The following are letters I received about and for him, but which he has not seen. It is my hope that another friend of his, who is still with us, will download this issue and see that he gets a copy. Dear Dread, Whatever your reasons might have been, We WILL miss you and your ideas for ESP! I hope that we will find the driving force to replace you, but looking over your letters I'm sure this will not be easy. If you stay in CIS please contact me from time to time. All the best, Throbbing Gristle HMS ------------------------- Hi all, Oh no, I don't believe it ... Even though I haven't been with the ESP! all that long (#14/15) I have to say that I find it upsetting that someone especially Dread is resigning, what makes it worse is that he is leaving WA as well. Dread, I don't think there will be anyone capable of replacing your abilities; it's going to be extremely difficult for Brynne to find someone to replace you. I will miss the competition you created e.g. the ESP! Writing competition, I had such fun being apart of it, I thank you for making me apart of it. I do hope we can keep in touch through e-mail. I'm not sure how Brynne will find a better assistant editor, I don't think she ever will. Well Dread I wish you all the best in whatever you must do, I hope you can eventually return to ESP! Best Regards Paul (London Lad) ------------------------- Farewell, Friend. F6 Shock and disbelief: Dread leaving? Thanks for all that you did to bring ESP! and the Dreamscape itself to life. Even before I had an avatar at home, I was reading your articles in ESP! and appreciating your well thought-out perspectives on the Dreamscape. Your hand was clearly evident in the flourishing of ESP! Acolyte Brynne chose well! Thanks also for your work on the Writer's Competition (more like a Celebration than a Competition, thanks to you). It involved so many of us in this frontier world, which only exists if we create it constantly. Thanks mostly for helping stamp the Dream with your spirit. Your presence will be missed, but recorded in the pages of ESP! for all those who follow. Come back sometime and visit us, Dread. You will always be welcome. Still smiling, Raman ------------------------- Dear Brynne, I was sad to hear that Dread has left WorldsAway due to some real world issues. He will be greatly missed and was a tremendous asset to ESP!. I have been most impressed by the paper, and have seen the great contributions which Dread has brought to your paper since its inception. I know he will be missed, and must be a great personal loss to you. I hope an adequate replacement can be found to help you continue with the positive trend the paper has taken. ESP! has truly become the Premier Newspaper in Kymer. I look forward to each and every issue knowing that creativity and originality can always be found with every issue. Your dedication, Dread's, and the entire staff's can be something to be very proud of. Please continue with providing the great paper we have known to love, and don't let the loss of Dread become a burden. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. A Loyal Reader, Brains, Wing Commander Krewe of the Duckolytes ------------------------- Brynne, Heres a pic of Dread I doodled around with; hope you like it... Dread was a wonderful guy. I hope he comes back REALLY soon. Without his encouragement and help I wouldn't be what I am today. Though I still haven't taken his advice to slow down. I'm just a fast person, and no matter how many times he told me to just breathe for a second and calm down, I always went faster. He has helped me a great deal with all my business projects. He helped me start on WATV, it's a shame he probably wont be here to watch it come right off the ground and then skyrocket at the premier. (Date To Be Announced- stay posted to ESP! for details!!) I ask myself: Why does he hafta leave *NOW* of all times?? How in the WORLD am I supposed to get WATV running without his help!? Without his Encouragement and extra work and kindness... It would take an army of people to help me with this now... If it weren't for his encouragment...I could not do this... BUT I CAN!! I CAN do this on my own!! I CAN slow down!! Cause Dread isn't totally gone. For part of him will always be with us... Dot Warner ------------------------- Yes, we have lost a friend - not forever, I hope. His spirit is still with us - and will be until the day his "body" returns. "When you are ready to write, or if you need some ideas, etc. don't hesitate to write to me again, I am here to help, and that alone gives me great pleasure. If you want to write Zooey - you will find all the encouragement you need from me." Dread's words, his answer to the first mail I wrote to ESP! - has that really been more than four months ago? I've been a newbie at that time, liked the idea of writing for this newspaper - and Dread's ideas, his friendship, his encouragement made not just this beginning, but all the following work easy for me. Well, Dread - I'm no good in saying goodbye either - but I wanted to let you know: I will miss you, thanks for everything you've done for me. Wish we had spent some more time together (it's always the same ) and I hope that all the things you've got to do now will be successful. Keep in touch if you can. Your friend -Zooey ------------------------- Dear Brynne, I was sad to learn that the real world has grabbed Dread and snatched him away from ESP!. He has been a pleasure to work with, not only as an editor who appreciates the writer's craft, but also as someone who brought verve, effervescence and a sense of fun to his job, and to ESP! I'll miss him, and I hope he rejoins us soon. Mufasa ------------------------- Farewell Dread and GOOD LUCK! Kymerians, as I mentioned in my section: Aqui estoy yo, this week is not a happy one, Dread, assistant editor of ESP!, is no longer with us. We will miss him very much. He helped me a LOT in getting my club, the Hispaniclytes, up and running. I remember when he asked me to do a small writing about my club, also when he told me that I could write an article weekly in Spanish in the section a Multilingual Phantasus. A while later he surprised me with the notice that we would have our own space in ESP! like the major groups (Duckolytes and Sunrays) called The Hispaniclytes' Corner: "Aqui en Espanol". But this was not all! He helped me a lot in Miss WA too; he offered ESP! as a sponsor and gave me a lot of the prizes for it. And not forgetting that he always suported all the activities that the Hispaniclytes prepared. Dread is an avatar who could not be replaced; he truly is a Dreamscape avatar. We will miss the Dread's Spot which was always fresh and an entertaining to read. He always gave his sincere opinion about all the Kymer happenings and do not favored anyone. I hope some day he will come back, but until then, we have to move on, not forgetting him, but seeing him as an example on how an avatar should be with his/her community and continuing his good work. Dread, in the name of the Hispaniclytes we say not goodbye, but see you soon; maybe we will encounter each other again surfing the net. We all will miss you GOOD LUCK! Hispaniclyte Boricua ------------------------- Thanks to Dot Warner for the wonderful GIF of Dread that is being placed in the Newstand Library with this issue. Before he left, he prepared the updates for the Writers' Competition and finalized all the stories so that they'd be ready for me to place into ESP! So for a few weeks yet, you will see his byline. I share with you an extract from Dread's last mail to me: I left Dread at ESP! headquarters by the fireplace. So my ghost is there; if you hear squeaking floorboards or whatever when holding events you'll know it's me. Be brave and always keep smiling. Dread, Dread, wherever you are, thanks for your incredible support, for your wonderful friendship, for sharing my vision and for helping me move toward its realization. I will look forward to the day when you can return to us. Brynne {!} - From the Editor's Desk - {!} By Acolyte Brynne Cosmocat Joins ESP! Staff ------------------------- It is with great pleasure that I announce that Cosmocat has joined the English ESP! staff as a Columnist. Anyone who reads the forum knows that Cosmocat is known for great wit! I look forward to seeing his articles in future issues! Cosmocat has also volunteered to take on the project of indexing all past issues of ESP! and keeping the index up to date. So look for that to come to a Newstand Library near you soon! Welcome to the team, Cosmocat! ESP! Staff Positions -------------------- We are looking for avatars who would like to become involved in our continued efforts to improve ESP! and keep it alive and fresh. The following positions are all currently available. They are, at this time, voluntary and do not offer token salaries, as ESP! has no income of its own. We hope this will change in the future. If you are interested in becoming a part of a dynamic staff in one of the following positions, please send me email to 71273,373. If any of these positions give you an idea for something which you could uniquely do, please let me know. I'm open to all new ideas! Features Editor to secure stories for the Cover Story and Feature Story sections of ESP!; to cover (or find someone to cover) specific events inworld and write cover or feature stories re same; to work closely with Contributing Editors, Columnists and Reporters by providing information the FE may have that would be good for follow-up stories, etc.; to assist Brynne in the actual editing process of everything submitted. Public Relations