Staff Members ---------------------- Many of our authors have been contributing to the pages of ESP! on a regular basis and I decided it was about time to recognize their contributions by offering them staff positions. I am please to welcome the following to the ESP! staff: Contributing Editor: Just Ducky Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects Contributing Editor: Hispaniclytes Corner Hispaniclyte Boricua Contributing Editor: KnightTimes Sunray Render Columnist: Tarot Majik: Unraveling the Knots Hierophant Srk Columnist: TG's Hatemail Throbbing Gristle HMS Columnist: The Witching Hour Witchy I thank each of these avatars for their efforts on behalf of ESP! and look forward to having them on the team! Announcing ESP!'s TWIP (This Week In Phantasus) ------------------------------------------------ As of the August 4 issue, ESP! will be publishing a separate gaming magazine called ESP!'s TWIP (This Week In Phantasus). I am pleased to welcome Jal and Sweet Suz to the ESP! staff as Co-Editors of TWIP. See Suz' article for more information on their plans for TWIP! Our Event Schedule will be appearing in TWIP in two formats: the Date/Time format as we currently publish it and a second format which will group like games/events together: Bingo Games, Other Gambling Games, Word Games (Trivia, etc.) and any other categories which are necessary. We hope this will be a welcome addition to our event and scheduling information! ESP! Zipped ----------- Starting with this issue, all GIFs and accompanying files will be zipped together in one easy, smaller download. This will allow all our readers to get everything which goes with one issue and will also help to conserve library space. I had planned on making it a self-extracting zip file until someone brought to my attention that owners of MACs may not be able to run an .EXE file. So, to serve our MAC owners as well as our PC owners, we will simply ZIP it all up in one package and let you unzip it your- selves. ESP! Index ---------- Thanks to Cosmocat, we are now providing an Index of all cover and feature stories in all issues of ESP! from Volume 1 Issue 1 through Issue 22. Event announcements and reports are not included as we deemed those to be time-dated material which really do not warrant being on an index. If you disagree and would like to see those on the index, please let us hear from you! The Index is set up in two sections: the first is set up according to the main sections of ESP! and then alphabetical by title; the second section is set up alphabetically by author. We plan on updating this Index at least every six issues and will be automatically including it in the zipped package. All part of our efforts to serve you better! ESP! Staff Positions -------------------- We are looking for avatars who would like to become involved in our continued efforts to improve ESP! and keep it alive and fresh. The following positions are all currently available. They are, at this time, voluntary and do not offer token salaries, as ESP! has no income of its own. We hope this will change in the future. If you are interested in becoming a part of a dynamic staff in one of the following positions, please send me email to 71273,373. If any of these positions give you an idea for something which you could uniquely do, please let me know. I'm open to all new ideas! Features Editor to secure stories for the Cover Story and Feature Story sections of ESP!; to cover (or find someone to cover) specific events inworld and write cover or feature stories re same; to work closely with Contributing Editors, Columnists and Reporters by providing information the FE may have that would be good for follow-up stories, etc.; to assist Brynne in the actual editing process of everything submitted. Public Relations Editor ESP! is working with Dot Warner and WATV stations she is bringing to Kymer. We are looking for someone who would work with Dot to obtain the "TV broadcasting schedule" for publication in ESP! each week, to write reviews, to prepare our ad spots, perhaps to put together a small staff who would take turns with broadcasting an "infomercial" of the contents of the current ESP! issue and anything else the person in this position would wish to do to insure the success of the WATV stations and help publicize ESP! inworld. Group Liaison Editor: to work at making contacts with the inworld avatar groups, becoming familiar with all the groups, keeping up on new groups, encouraging the current and new groups to submit to ESP! instead of posting to the forum, or putting things in the library without any public notice; writing about a group, or perhaps a general article that would address the overall activities of several of the groups in the last week, upcoming week, etc. (the "Avatar Groups of Phantasus" section of ESP! would be this editor's responsibility) Contributing Editors to write articles for the various sections of ESP!, to encourage avatars to submit articles, etc. and make sure these contributions are in publishable form before being sent to Brynne; to come up with ideas for contests, etc. ESP! can sponsor; any other tasks a CE would like to take on Columnists this position is different from Contributing Editor in that the columnist is only responsible for his/her particular column. It also does not need to be a regular weekly column; a minimum of one article every four issues is requested. Does not require as much of a time commitment as a CE. Reporters to work with Features Editor, Contributing Editors and Columnists to provide tidbits for their articles; a reporter can also submit his/her own article whenever s/he has items to submit (weddings, divorces, general "gossip", new businesses, etc.). DREAD.GIF --------- There have been some difficulties getting this GIF in the proper format for the Newstand Library this week; neither Sysop Laurie nor I could figure out what the problem was, even though I re-uploaded it three times. It *was* fine when I looked at it! I apologize to all of you who downloaded this GIF only to see that it was garbled text. I'm including it with this issue's zipped file. Gypsy Rose Vampire This week, enjoy two great stories from our fifth prize winners. Brynne's Note: With Dread's being called away, somehow we missed publishing the last Fourth Prize winning story by De Dannan. So we include his story along with last two fifth prize stories. Starting with Issue #23, we will be publishing the remaining non- winning entries. {!} - The Cynical Avatar: Part One - {!