I was on duty inworld and happened to wander over to Meditation Park. As I was standing in the snow, a newbie entered the locale. The newbie asked a question, which I answered, and then we got to talking about publications, etc. He told me that he enjoyed writing and, since he had only been inworld for a couple of days, I asked him if he would be interested in writing something from the perspective of a newbie for my brand new publication, scheduled to make its appearance the next day. He said he would think about it and asked when my deadline was. We talked for a while longer and then I got paged to go somewhere and had to leave. After getting off my second duty shift that night, I checked my email box again, and there, to my surprise, was an article from the newbie I'd met in the Park that afternoon. I was delighted to publish his first article ... This newbie became ESP!'s first staff member besides myself. Yes, that newbie was Dread, who was first Features Editor and then became my right hand as Assistant Editor. Without Dread, ESP! would not be the publication it is today. He was the force behind our recent Writers' Competition and devoted an enormous amount of time in advertising it, collecting the stories, and preparing all the entries for the Judges' review. Dread has put so much time and effort into ESP! and has been my primary support. He's been there for me to bounce off ideas; he's provided valuable input and food for thought; he's written some excellent articles for ESP! Over the last twenty weeks, Dread and I have built up a wonderful working relationship and we've been a great team. It is with deep regret that I must announce that I've had to accept Dread's resignation from ESP! For WW reasons, Dread will be leaving Kymer shortly. There are inadequate words to describe my appreciation for Dread's work on ESP! and the assistance he has provided to me to bring ESP! to where it is today. His presence inworld and on the ESP! staff will be sorely missed. Dream well, my friend, wherever your journey takes you. {!} - Dread's Spot - {!} by Dread It's funny how some people turn on their computer and it says *hello, how are you today.* They realize that real people are on the other end and what is said and done has an effect on others and they themselves can be affected. Some make many friends and some form unexpected relationships; some wander aimlessly; some treat it as a hobby and some let loose their cruelty on others. There is a language barrier. The timing of events, too, would seem to discriminate against Europeans. To be at Clover's, Pinkie & The Brains, Miss WA 1996, and most popular events requires that Europeans log on at two and three in the morning. These are the two main problems that only we can sort out for ourselves. Awareness of this will hopefully encourage some hosts to hold events earlier; certainly anything later than 6:00 p.m. WAT excludes most Europeans. There is no way to solve the time zone problem but the Scheduling Group could take a more active role in shaping the weekly schedule rather than just making a list of events and calling it the law. It's fine setting something up but you can influence the dreamscape by using the full potential. At present the ESP! schedule is in my opinion the most comprehensive and best maintained in Kymer. As for the language barrier, well it would be pathetic to assume that English will conquer the world in our lifetimes. True, already you can meet the Hispaniclytes to learn Spanish and even become an honorary member, and German lessons seem to be all the rage, so you can see a move to breach the language barrier already. We do share most other things though. Since my mention of patches last week, about four or five have come on the scene. Seems as soon as something like this pops up the Europeans, Germans and Americans are all using it; well at least we get our priorities right Oracle Uni was hanging around elevator 1 on Saturday around 9:10 p.m. WAT, me being one of the twenty ghosts. Someone asked if the patches were causing problems with the server and the reply was that they were. Uh?? Okay I'll defer on the grounds of ignorance, but I guess it proves that everyone uses their patches at the same time at the weekend -- Crasshhhhh!! What really gets me are people who say *Ok I will ghost now for someone else blah blah blah ...* and the rest of us in the cloud wishing they would just do it without the grand exit. The Newsstand library 3 in the forum is the melting pot for all the Kymer publications which reflect the evolvement and culture of the dreamscape. You may remember the first published German feature articles in ESP! issue 4. It was an idea we had for a multilingual Phantasus. That same week we saw Der Traumbote sprout and we knew we'd been right in our foresight. From there German ESP! grew which also publishes the group columns. It is a step in the right direction and it's easy to see how ESP! is working to bridge the communication gap between groups and languages. Let me take you back to a time when one newspaper was the only voice in Kymer: the Clarion. These editions are a record of the dreamscape and that is exactly what a periodical is in definition; it contains news and opinions of topical events, feature articles and usually advertising an notices. It informs and entertains. The Clarion did well to cater everyone's needs but covering the excitement in Kymer seemed to get obscured by people telling us that the good old days are gone forever, that nothing can match Club Caribe, that we have somehow arrived in Kymer too late. That was the message I got when I first went *away* -- poppycock! Some weeks ago we did a random comparison for content of several issues and the statistics showed us that ESP! was on the right track. I am going to show you the table as a matter of interest and means nothing else other than to give you perspective. Clarion still gets more downloads than ESP! but just from these figures, it's clear that English ESP! definitely has a well rounded focus (German ESP! is not included in the stats). ESP! Clarion Total Articles/Letters/Poems 36 29 ---------------------------------------------------- Editor written 2 5 Avatar written 18 6 Forum reposts 0 1 Email reprint 0 1 Appeared in prior Clarion 2 Appeared in prior ESP! 1 Submitted to both pubs. 15 15 The appearance of other publications were the sparks that chipped off the excitement that we all felt inworld at turfs and the added effort we put into turning the dreamscape into a very kinetic lifescape. *Look at Theft & Thief, a very small publication but nonetheless a part of Kymer's chronology simply because of the subject matter.* I wrote the above statement in my article for Der Traumbote about the publications in Kymer. Since then Theft & Thief was incorporated into the first Empire publication and a new thieves fan club emerged fostering anti-acolyte sentiment, much to the embarrassment of the Empire publisher it has to be said. Throbbing Gristle had already made her views clear about the Empire, and it was at this time that TG and I received threatening letters from Theft & Thief. Considering this, Brynne and I decided that since ESP! had been dragged into the myre, it was a good opportunity to look at what was going on and report it, TG handles this well, and my view is that to stir interest in a publication it needs to be involved or caught up somehow. TG is controversial but sticks to her guns. When people shout, it brings the paper to life. Much more than a schedule of events and copies of forum posts, these new newspapers offer a fresh view. At ESP! we've worked hard to make it the best produced publication. Some of the best writers in Kymer contribute as well as those who would otherwise have no aspirations to write but wish to participate. The message is simple -- *It is your soapbox.