Cover Story ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Comments from Cosmocat - {!} Put a Fern in Your Pipe_head and Smoke It By Cosmocat So, this is to be forever remembered as the Earth, uhm, I mean, Island of Kymer-rattling week of our very first official Dreamscape-inspired holiday The Phantasus Fern Festival. I have to admit I really liked this idea when I first heard about it. Since real-world inspired holidays (like Easter) haven't gone off very well recently, I thought this would be FSC's big chance to do something right. I should have known better. Am I the only one with the bitter taste of ferns in my mouth? (And a nasty fern rash, too, but that's another story. ) How many of the thousands of citizens were actually able to squeeze inworld between server crashes? How many of you had fun finding stuff hidden among the foliage and attending fun events? ("Find the Fern_head vendo before it disappears" does *not* count as an event. ) How many of you had to explain to your boss that you *really* needed another day off, hoping that the second day of the festival would be better? And I wonder how many press releases were sent out for this event, and the apologies that followed: "These server crashes fortunately do not happen very often. Really. Just ask our customers." I could see the marketing hype that wriggled its way into the forum newsflash, too. New vendos! (9 *identical* items in one vendo!) New items! (Really *big* ferns!) and those new fern heads, which, being suspected of causing the crash, were promptly removed. But, I guess it wasn't a *total* loss--we did get to see *two* vendos in the same locale, and the streets of Kymer were once again bustling with activity. Hmm... maybe that was the whole point. If so, FSC *did* do something right. Until next time, Cosmocat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Feature Stories ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - How Cosmocat arrived in Kymer - {!} By Cosmocat I was named after the creek where I was born, in another Virtual Community in cyberspace. I lived for a time in a small house surrounded by trees near the creek. It was a quiet, yet boring life--no snacks (except stale potato chips), no small furry animals, and no one to talk to. And the roof kept disappearing from my home! One warm, autumn afternoon, as I was digging through the garbage pile that had mysteriously appeared one day in my yard, I found a tuna can. Oh, joy! It had not been opened, so I banged it against the post of my mailbox until the can split open, and I ate my first real meal. With my tummy full, I curled up under my favorite tree, and took a long nap .... I awoke upon the shores of a lush tropical island. There I met a magician named Prospero, who told me wild tales of the sea, and art, and magic and spirits. I was enchanted--I had never known such things existed! He also told me of a strange and mysterious island in the Sea of Io, where dreams could become reality and anything was possible. "Wouldst thou wish Kymer to see?" He asked. "Yes!" I said. Before I knew it, there was a flash of lightning and a blast of wind, and I found myself floating in a large tuna can out into the empty sea. The lull of the waves rocked me into yet another deep sleep. This time, when I awoke, it was in the cabin of a ship. I was in human form, with a most unfortunate head. I saw a talking parrot, and asked if he minded if I ate him for a snack, as I was quite hungry. "Of course you may eat me for a snack!" He squawked. Well, indeed, this is a strange place! I thought. I exited the cabin, and explored the area outside. The ship docked and I entered the Promenade where there was a body machine. I chose a plump, cat-like body, and went over to a head machine. "What, no cat head?! Well, I don't know about this place." I thought. I discovered I could remove the unfortunate head, and I placed it in my pocket. I would rather go headless than human. I left the dock and entered the city of Phantasus. Here I discovered many new things, met new friends, and even managed to receive a cat head as a gift! Oh, the joy of being able to meow again! I decided then and there that this was the place I wanted to be for as long as I can dream. {!} - Turf Contest Winner - {!} By Charity Case The second monthly Turf of the Month Contest has officially come to a close! Please join us! {!} - Common Solutions - {!} By Happy Little Trees Question: How do I play BINGO!? Solution: BINGO unanimously is the most popular of all betting games in KYMER. It seems nowadays you can find a BINGO game at any time at Harlequin Games. The number of hosts is growing rapidly, and many new users of Worlds Away are picking up the game. To play, you'll need a Bingo Card. I suggest Madra Rua's Bingo Card, available in the Worlds Away forum (GO AWAYFORUM), in the WorldsAway Plugins section, file name: BINGO1.EXE I find that it is the easiest to use, and the most practical for PC users. There are quite a few handy features, such as the AUTO button, which will allow you during the game to check if you missed a number, or if you perhaps had a call of nature. What makes this card so great is that it is for use with both Madra Rua's Bingo Caller, as well as Wert's KYMER Caller. Both games are similar, except that Wert's Kymer is setup so that instead of the letter line readings B I N G O, it reads K Y M E R. So all you have to do is ask the host which game they are playing, and select the game, using the GAME button. Now that you've got your bingo card all set up, you'll have to bet. Be sure to ask what the bet is before you bet. Once you know how much the bet is, you'll have to chose either to play for the full pot, or for half of it. Usually playing for half of the pot is usually half the bet of the full pot. I almost always bet for the full pot, because you never know if you'll win. A few times I bet for half, and I won; even though I won, I was mad at myself for not betting full. To BET, take your tokens out of your pocket. Then click on them, and select SPLIT. From that box, enter in the amount of tokens the bet is. If it's 110, then type in 110. Then you have to give the tokens to the host. To do this, click on the host and select GIVE TO. He should then confirm your bet, and then most likely, you should ghost. It is polite to bet and ghost, that is proper bingo etiquette, and it also helps move the game along quicker. After betting is closed and all registrations are received, then you may unghost. Speaking of bingo etiquette, another habit that you should get into is NOT to ESP the host, rather, ESP the helper