} By De Dannan Fourth Prize Winner Note: For the reader to understand fully some of the passages in this story. In London, a public lavatory has the letters WC above it. "Yea! Yea! Get a life!" That was the first cool thing I said to the two airheads, as I walked off that rusty old ship into Kymer. "Are you *new*, Cynical?" I mean what kind of question was that to ask anyone. "You saw me walk through them doors didn't you?! I just came from that rust bucket of a ship. Where was the crew? That parrot never shut up. What a boring journey, just as well nobody else was taking the voyage with me, I think I would have jumped over board at Komytee Island." "Apologies ... Cynical, I did not see you come from the Argo. Glasses are not wildly available in Kymer yet my friend." "Yea, sure ... Get a Life." "Do you need any help Cynical?" "Actually ... No! ... So get lost!" After coolly putting my head on once or twice, followed by the hooky kooky in body actions, I finally realised how to go to the next local. Then smooth as you like I clicked on the right arrow and eased my way down Cypress street, without uttering another word to those two airheads. First up was the Visitors Center. Might as well check this place out, can;t be any worse than that maggot ridden ship I came on. "Hello Cynical. Welcome to the VC. Do you need any help?" "Hmmm ... Doesn't look much like a water closet to me. Is this were I Que then, to use it? And no! I don't need any help!" "Sorry Cynical, you've lost me." "Never mind I'll find it myself." I clicked right quickly, just to jump the Que. Wouldn't you know it, that possessed parrot from the Bargo had already jumped the Que before me. I asked him where the Mens room was, and he wasn't saying a word. Typical, he drives me crazy for most of the journey here, and then when I ask him a question, he has nothing to say. I came to two conclusions, either someone finally had cut out his tongue thank Morpheus, or else he was really desperate to *GO* and did not want me using all the paper. I thought it would not be worth the effort waiting for the parrot, and all those other airheads to finish, so quick as you like I left them eating my dust. As I entered the next local I saw three airheads standing and chatting, one of them waved and starting speaking to me. "Hi Cynical." "Yea ... Sure. So what's to do around here?" "Well ... you can meet people and chat. Fall in love, and even get married." "What! As if I would. No woman's going to tie the Cynic down. I'd better stay in ghost mode from now on, before a swarm develops." "LOL ... Sure." "I'm serious, women just love me they do." "It must be your charm." "You've heard of me then? Be mean keep 'em keen, that's my motto, works every time." "LOL ... Have a few lined up already have we Cynical?" "Yea! Just had two at Cypress street, I couldn't get them off me." "Would you like me to esp them, and ask if they will leave you alone?" "Get a life! ... I'm off." I was glad to get rid of those three dead beats I can tell you. I strutted coolly like, into the next local, hoping to find somebody with a bit of life like myself. "Hi Cynical" "Yea! Yea! Is that all you people do here, stand around, wave, and be nice to each other?" "Well ... Yes ... But I can tell you a joke if you like." "O! Morpheus, first the parrot now this." "Excellent, here it is." "Yea! Yea! Get on with it." "We'll it all started when one of my friends bought a parrot in a cage" "What's with the obsessions with parrots around here?" "I'm not sure, something to do with Mythology and one called Hermes. Maybe you should ask one of the Oracles the next time you see one." "Oracles?" "Yes, an Oracle. Servants of Morpheus, the robed ones ... Can I go on with my joke now?" "Nope, but I'm sure you will anyway." "Anyway my friend bought this parrot and for two days the parrot didn't say a word." "Tell your friend I found his parrot at the Visitor's Center." "WILL YOU LET ME FINISH!" "Suit yourself." "Phew! THE PARROT didn't talk for two days, is that clear!" "Yea, no need to shout he he." "AAAAAAAHHHHH! So he went back to the shop where he bought it and asked for a refund. The owner stated that the reason the parrot had not spoken was because it was bored." "You must have allot in common with this friend of yours." "So the owner sold my friend a swing, that he put into the cage. The Parrot swung on the swing for two days, but still did not say a word. My friend returned to the shop and was persuaded to buy a ladder this time round. For the next two days the parrot swung on the swing, climbed up and down the ladder, but stayed silent." "Heard it! Only joking get on with it!" "He returned to the shop, where the owner persuaded my friend that a mirror might finally do the trick. If the parrot saw his reflection in the mirror he would think it was another male and begin to speak." "Is it me or am I falling asleep." "My friend bought the mirror and put it into the cage. Two days later my friend returned to the shop with the parrot. The owner asked what had happened. My friend told him that the parrot had swung on the swing, climbed up and down the ladder, looked at himself in the mirror for two days, then fell over ... Dead, without saying a word. Wait! Said the owner, the parrot's not dead yet, and he looks as if he's trying to say something. My friend pushed his ear close to the parrots beak, and with one last breath the parrot whispered "you forgot to buy me some bird seed."" "Get a life! ... I'm off!" I cruised the locals ignoring everyone on the way, just in case they had any jokes to tell. I suddenly came across an airhead who wanted to hold my head just to see what it felt like. So I gave it to him. "Yes! Yes! Another one for my collection." "What are you going on about?" "I've just stolen your head! I'm a thief." "Get a life! ... How could you have stolen it, if I gave it to you?" "O? Yea! Have you got anything in your pockets that you could put on the ground for me to steal." "Nope ... Why are you a thief anyway?" "Only bit of excitement I get in here, and of course the fame that goes with it." "Kewl! Might try that myself. You've probably heard of me already, word seems to travel fast here. Cynicals the name." "Nope ... Never heard of yea." "Hmm, where are my groupies when I need em. What's in the basket?" "Just a head." "We'll best not to keep all your heads in one basket eh! He he." "Get a life!" "Hey! That's my line." "Sure it is." "Hey thief! Can I hold that basket just to see what it feels like?" "ROFL ... BYE!" "Suit yourself." It's a wise thief that leaves when the cynic with a capital C gets going in a battle of wits. Sometimes I out do myself. If it wasn't for my brilliant quick wit, I might have been embarrassed just then. Now where did he go? I decided to get a new head, but everyone I tried to steal from, seemed to know exactly what I was going to do. That airhead with the basket must have got to them all before me. After fifty failed tries at stealing a head, I decided to give up and buy one. "Hey! ... You! ... Airhead!" "Are you talking to me, Cynical?" "Yea! You the Sunray! How do I buy a head?" He ran a macro as he called it, about earning tokens