Editor ESP! is working with Dot Warner and WATV stations she is bringing to Kymer. We are looking for someone who would work with Dot to obtain the "TV broadcasting schedule" for publication in ESP! each week, to write reviews, to prepare our ad spots, perhaps to put together a small staff who would take turns with broadcasting an "infomercial" of the contents of the current ESP! issue and anything else the person in this position would wish to do to insure the success of the WATV stations and help publicize ESP! inworld. Group Liaison Editor: to work at making contacts with the inworld avatar groups, becoming familiar with all the groups, keeping up on new groups, encouraging the current and new groups to submit to ESP! instead of posting to the forum, or putting things in the library without any public notice; writing about a group, or perhaps a general article that would address the overall activities of several of the groups in the last week, upcoming week, etc. (the "Avatar Groups of Phantasus" section of ESP! would be this editor's responsibility) Events Editor: to encourage event hosts to write reports of their events, and to help them do so if necessary; to write a weekly column of little blurbs of the events going on in the upcoming week; to work closely with the Event Coordinator in maintaining the schedule, providing event info for follow-up by the EC, etc.; plus any other activities the EE would feel necessary to promote events and hosts inworld Advertising Coordinator: to obtain and maintain advertisements for our pages. Contributing Editor (not restricted to one): to write articles for the various sections of ESP!, to encourage avatars to submit articles, etc. and make sure these contributions are in publishable form before being sent to Brynne; to come up with ideas for contests, etc. ESP! can sponsor; any other tasks a CE would like to take on Columnist (not restricted to one) this position is different from Contributing Editor in that the columnist is only responsible for his/her particular column. It also does not need to be a regular weekly column; a minimum of one article every four issues is requested. Does not require as much of a time commitment as a CE. Reporter (not restricted to one) to work with Features Editor, Contributing Editors and Columnists to provide tidbits for their articles; a reporter can also submit his/her own article whenever s/he has items to submit (weddings, divorces, general "gossip", new businesses, etc.). !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Feature Stories ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Comments from Cosmocat - {!} (Topical Issues Twisted and Refined by a Muddle-Brained Feline) By Cosmocat Head Rotation (ouch!) Hmmm... new heads in the vendos this week. I find it *very* interesting that there's a new Bunny_head*, and we didn't even need an update to get it. Let's see, the last update was on April 16th and Easter was on April 7th. Does this mean that the Powers That Be missed having Bunny_Heads in a vendo for Easter by one lousy week? And the would-be-Easter-Eggs were introduced fairly recently, too. Sheesh. I noticed that the new heads vary a lot in their appearance, too. Some look somewhat realistic, while others look like they were scanned from the comic section of the newspaper. I guess they've given up on trying to create a uniform *look* for the Dreamscape, huh? All those weirded out color schemes the patch users wear messed that up anyway. I hope they got permission from Disney to use the name Aristocat, though. Not that I would tell ... I *never* tell. Too bad we don't have striped head spray--that Aristocat_head* would look almost like a tiger head--something I *still* long for occasionally on long Kymer nights. And now, a brief Awards Presentation: The Confusion_To_Newbies_Award goes to ... whoever left the label on the door that reads "Door to Produce Heads". How long do you think it'll take before they figure out that a Kiwi *is* produce? The Ooops_I_Forgot_To_Use_My_Spell-Checker_Award goes to ... the poor individual who misspelled "Ceasar". (I hope it wasn't Tiresias, the blind seer/oracle of ancient Greece. Or is it Teresias? Gee, I forget.) Good thing the *real* Caesar isn't around, or he'd get them with his salad. Of course, since there's no Produce Heads vendo anymore, they're off the hook. And last but not least, the Brilliant_Idea_of_the_Year_Award goes to the person who put the Parrot_head in the vendos. *That* will keep MarvL off FSC's back about documents for at least a week, don't you think? Until next time ... Cosmocat. {!} - Tarot Majik - Unraveling the Knots - {!} By Hierophant SRK, facilitator of the Sunray Majik Guild Do you believe in Majik? "Phred, do you believe in Majik?" Hannah asked. "Sure Hannah. Majik is an important part of my life." "Is it really?" Hannah asked with wide eyes. "Can you do Majik your- self?" "Watch this," Phred said with a sly twinkle in his eye. "Poof," and he disappeared. Hannah said, "Phred, you come down out of that ghost cloud right now. Everyone in Dreamscape can ghost. That's not what I meant." But Phred didn't come down. Instead he ESP'd, "And look at this Hannah. I can project thoughts to you without speaking." "That's very funny Phred," she pouted. "But I meant real Majik." Phred said "Poof", and reappeared in front of her. "Well. That's a matter of personal opinion. I see Majik in everything; in birth and death, and everything in between." "No, no. That's not what I meant. Do you believe in MAJIK?" Hannah asked again, placing so much intensity on the word it sounded like a scream. "So you're not impressed with the Majik of life. Okay. Even beyond the Majik of life, I believe in the Majik of love. Have you ever seen the Majik of appreciation in a person's eye when you were kinder to them than they expected? " "Oh Phred. I mean Majik!" "What do you mean by Majik, Hannah?" "I have a friend who is very sick, and I was wondering if there's anything I can do to make her well." "You can help her in many ways. The most healing thing you can do for her is to love her. But if you want to alter the way her life is unfolding, you are tampering with things you don't fully understand." "Well, you've shown me the Majik of the Tarot. Maybe the Tarot can help me understand how to help her." "Okay, Hannah. How about if we phrase the question like this: How can I understand the role of Majik, so I can learn how to help my friend?" "Okay, Phred. That's a fair question." After they selected the cards, Phred showed Hannah how to lay out the reading. She placed the cards around in the three groups; first the outside card in the lower left corner, then the outside card in the lower right corner, then the card on the top. The rest of the cards built inwards until all eleven cards were placed. Hannah was the first to speak. "Wow, there are some amazing looking cards in this reading. That's a really intimidating one." "I knew your eye would be pulled to that card. It's called the Devil, and it shows a large ugly demonic looking creature, with a naked man and woman chained to his will. That's a very powerful card indeed. This whole reading is very powerful. Look at the card in the 'final outcome' position. It's the Magician card. The Tarot is taking your question about Majik very seriously!" "That's amazing, just like what we were saying before about coin- cidences in the Tarot." Phred said, "I am always amazed at how the Tarot provides just the right images. Now let's start from the beginning. The first card, in the 'question' position, is the ten of Ankhs. It's a perfect card to help you cope with your frustration. You feel that your friend's illness is an unjust interference, and you want to impose your own sense of justice on her life. The ten of Ankhs is about the sense that our lives fit into a higher purpose. We need to have faith that our lives fit in with a plan that's bigger than our own. There are 5 billion people on this planet. If each one of us insists on having our own way, every one will be miserable. The clash of willfully competing plans creates chaos. Harmony in the world and within yourself can only come when you try to get in touch with a bigger plan. Try to respect that larger purpose, by honoring ALL the things that come to you, even if they are unpleasant and uncomfortable." "But it's not my own discomfort I'm upset about," Hannah protested. "Still, it's your will and your order that you want to impose." "But I have to try to help her," Hannah cried out in exasperation. "What kind of effort am I supposed to make?" "The best guide is to pay attention to the way you feel. When your effort is kind and gentle and harmonious, you'll feel love emanating within you and around you. But if you try to willfully defy the laws of the world in order to get your own way, you'll choke off the flow of love. You'll feel needy and self involved." He continued, "Here's another insight that will help you understand working with both the good and bad in your life. In the 'supporting or opposing' position is the Chariot card. That is such a cool card for your question. The Chariot is being pulled by two sphinxes, one white and one black. These two sphinxes symbolize the opposites in life; the good and the bad, comfort and disease, pain and pleasure. The charioteer uses the opposites as a propelling force, to move forward through life. Rather than fighting against the opposites of life, he has harnessed them." "That's a beautiful card, and I agree it looks very powerful. The picture is so convincing I can just feel how much strength it takes to subdue the