or another avatar. Soon the host will ask for registrations, simply type in the name of the bingo caller in the space indicated, and click on register. A line or garbled numbers will be sent to the host. Do not be confused, the bingo caller's program will be able to read this string. Then after all betting is closed, and all registrations are received, the host will call what the game is, 1 line, 2 lines, X, Blackout etc. Then the host will state a few rules, and will begin calling numbers. If you get Bingo, then click on the BINGO!! If you were correct, then YOU WIN!! If you made a mistake, then the host will continue. You will keep playing until a correct call is made. Perhaps the host (like I do) will continue calling for a second place, for a free game! That should pretty much cover everything. Hopefully you'll win a game, and not spend it all in the same day on bingo =). Good Luck!! We have three of them, you know: Oracle Vaserius, Oracle Teresias and Oracle Uni. They work very hard keeping the city running for all of us to enjoy and most of us never get to talk with them. Imagine one day that you were strolling around the fountains and suddenly there was Oracle Teresias and no one else was about. The two of you exchange bows and greetings and he asks you if you have any questions you'd like to ask. What would you say? I am looking for interesting questions to ask the Oracles for an interview to be published later in ESP! Below are a few of the already suggested ones to get you in the spirit. How old is Oracle Teresias? Is Teresias your first or last name and what does it mean? Are Oracles human? Is there any significance in the three different colored robes the Oracles wear? What is your favorite activity? What is written in that book you carry? Are the Oracles related? What is in those roped off rooms in the temple? If you have a question you are burning to ask an Oracle, please e-mail it to me (74237,151). The best questions will be submitted (with credit to their authors) and answered in a later ESP! issue. {!} - Tarot Majik - Unraveling the Knots - {!} Did Hannah abandon her friends? by Hierophant SRK. facilitator of the Majik Guild "Phred. I had so much fun in Dreamscape last night. I recited my own poem at a poetry meeting.," Hannah said, jumping up and down with excitement. Phred was surprised. "I didn't know you were a poet, Hannah." "I didn't know either, Phred. My new friends in the Poetry and Storytelling Guild convinced me to give it a try." "That's exciting. Can I hear something you've written?" "I'm glad you asked. I just happen to have one of my original works with me," she grinned. "Every time I try, My thoughts begin to fly. Don't ask me why. Just reach up to the sky. The stars will fill your eye." "That's beautiful Hannah. You're turning into a real Dreamer. I bet if your old friends from Waking World heard you reciting your own poems in Dreamscape they'd be amazed." "Don't remind me," Hannah moaned. "I'm having a problem with my Waking World friends. One of them called me the other day and complained that I'd missed a good party. I met him and all he wanted to talk about was why wasn't I there when he needed me." "Well, why weren't you there?" "Oh, Phred. That's one of the main reasons I'm in Dreamscape. My old friends just want to party their brains out and I'm sick of it. Nobody wants to dream in Waking World. My old friends would think I was crazy if I recited a poem." "That's so sad Hannah. But I'm afraid it's a common problem. The force of gravity is so strong there. Everything is so heavy people can't even ghost! If only they knew about Dreamscape!" "I've tried to tell them, but they don't get it. They think I'm nuts to spend so much time on my computer. In fact, they think anything that's different is nuts. I feel like they are weighing each other down instead of trying to lift each other up. I hate to leave them, but this new world is so important to me. Oh, Phred. I feel so guilty," Hannah said with a look of terrible sorrow on her face. "Guilty? Hannah, it's not like you've left them out in the ocean without a life raft. They are doing what they want to do." "I wish I had a good perspective on this, Phred. It's gnawing away at me. Maybe we could do a Tarot reading." "Sure, Hannah. What do you suppose the question would be?" "Well, something like: Is it okay to walk away from my friends?" "You're being too hard on yourself, Hannah. Your question makes you sound like you're a villain. A gentler question would make a better reading. What do you think about: How can I love my friends, even when I no longer take part in what they are doing?" "Okay. I like the way you put that. Let's try it." After they carefully selected the cards and laid out the reading, Phred said, "This is a sweet, gentle reading." Hannah pointed to a card which showed three Swords piercing a heart. "I don't know Phred. That card doesn't look very sweet to me." "The three of Sword looks painful. But even though it hurts, longing for love can be sweet. Speaking of Love, there's the Lovers card." "Cool. Maybe I'll meet the man of my dreams," Hannah sighed. "Maybe, Hannah. The picture of a man and woman in love is symbolic of that deep love we all want. But you can get sparks of deep passionate love in an instant when you admire a teacher, or speak kindly to an old friend. That's love hidden amidst the moments of our lives." "Interesting," Hannah said. "So the Tarot is using the Lovers card to help me understand my relationship with my friends." "Yes, Hannah. In every situation, the more love flows, the deeper is our trust and honor of each other. Love is the solution to almost every problem." "I'm anxious to hear how I should apply the Lovers card to my question. Oh, and look at that beautiful card. A beautiful woman is pouring water from a pitcher into a pond. There's something graceful and peaceful about that image." "Yes, the Star card is beautiful. It's a card of real awakening." "Look at all those big stars in the sky behind her!", Hannah said, with amazement. She looked at Phred and they both burst out laughing. "Yes, Hannah. The Tarot heard your poem! Those stars certainly fill your eye," Phred said, laughing. "Now let's start from the beginning. The card in the 'question' position is the six of Cups." "The image is haunting. A little child is handing a cup to another child. Those little children and that little gingerbread house are so cute I want to curl up into a little tiny person and jump into the picture." "The innocence of childhood haunts us all, Hannah. When things aren't going our way, we sometimes