and playing games. "Get a life! I'm not going to all that trouble just to buy a head. Why don't you give me yours Mr. Sunshine." "O.K. Here you go." "What? You mean your going to give me your head, and I don't have to steal it?" "Yes, that is correct. I have other heads and you seem to need one." "Sucker! ... I'm off!" I quickly raced to the fountain and tried my new head on. Perfect! Now off to that Atm the sunshine airhead spoke about, to withdraw some tokens. "Hello Sunray ... Can you help me?" "What?! Get a life! Cynical helps no one." "LOL Sunray Cynical, good joke. How do I get to the V-mart?" "Do I have Sunray written on my head or something ... I thought I already told you ... " "We'll ... yes ... you do." "Wait!" With one quick click on my head there is was SUNRAY HEAD "So how do I get to the V-mart?" "AAAAAAHHHHHH! Stay right here!" I rushed back to Mr. Sunshine and quickly gave him back his head. "You don't like it then?" "Get a life!" "I have another one if you would like it." "NO! ... I'll get my own!" "As you wish." "Where's the V-mart?" "Keep going left and you will find it. I will take you there if you wish." "Get lost!" I went back to the fountain and told the other airhead how to get to the V-mart. He was very thankful, which was not doing my street cred any good. So I told him to beat it. Time to disrupt some games and increase my fame. Soon everyone would know who cynical was, and be tripping over themselves to speak with me ... yea! Groupies. First up was the races in the Carob local. "Can you ghost please Cynical, so the races can continue." "LOL Nope!" "We can not continue until you ghost." "Get a life! He he." Just then one of them robed ones came along out of nowhere. Before I had a chance to tell him to get a life, I was in the void local. Now how did he do that? "You again? And still got that basket I see." "This is my second home." "Got any bright ideas how we're going to bust outa here?" "Yep." "Excellent ... This should send me right up the charts of infamy for busting out of the void." "We have to apologise." "APOLOGISE! Get a life!" "We'll Cynical if you want a life outside the void, you will have to, it's the only way." "Ah shucks. Call that robed fellow and tell him I won't disrupt any more games." "I already have, he's letting us out he he." "Hey! Thief. Just before we go our separate ways." "Yep." "Mind if I hold that basket just once?" "ROFL you remind me of a couple of Sunrays I know." "Sure ... Bye." The robed fella teleported me to a new local, where a game was being hosted by them there Acolytes. He said it would be my first test. "Please ghost Cynical and esp the host for a door prize." "What's going on here?" "A raffle. Please ghost, so we can continue." "I want some tickets so I can be in the raffle." "You can buy tickets at the end for next week." "NEXT WEEK! Get a ... ok ... Ghosting, you watching this robed one, I never said a thing." I ghosted hoping that the robed one had not seen my near slip up. Then Mr. Sunshine decided to esp me to see if I needed any help. "Welcome to the raffle cynical." "Get lost Sunshine." "Did you get some money out of the Atm?" "No! I forgot my PIN number!" "LOL That's ok. I'll buy ten tickets for you, so you can be in next weeks raffle, you can pay me back whenever you like." "Get a life!" "Your welcome." I ESPd the host to ask if the robed one was still around, so I could be on my way. I had just about enough of this place. "And the winner of our next door prize is ... Cynical ... Cynical? Come down and get your prize." I unghosted and before I knew it, everyone was congratulating me and telling me how lucky I was. I even got a WTG from Sunshine and the Basket thief. "What is this for?" "Everyone wins something at sometime at the games here in Kymer, well done Cynical." "That's it I'm outa here!" As quick as you like I was out of that dreamscape. I mean, who would want to stay in a place, where everyone is happy, friendly and caring. With games you cannot loose at, thieves who are pleasant to talk to, and people who can't stop giving you gifts. I was just about to delete every file related to this Kymer place, when a thought jumped into my head. What if that sunshine guy bought those ten tickets for me and I won the jackpot ... I wonder ... I might just check next week to see ... just for a second . {!} - The Coming of ... - {!} by ... (You'll See! ) Fifth Prize Winner As he looked around the room at all of his friends and family that were gathered together, he realized that if he didn't return, these were the ones who would miss him the most. And over there was the Goddess who had befriended him and his family. His mentor approached and handed him the goblet. "Sit on the bed and drink as much as you can. It is very bitter, but will act swiftly. Lie down as soon as you are finished. Journey well!" He lay on the bed as the potion took effect and wondered what new places he would be part of. His mentor had said for years that other worlds existed for those wishing to explore. It only took courage and the desire to open the mind. His hand grasped that of his wife and he smiled. "I will retu......" and he was unconscious. The Goddess looked at him, felt his pulse and turned around to the others. "He is in the arms of the God of Sleep", she said. Then, before any could stop her, she lifted the unconscious form and disappeared! "I will care for him and he will return to you when his journeys are completed" was what they all heard in their minds. Then she and the body were gone. Meanwhile, he traveled in another form - one totally different, yet somehow him. He had no name for this form. All of a sudden, he saw something - it appeared as a doorway in the midst of an unbroken sparkling of stars. He wondered what was there and the entity that he was drifted closer, closer, closer and then went through. He was in another world! He sensed it, knew it! He reached out a hand to touch the tree he saw and it went right into the trunk! So he was a ghost to this world. He drifted with the clouds, watching as much as he could. Strange metal-like birds roaring faster than a horse could run! In the oceans, wood and metal sailing ships. Some with sails, many more without. How did they move? Who or what guided them? He drifted close to one and saw what he believed to be a human being in a small cabin with strange equipment in it. He drifted on and on. Finally, land came into view and wonder of wonders! Buildings! But so large and tall! So much noise - more so than the farm markets that he was used to. And strange wheeled carts that smelt horrid! He could only think of rotten eggs. Many people in the streets and buildings ... amazing! So many people! Of a sudden, the doorway opened too close to avoid going through. He was back in the starry hallway again. A voice spoke to him, through him, all