positive and the negative to work together like that. I wish I could do that." "You can. Love is the great integrator, pulling together opposites. Through love, you'll gradually feel the opposites working together to make your life more vital. If you try to cut off what you consider bad, the opposites fight against you harder and harder." Pausing, Phred looked in Hannah's eyes. "You have to learn to love your friend, in sickness and in health," he said gently. "But I do love her," Hannah protested. "Love means accepting her the way she is, not changing her to suit your own perfect image. Okay. I'm sorry. I know you love her, and you want her to get better. But you are fighting against nature and trying to make her all white instead of accepting the opposites in her life. Let's go on to the next card, in the 'environment' position. That's the yucky Devil card. It certainly is creepy looking, but again it's perfect for this reading. In the Tarot's viewpoint, it means ignoring your sense of values in order to serve your self." "The Devil looks so dark and creepy, and he's got those people im- prisoned. They look so totally helpless. Yuck. That seems a lot more sinister than just ignoring values." "The self is a harsh master, Hannah. Once you start listening to selfish desires, and ignore your own deeper values, it can be a long dark slippery road. And it's especially slippery when you start looking for Majik to help you assert your own wishes, because when you use Majik in that way, in your heart you are competing with God. Then, because you don't want any interference from a higher authority you start tearing God down. As you wall yourself off from a higher plan, you become more and more alone. It's not a pretty process." "Ouch, Phred. I definitely don't want to go down that road. But what can I do? I feel so bad for her. I just need to understand what's going on." "Don't be discouraged Hannah. People have been getting sick and getting well since the beginning of time. Your love for your friend is forcing you to understand things you wouldn't have thought about. As you try to deal with your frustration, you are being asked to grow. Let's see what the rest of the reading says. The three cards in the 'significator' section are, the Knight of Wands, the four of Ankhs, and the four of Wands." "I sense a lot of energy and action in those cards, Phred, a lightness and forward motion." "That's very perceptive, Hannah. The four of Ankhs is a special kind of action. It's the personal commitment to accept that the work of life is inner growth. The card has four parts: you long for a clearer vision of God's plan, you dare to become part of that plan, you understand and trust that plan, and you work within yourself to turn that trust into a deeper wisdom." "Dare to become part of the plan. I feel like there's some advice there for me. I feel it, but I can't completely get it," Hannah sighed. "Yes, it is a beautiful and subtle message. It takes courage to let go of your own willful needs. Daring to submit to a greater plan than your own turns life into a great adventure. When you look at every- thing as a gift, whether you wanted it or not, life becomes a constant source of wonder." "When I look at the man in the Chariot I get the idea that I'm going to need to be very strong to be pulled forward by the opposites." "I'm afraid I didn't say it was easy, Hannah. It's a big challenge. But it leads to a fascination and wonder in life that will more than make up for the effort. The four of Wands card in the 'past and passing' position indicates that in order to appreciate this challenge, you have to give up the illusion that everything in life is going to please you. And in the 'hopes and fears' section, the Knight of Wands indicates that there is action and motion in your choice to move beyond this illusion." "My choice? Hey, wait a minute. I never said I was going to give up my old dreams that everything is going to be fine. I like those dreams. I don't know that I'm ready to let them go." "Well. Look Hannah. The reason we're here having this discussion is because you are getting a rude awakening. You are struggling against your friend's illness. You can either use this as an opportunity to find a new angle of vision in your life, or you can ignore the message and pretend that life will always be just the way you want it." Hannah looked forlorn. "I guess I am getting booted out of my old perspective. I might as well adjust my attitude instead of feeling stuck and helpless. Okay, what about the final outcome?" "That is a series of powerful cards. The 'crown' position is the King of Ankhs. He represents inner strength. Then in the 'immediate future' position is the Emperor. He is a generous compassionate protector. Then there's the 'final outcome' position, the Magician. He turns the frustrating events of life, the wayward energy of the mind, into the power of an upper spiral that transcends the ordinary." "I see what you mean about a powerful reading. Whew! Slow down and tell me how these cards fit into the reading." "Sure. The inner strength of the King of Ankhs means that you are able to maintain your poise in the midst of adversity. You'll be able to keep your clear vision of the people around you. Despite your own pain, you'll see they have needs too. You'll be gentle to them, and make them feel better. By maintaining your own poise, you give a great gift to the people in your life." "That sounds really hard. I don't feel very poised right now." "Yes, Hannah. But you are trying. If you truly want that strength, you'll find it. One of the ways to find poise is by looking at the next card, the Emperor. His generosity and strength continues to shower on you in the midst of even the most upsetting circumstances. It's hard to see generosity in the midst of problems. But no matter how bad a situation is, it could always be much, much worse. Even though the situation feels bad, it may be the most gentle, com- passionate way to get you through a tough situation." "There is still compassion for her, even in the midst of her illness ..." Hannah mused. "That's interesting, Phred. That touches a chord in my heart. If I keep my thoughts very still, that image hovers just on the horizon like an evening star." "Seeing compassion in all of life is one of the best dreams, Hannah. The card in the 'final outcome' position is Magician card. He's the ultimate sorcerer. He transforms all the events, and turmoil, and self involvement of life into the gold of inner strength, love and growth." "Wow. I never thought of Majik like that," Hannah said. "We hear about the ancient alchemists trying to turn lead into gold. That IS true Majik. But for the Tarot, the 'lead' is the daily grind of the self involved mind, and the 'gold' is inner growth that reaches up towards the higher plan." "Wow. So you DO believe in Majik. I see what you mean," Hannah said, as the lightbulbs seemed to be getting brighter. "But why do we need to suffer at all? Why can't everything be easy?" "Wouldn't that be nice? Life does seem to have all kinds of complica- tions. Since we have to live through these complications, it's up to us to get a good attitude. The two 'insight' cards in this reading, the King of Swords, and Justice, offer some interesting tips." "Hmmm. Those two cards are similar. The King of Swords is sitting on a throne holding a sword in his right hand. The Justice card shows a robed woman on a throne holding an Ankh in her right hand. They both look very stern. I'd feel better if they looked a little happier," Hannah said, cracking an ironic smile. "Yes, they are similar looking. And their insights are related to each other. The Justice card represents the Justice of life. 'As you sow, so shall you reap' is the law of Justice. What you do, comes back to you. It's not always obvious. Some people seem to benefit from all kinds of evil, while others try to be good but keep running into brick walls. But that's a false impression, based on a limited understanding of the law. According to the Tarot, we can NEVER get away from the results of our actions. Life goes on, and actions return inevitably, if not in this life, then beyond it." "Why does she look so serious?" "As you can see from all the illness and suffering in the world, Justice can be a stern law. But it shouldn't scare you. You just have to understand it." "I try to do my best, but I have to admit, I don't always believe that I'm going to get any positive results from being good." "Oh no, Hannah. EVERYTHING you do becomes part of who you are. Now let's look at the King of Swords. The swords represent an energy that cuts through the bonds of Justice. The King of Swords sometimes has a heavy hand, but often even in the midst of pain he is helping us push through obstacles. Let me explain. When you are struggling and everything seems difficult and complicated, it's as if you're tangled in a knot, and nothing you do seems to be able to untie it. The King of Swords cuts through that knot. It might feel like a jolt of bad news. But instead of thinking of your difficulty as a gloomy, negative unproductive experience, try to see how the pain is helping you cut through a knot, cutting out the twists and turns and returning you to your straight path." "I don't know Phred. I don't know if I can accept suffering based on such an abstract point of view." "Look, Hannah. You know how I'm always saying that your dreams can lift you and make you free? Well, this is the most powerful dream of all; to see your life as part of a great and beautiful drama, a drama which has a purpose, and which fits in with a higher purpose. Dreaming that dream will fill every moment in your life with Majik. It will connect each moment to every other moment, and connect all your dreams with a greater dream. Every moment and every dream will lead to a great awakening, and you'll start to see how you fit into the Great Dream." {!