think that we can regain that innocence by returning to the past. This card represents memories, that nostalgic feeling that we are missing something, and could get it again if only we could turn back time." "That's perfect. That's one of the things that's troubling me. I'm here in the present, and at the same time I'm trying to stay in the past." "The six of Cups isn't a bad card. I'm sure you've had happy joyful times with your friends. Sometimes remembered innocence can be uplifting, and helpful in the present. The next card is the eight of Swords. It shows a blindfolded woman trapped behind the swords of her own ideas and patterns. She can't see the castle up on the hill behind her because she is trapped in her own feelings. When you feel stuck in a situation it's often your own limited vision that prevents you from moving forward. In your case, the trap is feeling that you ought to confine yourself in order to please your friends." "Ugh. She really does look stuck and uncomfortable. I don't want to be in that position." "Fortunately, by dreaming, you're starting to transcend this self imprisonment. This card is in the position that 'opposes or supports' your question. The Tarot is showing you that you have to choose between freedom and confinement." He continued, "The next card is the Lovers card, which represents selfless love. Notice that the two people in the card are in love, but they are not locked in each other's gaze. They are both aware of the guiding presence of the angelic figure above them. It shows that true Lovers place the needs of the other person above their own. And to guide their loving service to each other, they follow a higher light." "Selfless love?" Hannah moaned with a confused look on her brow. "If I love my friends, I should be going along with anything they want." "That's not necessarily true. Do you honestly feel the best way to help them is to party with them?" "Well. No. They all sit around wishing they were someone else, or somewhere else. When I'm with them, that's the way I am too. It's true. I don't see how that would help." "The Lovers card shows people pulling each other up towards more awareness rather than trapping each other. One of the best things you could do for your friends is to find something that fulfills your own creative dreams. By coming to Dreamscape, you're in a position to lead them to the castle of their own Dreams. So, yes, I think following your Dreams is loving and helpful, even though they don't see it that way." "But it's so difficult. How can I know what to do when I'm pulled in so many ways?" "It is terribly difficult. And after you've tried to think it through, and are still confused, you realize that thinking isn't always the best tool for steering through these situations. You have to look beneath the surface. When you have awakened your inner awareness, your own dreams will guide you like stars in the night sky. And that's the next card, the Star, which is about developing your ability to connect with your dreams." "Do you mean my dreams when I'm asleep, or the dream of being in Dreamscape?" Hannah asked, looking a bit confused. "A dream is a dream, and all dreams have so much power to lift and guide us. But we have a big advantage here in Dreamscape because here we dream while we're awake. And being awake, our Dreams are easier to understand." Hannah thought for a moment and said, "Ahh. Dreamers understanding their dreams. It's such a sweet gentle image it makes me want to stay here forever." "Perhaps someday you shall, Hannah. When you learn how real your dreams are, you'll be able to see them everywhere. The next card, the six of Ankhs, is also about inner growth or an inner journey. By coming to Dreamscape you've started on a journey to a new place within yourself. The six of Ankhs is very closely related to the Star card." "Could you explain the difference between these two cards? Are they both about inner growth and being in touch with my inner dreams?" "Sometimes two cards relate to the same idea. But every card makes a special contribution to the reading. In this reading, the Star is like a gift to you, the opportunity to open your inner eyes. The six of Ankhs is you taking that gift and working with it to go deeper within yourself." "A journey within myself. That's a very powerful image," Hannah said. "It does feel like a journey. Like going on a trip, and missing my old friends. But the adventure seems so important to me now. Now that I'm involved in this journey, I can't imagine going back. It's like an exploration." "Yes, Hannah. You don't want to feel trapped. You are learning how to spread your wings and fly. Anytime you are able to lift up to a new awareness, you help others in Majikal ways." "And," he continued, "in the 'hopes and fears' position is the eight of Ankhs. The eight of Ankhs is the card of persecution, that others are giving you a hard time for your choices and behavior. Well, that's certainly a fear, and very much what we're trying to understand in this reading. The Tarot is just affirming that you are concerned about their bad opinion of you." "Now let's go on to the top of the reading, to the section which talks about the outcome. In the 'crown' position is the ten of Pentacles. In the Tarot's numerology, the nine represents completeness and fulfillment. Adding one more to it is ten, which is 'one too many', like an overflowing. Ten represents a cycle which has run its course and is ready to roll over into the next stage. The ten of Pentacles, shows a picture of worldly success. A family is standing in a lavish castle scene. They have it all, but it's not enough. It's time to look for more." "Well, I don't have it all! But I see what you mean. My life seems like it should be satisfying. I've got all these friends. They really are good people. But somehow it's not enough." "Yes. The ten of Pentacles means you're ready for more, and the next card, the three of Swords, is the pain and longing that compels you to leave the familiar and move into a new world. This reading is interesting, because it's about two worlds. You are leaving one world to come to another. The pain of looking for love pushed you into Dreamscape. And now that you're here, you are feeling the pain of separation from your old friends. Since you can't be in both worlds at the same time, you feel separated from one when you are in the other." "Ouch. That hurts when I think about it. The pain of separation. Yes that fits the way I'm feeling these days. Ooh. That's funny. When I think about it just right," Hannah said with her eyes squeezed shut in