of the game, to someone that has actually TRIED to answer most of the questions, but didn't make it into the top three, and didn't get a doorprize either.) It's still Trivia Challenge, but MUCH more trivial than usual. It's just a *little* Di-FERN-ent, more for giggles and grins than my usual CHALLENGE. {!} - Turf Of The Month - {!} By Charity Case The second monthly Turf of the Month Contest has officially come to a close! We have had the honors of seeing some very interesting turfs! Thank you to all of the contestants who've entered this months contest! The ballots have been cast and the votes have been tabulated! Our theme, dedicated to vacation season, is "Far Away Places," but if you've got something else you'd rather share, please do. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Just Ducky: Duckolyte Gaming Information ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Duckolyte TriviaMaster - {!} By Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects Sunday, July 28, proved to be an especially action-packed session of Duckolyte TriviaMaster as Brains, Wing Commander, hosted the first session of the game using the new timing rules. To defeat any possible advantage for players having two fast computers and a CD-ROM encyclopedia, the Duckolytes have decided to begin the countdown after only 15 seconds. In an attempt to keep sessions of Duckolyte TriviaMaster as close to one hour as possible, the game is now starting promptly at 7:00 p.m. WAT. Door prizes are now being given at the end of each session to reward tenacious players who stay until the end of the game. Following are the results of the July 28 game: 1st Place: Mufasa, who selected the Red Space Chest containing a rare-painted Lioness head and matching body paint. 2nd Place: Duckolyte Happy Trees, who selected the Picnic Basket containing picnic treats, including a Bag-O-Chips Head and rare pizza. 3rd Place: Ecological, won a rare-painted Rose Head painted rare with matching rare body spray. 4th Place: Sir Launce received a beautiful blue vase full of Kymer posies. All the titans of trivia were in such rare form that the Wing Commander had to run eight tie-breaker rounds to settle the tie for second place between Ecological and Duckolyte Happy Trees, and also to resolve the fourth place tie among Sweet Suz, Sir Launce, and Dark Sun. In addition to the winners of the week, Duckolyte TriviaMaster crowns a monthly Champion each month, based upon the outcome of each game during the month. Following is the point system used to determine the monthly Champion: 1st Place = 5 Points 2nd Place = 3 Points 3rd Place = 2 Points 4th Place = 1 Point The competition for the monthly prizes was also hotly contested, and Mufasa, in appropriately Olympic style, vaulted into second place for the month by having won the evening's game. Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing 13 points, won the Panther Head engraved as "Duckolyte Trivia Champ 7/97". Mufasa, 7 points, won the Frost Elf Head. Sir Launce, 5 points, won the Snowman Head. He was tied with Acolyte Hindemith for third place, but Acolyte Hindemith usually donates his prizes, so no tie-breaker was run. 5 door prizes were given out at the end of the game. Because the lucky Wing Commander had tickets for the Olympics Closing Ceremony, there was no Duckolyte TriviaMaster game on Sunday, August 4. This means that the competition for the monthly prizes for August will be both exciting and intense. Be sure to join Brains, Wing Commander, and the Krewe of Duckolytes on Sunday, August 11, at 7:00 p.m. WAT in the turf Duck Hunt. This game is fast and fun, and there is never an entry fee. We hope to see you there! {!} - Duckolyte Ghost Racing 7/28/96 - {!} By Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects July 28 was an especially exciting session of Duckolyte Ghost Racing. Because it was the last session for the month, the Panther head was to be won, and three avatars, Unga-Bunga, Davy Joe, and McDuck, were all tied for first place in the monthly standings. All were agog as Davy took care of business and got the first two wins to take an early lead. Unga, winning the 11th & 13th races, forced a race-off between hin & Davy Joe. In the race-off, Davy made a nice grab and took home the Championship Panther Head. MRS. SKY TOWER won the last Christmas in July prize, a Cute Elf head in race number nine. Others who were in hot contention during the month were: McDuck (6 wins), Ansuu (5 wins), Piemur (3 wins), and the following with two wins each: Shdow; Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing; Hotspot; Renegade, Duckolyte Sr. Wing; and MRS. Congratulations to all the Winners! {!} - 3RD Quick Draw Contest - {!} By Glyn 6 I held a "try it and see" demonstration contest on 27 July for those who were interested. The numbers attending have now grown to be quite respectable and as usual many people got rather trigger happy. At least the host survived this time! I have also now reached the stage where people are fighting for a chance to "shoot" others! It was most pleasing to see such numbers, and even a number of female avatars came an had a good time. The next full contest will be held on 10 August at 4pm WA time in the usual turf DEADWOOD. One of my avatars, Number 6, No 6, Glyn 6 or No Sex Please I'm British will host as usual. The contest is run on a knockout basis until there are only 2 avatars remaining for the final. The draw for the pairing is made randomly at the time. Each contestant type's BANG into the keyboard and when I call DRAW they hit the ENTER key as quickly as possible. Each round consists of 5 "draws" and the final is the best of 7. {!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!}{!} Event Listings for the Event Schedule cover the ESP!'s TWIP! publication period of Monday through Sunday. Submitting these listings to ESP!'s TWIP! is in addition to submitting event information to the Scheduling Group. Scheduling conflicts, if any, are resolved by the Scheduling Group. Changes to recurring events should be submitted to both the Scheduling Group and ESP!'s TWIP! ESP!'s TWIP! is available in the Newsstand Library of the WA Community Forum, as a subsidiary publication with ESP!,and thus earns no tokens to pay authors. Upon the availability of inworld documents and the sale of ESP! inworld, this policy will be reviewed and payments/advertisement rates will be adjusted accordingly. !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!} {!} - Writers' Guidelines for ESP!'s TWIP! Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP!'s TWIP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid-afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP!'s TWIP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP!'s TWIP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP!'s TWIP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP!'s TWIP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP!'s TWIP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP!'s TWIP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