around him. "Be it known that you are being guided by one known as Morpheus! In your existence he is known only as the God of Sleep, but to the peoples in the world you just left, he is Morpheus!" He replied, "I wanted to see new vistas that my mentor told me were possible, but that is beyond belief for most. If I had not seen it, I would say that it impossible! How is this so? Where am I going to? Will you advise me?" And the voice spoke again. "I can only tell you that where you are going is to the people of that other world a simple dream. They believe that it is an extension of *their* minds, yet it is not. They are the fuel and the fire that should unite their differences into a single entity." He pondered this statement and then asked, "Then what is my purpose in your plans? I belong not of that world, but of a different one! Of what consequence is this entity to your plans?" An answer was not readily forthcoming, almost as if the question had caught this being off guard. Shortly, though, "It is my desire that the humor and tempered strength of your spirit can help to mold the majority into a cohesive unit. There will be members who tread the dark path. These you should try to understand and pass that understanding on to those willing to listen." Again, another doorway opens some distance along and he feels a pulling toward that door. As a last effort, he asks "But what else should I do? How do I do it? Do I get a hint?" With a chuckle, the being says "No hints, do not pass GO and do not collect $200!" And the presence leaves just as he plummets through the doorway! The next thing he is aware of is having a body! And a head! He can feel and touch and jump and bow! He notices, however that he is on the deck of a small ship seemingly headed for a misty landfall on an island. So he decides to explore the ship some before he encounters truly unknown lands. There is no way to go anywhere except into the Captain's cabin, so he enters. it is empty except for a talkative bird on a perch. He listens. He is told to open the chest and take tokens in there. Tokens? What the devil are tokens? What are they used for? The bird rambles on about several items and he files them away for future use: bodies, heads, names, Kymer, Phantasus. And the bird is Hermes? What a name! The ship makes landfall and he goes to leave. Now there is only one direction to move in. It is very frustrating being herded like this. He doesn't like it. "But what is this? A domed wardrobe? No, a body machine. Hmmmmm This body is a mite scrawny", he thinks, "I wonder....." Yes! Male body, muscular build! I'll change into that, maybe." buzzzzzzzzzzz "Stars above, it did work! I feel and seem to look almost like my real self!" "Oh oh! I just saw a mirror! Do not like this face! There is a machine here with heads! I can change my looks? Let me see......" whirrrrrr A new head is displayed. Over and over until one that is more acceptable than the others is selected. He chooses to buy it. Like magic, tokens are removed from his pocket and the head appears in his hand! He puts it on and places the old one in his pocket as he was told he could do. "Strange, I don't remember being told that!", he mutters. He enters the next room and there is a book on a pedestal. He looks and it is the Book of Names. Even though there is a full page, he can only read the last 5 names entered. It appears he is to select a name here, also. The only one he can think of is the one he lived with in another world, another life, so he writes that into the Book of Names. SPARHAWK Sparhawk looks over his body, nods with satisfaction and strolls out through the doors onto an area named Cypress Street. He is in Kymer! Sparhawk has come to Kymer! Now what? Another story - later. {!} - How I Arrived in Kymer - {!} by Hispaniclyte Venus Cleopatra Fifth Prize Winner I always dreamed to see all my acts, like being another person; seeing different people from different countries; being in places without the others being able to see when I wanted to; being able to change my look whenever I want. One day I was sleeping and suddenly I felt how Morpheus called me to fall in his arms. When I arrived at his side I saw how I would talk with the others, I could have the body and the face that I wanted, I was in joy all the time walking around without getting tired. I could overcome the barrier created by the distance, I could pass from a weather to another weather in any season of the year, until a RING RING from the telephone awoke me :-( It was my boyfriend, he said: "Hey wake up I am going to visit you, I got a gift for you!" He brought me a mysterious diskette, in it was the route to the unreal world. I ran the diskette and like magic I was in front of a door that takes me to a yellow brick road. As I walked this road I noticed arrows in the bricks pointing forward. I continued walking and heard a voice that told me: "Welcome to CompuServe! I am the good witch from the East! Click here and you will arrive at WorldsAway Oz- :-)" I obeyed the good witch from the East. But ahead in the road I heard a voice. "Sorry, connection failed AAAAJAJAJA...JA..JA...JA!- :-o" It was the evil witch of the West, she tried to kidnapped me. "You have to disconnect you are in my Winsock spell- :-o" Then a brilliant idea came to my mind, I hid behind a sign that read Session Settings there I found the Winsock antidote and used it over me and threw the rest against her, suddenly she started screaming: "AAAAHHHHJJJJJJJ...NO...NO..!" :-} I got rid of the evil witch of the West and continued my journey on the yellow brick road, I arrived at a lake where I found a boat. I took it and arrived in the fantastic city of Phantasus Oz. There awaits for me a Kitten, a Steel Man and a Scarecrow, they welcomed me. I told them how happy I was to be there and that I wanted to meet Morpheus and the Wizard of Oz. They took me to the Temple Registry and told me that the Wizard of Oz had gone to another city with Morpheus. Then I visited all the city and met the habitants. They were all extraordinary, the inhabitants were gnomes, cats, pigs, ducks, tomatoes, roses, pumpkins, televisions, ... I could conquer the barrier of time, climate, I could see my life, I could be however I want anytime, I could even be a ghost in a locale, how I have dreamed. I realize that peace reigns in WorldsAway Oz and for that I decided to stay and live here. Now I have friends from all over the World!!! ;-) {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy Preparing for Magic ------------------- You might feel you simply cannot fit another project into your day. You might think that magic is for gypsies or witches who were born that way anyhow, or that you need to be initiated by some powerful personage - and where are you going to find one, between stretch- aerobic classes, office hours and