concentration, "I can see how that pain of missing my friends while I'm in here is kind of sweet. It's almost like being with them, even while we're apart." When she opened her eyes, she said, "Darn. The next card is that sneaky looking seven of Swords. That's deception, isn't it? I don't feel like anyone is actually deceiving me," Hannah said. "It's not about a particular person deceiving you. A lot of times, this card represents self-deception. All too often, your own mind will try to convince you that doing something is okay, even when it goes against your own deep judgment. In this case, the deception is your friends trying to convince each other and themselves that partying is fun, even while they are feeling trapped by it. Such self-deception prevents them from seeing the way out of their confinement." "That's a yucky final outcome. What about the 'insight' cards. Maybe they'll give a happier ending." "The Tarot is not showing you the seven of Swords to be depressing, Hannah. Awareness is a powerful tool for joy. You have to know what you're doing in order to do it well. But, you're right. The insight cards are fun. The Ace of Cups is a new beginning. The Cup suit represents love. The Tarot wants you to see that the new friendships you are making in Dreamscape are just as important, and just as real as the bittersweet sorrow of your other friendships. I don't mean to discount the connection you feel with your old friends. But the Tarot is pointing out that you should appreciate the new as well as the old." He continued, "The other 'insight' card is the Page of Ankhs. The Page cards in each suit represent a fresh, vigorous, youthful energy. The Page of Ankhs represents the inner learning and growing that you are so enthusiastic about here in Dreamscape." "There's that inner learning again. That's the third card in this reading that talks about inner learning," Hannah said. "Yes, and each card has its own feeling. The Page of Ankhs is about the personal energy of trying and learning. You don't have to be young in years to have that energy. You can discover that attitude of enthusiasm and receptivity at any age. The Star represents a more universal image. The universe is reaching towards you, calling to you to awaken. And the six of Ankhs is an inner journey. It's all part of the bigger journey of life." "Life does seem like a journey at times. And now that I've entered the new world of Dreamscape, the journey has extended beyond anything that I would have imagined. Having gone this far, it's sometimes hard to bridge the gap between the two worlds," Hannah sighed. "Like any journey, Hannah, not everyone goes with you. But that doesn't mean you've abandoned your friends. You're on the frontier scouting out a new world for them." {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy Cleansing --------- When working magic, your mental and emotional spaces are as important as your physical space. Perhaps you cannot at first recognize these parts of yourself as readily, but with a bit of practice you will start seeing them as tangible factors to be kept clean and tidy, to be suited and arranged to your best purpose. What you are looking for as an ideal inner space for magic is a sense of unexcited collectedness. You need to be present where you are and with what you are doing, but calm and without expectations. It is possible that finding such space could prove at first a difficult task. Nobody can show you what is right as it changes from person to person, and to begin with, you are likely to be expectant, maybe anxious or even afraid. Cleansing yourself is therefore of the utmost importance, both in the body and in the mind. Cleansing has been part of religious and magical practices since the beginning of time. It is sufficient to think of the Christian Baptism, where the postulant is immersed in water before receiving the blessing of God. Through cleansing you wash away all stresses and tensions which you have accumulated in your normal activities. You can think of those tensions as a crust which covers your inner being and hides the true voice. As magic operates from that inner space you see how necessary it is to be cleansed and free to expose yourself. A Cleansing Method ------------------ This is a good general cleansing method that can be used before any magic session. Run a shower and as you let the cool water (never hot) wash over you, stay still under the jet and feel the contact of the water with your skin. Imagine your emotions: all sadness, anger, frustration, but also excitement, lust, whatever you feel; imagine it to be on the surface of your skin. If you feel angry see the skin of your body covered with the associated color and see the drops of water washing away the color. Remain under the water until the color has all gone. It might take a while; the color might change into a different one - just visualize the water dissolving it, as if your skin was painted with the water colors; see the colored water go down the plug. Breathe deep and steadily into your belly while you are doing this. Let your breath stay normal, though, and don't force it. You are not looking at this moment for any kind of releasing of old emotions but rather for a steady settling of your energy, for a sense of balance. When you feel soft and clear, and relaxed, dry yourself and put on the special clothes which you keep aside for magic. Clothing -------- Clothes are in direct contact with your skin - your pores breathe them constantly and they are the most direct expansion of your physical state. You should always pay close attention to what you wear - specially when you are performing magic, as those activities heighten your awareness and you would be uncomfortably conscious of anything which might be hindering you. The material should be natural - such as cotton, wool, or silk. Stay away from man-made fabrics. These do not breathe with you, do not answer to the change in your body temperature and, what is more important, can become barriers to the energy you are trying to free from your body to perform incantations. I choose plain colors, with no patterns, as I find them less distracting, but that is a matter of personal comfort. Some favor dark colors such as navy blue, black or dark purple while others prefer pure white or other light colors. Traditional witches' covens have their own rules about this, but as we are not here involved with covens, hierarchies and structures, I would advise a small selection of different-colored simple, loose clothes. Every time choose the color which most suits the mood and the need of