* We do not consider ESP! in competition with anyone as far as the download figures go because there is room for us all. We know that a single newspaper is a disastrous building block for a tower of Babel and that a diversity of individual publications is essential. But one thing is certain in my mind: it's the need for a common media that we can all share so that we don't find ourselves segregated by language barriers that have as yet have remained obstacles in the waking world. So what was the single most important development? Well, as silly as it may sound, it was FSC's recognition of us, the un-Clarions. Until turfs, FSC seemed to only recognize the Clarion as the official Kymer publication, although it will not declare that it is official. This all changed when ESP! received advance media notification from the Oracles about turfs. This in itself was a major development and we knew then that we were being given equal consideration. So now that we have an open press, where will it lead? Do we carry on evolving into something that's destined or do we shape it for our benefit right now? Well these are issues that Brynne and I have discussed in detail. Offering all groups and individuals a voice is the most sensible building block and ESP! strives to accomplish that task. It is the essence of our aims. Without a group coordinator, we decided to give a brief outline of the groups of Kymer under the NewbieNews section header. Building group contacts in this way made sense and kept the group list current. It is a point of note that in publishing many of the group outlines, some groups didn't reply at all. The following tables then, give ample introduction to each group and how easy or hard it is to communicate with them. --Issue 7: Knights of Kymer - Hispaniclytes - Hippies --issue 8: Alienytes, Vegolytes - Darkolytes - Marmilytes --issue 9: Gods of Goodness. --issue 10: Sharkolytes --issue 11: Duckolytes --issue 12: none --issue 13: none --issue 14: The Empire --issue 15: none --issue 16: Sappholytes - Normalas - Bratolytes Groups that did not respond: \\\ Astrolytes /// No one knew how to contact the leader Insider Astrolyte. I guess he didn't. \\\ Echolytes /// Met in Meditation Park but Echo decided not to publish an outline until he had more members, I guess he just forgot as he was excited at the idea. \\\ Foxolytes /// Did not reply. \\\ Helpolytes /// Probably the most unhelpful group I came across. Groups that were not approached: Airheadolytes Black Mystics Coolytes Frogolytes Golden Knights Golden Sorceresses Inconsistent Anarchists Kymer Guardians Mages Musolytes Vendolytes The event I liked most this week was the Night of Spanish Dreams held by the Hispaniclytes which went well. Ghosts at the start were 12 and 22 towards the midway point and door prizes were given out at the end of every poem that was read in both Spanish and English. It was thought earlier in the week that the event might have to be cancelled due to Hurricane Bertha heading towards Puerto Rico to seek out the Hispaniclyte Boricua but it flew past the island. Think it was in Virginia yesterday? I do remember hurricane Charlie a few years back. My brother slept through it and in the morning when we were going to work, we saw all the lopped trees and lots of policeman. My brother said to me, *Whoever cut all these trees down last night is gonna pay for it when they catch him, I'll tell ya that much.* In issue 12 I told how I was kidnapped by the moon queen and traversed the Cosmos to finally arrive in Kymer. I have grown wiser during my stay and have learned much that will prepare me in other worlds. My journey back home is governed by destiny and I know that there will be many more tests yet before I land on my grandfather's balcony once more to watch the stars, this time I will see what he saw, as I will have been among the stars and I will have my own stories to tell. There is a new patch, one that will take me to the sun using the methods I described last week and from where I can hope to find my way. My sword was lost yet I didn't need it here, but I will carry Dread's severed head in my pocket for always to remember all my friends and to prove to all worlds that I am the greatest adventurer of all time. As I tie my boots and prepare to leave, all that remains is to say goodbye and that is very hard to do. This is the twentieth and last Dread's Spot and I have enjoyed writing all of them. ESP! has been a great challenge and when you talk of challenge the word Dreamscape comes to mind. Enjoy the dreamscape -- It is what you make it! Keep Smiling -- Dread, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Cover Story ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Heads Up! - {!} By Acolyte Brynne On Thursday, July 18, Oracle Vaserius and Oracle Teresias will be closing NuYu at 3:00 p.m. WAT and will reopen it at 5:00 p.m. During the two hours it is closed, the Temple Stewards will be rotating head stock. We have been informed that at least one head in each of the seven vendos will be replaced by another head and one entire vendroid will be emptied of its current heads and restocked with nine heads. So which of the heads will be gone come Thursday? What guidelines are the Temple Stewards using to make this determination? Your guess is as good as mine! I have no inside information on this, regardless of what you may think. Just out of speculation, let's look at the NuYu heads currently avail- able and take a wild guess as to which may disappear come Thursday: Female Heads #1 (* colorable) Diana* 220T Don't rely upon my speculation Female* 200T because my guess is as good as Woman* 210T yours. But I think the Female Roberta* 240T head will disappear because it Female Hippie* 230T has become so popular for males Flapper* 210T and females alike and is one of Wendy* 215T the most versatile heads: Doris* 220T changing its colors can make it Heroine* 290T look very different! Female Heads #2 Heather* 230T Same caution as above. My pick LaWanda 375T for removal and replacement is Rita* 260T Annette. Why? It's not colorable Kimi* 250T and we don't see too many of these Audri* 275T around. However, if the Temple Winni* 245T Stewards use popularity as a guide- Lana* 280T line, then I'd say "Kimi" may be Annette 350T gone come Thursday. Doris* 255T Male Heads #1 Fakir 320T This is a hard call to make. But Richard* 230T my guess is that Fakir will be Kevin* 200T replaced. I've only seen a few of Robert* 220T these around; it's not a colorable Bob* 210T head and it's one of those that are Buck* 200T truly evil looking when mad! Gary* 310T George* 290T Jeff* 230T Male Heads #2 Craig 375T Another hard call; all these heads Edward* 260T are pretty popular. But since I've Ahmad* 255T assigned myself the task of Werner* 280T speculating, let me take a stab in Jacques* 230T the dark and say that the Noble Bald* 275T head will become a rare head come Bruno* 250T Thursday evening. Noble 350T Robin* 245T Mechanical Heads Metal Man* 300T Now that turfs have been around for TV 500T a while and avatars are being quite Video Camera 280T creative with what they are using Computer 590T for furniture, this particular Iron 540T vendo has heads being used as Cyborg 570T "furniture" -- specifically the Tape 520T TV and Computer heads. Wouldn't Robot 550T surprise me at all if this is the Boombox 520T vendo that is the one replaced totally. But in the event the Temple Stewards just pick one head for removal, my guess is that Metal Man will be gone because it's colorable. Produce Heads Pear 610T This would be my second pick for Jackolantern 590T complete replacement. Tomatoe 600T Walnut 580T Ice Cream* 500T Brocolli 575T Cheese 650T Carrot 620T Radish 600T Animal Heads Panda 400T For the sake of the Golden Knights Cat 390T and the Duckolytes, my guess is Dog 390T that the Unicorn and Duck heads Fox 450T will stay in this vendo. Many of Duck* (female) 310T our Avatar groups are named based Unicorn 420T on one of the other animal heads, Frog 410T too. But since we know that at Duck* (male) 310T least one of these heads will be Shark 300T gone come Thursday, I'm going to take a real shot in the dark and guess the Shark head will be gone. So which of the heads have YOU stocked up on because you just "know" it will be replaced? Methinks many of our collectors will be sinking their tokens into head inventory for the next few days! Which will be still be available? Which will be gone? What will the new heads look like? Only the Temple Stewards know for sure and they aren't telling anyone! I can just imagine the the madhouse at 5:00 p.m. WAT on Thursday though when every Kymerian descends upon NuYu to find out the answers to these questions! See you there! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Gypsy Rose Dedannan Vampire Sparhawk This week, enjoy two great stories from our fourth prize winners. {!} - How Floppy Joe Ferret Arrived in Kymer - {!} By Floppy Joe Ferret Fourth Prize Winner The whole business of coming to Kymer started out very excitingly. Floppy Joe Ferret was about to go on his first vacation. He was going to Disney Land. This was particularly exciting and very dangerous because ferrets are illegal in California, but the risk had to be taken. Floppy Joe wanted to meet Mickey Mouse and with a little bit of mind control, he managed to convince the whole family that it was well worth the trip. "Good thing about that mind control bit," he thought to himself. It is a little known fact that all animals are equipped with a mind control device to assist them in using humans to their full potential. Carefully he allowed himself to be put in to a carrying case and using his mind control managed to get a blanket, litterbox and raisins. Soon enough they were on their way to the airport. Floppy Joe again used his mind control to clear customs and soon was on his way. He felt his ears pop as they took off. "Pretty elitist," he thought, "why should only humans get peanuts?" The plane landed and Floppy Joe felt himself being lifted and placed where his owners could come and pick him up. He hoped they would come soon, these cardboard cat ears were getting itchy. Soon he heard a deep voice, "I'm here for the long slinky cat," he said. The man was thin, with the beginnings of a beard on his chin and small blue eyes. He was wearing jeans and a black leather bomber jacket. Floppy Joe was frantic, he didn't know this human! Anxiously he tried mind control, it didn't work!! The airport lady was too dense and too involved with flirting at the stranger to notice. The man took him and put him in the back of a pickup truck. California was nice, but Floppy Joe was too scared to notice anything. Luck, for the moment was with him. The man stopped to use the restrooms and Floppy Joe made his escape. He slammed against the door, soon it opened. After that, it was easy, he climbed out of the truck and hid. Soon, the man drove away. He was out of danger for the moment. Floppy Joe had to get back to his owners soon. If anyone from the A.S.P.C.A found him he would be in trouble. Floppy Joe wandered and wandered. Soon everything began to look strange. The air smelled of salt. It was salt that he couldn't taste and couldn't feel. Night was beginning to descend and a chill lingered in the air. Floppy Joe saw it then... WATER!! Water was something that could kill you. It was something that would make foamy bubbles in your eyes. Water was something to be feared, somewhere all your gravity would disappear and you would float. Just then he saw the creatures. They were the weirdest creatures he had ever seen. They were huge with many round eyes. Some were glowing eyes and others were black eyes. They had letters on the side of them and huge cloth horns growing out of their heads which seemed to flap and reach out for him. Suddenly, he noticed something, the small humans were dominating them. They were taking them over, stepping all over them and going inside and coming back out. He had to help, it was his duty. Forgetting his fear he ran over to the closest boat, the letters read *The Argo*. He climbed aboard and began to bite and scratch. It was working, some other humans were coming over to aid him. He was helping to save the humans. Just then, one picked him up. The man was friendly and nice looking. He seemed to be able to read the little ferret's mind. "You poor thing, you're lost. Where you from little fellow?" Floppy Joe told him by mind control. "B.C, Canada huh?" Well, I think I can help, it would involve you switching forms for a while. Floppy Joe would try anything to get out of that watery world. A while later, Floppy Joe was human with the ugliest head he had ever seen in his life. The man, which he now knew as Captain of the Argo, bade him farewell and gave him final instructions. "This new world is called Kymer. Once you get off the ship look for your porthole. It will transport you back to your owners." Much later Floppy Joe was reunited with his owners. The man who tried to ferretnap him was in custody and he convinced his owner Arley using more mind control to go back online and live in this community. She did for a while, but she was forced to leave forever by a little sister wanting an Avatar. But that's another story. {!} - How Vampire Arrived in Kymer - {!} by Vampire Fourth Prize Winner I remember the streets of New Orleans the night I left. How empty they were that evening, how lonely. I remember how the midnight summer heat rose up from the ground and how the humidity embraced my body and held me there in the seat of my car, almost like it was begging me not to leave. But I had to run away. Eric was dead. He had been my love for many years. Our wedding was planned to take place only weeks after he was killed in a boating accident. That night I could not shake the image of his head slipping beneath the water from my mind. I kept seeing him, hearing him cry out to me and the others on board. But the rain was falling too hard, and the wind was blowing too fast ... I started driving north of my birthplace of Louisiana, driving all night and sleeping in motels all day for three days. I didn't know where I was headed, nor did I care. Perhaps I would continue all the way up to Canada, or perhaps I would head East to Washington? Or perhaps I would just get away from the Americas and go back to my beloved Egypt. As long as it was far away from New Orleans, it sounded good to me. When my old car finally broke down outside of Minneapolis, that was when I stopped. I could see the lights of the Twin Cities down the highway. *How this place has changed,* I thought as I stepped out of my car. I hadn't been to this place since it was nothing more than gently rolling plains on which the many Native American tribes roamed. I had spent too much time in the South. Leaning over the side of the convertible, I opened my suitcase in the back seat. I didn't want to carry the whole thing with me, so I decided to take only a few of my belongings. I sifted through my things. *This dress ... Eric bought this for me on Mardi Gras. This necklace ... the one he gave me last Christmas. These shoes, this shirt, these earrings ...