} - TG's Hatemail No. 10 - {!} by Throbbing Gristle HMS A sad jubilee Yeah. It's that enfant-terrible again, and this is the 10th time I have switched on this computer to write hatemail, which was supposed to be a project for 2 or 3 issues only, but which became self-running while the times and people of Kymer changed. At this moment it is stuck a bit, what a week of changes and few of these evoked anything good. TG has to stay away from Kymer a little bit more, due to financial limitations. Calling CIS in Germany is very expensive as we do not have the benefit of free local calls here. So you can say that every minute you pay your CIS rates demands twice the amount again for the German phone company, which is not give a tribute to online maniacs so far. Many of us had to feel this, did you notice that large invasion of German avatars 2 months ago, and did you notice how many of these are still with us? Same thing happened to the English invasion few weeks later. If CompuServe wants to keep its users online, it should be of major interest for them to try to get better rates for users that stay online for lots of hours. It might be a problem that CIS was not even willing to make this decision for itself so far, so why should the telekom? Honestly, for WA "Super value" is a joke. Anyway, complaining does not bring us any further. The fact is, I won't be inworld as much as I was before, and this makes it hard for this column here to survive, as I cannot collect the information like I did before. SO IT'S UP TO YOU to help me do this is the future. All of you, who gave me "spiritual support" in the past are welcome to give me practical support too. Keep sending me your mails, complaints, ideas and sorrows. Otherwise this might become an empty spot in the ESP as well as for Deutsche ESP! The last weeks were weeks of goodbyes anyway. I guess that this issue will be crammed with farewells to our incomparable features editor Dread, who probably leaves an empty space behind, that cannot be filled. I cannot add anything to this. I guess all will be said already by Brynne. Thank you Dread for having been with us ... and please return. Goodbye also to some other friends who had to leave in the last weeks ... This community reaches as far as our bank accounts do. * * * Looking around the newsstand I saw that Thief & Theft has left us. I won't shed a tear because of this, but then I had to find out that the same material was reprinted in a new paper called K-Pages. They even did not make any efforts to improve or modify the text, it was just a bad copy... in a magazine that gave me the impression that the editors did want to make their contribution to the forum library without finding the time to put the whole thing into a halfway-acceptable form. Look at it yourself and you will see why our editors spend big time of their weekends and evenings producing ESP! for you, or better making it as good as it has become. If you want a 1 hour production (if it took that long), read K-Pages. I sent a letter to the publisher; will be interesting to see if it's published. Oh yes, it was another swissmade imperator ... seems like there is a big call for imperial structures at some places. This reminds me of my words in my last issue here, which surely reached a lot of people, except those that were mentioned to be reached. Seems like the major aim of the Empire still is caring their own structures. Somebody ESPed me this week saying: They are such a bunch of self-centered egomaniacs ... caused by 6 members of the Empire gathered together in the temple-registry to play their title-giving games under the eyes of some poor ghosting newbies who would have liked to register their name in there, impossible though, cause the Empire staff was blocking the locale. Yah yah, our aim is to support and help ... means: Support the empire, not those who might need the support. From my spy avatar I got the following conversation, all names have been shortened or changed, specially because the lines of the conversation would have been far too long for this space here, if the names would have been printed in all their impressive length ... but it shows a lot about the problems we could have ... if we were Empirists at least ...uhm...excuse the thoughts I added inside) EMP Lady: I'm lost here, what's going on? Beep! 1001-1100 Beep! 1111-0100 Beep! 1010-0000 0010-0001 I remember when in the early days I was just an electricity spark. I just wondered inside the computer circuits, bus to bus, bit to bit, byte to byte. Oh yes, I remember it, On-Off, booting the computer, calling programs, all that. Then the upgrade era starts, more RAM, super fast highways and one day a new locale opened, it was called the Modem. It was a travel agency where you can go to another computer without waiting for a diskette to ride on. It was awesome, but unfortunately the upgrade era brings on another thing, crime, yes, bad sparks called viruses who established gangs like the Monkeys, the Devils, the Beasts, and many others. These gangs dedicate their lives to ruin our homes, streets, everything. Many of us got together and form antivirus groups to fight crime, but that is another story. When the Modem began operations our vacations became super vacations. I traveled to many computers in different countries, visit old friends and make new ones. With the crime growing and the old legend became strong again. Everywhere I went I heard someone talking about The Legend. It was a legend of another world, a Worlds Away, it was a Dreamscape called Phantasus. Many of us did not believe that Phantasus really exists, including me. I thought it was just an old legend just to keep hope in our fights against the evil viruses' gangs or just a dumb thing like the legend of Good Times. It was supposed to be a world where everyone can express freely, look however you want, live in peace, make friends, play games, have fun, in one word a paradise. That world was supposed to have been created by the almighty god Morpheus and they said that he continues expanding it every day. Morpheus has three minor gods helping him by maintaining the peace, good, happiness and order in Phantasus, they are called Oracle Vaserius, Oracle Uni and Oracle Teresias. They also talked about the first citizens of that Dreamscape and how some of them who demonstrate a higher state were named Acolytes and were supposed to help all the newbies getting started as avatars in that WorldsAway. One day, back home in my computer, located in Puerto Rico, I received an email by the Modem agency and they tell me I had won a trip in a contest called CompuServe, it was to WAWIN.EXE. I just saw it and told myself "Okay, this is just another junk mail, a trick." But when I went for it they told me it was totally free and that I will wish to never return. I decided to give it a try, what the heck, when my voyage starts I suddenly felt as if I was fading away and changing but I felt no pain, instead I was feeling real good. I faint, and when I woke up I realized I was no longer a spark, I had a human form but I was a woman in the outside and a man in the inside, I was confused. I saw a passage with a bright light at the end, I just walk down the passage and at the end I saw this being seated in front of me with a smile on his face. He looked so peaceful, friendly but grateful at the same time. Suddenly he spoke to me saying: "Hi, what's your name?" "Boricua" I replied. "I am Morpheus.* I was shocked the legends were true, I was face to face with Morpheus. I got my eyes and mouth widely opened just staring at him with surprise, joy, happiness, I do not have enough words to express it. He continued: "Welcome to my Dreamscape, soon a ship will come to take you to Phantasus, my parrot will be your companion in your journey!" I was still staring at him without knowing what to do or to say. He continued: "Do not be afraid, I am your friend, I hope you like your stay in Phantasus and return soon with your friends." I slapped myself on the face to see if I was sleeping but no, it was real so I answered. "I can not believe I am here, I am so happy, so grateful, so, so, so everything, I do not know how to thank you! I will guide all my friends here, I promise it!" Then a wonderful ship arrived, I was amazed at its beauty. When I turned around Morpheus was gone, disappeared. I entered the ship and heard a parrot talking inside the cabin. I went in and saw it, the parrot guides me to my first tokens and talked with me all the way. When I arrived at The Argo I saw a hallway, I walk through it and found a big machine. I looked at it and I does not know how and why I knew how to use it and what for. I change my body to a strong man body, flex for a while and continued walking. The next thing I saw was an ATM, it was the first time I saw one from the outside, next to it was a majestic book with a lot of names in it. I choose and write a name for myself, it was Hispaniclyte Boricua with the idea to be recognized by other Hispanic citizens. Next I found a head vendo machine but none of them was myself. I went to the end of the hallway where I come across a big door, a wonderful door. I was afraid to open it but I took courage and do it. It was the best thing I ever did. The rest of the story, you know it all, fellow avatars. Hi ^{F3} ^{F6} ^{F7}! {!