the day. Concentrating ------------- Once you are cleansed and clothed, sit comfortably with your eyes shut and closely observe your mental and emotional space. Look at your thoughts for a few minutes without interfering with the metal process. Notice what your predominant mood is and just let yourself be that way. Relax your body, specially if you feel any tension anywhere. Follow the flow of your breath without changing it, then gently put aside any feelings or thoughts which might be happening and simply be silent. This may sound a lot easier than it actually is, and you shouldn't worry about just how calm you manage to be. Those who are familiar with meditation will find themselves here on familiar ground, and in truth retracing one's own steps to the clear source of the "Making" is what all religions and teachings, all meditations and techniques are about. When you reach this calm, collected space you will feel all your emotions, all your thoughts, and all your energies, simply lying there patiently waiting to be summoned. You can then direct them at a target like an archer directs his arrow. It is a readiness and a complete mastery of your own - it starts at a very superficial level, but it deepens every time and with it deepens your magical power. This special power isn't the power of the world, but a more enriching power. The Room -------- Once you have built your confidence and you know what you are doing and what results you are looking for, you can do magic anywhere. However, at the beginning of your "learning process", the physical area as well as your mental and emotional space are to be carefully cherished. Concentration is the single most important item which can determine your success and so you must do everything you can to acquire it. It should be obvious that you cannot easily concentrate on your magic while sitting in a living room full of people and smoke, in front of a tv, munching peanuts and chips. The best area would be one where you are cut off from your normal activities. It would be ideal, of course, to set aside a room to be used solely for the purpose of making magic. If your bedroom is your own and you don't use it for watching tv or having parties of friends it is a good place to use. But in any case you do need a space where you can be alone for a while every day, a space that you can arrange as you wish - somewhere without disturbance. Trying to perform magic in a place which is often in use will cause problems and make the magic less successful because the different vibrations from other people will linger in the atmosphere. You would then need to speed a lot of time and energy re-setting the balance in that place. Your objective is to create an atmosphere of serene concentration. Anything that disturbs you, for whatever reason, has to be removed. If you, have a photo of someone close to you on the bedroom table, and every time your eyes fall on it you feel a twinge of discomfort, or excitement, you need to remove it. It could be that the emotional situation between you and your loved one is heavily charged. Perhaps you feel in your heart that he or she disapproves of your activities. Look around and consider every object with this in mind. If it is disturbing to your peace, remove it. In the same way, and if you do have the possibility, paint the walls the color most centering for you and lay down a carpet (possibly of a natural fiber) of the same shade. It is best if walls, ceiling and floor are of the same color - that is, of course, if you are using that space only for magic. The continuity of the color will improve your capacity for concentration. A good color for this purpose is usually pale blue, as it is relaxing and soothing. Lighting -------- It doesn't really matter whether your space is well lit or not; your own sense of serenity is all that counts. Much of the work inside is going to be done in candle light. Orientation ----------- It is quite important to determine with a compass how your magic place relates to the four cardinal points. During your work you will be either standing or sitting facing east. The east is the direction of the sunrise and the light; its color is white. Facing east strengthens the power and gives a boost of vitality and freshness. Furniture --------- Some like to surround themselves with objects and pictures that remind them of magic while others favor simplicity and a spartan environment where only those items that are strictly necessary are permitted. It is a matter of your own preference; just follow your own feelings. Whatever can help you concentrate, whatever can still your mind and make you feel calm and settled, that is what you need. The two things you will need to have in your magic space are: a place to sit - this can be a comfortable cushion on the floor or a sofa or an armchair, whatever is best for you; and a place to work - a surface on which it is possible to write and to put things. This latter surface can be a simple wooden tablet which you can lay on the floor, if that is what you like. Or it can be a small table, or even the top of a chest. The important thing is that you take great care with your surface: you need to put it away safely every time, if you use it only for magic. If at other times you use it for other activities, you need to make sure to thoroughly cleanse it before magic, re-consecrating it every time. The above arrangements are, of course, ideal. It may not always be possible in every individual situation to accomplish the luxury of a perfect, private place for magic. Life is busy, space is limited and people often overwhelm our time and space. This does not mean, however, that making your magic is impossible. It may mean that you need to make a greater effort to get started but very often this increased energy can actually have a beneficial result - so don't despair. Blessed * Be !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Kymer-conomics ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Kymer-conomics! - {!