* "No!" I shouted as I slammed the suitcase shut. I rummaged through my purse and took out the $51 in cash I had, then threw the rest on the car floor. There were too many memories in everything I had, and it was much too much for me to bear. "Let the thieves take the credit cards, the jewelry, everything," I murmured, "I am Julie Christansen no longer." I reached Minneapolis just before dawn. The downtown streets were empty, cold, and wet. I felt weak, for it had been days since I had eaten anything. I hardly noticed before; I do not need to eat as often as other people do. I looked up at the early morning clouds in the sky, which were lined with crimson from the approaching dawn. I let my mind slip into memories of long past -- of my beginning. "Yes, Remy," I whispered softly to the sky, "I will do this for you this dawn." I stepped into a tight alley, feeling my heart pound with familiar anticipation of a practice I had all but abandoned in my years with Eric. I stood in the shadows of the buildings and waited. Adrenaline pumped through my body and I could feel my skin prickle with coldness. At last, I heard footsteps. I felt him, smelled him, tasted him upon the air. I waited until the right moment, when he passed in front of me, to leap out and grab him in one quick, fluid motion. I took us to the top of the building on the east side of the alley and held him in embrace facing away from me. I could feel the confusion he was experiencing. Once I knew what it was like to be suddenly snatched from the ground and taken somewhere else in a split second. I remember the fear. And now I smelled it on this man, this beautiful, young, dark skinned man, just as I smelled it on all the rest. One hand covered his mouth and the other pinned both arms to his sides. His dark almond-shaped eyes were wide with fear and his heart was beating furiously in his chest. I brushed my lips across his neck and whispered in his ear, "Do not fear, for death is quick and merciful when dealt by one such as me." I felt my fangs grow to their full length and sank them deep into the bulging vein in his neck. When I was finished with him, I wrapped him in scraps of black plastic which I found scattered about the roof and laid him to rest in a corner which was littered with trash. The act had been deliciously sweet after all that time. I licked my lips and felt my body slowly grow warm. My eyelids were heavy and the sun was rising on the horizon. I walked to a shady corner of the roof, laid down, and fell asleep. I could hear waves splashing against something. The scene brightened slowly like someone was slowly lighting candles in a room one by one, but I was not in a room. I was not on the roof of the building. I was in the middle of the sea. I floated there on my back and felt my body bobbing up and down in the water, pushed by the waves. I tilted my head back and looked behind me. There was a great ship heading my direction. I gave a shout and waved, hoping there was someone there to see me. My heart lifted when I saw a ladder drop over the side. I swam to it and caught a hold, resting there for a moment to get my thoughts in line. What was I doing here? How did I get here? Who would be up there waiting for me on the deck? Overcome by curiosity, I climbed up the ladder and hauled myself over the railing. There was no one there. I could sense nothing. "Hello!" I jumped and whirled around to find myself face-to-face with an emerald green parrot. "Hello? You *can* talk, can't you?" "I - I ... You were the one who threw that ladder over the side to me?" I looked at the bird quizzically. "How could you --" "Questions, questions. Do you have a cracker?" "No, I don't have a cracker. What's going on?" "My name is Hermes. We're going to Kymer." He whistled and fluttered his wings. "Kymer ...?" "An island in the Dreamscape!" "Dreamscape ...?" "Dreamscape!" "And what, pray tell, will we be doing once we get to this Kymer?" "*You'll* go to the city of Phantasus. You can live there!" "I can ..." I stopped. Was this bird telling me the truth? Surely I was dreaming. He did say something about a Dreamscape ... But live there? I thought about the idea for a moment, *I could start a new life in a new world.* "Are you sure you don't have a cracker?" the bird squawked. "Quite sure," I replied absently, still absorbed in thought. "What's your name?" I looked up. "My name is ..." I paused. Hermes fluttered his wings and cocked his head. "My name is Vampire Jennifer." {!} - Open Letter from Oracle Teresias - {!} Dear Editor, This is just a brief note about some comments I recently made regard- ing the rotation of head in head machines. I was recently quoted as saying that beta heads will be recycled back into head machines. I was extremely busy at the time and the answer was brief and I was not asked for further clarification. Let me provide that clarification for anyone interested. It is true that beta heads will be put back in to head machines during the existence of the Dreamscape. This does not mean that the upcoming rotation of heads will be exclusively nor even mostly beta heads. Out of the roughly 16-20 heads which will replace current heads, there is a chance that *one* of those heads might be a beta head. The rest will be either new or may have been previous prize heads. I wish to make it clear that we never promised that heads would have limited distribution nor are we purposefully driving the rarity of specific heads. Heads we make available for distribution in the vendos will be because of a desire to increase the variety of heads in the Dreamscape and to give people a chance to have some of the heads which are indeed rare, but very, very cool and very, very fun. Those who chase rare heads for their token worth alone run the risk which most investments have - going bust. I hope that everyone will enjoy the new and the old heads in their own way. Sincerely, Oracle Teresias {!} - Tales from the Darkside 4 - {!} introduced by Throbbing Gristle HMS 4? Why 4? Before you ask, here is the answer. The first three parts of this were only published in Deutsche ESP! and were German translations of elder tales and texts from the forum-library. The following is quite new in there and I got the permission to use it here. You know the problem occurring in the forum. So many divisions and subdivisions make these messages disappear somewhere in those drawers, or even nobody will notice them. Some are worth reading. The following surely is. There is "life" in the land of vampires, and one possibility to get part of this life is "Le theatre des vampires". This is what they have to give us. I think the charta was written by Nosferatu (and beats me if I'm wrong... I did not have the chance to find out on this last minute of the weekend...). Here we go. *** Greetings, Mortals of Kymer, We, the Vampyres of la Rue de Temple, have lived amongst you for a very long time, wandering your dreams like shadows, seldom seen, never recognized. We have escorted you and cared for you just as we did in the olden days of lore. Our Ancestors came from a dim and distant past. A past so infinite in fact, that even the eldest of our kind cannot tell our true origins with certainty. There are legends, of course, telling us how the Ancient Ones arrived on an earth of mortals, but those many stories differ in such a way that we are left with only doubts and speculations. Some say that we came from the stars, from the darkness of night itself, where we fed on starlight and comet's sparks. Others call Lilith, or Lilu, our progenitrix. The god Jehova made her as a companion for Adam, but she left her husband in pursuit of her own uncontrollable passions. Others suspect our beginnings may have been in ancient Indian kingdoms or even in Atlantis, that ancient kingdom that now rests in it's watery grave. Some even say that the Ancients were children of Hypnos and the mortal sorceress Circe, which would make them demigods and half brothers and sisters of Morpheus himself. The truth is that we just don't know. The oldest of our group come from Egypt, Syria and Eastern Europe. On the old earth our destiny