} - How Maggie Moon Arrived in Kymer - {!} by Maggie Moon Fifth Prize Winner I needed a break from my dreary life. My friend Soozie said, "try a vacation, it'll lift your spirits." Gosh, a vacation! Me! I couldn't even fathom the idea. I've never set foot outside my sheltered life, what could I expect? Better yet, what could I lose? Nothing? Yep, a vacation it was! Next question was, where do I go? Hmm ... no brilliant ideas came to mind. I set off to the nearest travel agent. The name was catchy, Phantasy Travel Inc. A bit hesitantly I wandered in, I smiled at the golden haired lady sitting behind the desk. "Excuse me, I am in need of a vacation, could you please suggest a nice place for me?" "Sure Honey" she replied giving me a wide toothy smile. "We only offer travel to one very mysterious and wonderful place" she added. Only one place I thought ... hmm, what kind of a travel agency was this? I started backing towards the door when a loud "WAIT" ripped through me like a gun shot. She resumed her toothy smile and stood up from behind the desk. "Please" she spoke a bit softer now, "Let me show you some photos and true stories of others who have under taken this mystery trip." She was a large woman, over six foot tall would be my guess, she strode across the room gracefully though for a woman of that size. She went to a beautifully colored chest and opened it, she reached inside and brought out beautiful photographs and magazine articles. "Here" she strode towards me and handed them my way. "Take these home with you, look them over . I am sure after you read about it, this will be the most wonderful trip you will ever take. My name is Gazelle, I will see you again." She escorted me towards the door, I gave a small wave good bye and before I knew it I was standing outside. I started down the street and remembered, I forgot to ask about the price. I turned around and looked back at where Phantasy Travel was ... huh ... can't be?? It wasn't there! I was so confused I almost wept, instead I laughed out loud, thinking this has got to be a dream. I went home with the papers and pictures she gave me, all nicely put in a golden binder. I smiled to myself, I didn't remember her putting them in a binder? Hmm, very curious. Oh well, I shrugged as I climbed the stairs to my apartment. I sat on the couch and looked through the material before me. WOW I could not believe my eyes. The photographs were breath taking there were so many types of people. People I could of never imagined, with strange heads all colored differently. There were so many places to see there too, all with a beautiful fountain in the center. I read that this land is known as Phantasus, specifically the island of Kymer. The stories in the pages told of the many people known as Avatars that went there, and how much they loved being a part of the Dreamscape. Dreamscape, yes, it makes sense now. I must be dreaming. There were instructions on how to get to Kymer, with a warning, that I must follow the steps exactly or I would become lost. First, I had to GO AWAY to get my passport . Next I could get my ticket which entitled me to get onboard the Argo. WOW this was unbelievable, did I read it right? After my first trip I could go back as many times as I wanted. Now I know I must be dreaming. I went AWAY for awhile, roaming aimlessly down the streets of my town. I saw Gazelle by a street post, she smiled and waved at me. "Gazelle" I cried, help me I can not find the passport. She said "follow me" It took hours at 14,400 speed to finally reach our final destination. Once there she gave me instructions for using the passport, but she spoke so quickly I'm not sure I understood. I looked at the passport labeled FJWA it was very colorful, I asked "are you sure this is all I need." But alas she was gone. I took the passport with me and went to a town called Worlds Away. I thought she told me it was here that I could get my ticket. Ah ha! There was a street up ahead brightly shining with golden lights. This must be the place! I ran down the street, laughing the entire way. "I'm Here" "I'm Here" I shouted. There was an enormous man at the end of the street, and a long line of people waiting to board the Argo. It looked like he was checking passports. I waited my turn and when I reached him I handed him my passport ... he snorted and bellowed "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THIS TRIP" I cringed at the sight and the sound of him. He was very black, but transparent at the same time, he reminded my of a Black Hole. "Why can't I go" I asked in the sweetest voice I could muster. "BECAUSE I SAID SO" he roared in return. "Well who are you?" "I AM WINDSOCK AND I SAID YOUR PASSPORT IS NOT CORRECT, FIX IT AND GET BACK IN LINE" Oh no, my passport was wrong? Am I in the right place, oh my, I must of gotten lost? I walked slowly down the street, I wept silently, small tears ran down my face. What was I to do. The name Windsock? Geez, that sounded familiar, did Gazelle mention it before? I just couldn't remember. A young child saw me weeping and asked "why are you crying pretty lady?" I told him that I was sad because I could not board the Argo to go to Kymer and that I did not have a ticket nor would Windsock approve one. The child grinned impishly "ah ha, old Windsock got your goat aye? You didn't know that he will not let you aboard?" he hooted. "No" I replied, "why won't he?" The child laughed out loud, "Nobody can board the Argo if they try to go through Windsock, he stops all." "Gosh, I thought this would be much easier, how can I board the Argo?" I replied my voice shaken. "Come on Lady follow me" he jumped as he ran down the next street. The next street turned into a path, lit with multi colored lights, at the end was the shoreline. The Argo was so large that the there was a boarding deck from here too. The child smiled and exclaimed "Here you go M'Lady, onto the Argo" as he held one hand out to guide my way. I thanked him and asked "by the way what is your name?" "Ah, it is secret," he replied, "I am an Oracle in training and cannot say." Hmm ..." very well" I nodded, wondering what he meant. He turned and was gone. Yes, I thought to myself as I boarded the Argo ... It is a most wonderful dream. {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy The Magic of Flowers --------------------- Here it is important to note that some plants can be used in magic either as flowers or as herbs. If you use a plant as an herb, you will use those specific properties which you are freeing by drinking it or burning it, or whatever method you choose. Those properties would be the same for anyone who would use that plant in that way. If you use that same plant for flower magic, you will use it through your heart, in the way its energy reacts to your own energy. That reaction might mean cleanliness to some or devotion to others. Plants which can double up in magic as herbs and as flowers are those which have an important flowering and also strong medicinal properties and are normally used in more ways than as decoration. Lavender is one such plant. Another one is heather and there are many more. Daisy ----- Opinions differ around the origin of the name bellis. Some think it derives from the name of the daughters of King Danao, some from the Latin word bellum which means war, because apparently daisies were used to cure wounds. Another, perhaps more credible version, believes that it comes from the Latin word bellus which means beautiful. The name daisy, instead, comes from the Anglo-Saxon daeges eage which means day's eye because the flowers open their petals in the daytime and close them at night. The daisy is very old in mankind's history. In the Christian legend the daisies were the tears of Mary, and in ancient Greece they were dedicated to Aphrodite. The daisy has always been used as a love oracle, whereby the little petals are taken off one by one, reciting "he loves me, he loves me not." In Germany daisies picked between twelve and one p.m. have magical qualities. Magical Uses - Daisies are everywhere in the spring. They are the most common flower to be found and children will play interminably with them making chains, games and so on. They carry the magic of ordinariness, of everyday life. They bring the feelings of simplicity, clarity, playfulness. It is good to use the daisy when stress has covered up the capacity to enjoy simple, everyday actions. When you are in the middle of a working crisis, or when you have been working too much, and you are so stressed and over-tired that you just can't find the simplicity of your own heart anymore, try this: on your way home from work stop at the florist and buy a bunch of daisies. As soon as you arrive home put them in a vase with abundant water. When all evening activities are over, prepare yourself for magic and place the flowers in front of you, together with the symbols of the elements. Let your eyes rest on the daisies and relax; just looking at the flowers let your mind be empty. While you breathe in and out, imagine the essence of the flower coming inside you with the in-breath and the stress leaving you with the out-breath. Call the powers of the elements. According to the element answering you, you will use the daisy in the appropriate magic. Let us say that the element which answers is air. From the magic of the four elements, you are acquainted with some of these methods of magic. For the element air, you choose to operate a spell. On a clean white paper, write a few words: THROUGH THE DAISY'S POWER A SIMPLE SPELL IS DONE. IN THE WORK I SUCCEED