} by Mufasa, Financial Editor July Auction Final ------------------ This week's auction scene was more interesting than it has been in weeks. Although the prices for some rare heads remained depressed, rare-painted rose heads began an upward swing, probably resulting from loss of the paint patch. Baby bears, newly-rare food items, and lacy heart heads were slightly upward overall. Flowers, snowballs, and ferns remained in a deep trough. Accompanying this column are four .gifs containing a summary of auction prices during July. Depending upon one's interpretation, Kymerians either bought a whole lot of nothing, or there was much of nothing available to buy . In order to avoid over- whelming readers with sheer quantity of information and to keep the font a reasonable size, detail is only provided when it is relevant. When averaging the prices of rose heads over 30 sales for the month, color is less significant than when comparing items which were sold at auction only three or four times during the month. As always, we welcome your feedback. Let us know how the column and the charts can be made more useful for you! Following is the list of .gifs: JULFIN1.GIF Decorations JULFIN2.GIF Containers and food JULFIN3.GIF Heads and paints JULFIN4.GIF Snowballs, teddies, and valentines. Street Trade Spotlight ---------------------- With few exceptions, auctions and retail outlets are sources of the nominally-rare, the barely-rare, and the medium-rare. For those exceptionally toothsome rarities, it is usually necessarily to approach a street trader, most of whom are awash in rarities, and some of whom provide a search service. Following, in no particular order, are some of the traders that stalkers of specialties might consult when looking for that perfect head or item. 1) Clover: If she doesn't have it in stock, she will go out of her way to locate the head or item for you. As the proprietress of Kymer's oldest auction house, Clover knows that some items will never appear at public auction. One of the longest-standing residents of Kymer, Clover also know who has what, has gilt-edged connections, and is universally trusted. 2) LeadMan: LeadMan and his inworld wife, Little Princess, are always out and about, buying, selling, and trading. As a Euro-avatar, LeadMan has deep roots in the German community, and extensive connections in Kymer. If he says he can get a head or item for you, he can and will. If he says he can't, then the head or item is probably unavailable. 3) Swifty: If you want that special rarity, but you have narrow price parameters or time constraints, such as an approaching wedding or anniversary, this is the avatar to see. Whenever Swifty is inworld, Swifty is hard at work. Often approached by long-time or wealthy avatars to find buyers for a rare head or item, Swifty may already have what you are looking for. In recent weeks, Swifty has marketed items like those hard-to-find specs and an ultra-rare fly head. 4) L'il Angel: She is such an avid collector that she recently opened a store to dispose of the overflow. You will find l'il angel at almost every auction and at any locale in which the traders are gathered. Like LeadMan, l'il angel also has extensive connections within the community of Euro-avatars. 5) Brains: More of a connoisseur and collector than a trader, Brains nevertheless knows who has what item or items for sale. A long-time avatar, he knows almost every avatar in Kymer. Because of his Duckolyte responsibilities, his time inworld is at a premium, and he usually assists Duckolytes and long-time friends when he participates in trades to which he is not a party. If you are a Duckolyte, a friend of the Duckolytes, or a personal friend, Brains will go out of his way to help, but give him plenty of lead time. 6) Darkhorse: He is a successful and savvy trader, who has extensive connections, but a somewhat lower profile than the other traders. He is more likely to be interested in trading items that he already owns than in searching out a special head or item, and is more interested in directly participating in trades than in facilitating trades between third parties. 7) Oceanfront: Like Darkhorse, she seems to be more interested in directly participating in trades than she is in facilitating them. However, Oceanfront is very likely to know who has rare items or special heads that he or she might be willing to sell for the right price. Definitely ask Oceanfront if you are in the market for that special something. If she doesn't have it, she can point you in the right direction and give you expert advice on what to offer in trade, or how much you can expect to pay in Kymer coin. If you're not on this list and you're a street trader, watch this column in future weeks for your name. If you don't see it, shoot an Email to Kymer-conomics! at UID 104453,2565. We want to hear from you! Tantalizing Tidbits ------------------- We've all heard the rumors that FSC plans to pull the plug on the noble experiment called WorldsAway after WebWorlds comes online. Some believe the rumblings and are leaving Kymer for other virtual communities. Others are electing to quietly stand pat pending pronouncements of an official nature. For what it may be worth, our sources stoutly aver that Fujitsu originally planned to receive revenue of $4 per hour for use of the service and conducted its costing accordingly. When CIS lowered its overall pricing structure to $2 per hour, FCT, now FSC, found itself in a deep fiscal pit. Many of us have been puzzled by all the talk of severely-limited resources, given that Fujitsu, parent corporation of FSC, is one of the richest and most successful multinationals on the planet. The contract with CIS is up for renewal on September 15. Options are: renew the contract as is and keep WorldsAway up and running on CIS for another year, renew the contract, then breach it at the propitious moment because FSC is already in reorganization proceedings and could not be seriously hurt, negotiate a month-to-month contract, scramble to get WebWorlds online and pull the plug on WorldsAway. Placing her head on the block in typical and time-honored fashion, the Econo-Lion hypothesizes that the present intention of the FSC corporados is to kill WorldsAway on CIS, but that they will be unable to do so by September 15. December 31 seems more realistic, given FSC's chronic inability to meet schedules. However, we do believe that WorldsAway's days are numbered on CompuServe. What else would explain the unwillingness to upgrade the server, the need to provide new software resources before the old ones have been thoroughly debugged, and the failure to open any new locales for the last three months? Now, what if we are wrong and merely giving life to an odious and baseless rumor ? Well, we've been wrong before, we'll be wrong again, but our sources are very positive and have named names. At any rate, it sure is interesting. Stay tuned. Next week: Beginning auction prices for August, more scoops on street-traders, and a tantalizing tidbit or two. You could be next month's big winner! {!