was to enforce and keep Mother Nature in balance. Like the wolf kills the weak deer only as nature's way of ensuring the healthiness and survival of the flock, we tried and thinned the progressing horde of mankind. Like any good gamekeeper would care for his grounds, we cared for you and your evolution. We handed the weakling and the careless, the godless and the overly pious, over to Hypnos' brother Thanatos. Whom you know by the name of Death. When we finally arrived on Kymer, there seemed to be no purpose for our kind. We realized that Avatars don't die, neither from our kiss, nor from plague, not from infirmity, nor poison. Instead they were simply deleted, erased by powers that were beyond our understanding. New Avatars were not born either, but emerged from a void, in the prime of their lives, shaped apparently by the same mysterious powers. Since we didn't see our place in this system, we followed our urge for individuality and went on our different ways, wandering your city. We choose to accept Morpheus as our deity, next to our mother, nature. She determines our rhythm of life, he watches over our sleep and our dream, and our coffins are now protected by the silver wings of his father, Hypnos. Thus we were free to come and go as we choose, as we always did. We watched, waited, listened and learned, always in the background, always lost in the crowd. We saw thieves and headhunters come and go. We learned that some were driven only by greed and carving for admiration, while others followed a mysterious destiny. We saw preachers and prophets rise and fall. We learned that some were driven only by jealousy and carving for admiration, but others followed a path that will lead them to truth sooner or later. We saw the arrival of beings, seemingly equal to ourselves. However, these similarities ended with appearance, their blood was weak as were their wills, and their penchant for decadence as well as their tendency towards decline were unmistakable. We saw honourable villains supporting the weak and distressed and we saw corrupted heros obtain privileges only to fulfill their own greedy needs. We saw knights, warriors, paladins and policemen arrive, claiming to fight for good, but filled with lust for power that burned in their eyes, and a fire in their souls that burned bright when causing others pain. We had to watch as the friendly atmosphere vanished from the streets. Avatars passed each other without a word of greeting or farewell, on their search for cheap amusement, on their hunt for rare items, fleeing for their ghetto turfs. We lived to see tradition fade away and history fall into oblivion. Values, once taken as granted, became perverted. We saw Phantasus turn into a city of men. What we had an experience recently which made us step out of the shadows once again. Gathered and united we are in la Rue de Temple, and like we did in the old days will again take on our responsibility as shadowy companions of mankind. There are already enough groups in Kymer who promise fun and games. We promise you, the citizens of Phantasus, wisdom and truth. We will bring forth the old legends and breathe new life unto them. We are here to remind you that light and dark are only two sides on the same token. We desire to show you that not everything is as it seems, that light is not necessarily good and shadow evil. Many stand in full light and are just blinding you with mirrors if it is not they themselves that are already blinded. Many wander the shadow, not because they do wrongful deeds, but because they are not helping for personal glory or recognition. A true Vampyre is more in harmony with nature than any other being. Over the centuries we learned to accept our human side just as well as our immortality, and integrate them both. It is this experience that allows us to grant help and advice whenever it is needed. Only when you accept yourself can you achieve a sense of one, and wholeness. Only when you are in a state of harmony can you truly love. Only when you accept Kymer as a whole, the light side and the dark, will you be able to comprehend. Only then will the dream be of meaning. Secret covering letter to the Societee de Theatre des Vampyres: To achieve our above-mentioned goals, my sisters and brothers, our Society will need a certain structure and some defined areas of responsibility. Every one of us is still individual though, and we want to stay that way. So let's keep formal structures and rules to a minimum: The Society is headed by a senate, who will make decisions on all matters of Theatre des Vampyres, consulting with the members whenever the case allows. The Members of the Society are bound by the universal laws of nature and the believe in Morpheus. On top of that there are only two cases in which a Vampyre has to respond to other authorities: In any case regarding the Theatre de Vampyres, at least one senator is to be consulted. The decision on the making of a new pupil is always to be made by a master. According to the rules of the masters, new pupils will only be admitted to the society when a master recognizes the potential of mastership in a candidate. To give other novices an opportunity to prepare for pupilship, they may be admitted to the order of Dark Knights of the Temple. The Temple Knights are subject to their own set of rules and leadership, yet under guidance and advice from the masters of the Society. The Temple Knights have the following tasks - Help implement and support any events run by the Society - Gather Tokens and items to help other Avatars in need - Grant help and guidance to the newly arrived - Guarantee free entrance to the Temple for all and every follower of Morpheus, regardless of group or faction The Members of the Society have the following responsibilities - Elaborate and implement plays to advise, enlighten and preserve the historical awareness of the people of Kymer and to provide entertainment to it's citizens - Elaborate and implement other special events, to raise funds for the Theater or to make people aware of the goals of the Society - Grant help and advice to every Avatar asking for such, regardless of group or faction The Members of the Senate have the following responsibilities - Run and maintain the Theatre des Vampyres - Elaborate and coordinate all events of the Society The Master Vampyres of the Society have the following responsibilities - Spread the teachings and history of the Vampyres of Kymer - Guide and support the pupils entrusted to them - Choose new pupils and elect new Masters from the ranks of the pupils - Guide and advise the Lords of the Temple. See yas next week, TG. {!} - Tarot Majik - Unraveling the Knots - {!} By Hierophant SRK, facilitator of the Sunray Majik Guild I blew up at my mom today While Phred was out for a walk in Dreamscape, Hannah ESP'd him, asking if she could see him alone. They agreed to meet in his turf. As soon as she saw him she burst into tears. "I blew up at my mom today. I got so angry I was shaking." "Echh. What were you fighting about?" Phred asked. "Oh, she misinterpreted some stupid little thing that I said. It makes me crazy when she does that to me." "It doesn't sound very vicious. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding." "It was in a way. But for some reason, her misunderstandings jump into my head and explode." "Did you apologize to each other?" "She'd never apologize," Hannah sputtered. "She says she doesn't even know why I'm angry." Then shifting gears, she shrugged and said, "Not really. Even though we were both upset, we just changed the subject." "The way you left it, I guess it's going to happen again sometime?" "Yeah," Hannah sighed. "Why can't we just relax with each other instead of getting into fights all the time?" "That would be nice. Your relationship with your mom is part of your life. No sense bickering away your precious time. Perhaps with some work you could see this situation in a healing light. Let's try to get some insight from the Tarot." After carefully shuffling the deck, Phred spread the cards face down on the forest green paisley sash. He asked Hannah to stir the cards and feel the question in her mind as she picked out each card. When Phred laid out the cards into a reading, Hannah said in surprise, "There are some cards here that have been in the other readings! I know that's the third reading I've seen the Ace of Ankhs. It's as if it's following me!" Phred laughed out loud. "Yes, Hannah. After you work with the Tarot for a while you'll become accustomed to that. The same card will keep coming up in reading after reading. And it has nothing to do with the way you shuffle the deck. You know how after we shuffle the deck, we spread out the cards and stir them around and pick them at random. You can see that even if a card came up in the same place in the shuffle, it still would fall in a different place after you've spread the cards. Of course, you could say that by chance there should be some coincidences. But sometimes for fun I calculate the likelihood of certain cards popping up over and over, and most of the time, the probability is very tiny. I just accept it as part of the mystery of the Tarot." "Why do you suppose the Ace of Ankhs keeps coming up?" "Perhaps the most important event in your life right now is your new beginning in Dreamscape. A perfect card to represent that new adventure is the Ace of Ankhs. The Ankhs represent the dreams you have come here to discover." "Do you think it can help me with my relationship with my mother?" "Finding your dreams and being lifted by them can help you with every aspect of every moment of your life. Now let's move on to the rest of the reading to see if we can gain more specific insights. The 'question' position contains one of my favorite cards. The Temperance card shows a beautiful woman in a robe holding two cups. She is pouring the substance of consciousness from the cup of unawareness into the cup of awareness. This is such a powerful symbolic act. It is the very essence of personal awakening." "It's a beautiful card. I love that ornament she's wearing at her heart, and her long flowing robe and beautiful hair. This card seems to convey beauty and hope along with its message. Even the name, Temperance, conveys a sense of peace and strength. But what do you mean by personal awakening?" "Our lives in Waking World are often like sleep walking. We act without really seeing and feeling. Most of the time, our dreams seem to be very far away. We long to find our true dreams, and think that those dreams can be found amidst family and friends. But, often, even in relationships our awareness is far away, and without awareness we are controlled by unconscious energy. The Temperance card brings your unconscious energy into awareness, so that you can know your Dreams even in the midst of ordinary moments." "That's interesting. Wow. That's really interesting," Hannah said thoughtfully as she worked through it in her mind. "So my reactions to my mom are almost like my reactions at work. I'm just going through the motions without really being there. And the Temperance card means that I need to be in my inner Dreams when I am trying to relate to her." "That is beautiful Hannah. You get a star for that explanation." "That's really intriguing. Because it makes me realize that arguing pushes me so far away from my dreams I want to scream. By slipping into that groove of being a small child with her I feel like I'm drowning. But that groove is so strong. How can I get out of it?" "That's a good question, and smart that you see that you'll need to work at it. Becoming aware of the whole situation is the first step. The unconscious grooves can grip you tightly until you find the grace of the Temperance card to bring awareness to those moments." A gentle breeze blew through the trees, as they sat quietly, pondering the cards laid out in front of them. Then Phred pointed to the top five cards, which represent the outcome of the reading. "Let's look at the outcome cards for insights into how to unfold your awareness. That's the Queen of Ankhs in the 'crown' position. It's there to remind you of the qualities of feminine leadership and internal strength. It's not talking particularly about your mom, or trying to elevate her to a Queen of Ankhs. In this reading, it is pointing out that underneath the surface both you and your mom have qualities of spiritual strength. If you can see yourself as a spiritually aware person, you'll realize you don't need to blow up at her. And if you can see her as a spiritually strong person, you'll see that she didn't mean to hurt you. The spiritual strength of the Queen of Ankhs is a good reminder that we can all be here to help each other." "Now you're talking about helping people again. I'm still trying to figure out how to get through this situation." "You could see your situation with your mom as an opportunity to help her, and yourself as well. If you accepted your mom's misinter- pretation as an insignificant habit, and let it go by without a reaction, you would be helping her and yourself in many ways." "That's very powerful, Phred. Not reacting is a chance to serve. I'm going to write this reading down. I have to think about it some more." "I often record a reading," Phred said. "It helps me visualize the cards later so I can think about any meanings that I might have missed the first time I looked. For example, in this reading, the final outcome is making me think very hard. I'm going to write it down myself," he said, as he penciled some notes into a small notebook. When he was finished, Hannah exclaimed, "The next card is wild. It shows a man hanging upside down by the ankle. But it's not scary. He's smiling!" "Yes. He's actually got a peaceful glow around his head. That's the Hanged Man in the 'immediate future' position. He's the ultimate picture of accepting whatever comes your way. 'Thy will, not mine, oh Lord.'" "I guess that means I should just accept my relationship with my mom gracefully. Right?" "That's a fair statement, Hannah. You know, whenever you think you have a problem, you can always imagine how it could be much worse. So look on the bright side, and appreciate that you have a working relationship with your mother, even if it's not perfect." "I know Phred. I like the idea of acceptance. When I try to accept something peacefully it helps a lot. There have been many times when I'm in a tough state of mind and I'll stop myself and think about how I'll only make it worse if I get upset. Now what about the final outcome?" "This is a pretty intense final outcome. In the center is the eight of Ankhs. On the right is the Moon, and on the left is the Queen of Pentacles. Let's start by talking about the eight of Ankhs, which represents persecution." "That is intense. Is my mother persecuting me?" "Or you may be persecuting her. The Tarot is being rather blunt here. If you are angry with her a lot, you might as well call it persecution. Of course this persecution is not physically destructive. But it causes emotional pain, and that hurts, too. The two cards of explanation should help explain further. The card of explanation on the right is the Moon." "That's a foreboding card. The picture shows a dog barking at the moon. And with those two pillars out on the rocky hills, I can't tell if it's in a temple or a wasteland." "It's probably a little of each Hannah. The Moon card represents the unconscious aspect of our minds. It could be positive or negative, depending on what's bubbling up within us. The important thing is that