baby teething problems? Whether you know it or not, magic has already entered your life. Experience magic, even for just a moment, and you will not be the same again. You will see ordinary objects shine like stars - teacups and saucers becoming holy with life; then you will know that whatever you are spending your time on - success, relationship, career, family, money - is only important when it carries inside it that magical quality. All you need to do at the beginning is to follow the pull of magic. Give yourself a few minutes - maybe before going to sleep, when your children are in bed and you are finished for the day. You don't need to be made-up and dressed - take your most pressing problem and do a little magic for it. See what happens. It will be fun, relaxing and entertaining; something you can do totally alone, something that involves you in an activity that's different, and a pleasure. You can begin without complications, using a flower or a concoction of herbs or a single candle. The magic circle and the symbols of the elements are useful, but not a must. In fact nothing is a must except your willingness and concentration. At first you may not find an extraordinary result from your magic, but you will begin to feel what it is to do magic. This feeling will stay with you during the rest of the day. You might not notice it, but it will be there, slowly changing and deepening the way you perceive reality. Maybe one day you will notice that without any special purpose in mind you have bought a bunch of red roses to adorn your bedroom - that same evening you spend a very intense, passionate time with the man or woman in your life. Or you suddenly notice the rhymes of a song going round in your head; you listen to the words and you realize, for example, that there are words in the song that make you aware of something you have been wanting for a long time without being con- scious of it. Or you could find yourself replacing the old doormat with a new one - only to greet, later, a long lost friend showing up at your doorstep. You begin seeing connections, links between experiences which evade your normal casual way of seeing life. You realize more and more the magic connection. You are not doing anything different; you still eat at eight and take the bus to work - but slowly everything finds a new meaning. Magic rituals and incantations are really only ways of repeating under "laboratory conditions" what is happening in life all the time anyway. Doing them opens your eyes to what you are creating for yourself outside your magic laboratory, in real life, as well as showing you ways in which you can change your life. As you progress in your relationship with magic you see how all of your life's elements are just like pieces of a puzzle which can be moved around by magic, until you form the intended picture - your real self. Then it is not at all a matter of finding time. As you stop running around trying to fulfill ever-growing expectations, outside factors no longer control you, and your time becomes your dimension - a magic gift of existence for you to express all that you need to express and create all that you want to create within your own life. Intensity and Concentration --------------------------- Now you want to proceed with exploring the ins and outs of the magic world, but before looking at the moon and gathering herbs, it is necessary to consider just exactly what you have to "be" in order to "do" magic. What you need for magic is not so much a quality, as an intention. Everybody is fit for magic, if only they want to be. In fact "will" is the first requisite of magic. You need to focus on the matter at hand, gather as much emotional steam as you can master and will the thing to happen. Second, and equally important, is your unwavering belief that what you do is going to succeed. This is not so much a positive action, something you actively do by repeating to yourself, "this is going to work, this is going to work," but more a peaceful awareness of lack of doubt. It is not easy to be one hundred percent focused and perfectly calm. It is likely that in your normal day a stressful combination of work and/or family will take you as far from calm and concentration as you can be. Learning to do magic is like learning to swim - you learn to do it by doing it. Take a little time out of each week from your normal occu- pations and dedicate it to exploring magic; you will find it becomes easier and easier to concentrate totally on the subject you wish to achieve. The ability and the resulting peacefulness will then spill back out into your normal day. Soon you will be able to see your daily activities as acts of magic where life is no longer controlling you, but you are creating it. The Four Powers of The Magus ---------------------------- Knowledge, courage, will and silence: traditionally called the four powers of the magus, these qualities are what you need to aid your ability to focus and to concentrate. Knowledge - This is the voice of your inner wisdom, the part in you which knows. It is not knowledge in the way you learn at school; is it knowledge which cannot be acquired for it is to be lived or experienced. Courage - When your own, inner truth challenges ideas and preconcep- tions you have lived with for a long time, you will need courage to follow it. Will - This is what keeps you on the path, fending off the thousand and one distractions that can take you away from it. Silence - This is the ability to shut off the noise of the mind; all the constant thoughts and worries which go around and around in your head. Without this ability, you cannot hear your inner voice. Nourish these qualities - remember them. You don't need a special setting and a special time to do that. You might be sitting in your office or at the counter of a local store or waiting for the subway ... just remember: "Am I listening to myself?" Remembering the four powers can bring about deep changes in your life. It is in fact the first part of your magic training, and a very important part. Be practical though; don't expect too much too soon. For example, you might be on a train going to the movies and you remember the four powers. Perhaps you realize that this is not what you really want to do. It is easy to get off the train and go home - in this case you are entirely master of your activities. However, if you are working and your inner voice tells you that this is not the right job for you, it might be a little impractical to get up and leave your job! Find alternative ways of being, retrain yourself, and explore new possibilities, for magic is about being intelligent, courageous and present. It is an ever-growing process. By remembering the four powers of the magus often, you will enter this process, and while you see your ability to focus and to concentrate grow every day, your life will be changing from mundane to magical. Next week I will talk more about preparing yourself for a magic ritual. This will include cleansing, clothing, concentrating and your magic place. Blessed * Be {!