} - Duckolyte TriviaMaster - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects Sunday, July 28, proved to be an especially action-packed session of Duckolyte TriviaMaster as Brains, Wing Commander, hosted the first session of the game using the new timing rules. To defeat any possible advantage for players having two fast computers and a CD-ROM encyclopedia, the Duckolytes have decided to begin the countdown after only 15 seconds. In an attempt to keep sessions of Duckolyte TriviaMaster as close to one hour as possible, the game is now starting promptly at 7:00 p.m. WAT. Door prizes are now being given at the end of each session to reward tenacious players who stay until the end of the game. Following are the results of the July 28 game: 1st Place: Mufasa, who selected the Red Space Chest containing a rare-painted Lioness head and matching body paint. 2nd Place: Duckolyte Happy Trees, who selected the Picnic Basket containing picnic treats, including a Bag-O-Chips Head and rare pizza. 3rd Place: Ecological, won a rare-painted Rose Head painted rare with matching rare body spray. 4th Place: Sir Launce received a beautiful blue vase full of Kymer posies. All the titans of trivia were in such rare form that the Wing Commander had to run eight tie-breaker rounds to settle the tie for second place between Ecological and Duckolyte Happy Trees, and also to resolve the fourth place tie among Sweet Suz, Sir Launce, and Dark Sun. In addition to the winners of the week, Duckolyte TriviaMaster crowns a monthly Champion each month, based upon the outcome of each game during the month. Following is the point system used to determine the monthly Champion: 1st Place = 5 Points 2nd Place = 3 Points 3rd Place = 2 Points 4th Place = 1 Point The competition for the monthly prizes was also hotly contested, and Mufasa, in appropriately Olympic style, vaulted into second place for the month by having won the evening's game. Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing 13 points, won the Panther Head engraved as "Duckolyte Trivia Champ 7/97". Mufasa, 7 points, won the Frost Elf Head. Sir Launce, 5 points, won the Snowman Head. He was tied with Acolyte Hindemith for third place, but Acolyte Hindemith usually donates his prizes, so no tie-breaker was run. 5 door prizes were given out at the end of the game. Because the lucky Wing Commander had tickets for the Olympics Closing Ceremony, there was no Duckolyte TriviaMaster game on Sunday, August 4. This means that the competition for the monthly prizes for August will be both exciting and intense. Be sure to join Brains, Wing Commander, and the Krewe of Duckolytes on Sunday, August 11, at 7:00 p.m. WAT in the turf Duck Hunt. This game is fast and fun, and there is never an entry fee. For those of you still not familiar with the 90-day rule, it was announced repeatedly in the forum, if you do not access your WorldsAway avatar for 90 days, the server sets this avatar for deletion. The next time the server goes down by however means, the physical deletion from the database occurs. No one with FSC can help you get your name or possessions back. Once it is deleted, its gone! So here was a wonderful opportunity for the Sunray Knights of Kymer's VoCC (Victims of Crimes and Crashes) Fund to go into action. You see this lady is a teacher. As a reward for her eighth grade students doing their work and finishing early, she allows them to use her avatar (under close scrutiny) to discover and enjoy the world of online communication. She tells me her students are very fascinated with it and many do not have home computers. Some are just now beginning to experience online services at home. None of the students has a WorldsAway avatar at home. As she was telling me this I could hear the wheels clicking in the young minds of the students and knew this was a truly an eye-opening experience for them. I just had to help them out. So I am proud to announce that the VoCC fund reimbursed the teacher with 3000 tokens to help her buy back some basic items such as a turf and a chest and incidentals. The VoCC fund is supported by the Sunray Auction each Friday night at 5:00 pm WAT in the turf "Sunray Auction." {!} - The Bridges and Other Kingdoms Guild - {!} "A Vision of Unity" by SunRay Fawn Conceived by Acolyte Sunray Indigo, the guild will dedicate its activities toward improving harmony and understanding throughout the Dreamscape. To do this, the guild will create channels for communication within the Sunray Knights of Kymer and across the Council of 12 guilds, between the Sunray Knights of Kymer and the other 'Helper' groups, and from the Dreamscape reaching to other Cyberspace communities. One of the immediate goals of this guild is to improve and facilitate communication between avatars who speak in different languages. Through a service conceived by one of our French speaking members which we will call "Communication Problem Solvers," members will be on duty at certain times of the day to translate and unravel miscommunication between English and Non-English Speaking avatars. This service touches lightly upon the Guild's larger vision to establish a United Nations in Kymer where all groups and languages can meet and discuss their ideas. The future holds many possibilities for us. By sponsoring Inter-Group events, communication through social fun can develop new and common goals between different interest groups. As Indigo explained from the beginning, in the early stages of every civilization, the biggest thrust is in the establishment of special interest groups. That is a sign of health since people can build a higher purpose through their group identity. In the more advanced stages, which we are entering, these groups work to harmonize their goals, reaching out to one another to benefit from the differences. Social groups never have to become a reason for conflict or separation. These are all fundamental SunRay beliefs. Finally, through Inter-Guild and Inter-Group activities, we can build the foundation for an even larger bridge across the great frontier of Cyberspace. Once we learn the ways of harmony and creativity in Kymer, we can carry the wisdom of this experience inside us, wherever we go. Wherever they are waiting for the Light in Cyberspace or the Waking World. Pal Joey and Sunray Ann are the main facilitators of this Guild. I join them as a "Helper" to welcome any Sunray Knight, whether a Seeker or already Knighted to join our efforts and bring us your gifts of communication. Our meetings are on every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. WAT. We have set this time to accommodate our European friends. If you are interested, come to a meeting. {!} - The Poetry and Story Telling Guild - {!