because it's unconscious, it controls us." "That follows from what you were saying about the Temperance card, getting these things out into conscious awareness. As long as the arguments are jumping up out of my unconscious, I'm at their mercy. Before I know it, I'm angry and yelling at my mother, even though, consciously I want to be kind to her. I need to work on pulling together my conscious and unconscious motives." "That's a good way to put it, Hannah. Consciously you'd rather not be angry, and would rather be in harmony with your mother. I think this reading is pointing out how much work you have to do to get into a conscious state of acceptance with her, and then your relationship can be much more loving." "What does the Queen of Pentacles represent?" "As with the other Queens she represents the mature, feminine aspects of her suit. The Pentacles suit represents material as well as mental abundance. So the Queen of Pentacles, like a nurturing mother, fills your plate with food, and teaches you how to become a good person. It's a perfect card for this reading." "But why is she in that position next to the Persecution card and the Moon?" "I think it's a reminder that your mom has always done her job, raising you, bringing you into this world. But when we're little children, we tend to look at our parents as gods. They are everything to us. As we grow older, we become more and more annoyed with them, because we start to realize that they aren't gods. There are many things in life they can't really teach us or give us. Eventually we find that we have to do things ourselves or depend on others. I'm afraid many of us deeply resent that our mother and father didn't turn out to be our own personal magical gods who could grant us every wish throughout our lives. That's the real unconscious disappointment that makes it so easy for you to get annoyed with your mom. Of course, she's fallible. She's just human. But compared with those old childhood expectations, she falls short time after time." Hannah looked at Phred and tears came to her eyes. "I can see exactly what you're saying, Phred. That's amazing. I have to forgive my mother for being human," she said softly. "I'm afraid so, Hannah. And the funny thing is, it's hard work. Even after you have an insight like this, you still have to fight with those old unconscious mental habits." "Darn, I hate being at the mercy of those stupid mental habits." "That's why you're here in Dreamscape, Hannah. To reach out for your dreams, and ride them to the stars. The antidote to the poison of unconscious habits is to connect with your own true dreams." {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} by Witchy The Magic of Flowers -------------------- If you love flowers, if while walking down country lanes you find yourself stopping and staring at those little creatures of light and color, if you have been standing over them in wonder, feeling that there must be more to flowers than just the pleasure they give to your sight and smell - then flower magic is for you, and you should choose them as a primary tool. Doing magic with flowers is both very easy and extremely difficult since there are no hard and fast rules to go by. Contrary to herbs, which have a strong identity of their own and work pretty much in the same way regardless of who is using them, flowers react strongly to outside factors when doing magic. Herbs work best on the physical plane and through a more or less direct interaction with the body; flowers act on the emotions, and their magic moves through feelings. It is a precise and delightful task learning to know one's own flowers. It means choosing them, watching them, smelling them, having them close by for a length of time, and noticing one's own reactions to that flower's closeness. If you happen to have a garden where you grow your favorite flowers, there is of course nothing better than using those flowers for your magic. Otherwise, choose the flowers which are fresh in season at the moment: you can find them in shops or flower markets or can gather them in the countryside. Some people feel there is something sad about a cut flower because it has been taken away from its environment and it will soon die. They think that the true beauty of a flower can only be seen when it stands free and natural in its home ground. This is true. But it is also true and important that flowers do have a magic potential, which most often remains untouched, and that they are happy to be able to fulfill it. A red rose in an alcove, looking over the joys of two lovers, is part of the magic of that moment; She has helped it to come into existence. She is no more just a flower, but a presence in her own right. When a certain flower is not available fresh (and that is often bound to be the case), do not entirely rely on its dried petals and leaves. While using dry herbs works very well in herb magic, it does not have the same effect in flower magic. The spirit of the flower leaves it when it dies. A dry flower carries the memory of what it once was, but not much of the active magical properties. You need to also use its essence, its perfume. A flower carries much of its magic in its scent. Using that you will be able to find its presence and its magic. To Know a Flower ---------------- Find a beautiful, well decorated note-book in which you can collect your information on the particular flowers, your impressions, your feelings. Look around and find the flower which at this moment attracts you most, not necessarily the one you like best, but the one you feel most interested in. Gather as many of that flower as you can. If you can fill up your home with it, all the better. At least fill one room (best of all your own magic place) while you are studying it. If it is impractical for you to do this, one specimen at least should stay in your magic place for at least three days. In order to become close to the flower during the next three days find the time for one hour each day to sit silently by them. Be open to it, breathe in its scent. Even the most odorless flower has a scent of some kind. Stay away from the man-made corruption of some species, which have lost all of the original perfume of the flower. Many modern varieties of rose are scentless. That is just a crime. Look at the flower, noticing all the details, but most of all be receptive to the emotions and feelings that the flower will evoke in you. If you find some memories and old tales surfacing in your mind pay attention to this, as it might be important to the function that the flower will draw for you. Write down everything under the heading you will have made on that flower's name. Write down beginning with your first reaction, your first thoughts, and then every day try to feel deeper and deeper what that flower has to say to you. It might be that a particular flower, after a first moment of excitement, leaves you rather cold. Don't force things. It might be that this flower's magic just isn't for you. Don't worry, there are many other paths to choose from! Also gather some information from a good botanical book on the origin of the flower, its flowering times, if pharmaceutical uses and cosmetic uses for that flower are known. Look up any legend and lore about that flower and write down the things that capture your attention. Be sure to do this last, as you don't want to influence your own perception of the relationship between you and the flower. After you have done all this, you can start seeing how you can use it in magic. In that too, let your intuition guide you. If a flower gives you a strong feeling of plenty, perhaps it could be used in a fertility spell or incantation - or it could be used in conjunction with other herbs in a philter. Write down your own experiments and