IT IS HARM TO NONE. Place the folded-up spell under the vase and leave it next to your bedside for three nights. On the morning of the third night, all your problems will have disappeared. You will go to work with fresh and renewed energies, and you will again be able to enjoy all the little things which make life worthy of living. Practical Information - The daisy is commonly found anywhere from the seaside to the mountains in fields and pastures. It is also widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. It blooms from March to September. Parts used medicinally are flowers and leaves. They are taken at the beginning of flowering time, in March. They are put to dry in a well-aired place, in the shade and then kept in a container of glass or porcelain. They can work as expectorant, laxative, purgative, tonic. They help heal inflamed swellings and burns. The juice can be used externally for injuries and suppuration. Lavender -------- The name lavandula comes from the Latin lavare, meaning to wash and referring to the use of the flower in bath water for scenting. In ancient Rome lavender was dedicated to the goddess Vesta, and her sacred virgins, the vestals, adorned their hair with it during the ceremonies. From this virginal tradition of the plant, the custom of scenting brides' beds and clothes with lavender has remained, so that lavender can soothe their fears in the first night of marriage. Lavender is also said to be one of the herbs which witches used to throw in the fire at midsummer night, as offering to theirs Gods. Magical Uses - Lavender works for freshness and cleanliness and with the feelings of honesty and directness. It has many uses in magic, both as herb and as a flower. As a flower, lavender is miraculous when used in cases of unresolved guilt. This is the case when you find that in your emotional connection with the world there is a feeling of it "not being quite right". When no matter what confirmations of love you receive from people and situations, you always feel somewhere ill at ease. The guilt is blackening your perception of yourself and of the world. It might be that a particular event precipitates the awareness of this situation. Perhaps you have just obtained a break-through in your career - you should be happy; it was what you had been struggling for a long time, but still you feel uncomfortable. Perhaps you have just met a splendid person who seems to be very well inclined towards you, and you, even recognizing the good intentions of that person, can't shake off the feeling of suspicion. This is a very good opportunity to use lavender. Lavender will reach your heart and act on it directly, in the emotional sphere, washing away all dark shadows. The flowers bloom in summer; you should find a field of lavender, cut a big bunch and prepare this magic oil from them which you will be able to use when the need arises. Cut the flowers during a full moon night. Take the flowers home, and in the morning prepare the oil by putting a generous handful of the fresh flowers and half a liter of olive oil into a glass jar. Put the jar under the sun and leave it for a few days. Under the jar you will write this spell: BY THE VIRTUE OF LAVENDER AND THE VIRTUE OF THE SUN, AS THE MOON GOES, SO WILL MY SINS. Filter the liquid and put it away in an hermetically sealed bottle, until you need it. Practical Information - Lavender grows on stony and gravelly grounds. It is widely cultivated and often wild. It flowers from July to September. Parts used medicinally are the flowers. They are gathered at the beginning of flowering time, in June-July. They are put to dry in bunches in the shade; when they are well dried the flowers are separated from the rest of the plant. They are kept in glass containers away from the light. There are many uses for this lovely plant. Taken externally the flowers purify the skin and stimulate the superficial circulation, particularly the scalp's. It is also useful in purifying the breath and the mouth. A handful of flowers in the bath water makes it tonic and purifying. Internally lavender is diuretic, stimulant, tonic, sedative. Good for headache, fainting and dizziness. Blessed * Be !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Kymer-conomics ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - July Prices To Date, - {!} Staying A-Head, Patchwork Pearls, and Tantalizing TidBits By Mufasa, Financial Editor July Prices To Date ------------------- Although the Duckolyte Benefit Auction, normally held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. WAT, was cancelled this week, and Clover's Collectibles held a one-ring, rather than the typical two-ring auction, there was activity aplenty in the auction market this week. While we do not endorse any particular auction house, kudos are definitely due Happy Little Trees for his outstanding maiden performance as an auctioneer on Saturday, July 13. He overcame the predictable glitches,was thoroughly enter- taining, thoroughly professional, and managed to secure high prices for his consignors, despite a generally depressed auction market. Following are the .gifs which accompany this column: 1) MISC7B.GIF - Snowballs, flowers, ferns, etc. 2) HEDPNT7B.GIF -Heads and body paint 3) CHORN7B.GIF - Chests and ornaments 4) FOODTD7B.GIF- Teddies, food items, body paint. We've been asked how to use the charts. While there is no right way, here's how EconoLion does it: 1) Get out the charts for the previous week and compare average prices for each classification of item. If the average price has gone up more than 5% this week, circle it in black; if it has dropped more than 5%, circle it in red; if it has not risen or dropped more than 5%, circle it in green. This gives you the general price trend. 2) Now, look at the items in which you are especially interested. If the high is greater than the previous week, circle it in black; if it is lower, circle it in red; if it is unchanged, circle it in green. This provides a clue to whether the price can be expected to rise or fall in the coming week. NOTE: If the high price is 20% or more greater than the second highest price, take the average of the two prices and write it in the margin. 3) Repeat step 2 pertaining to the low prices for the items that interest you. Generally, pay no more than 125% of the high in a rising market, and pay no more than 90% of the low in a falling market, if it is probable that you will want to sell the item within four weeks. Staying A-Head -------------- Heads are a matter of personal taste, of course, but my verdict on the heads released on July 18 is that the animal heads are above average to excellent, and the human heads leave much to be desired. Many of you own heads which have now become rare, but don't consign them or trade them too quickly. Give the new avatars who will enter Kymer between now and the end of July a chance to accumulate tokens, get turfs, and shop the vendos, and give the auction market time to recover. Plan to hold those newly rare heads until at least mid-September to realize good returns. For every rule, there is an exception. Here it is: If you are fortunate enough to win one of those potato chip bags within the next four weeks, sell or consign while those chips are fresh and interest is high! The same goes for those bright new red space chests. Beds and divans of roses are the new status items among rich avatars. If you are the proud owner of one to five rose heads, hold for three months, then plan to cash in on the trend. If you own more than five rose heads and want to build your own bed or divan of roses, now is the time to prowl the market and buy what you need at a discount price. Patchwork Pearls ----------------- We knew it would happen soon--we lost our paint patch! The rationalization put forward by FSC minions is that the turf sprays overloaded the server and caused crashes. Bosh! Crashes have been a problem since the beginning of June, when school's end created a rush of new avatars. However, some smart aveys are smiling, because they know that all heads painted with turf or body paint using that patch are now rare-painted. If your patchwork heads are at all attractive, expect them to sell for a premium during the coming months. Hold until mid-September, then market them, not only as attractive heads, but as interesting bits of Kymer history! The smartest avatars of all may be the ones who pound on the door of a certain head shop, buying as much as they can afford. The proprietor of that famous head shop invented a program which painted heads in exciting color and pattern combinations. Many of those heads are very attractive, some are beautiful, all are unusual. These are the rarest of the rare. Buy, wear, enjoy, hold--and expect to sell for a whopping ROI in three to six months! But what if another paint patch is invented? That is an excellent question, but keep this in mind: the original hole in the software has been closed, so any paint patch which is produced later will be different. Paints, like heads and items, can be expected to cycle out of vendos. If you're liquid, and you're able to take a risk for potentially great returns, don't delay--visit that head shop before stock is exhausted and the doors are closed! Tantalizing Tidbits ------------------- Last week, we promised the real deal on the private auction of beta heads held at Clover's Collectibles on Saturday, July 13. Pride members sent out newly-created alternate avatars last weekend, questioning previously-unknown avatars who disported themselves in rare beta heads. We also asked some official Kymer minions