} by Sunray Kethrey Scheherazade is asking the Storytellers of our guild to help her "tell" the full story called "Truth" -- at least as she tells it, for there are many ways to modify the story -- on Saturday August 17th beginning promptly at 6 PM- 7 PM, and would like to use our guildhall as the locale. It will require a minimum of two males, and one female, plus some "special effects" people. Teaching the difference between telling a story and writing a story is her gift to the guild. The story itself is her gift to those who come. She is looking for people that can attend three rehearsals, on Thursday August 15th & Friday August 16th at 7 PM, as well as the event itself. Rehearsals may be longer than the event itself, as others add their own ideas and personalities to their roles. Anyone wishing to help (including the special effects people) MUST be available for all three times. Guild members interested in working with a professional storyteller in the waking world, as she translates her art into the virtual world, AND are available at those times, are asked to contact either of the guild facilitators, Sunray Kethrey and Megret, SrK. The Poetry and Storytelling Guild would like to thank Baby Blue Eyes, Usagi, Yumi, Gil Galhad, Mufasa, Rajah, Max-Miller, Branwyn and Namenloser for attending last Wednesday's Poetry Pantry event. Special awards such as Rose heads, ferns, valentines and flowers were given out to these incredibly talented readers. We would also like to thank all the wonderful readers who came to share with us on Wednesday July 31. Max Thorn Knight, Sean, Baby Blue Eyes, Thunder Fire, Usagi, SunRay Blue Skies and Happy Little Tree. We are so happy to see all of your warm friendly faces every week, and we sincerely hope others who drop by just to listen will warm up to the idea of reading and sharing with all of us. If you're nervous and not to sure you're ready to recite poetry in public that's ok we've all been there. But, if you're feeling brave and would like to give it a try we believe it becomes easier each time you do it. So take a chance and stop by some Wednesday and join in the fun! SPECIAL NOTE: If any of you have some time and would like to help us advertise for any future events we could really use your help recruiting our fellow avatars inworld to join us for our scheduled poetry events. I have found by creating a simple macro explaining the details of the event such as main theme, date, time, place, and awards and then advertising on the streets of Kymer a couple hours before the event is scheduled to begin can really help - even an hour before. Most often many of our fellow avatars don't know about these events because they're not in the habit of reading the paper or visiting the forum. This form of advertising will help make others aware inworld that these special readings take place and that we welcome all to come and read or listen. Please let me know if you would like to articipate in this way for any future event. After a slow start, the bidding picked up and made the auction successful! Because of low attendance and everyone "splurging" on ferns this week, some really fantastic bargains were picked up. We discussed ideas for an Art Contest open to all citizens of the Dreamscape. What kind of art would be allowed, what and where would the entries be viewed, and where would be the ultimate viewing places for the winning entries. Many of the ideas were very exciting. If you would like to become active in this guild, regular meetings will now be held on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. WAT in the "Arts and Music Guildhall." Please join us for what may prove to have the most impact on the Dreamscape from the Sunray Knights of Kymer. NOTE: Music members can split out and form their own guild if there is enough interest. I have some ideas to share about music in the Dreamscape. {!} - More Sunray Updates - {!} by SunRay Render Auctions: If anyone would like to make any donation of a rare item, really anything at all, please esp me or Fawn any night of the week. Recently new heads were made available making others rare. Now is the time to clean out those chests of any Produce Heads you may be willing to part with. A Request: Anyone considering retiring from the Sunrays, please do not offer your Sunray Head up for anyone's auction. If you would like tokens for it, then something can be arranged. We should keep the special Sunray Heads "in the family." Thank you. KnightTimes: I am back from summer vacations and need everyone to submit to me any information you would like to see published in KnightTimes and on our Web pages. Information such as guild meeting schedules, guild meeting results and directions, upcoming events, appeals for help, original stories, poems, articles, your first day in Kymer, anything at all. KnightTimes is for you to get your word out to all of the other Sunrays. Also if you have a special event coming up and would like to see it posted on the WorldsAway Community Forum "News Flash" please ask me. In the future we will also make use of CompuServe's "What's New" menu you see each time you log on. Member Roster: I still need a great many of you to reply back with the correct spelling of your inworld name, your most common user ID, and the guild(s) of your choice. Also let me know if you are a Facilitator or Helper for those guilds. Since some guilds are reorganizing, the new Facilitators really need to have an accurate member list for their guild. Many members, have requested to remain a Sunray, but that they are too busy with waking world stuff to be very active right now. That is perfectly fine. This is really what we are looking for. Those who have the desire and still wish to participate when then can. It really helps us to know this so please don't be bashful. After a couple of weeks, I must drop those names I don't hear from so we have some kind of manageable working roster to work with. As soon as the new roster is completed the entire membership roster will automatically be mailed to all Facilitators and be available to any member upon request. Any suggestions, comments, questions, opinions, or answers are greatly appreciated during this time of Indigo's absence. Fawn and I are working hard to keep the Light shining and have a better Sunray Knights of Kymer organization when she returns. We would also like to thank all of the "new" Facilitators that have volunteered this summer to help jump start those guild(s) that needed help. May you find the Light shining on your path of life. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