} - Common Solutions - {!} By Happy Little Trees Question: How do I change my name? Solution: Changing your name is very simple. What you must first do is make sure you have enough tokens to "purchase" a new name. New avatars of Kymer are allowed one free name change inside of the Promenade, and one free name change of the Temple Registry. Click on the door of the Temple of Morpheus and select PASS THROUGH. Once inside, click on the Book of Names and select REGISTER NEW NAME. Be careful!! Decide what new name you want before you click on this option. Name changing can be fun, but it also can be a bit tedious on fellow avatars. Constant changes in names may confuse avatars, so try to only change your name when needed. Good Luck! All appreciated! Please e-mail me at 76463,1405. {!} - TG's Hatemail No 11 - {!} surely no hatemail this time! By Throbbing Gristle HMS and Hispaniclyte Boricua Heyhey, it came as I said. This week I was sitting here without an idea of what to write about. Then, in reaction to my last week's writing, Boricua came and saved me. This letter was posted in the forum before and also sent to a lot of people by mail. But it should reach as many people as possible, and ESP! is one possibility for this. So PLEASE READ THIS AND SUPPORT IT!!!! Do not send your support to me, send it to Ivan directly please. But send it. BEGIN OF LETTER ******************* Hi Throbbing Gristle, your section is a real important one in ESP!, it let us express all what we think about Kymer happenings. My letter for Hatemail this week will not be about inworld happenings in Kymer but it relates directly with it. Behind every avatar in the Dreamscape there is a person who laugh, cry, love, yells, sleep, ... and PAY (and I am not happy on how much I am paying). We have to stand together to overcome this problem that is giving real HARD blows to the dream. Here is a copy of a letter I emailed to many avatars and posted in the forum, as loyal hatemail readers you should read this: My name is Ivan E. Bernard (inworld known as Hispaniclyte Boricua). Here is a letter I will submit by e-mail and by regular mail to CompuServe and to Fujitsu Cultural Technologies. It is an inquiry letter asking for better access pricing plans to the Dreamscape. Many of you, like me, are suffering of extremely high bills from CompuServe just for our love to Worlds Away. Also many of us had to say good-bye to friends who have left Worlds Away because they can not afford it or just because they moved to other virtual worlds in the internet where we can be for unlimited time for a fixed monthly fee through an internet provider. We all love Worlds Away but sometimes the real world blows (financial blows) to the Dreamscape make us think that we should leave too. As customers we have the right to ask for better prices for the products we buy. It is sad to refer to Kymer as a product, but to our real banks' accounts that is what it is. Please read the letter and if you agree with what I state in it and ask for, and want to support it, please e-mail me at 103201,2414 before August 5 with your full real name, full avatar name and user id so I can include you in the list of people who support the letter that I will attach to it. I will need all the support I can get so please forward this letter to as many avatars as you can. This will be the letter (somethings will change because of suggestions I got from other avatars but the main idea will be the same, everyone will receive a final copy of what will be reaching CompuServe and FCT before sending it to them): --------------------------- Dear ladies and gentlemen: You are doing a wonderful job with the Worlds Away forum in CompuServe. I love Worlds Away, it is the main reason why I stay in CompuServe. As loyal avatars of the Dreamscape we are having problems with the connection charges we are receiving. The Super Value Plan of 20 hours for $24.95 is simply not enough to fully enjoy Worlds Away. With all the other virtual worlds developing in the internet and so many companies like Spry Net offering unlimited access time to the internet for a fixed monthly fee, it seems that it is really a bad decision for us, the customers, to stay in Worlds Away. Even though you get many newbies every day, you should have noticed that many avatars have leave the Dreamscape mainly because of the high charges. Here I suggest a few alternatives that you should consider to retain the older avatars, bring back some of those who already gone and bring even more newbies to Kymer: 1) Unlimited access time for a fixed monthly fee to the virtual world part of the Worlds Away forum 2) Provide access to Worlds Away through WOW 3) Provide access to Worlds Away through the internet 4) Unlimited access time to the entire CompuServe service for a fixed monthly fee Alternative number one and alternative number four will give you yet more advantages. More people will sign up to CompuServe just because they have heard from friends about how wonderful is Worlds Away. Also actual CompuServe users would have more time available for exploring CompuServe giving them another reasons to stay connected to your service and spend more time on-line. Alternative two will give a huge boost to the WOW service subscribers' rate giving it a great position in the on-line market. Alternative four will make avatars who are not in CompuServe to get a CIS account and the ones who are in CompuServe to retain their accounts, just to access the Worlds Away Community Forum to get the newspapers, game schedules, games' software and all the things that are uploaded there. Also will get them to know the great mail service that you provide and by the way explore other CompuServe forums and services. All those alternatives while benefit you, will benefit us the avatars and accordingly the Dreamscape. Games and events hosts as myself (Miss WA, Hispaniclytes' Riddles and Night of Spanish Dreams) will have more time to prepare them and to create and organize new ones, giving yet other reasons to other avatars to stay with your service and on-line. Also you can rise up vendo prices to adjust them proportionally with the new time avatars will stay on-line. The Dreamscape is a great place to live but it sometimes takes to many hard blows from real life. Fast action to solve these high charges' problems will assure you that actual avatars stay with your service and that many new will come. Attached is a list of all CompuServe users (real name, avatar name and user id) who support this letter. We are confident that an on-line service provider with your reputation for excellent service will want