some very interesting questions! This event lasted less than two hours, and was attended by approxi- mately fifty avatars, who bid in small amounts, small increments of 50 to 75 tokens being typical. An interesting lot was the Sema head purchased by Mahadevi for 1500 tokens, which required more than an hour to auction off. When the high bidders unghosted to complete their purchases, it was noticed that some had difficulty using English, and most were newbies, like A1, using the default clothes and head. On Sunday and throughout the week, Pride members prowled the locales of Kymer and made a special effort to be friendly to previously- unknown avatars wearing beta heads. They were asked some very basic questions, among them, "Where are the turfs located?", "Where are the vendos?", "When was this head in the vendo?", "Can I get different clothes?", "How do I change my clothes?". As we had heard from some present at the event or privy to it, communication in English was often somewhat difficult. Hypothesis: This event was held for Fujitsu senior management in order to familiarize them with WorldsAway. Conclusions: It's another case of typical corporados behaving in typical corporado fashion. The paying customers who are interested in and want these heads were not given access to them. Instead, these heads were wasted on people who, for the most part, couldn't care less. Clover, an excellent customer, was put in a horrible position by Candice, who made arrangements for this auction in a public locale, in the sight and hearing of many avatars, and also by FSC, because Clover not only received low commissions on the low bids, but has been targeted by angry avatars inworld. Remember: Tuesday, July 23, at 3:00 pm WAT at Turf: BOXES See Ya There! {!} - 2nd Quick Draw Competition - {!} By Number 6 (No 6, Glyn 6) Background : Whilst there are a number of in world events, I wanted to introduce a number of fun topics for members to enjoy. QD is the first of such ideas. The first competition was held in June, and saw Utopia, rather convincingly, beat Dolan in the final. However, they did not stop there. They wished to continue, and the bullets continued to fly for some time after! It was clear at the first competition that many boyhood memories of "cops and robbers" or "cowboys and indians" games had been re-kindled to many who were there, as everyone got rather trigger happy after a while! However, not to be outdone, the girls proved themselves to be quite proficient with a gun, as the event finished with the host being shot (accidentally, I might add) by his assistant! As with all new events, the turnout was quite small and I set about gathering E-Mail addresses whenever I could. For the July competition, I send 250 invites, and the number of members attending increased. Again, there were a number of trigger happy individuals, and bullets were flying everywhere! The July competition saw Freud defeat Zorglub Ice, followed by what is fast becoming a free for all shootout at the end! I intend to hold another QD competition at the end of July rather than wait until next month. As with previous competitions, it will be held at the turf DeadWood, and will be at 4pm WAT on Saturday 27 July. Both entrants and spectators are welcome. I hope to have windows software completed by the next competition which will enable me to cope easily with larger numbers and speed along the event. The Rules: There is an Entry Fee of 50 Tokens. The pot is divided up 2/3 to the winner and 1/3 to the runner up. No amount is retained by the host. All entries are taken at the time of the competition, and the event is run on a knockout basis. Pairings are made randomly. All rounds are the best of 5 "draws" except the final which is best of 7. Quite simply, competitors type BANG and press enter when the host shouts DRAW. The first to appear on screen is the winner! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Hispaniclytes' Corner: "Aqui en Espanol" ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Aqui estoy yo! - {!} por Hispaniclyte Boricua Esta semana es una muy triste es nuestra primera semana sin Dread en el staff de ESP! Los Hispaniclytes le deseamos suerte en todo lo que se proponga y que siga adelante con el buen trabajo. GOOD LUCK Dread! We will miss you! Y esa no fue toda la tristeza que sentimos, tambien tuvimos otra triste despedida dentro del club. Hispaniclyte Gorgon tambien dejo Kymer, le deseamos SUERTE y esperamos su regreso dentro de 6 meses. Vean la foto de su despedida en Dreamscape Snaps. Pero ademas de eso han habido nuevos cambios en WA ahora tenemos dos clases de cabezas nuevas: 1)las nuevas cabezas de NUYU, y 2)las nuevas cabezas "rare" que antes eran comunes. Como ya sabran se fue completa la maquina de cabezas de comida, ademas de que se fueron cabezas como Woman, Tape, Iron, Cyborg y Doris. Pero en su lugar vinieron nuevas cabezas: Lion, Lioness, Dragon, Clay, Diskette, Box, T-Rex, Aristocat, Bunny, Monkey y otras mas. Estoy orgulloso de ser uno de los ultimos avatars a los que los Oracles botaron ya que nos andabamos escondiendo de ellos. Pero Venus Cleopatra fue mas lista aun, ya que ella dejo su avatar adentro y cuando entro a WA estaba dentro de NUYU y fue una de las primeras en ver las cabezas, de hecho llego a ver cuando las estaban poniendo en los vendos (y me filtraba la información via ESP). Ahora tenemos nuevas cabezas para disfrutar. Pero no ha sido todo lo nuevo, tambien me encontre con un "update" a mis files de WA que en verdad no vi que mejoraran nada. El bug del ESP sigue ahi, no vi ningun nuevo locale, no vi ningun teletransportador nuevo, etc.. Los Acolytes dijeron que lo nuevo era un nuevo camino en el Promenade el cual nunca veremos ya que no podemos regresar a este y algo de unos "codes fixes", que quien sabe lo que sera eso. No se pierdan la nueva y mejorada Hispaniclytes homepage, ahora puedes escribirles a algunos de los miembros desde esta, ademas de nuevos links que se le a¤adieron: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Ivan_Boricua Recuerden usar Netscape o MS Internet Explorer (Mosaic sucks). Esta semana les traigo un poema: La Sonrisa Una sonrisa no cuesta nada pero vale mucho. No empobrece a quien la da y enriquece a quien la recibe. Dura solo un instante y perdura en el recuerdo eternamente. Es la senal externa de la amistad profunda. Nadie hay tan rico que pueda vivir sin ella, y nadie tan pobre que no la merezca. Una sonrisa alivia el cansancio, renueva las fuerzas y es consuelo en la tristeza. Una sonrisa tiene valor desde el momento en que se da. Si crees que a ti la sonrisa no te importa nada, se generoso y da una de las tuyas, porque nadie tiene tanta necesidad de una sonrisa como quien no sabe sonreir. {!} - Announcements - {!} by Hispaniclyte Boricua Remember to check out the new and improved Hispaniclyte homepage, now you can meet and email some of our members, and many links have been added: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Ivan_Boricua Best viewed with Netscape or MS Internet Explorer, if you use Mosaic (BTW which sucks) you will not be seeing the real thing. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Just Ducky ! ! sponsored by ! ! The Krewe of the Duckolytes ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Duckolyte Trivia Master - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects On Sunday, July 14, Brains, Wing Commander of the Krewe of the Duckolytes, hosted another fast, fun game of Duckolyte TriviaMaster in the turf Duck Hunt. The theme of the game was Duck Soup, and this was the first time that the Duckolytes have used Wert P. Gumby's new trivia program. Mrs. Wert wrote the questions for the game. Although there were a few technical glitches at the beginning of the game, the ghosts in attendance enthusiastically responded to Brains's able hosting of the game, and enjoyed the esoteric questions he had put together for the occasion. Following were the winners: 1st -Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing 2nd -Jayvee 3rd -Sir Launce 4th -Askani, Duckolyte Sr. Wing, Cosmocat, Mufasa, Odo the Changling, Sunray Texas Snowflake. Note that four-way tie for fourth place! In order to make victory all the sweeter, the Wing Commander has also sweetened the fruits of victory. Following are the weekly game prizes: 1st Place: 500 Tokens, Rare Bronze Rose Head, rare Bronze body spray, Heart Chest, snowball 2nd Place: 250 Tokens, Rare Steel Lacey Head, rare Steel body spray, Heart Chest, snowball 3rd Place: 125 Tokens, Walnut Head, valentine, Heart Chest 4th Place: Fern The monthly prizes are always special including a specially-engraved head from the Oracles. The monthly champion is determined by weekly winners using the following point system: 1st Place = 5 Points 2nd Place = 3 Points 3rd Place = 2 Points 4th Place = 1 Point The monthly leaders are as follows: Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing. . . . 8 points Acolyte Hindemith . . . . . . . 5 points Jayvee. . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 points Sir Launce. . . . . . . . . . . 2 points Julie S.. . . . . . . . . . . . 2 points Duckolyte Biker Steve . . . . . 1 point Askani, Duckolyte Sr. Wing. . . 1 point Cosmocat. . . . . . . . . . . . 1 point Mufasa. . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 point Odo the Changling . . . . . . . 1 point Sunray Texas Snowflake. . . . . 1 point It is still possible for the motivated and lucky to win a major prize. The recent scoring change and the need to reduce ties has totally changed the game. It is no longer machine- or node-dependent and the questions are so esoteric that stellar intuition, as well as detailed recall, are rewarded. Come and find out! {!} - Duckolyte Ghost Racing - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects Because the rare Christmas prizes are attracting so much interest, July ghost racing competition really heated up on Sunday, July 14. Hope to see you all next Friday, July 25th, at 5:00 PM WAT. The location is turf Sunray Auction. (In the woods above the Tolt River, John MacDonald Park, Carnation, Washington, USA, 12 July 1996) by a friend of the Sunray Knights I sat deep in the wood. No rushing creek. No stirring wind. Only the sound that silence makes when it sits thick within your ears. I waited for my mind to become truly quiet; for even words that are never spoken can be a disturbing racket. Finally, it came: That moment when nothing else matters, but to be ALIVE! Alive at this moment, in this place, with only nature pumping through your veins. It didn't last, though--it never does. The wind stirred. The cedars creaked. Birds chirped. And a plane flew over and carried me back home. But that instant... it will live in my soul forever, singing its sweet silence, calling me, forever, to return. {!} - The Myth Guild: Looking Back ... To Move Forward - {!} by Sunray Fawn From the very outset, there has been a camaraderie and unity between those who joined the Mythology guild. I believe this unity was born on the wings of love. It is the love in the hearts of each one of us for this dream we know and share. As Sunray Launce says at the end of every email, "I hope this Dream never dies." With the teamwork we have seen within our guild, it will surely never die. Through our humble efforts to keep going with this huge undertaking, we are discovering the Unknown together; putting our time, money and hearts on the frontline to create another world. In this effort, we are creating our own history and our own Mythology. To be creative is an act of courage! When people can speak their minds and share their ideas in safety and trust, anything is possible. By creating myths or stories that use the imagery of our private thoughts, we discover -amazingly- that we have tapped into the collective Mind where what we say means MORE to others. In this way, we touch one another on a deeper level...a level, perhaps, where the soul is journeying...which is traditionally what Mythology is all about. Cyberspace allows us to reach each other there, in this realm where Myths are born. I suppose this means we don't really have to create a Myth; it is a living thing that is carried within each one of us...as is the Dreamscape. When it is time, we will have created a composite Myth that combines parts of all the writings we received, an awesome task that will take a great deal of vision. We want to thank Acolyte Sunray Indigo, for it was her idea to start this guild and her vision that knew how Myths inspire the purpose and direction of a dream. It seems that some relationships in one's life are truly Mythic; they take you beyond the horizons of your own mind, into realms you have not yet explored. Indigo has this effect on people and, in this sense, she is Mythic. She can inspire and ignite the mystic passion in other souls just by the fire of her own spirit. No traditional leadership is needed with someone of this caliber. Just the magnetism of the light and love within her...the priceless ingredient of a true leader. We also want to thank our beloved Oracle Uni, a living Myth in her own right and a very real and talented woman who inspires hope and courage in those she touches. I know this because I have felt it. It is my belief that she is a woman living a Mythic role in Cyberspace to share her true inner gifts of wisdom and love. The Myth Guild will be creating a theatrical performance of ONE Sunray Creation Myth. We will be calling for actors once it is scripted and will keep you posted here and in the Forum in regard to auditions and other aspects of this production. {!} - The Knights of Kymer Poetry & Storytelling Guild Update - {!} by Sunray Kethrey The Knights of Kymer Poetry and Storytelling Guild would like to thank Usagi, Sean, Yumi, Squirrel, SunRay Aquila, Baby Blue Eyes, New Spider, Princess Toadstool, SunRay Knight Zooey, SunRay Fawn and Radha for joining us at last Wednesday's Poetry Pantry event. Letters to the Editor ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hail and well met friends! I must start by commending all the ESP! staff and contributors (especially Witchy, Queen of the Dark Side - I think the column is great!). In my humble opinion, ESP! not only provides a great read it also serves the WA community as a whole with its letters, happenings and events schedules etc. (That should guarantee this letter's pub- lication ). Seriously though, the reason that I write this tirade all stems from reading issue 15 of ESP! I have been reading all the letters and experiences of Avatars who have had an opinion or grievance toward a 'group' or 'organisation' in WA (Such as letters from Throbbing Gristle, 502 Duckolyte Wing and Darkwolf Fenrier). I was especially moved by the story written by Throbbing Gristle regarding a Lady known only as Queen V and her first encounters within the Dreamscape. Firstly I must confess my naivete in this area. I could not believe that this behaviour is practised by certain group members and no doubt actively encouraged by others. Having never been accosted by any such individuals and being a member of one such organisation I was incredulous that this behavioural problem exists amongst members (especially members of the group to which I am currently associated with). Recently, when I have been in the Dreamscape and speaking to other Avatars, it has become increasingly apparent that some harbor attitudes ranging from vague suspicion to downright fear regarding some groups. This is what saddens me the most. Are the role of these groups not to enhance the WA experience for everyone?. Is the main principle of WA not to have fun and enjoy your time as your Avatar persona? It would seem that some join certain groups merely for the title and the prestige associated with it. The reason that I joined my group was that their objectives were very similar to my own. It was mainly my wish to help others in whatever form was appropriate that caused me to enlist. I felt that the title the group possessed would serve only to help others instantly recognise my willingness to help - not for reasons of vanity or because it sounded 'impressive'. Having said that however, please try not to form an opinion on someone purely based on their title - speak with them first to see if your fears are justified. Some of the duties within certain groups also need to be seriously reconsidered. Using your second Avatar to gain the trust of suspected thieves for instance. What sort of community is this kind of action going to produce? Imparting moral judgements upon others, people being misrepresented due to the colour of their Avatar's clothes and accusing others of misdeeds with little or no evidence. Surely these type of 'duties' are unnecessary to any group. I acknowledge that some crime exists in Kymer (as I helped out a victim of such crime recently) which is a great pity. In tackling crime I shall help in a manner that I find is suitable - and not resort to spying on others or branding them thieves without just cause. If such unacceptable duties become mandatory within my group I shall be seriously reconsidering my membership. I feel that I have tried to fulfill my duties during the little time that I have spent within WA (what with being a relative newbie ). Please do not misunderstand me here - I recognise the fact that you need not join a group to be helpful, polite and generally good. Some of the kindest and well mannered individuals I have met have not been members of group as far as I know (people like Wabewalker, Ultraviolet and more recently Bucky - I think that Espresso has gone cold ). If you have encountered me during your time within WA and I have spoken with you then I hope your initial opinion has been a favourable one and not influenced by my 'title'. I feel that in this case an Avatar's actions and manner speak far louder than any 'title' that they may possess. If I have given you the wrong impression, then I take this opportunity to offer my most humble apologies and I hope there is still time for me to redeem myself in your eyes. Should you wish to discuss any of the matters I have raised in my above diatribe then I would be more than happy to discuss it via E-Mail or within the Dreamscape. Safe journey on your path. Kyle (Title withheld by request ). Editor's reply: Thank you very much, Kyle, for your kind comments about ESP! And thank you also for sharing your thoughts about the nature of the WA groups! Brynne, Just a quick note to let you know how superior ESP! is to the Clarion now. I think what you did with the head rotation announcement was a nice touch, and just one of the many small differences that prove there is a difference. Sorry to hear about the loss of Dread. I know he will be hard to replace. Keep up the good work. Brains Editor's Reply: Thanks for your comments, Brains! You have been one of our most ardent supporters and the ESP! staff and I are most grateful! Dread is irreplaceable. Someone else may be able to do the job, true; but Dread is unique and there will never be another like him. See our special section at the beginning of this issue and thank you for contributing to our memorial for Dread. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