to resolve this matter quickly. Keep the dream alive, there is more to life on line, Ivan E Bernard (Hispaniclyte Boricua) 103201,2414 END OF LETTER ************************** I have nothing to add to this. Ivan told me he sent this to me because it might better fit in my column. Thank you for this, cause it makes me feel that this column makes sense and is not just chitchat. And that's what I want it to do. Hope for more next week :-) TG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Auction News: As of July 19, the VoCC Auction will accept bids in 10 token increments. This Wednesday, July 31, the Duckolyte Benefit Auction moves to its new turf, Duck Soup. Stock is being sold fast. The lacy heart head, having been withdrawn from the acolyte vendo, seems under priced. Never as numerous as the rose head, this head is almost sure to experience a resurgence of value in the future. Last week, very rare heads, such as the Friar, continued to sell far below value. Rich and famous traders, disguised as their alternate avatars, are buying with abandon. Middle-class avatars should consider investing in recently-rare food items, which are selling at a low price now. Historically, food items have provided a very large return on investment. Getting A-Head -------------- We've been asked to supply a list of the heads made rare by the vendo restock on July 18, and also to supply a list of the new heads. Sellers are paid more than pawn value, and buyers of vendo items can purchase for less than the current vendo prices. Prices for current items are negotiable within narrow limits because of the small spread involved; sellers are always paid at least 81% of vendo value, and buyers pay no more than 99% of vendo value. There is more flexibility in pricing of rare items. A lay-away plan is available to buyers. Open by appointment, or ESP Badgerette, Rudolfo, or Happy Little Trees inworld. Tantalizing Tidbits ------------------- It may seem like ancient history now, but remember the night of the NuYu restock, when restless ghosts counted down to the opening, but were told to be patient? Ever idly wondered about that delay? Those who may have pondered the question could ask themselves, "What don't you want to do when restocking a vendo?" Probably many things, but I'll bet that putting the vendo in your pocket, then deleting yourself would be near the top of the list. Fortunately, the green-robed cavalry and the purple-robed PR were at hand. And, of course, the responsible party, undefeated and fortunately undeleted, always has some burgundy close by . Debido a problemas finacieros no sera hasta agosto que Hispaniclytes' Riddles volver a Kymer, pero no se desesperen porque no ha desaparecido. Esta semana les traigo un chiste de Alvarez Guedes Disfrazado de Gorila Uno que queria salir de Cuba, se puso de acuerdo con un amigo de el que trabajaba con un circo espanol que estaba en La Habana, para que le ayudara a realizar un plan que el tenia. El habia visto en el circo a un payaso que se disfrazaba de gorila. El disfraz era perfecto y el payaso era mas o menos de la misma estatura que el. Si su amigo le conseguia el disfraz, el se lo ponia, se metia en una jaula, y podria escapar de Cuba en esa forma. Asi lo hicieron. El dia que el barco salio del puerto de La Habana rumbo a Espana, su amigo le dio el disfraz, el se lo puso, su amigo lo metio en una jaula y lo llevo en ella hasta donde estaban los demas animales del circo. Alli lo dejo. Pero al poco rato, trajeron una jaula con tres leones y la pusieron junto a la de el. Alguien abrio la puerta de su jaula y la puerta de la jaula de los leones. Cuando el vio aquello, se aterro y empezo a dar gritos: "Saquenme de aqui, socorro, sacanme de aqui!" Y se le acerca uno de los leones y le dice: "Callate la boca, que le vas a @#$%& la salida a todo el mundo!" {!} - Mitologia Griega: Hercules y Deyanira - {!} por Hispaniclyte Venus Cleopatra Hercules, su nombre en griego Herakles o Nefele, fue conocido como un hombre de mucha fuerza, considerado un semidios. Fue el mas celebre de los heroes de la antiguedad, hijo de Zeus y Alcmena. Hera, celosa de que Hercules no era su hijo, puso en su cuna dos serpientes, pero el nino las ahogo entre sus brazos. Al crecer tuvo varias esposas y amantes. Una de las primeras fue Deyanira, su nombre en griego Ixion. Deyanira era hija de Eneo, rey de Calidonia, en Etonia. Aquelao y Hercules lucharon por su amor y, vencedor este ultimo tuvo con ella un hijo: el centauro Neso. El centauro Neso {en griego Nesus}, este ayudo a Deyanira a cruzar el rio Evena, intento raptarla y violentarla por tal motivo Hercules le dio muerte. En ataques de locura dio muerte a sus hijos por este motivo fue condenado a realizar doce dificiles empresas, ordenada por su hermano Euristeo, que segun la leyenda fueron realizadas: 1-Mato al leon de Nemea {monstruo protegido por Hera; al que Hercules le dio muerte. Para conmemorar esa victoria, cada dos anos se celebraban las fiestas Nemeas {de la localidad Homon } en un bosque consagrado a Zeus. 2-Dio muerte a la hidra Lerna. 3-Capturo el jabali de Erimanto. 4- Capturo la corza de Cerinea. 5-Extermino los pajaros de Estinfalia. 6-Domestico el toro de Creta. 7-Mato a Diomedes, rey de Tracia, y amanso los caballos de este con la carne de su amo. 8-Lucho y vencio Las Amazonas. 9-Limpio las caballerizas de Augias, desviando la corriente del rio Alfeo. 10-Mato al gigante Gerion despues de robarle el ganado. 11-Se apodero de las manzanas de oro del jardin de las Hesperides, y 12-Liberto a Teseo de los infiernos. Se le atribuyeron muchas otras hazanas. Por todas ellas recibio la inmortalidad. Pero Neso antes de morir le entrego a Deyanira su tunica y le dijo a esta: Aqui te entrego tu tunica, la cual esta impregnada con una droga, la cual te hara recobrar el amor de tu esposo, si algun dia lo pierdes. Al tiempo Hercules le fue infiel con Yole, entonces al Deyanira enterarse le mando su tunica azul, impregnada con la droga de Neso. Hercules se cubrio con ella y, presa de terribles ardores, se suicido lanzandose a una pira.:-( Entonces Deyanira al enterarse se mato. :-( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Larry was of great assistance to Raptor, Senior Wing, in making the Duckolyte Benefit Auction a fun event and successful showcase of rarities. Thanks, Larry! We wish you the best of luck in your new job responsibilities. {!} - Duck Trivia Rules Change - {!} By Brains, Wing Commander Greetings All Duckolyte TriviaMaster players, Some people have complained about the duration of the game, and have said that they want to compete for the big prizes, but can't devote 2 hours to trivia every week and keep within their budgets. Therefore, we have decided to cut the actual game portion to one hour. We will accomplish this by doing three things: 1) Allowing 15 seconds before the countdown begins. This allows ample time for even people on slow machines and slow nodes to get their responses in; 2) Giving door prizes at the end of the game, after all weekly game prizes have been awarded; 3) Beginning game registration promptly at 7 p.m. WAT. The Krewe of the Duckolytes appreciates your support and participation, and looks forward to seeing you at the turf "Duck Hunt". This month's monthly prizes include a Panther Head, Frost Elf Head, and Snowman Head. The weekly prizes include, rare chests, rare heads, and many more items. See you at the Duck Hunt promptly at 7:00 p.m. WAT. {!} - "Pinkie and the Brains" - {!} By Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects "Pinkie and the Brains", Kymer's new hide and seek game, sponsored by the Krewe of the Duckolytes and ESP!, Kymer's premier weekly newspaper, ended the month on a high note. In response to a request from Oracle Teresias, a new macro has been developed which will allow the co-host remaining in the turf to call back the dispersed ghosts after the Hidden has been found and the round has been completed. The test was successful, and the new procedure received resoundingly affirmative reviews from the participants. No more worries about missing a round! The July 25 session of "Pinkie and the Brains" was attended by Brynne, Editor-in-Chief of ESP!, and was co-hosted by Passion, as Pinkie, and by Brains, Wing Commander of the Krewe of the Duckolytes. Because this was the last game of the month, an additional Championship Round was played in order to determine the winner of the special monthly prize. The ever-clever Unga-Bunga, Duckolyte Wing, won Round #1, by solving the clue "Tea for Two" and being the first to locate Brynne by the Starway drinks vendo, then uttering the secret phrase aloud. Unga selected prize chest #4, which was unlocked in view of the gathered ghosts to reveal a TV head. Darkhorse didn't need to love anyone a bushel and a peck to locate Passion by the chest vendo in the VMart. Gentleman that he is, Darkhorse expressed love for the game when the prize chest he selected, #3, was opened to reveal a rare, bright red Space Chest. Obviously, the game couldn't be a no-brainer, when Brains, Wing Commander, was doing the hiding. EMP Lord Odo The Changeling solved the clue "You Light Up My Life", and uttered the phrase aloud when he encountered the redoubtable Wing Commander nesting next to the candle vendo. Odo selected prize chest #2, which the secret surprise of a rare Trumpet ornament. LumMoose, Duckolyte Sr. Wing, tripped the light fantastic and solved the clue "10 Cents a Dance" to locate Brynne at Regency Hall. Lum selected prize chest #5, and won a Rose head painted rare. Piemur was the winner of Round #5, by solving the clue "Getting to Know You" and hustling to the Cyprus Street Newbie Entrance to find Passion. Piemur won the contents of prize chest #1: a sack containing a Valentine, a Wendy head painted rare red, and rare red body spray. Round 6 was the monthly Championship Round. Brains had concocted the diabolically-difficult clue "String of Pearls", which Unga-Bunga hastily solved to find the Wing Commander duck-walking by the VMart Medicine Vendo. Only one other competitor, Dark Sun, proved able to solve the clue and, in due course, he joined Unga-Bunga and Brains by the vendo. Unga's skill at deciphering the almost indecipherable was amply rewarded with a Bag-O-Chips Head. Are you intuitive? Are you familiar with the Dreamscape? Do you like word puzzles? Do you trust your inner voice? These are the qualities needed to succeed at "Pinkie and the Brains". You don't need a 686 200MHz computer with an ISDN modem on a blitzing node, so don't miss the fun! Join Passion, Brains, and the Krewe of the Duckolytes on Thursdays at 7 p.m. WAT in the turf "Pinkie's Place". The topic was the usual "Duck Soup", consisting of assorted facts from everywhere, put together by a duck, but the first half of the game consisted entirely of Olympics questions. To sweeten the victory, the Wing Commander enriched the pot of prizes. First and second place winners were given the opportunity to select the prize of their choice, the third place winner was awarded the remaining special game prize, and the fourth place winner received a vase of flowers. Following were the winners of the week: 1. Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing, who selected the red space chest containing a rare-painted bunny head and matching body paint; 2. Sunray Texas Snowflake, who selected a picnic basket packed with goodies, including a bag-o-chips head; 3. Sir Launce, who was awarded packed with a rare-painted rose head and matching body spray; 4. Mufasa, who received a vase containing a flower shower. Because Brains lived up to his name, having composed a tremendously trivial test, no tie-breaker questions were required. The July Grand Prize is a Panther Head, specially engraved by the Oracles, second prize is a Frost Elf head, and third prize is a Snowman head. The monthly Champion is determined by on the following point system, based upon the outcome of each game during the month: 1st Place = 5 Points 2nd Place = 3 Points 3rd Place = 2 Points 4th Place = 1 Point Following are the standings for the month as of July 21: Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13 points Acolyte Hindemith . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 points Sunray Texas Snowflake. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 points Sir Launce. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 points Jayvee. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 points Mufasa. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 points Julie S.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 points Duckolyte Biker Steve . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1 point Askani, Duckolyte Sr. Wing. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1 point Cosmocat. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1 point Odo the Changling . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1 point Dark Sun has already won the monthly Championship, but the second and third place prizes remain to be won. In order to make the game more exciting and to eliminate advantages for those having mighty machines and modems and to eliminate disadvantages for those forced to use noxious nodes, two important changes are being implemented. First, each player sending the correct answer receives one point, with no bonus points awarded for speed. Second, as of July 28, the countdown will begin after 15 seconds, eliminating the infamous dual computer, CD-ROM encyclopedia advantage. The Krewe of the Duckolytes invites all citizens of Kymer to come and test their mettle under the new scoring and timing system. Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