their success or failures. Never do more than one incantation at a time. That is true for any kind of magic. What follows is an indication and an example. Be sure to find out your own true relationship to the particular flowers. Always remember, there are no hard and fast rules in this game. What feels right is right, and what really works is right. Methods of Flower Magic ------------------------ Here I will explain some of the methods which you can use to do magic with your flowers: By AIR - Write a spell and keep it under the flower's vase, until it has blossomed; or keep the flower by your bedside, and as you fall asleep, ask its spirit to show you an answer to your query, a way out of a situation. By FIRE - Burn the essence of the flower; or let a candle burn continuously until the blossom you have placed next to it is open. By WATER - Let the flower's petals steep in a glass of well water, under the full moon, for a whole night. Drink the water during the Calling the Powers ritual. By EARTH - Plant a seed in a little pot, giving it the desire, or purpose you want it to accomplish. When the plant is ready the wish is granted. Water Lily ---------- The name nymphaea comes from the Greek nymphe which means virgin. The Greeks gave this name to the plant because of the beautiful aloofness of it, which in our day makes it a flower of unique beauty. In the literature of many countries the nymphaea comes to represent a thing of grace and purity and of virginal beauty; like the spirit which springs forth from the chaos, the beautiful flower floats on mud. Magical Uses - Water lilies have sedative powers when applied to the heart. Contemplating the purity of the flower, untouched by the surrounding, the heart again finds its very own core of grace. When you feel that life is just too much to bear, go to a pond and let the spirit of the water lilies soothe your troubles. It is like a mellow blanket of white and dew descending in your mind, cooling all heat, rounding all edges, taking the sharpness away from pain, until you sleep, or cry, and smile again. The water lily is wonderful in all kinds of love magic. If love is the cause of pain, no matter what the reason is, the water lily will help you find again that place in your heart which is virgin and unaffected, that part that remains pure and whole throughout all of life's difficulties. Since it may not be easy to find a water lily when you need one, unless you have a pond in your garden, use the essence of it for your incantation. As you sit and complete yourself in the circle, dab a few drops of the perfume on your wrists and inhale the scent. Conjure the image of the flower and see yourself sitting by a pond, in a green forest. Feel the dew on the ground, and hear the noises of the undergrowth. See the flower floating simply on the water and see yourself as that flower. You can imagine yourself curled up inside it, floating weightless above the waters. You should perform this magic in the evenings, before going to sleep. Then, leave your magic place, without performing any of your usual nightly activities (you should have performed those before starting the magic), go straight to bed and let yourself go to sleep, while you are still "inside the bud". When you wake in the morning you will feel very different. Your problems might still be there, but they will be further removed from you, at a distance from which it will be easier to find a solution. If that night you have a dream which you remember well, pay particular attention to it, for it will be the spirit of the nymphaea helping you. Practical Information - The water lily is commonly found in ponds and slow streams. The flower and rootstock are used as sedatives. To keep, shake the water off the flowers and make them into strings of flowers which you will hang in a well aired, shadowy place. Cut the rootstock into slices and dry them in the sun. Keep in glass or porcelain. Be careful: when the flower is scentless, it is probably not a pond lily, but a different variety of the plant, which would not produce the same effect in magic. It helps to know the code: July is indicated by the number 7, and A indicates that this is the first comprehensive chart for the month. We hope that readers will understand that this column is still evolving in our efforts to bring you the most and best information about rare item sales and the Kymer economy. * * * Last week, we shared some Consignment Savvy. This week, we offer some Buy-words for Bidders. 1) Arrive a few minutes early. Most auction houses announce their business policies from the stage before the first lot is put up for bid. These rules can and do change. Pay attention to them. 2) Know exactly how many tokens you have in your pocket. Most auctions last for only two hours. It is unfair to hold up the progress of the auction while you frantically ESP all your friends for a loan or visit the ATM because you are 55 tokens short of the amount you bid. 3) If you are bidding on a big-ticket item and you are not a wealthy avatar, get a loan in advance. Don't lose that desperately desired, ultra-rare head or item you have wanted for months and months because you lack those last few tokens. 4) Be cooperative. Do not unghost unless you are asked, and reghost immediately upon request. 5) Never ESP the Auctioneer or the Pitchperson. 6) Know the item you are bidding on. Most auction houses have a firm policy: If you are the high bidder on an item, you are obligated to purchase it. If you repudiate a high bid and refuse to complete the purchase, an auction house is fully within its rights to refuse your consignments or bids or to eject you from the premises in the future. If you are in any doubt about the item that is up for bid, ESP a staff member. 7) Avoid auction fever! Unless the item is exceptionally rare (one dozen or fewer in Kymer), you can bet your paint patch that the same item will be up for bid later at the same auction, or at another auction within a short time. For most items, bid no more than 150% of the average price during the preceding week. There is a logical exception, and that exception is the exceptional rarity. If you have the tokens and you're sure you want it, bid what you can afford. 8) Remember that the consignor pays the auction house's commission. That means that the auction house is working for the consignor, not for you. The on-stage staff will normally include a Pitchperson, who has three jobs: a) To cut down on ESPs by providing information about the item being sold; b) To entertain the gathered ghosts within the context of promoting the item; c) To encourage the audience to bid as much as possible. Listen to the Pitchperson, and only ESP the staff when you have a question not covered by the information he or she presents, but do not use the pitch as the basis for making a purchase or for determining the amount of your bid. The Pitchperson may be truthful when he or she says that an item sold for a certain price last week. However, auction prices are volatile. It is easy to get stung if you bid too much. 9) Beware of conflicts of interest. A professional auction house does not permit its staff to profit at the expense of the consignor. The best interests of a staff member who bids (getting a choice bargain) directly conflict with the duty of the auction house (to get the highest possible price for a consignor). Be very suspicious if the staff does not aggressively promote the item up for bid. My personal policy is to stop bidding on an item following any bid by a staff member, whether that bid is made from the stage, through a known close associate (inworld spouse, SO, or business partner), or through a known alternate avatar. If an item is not actively promoted and a staff member buys it, ask yourself, "If I were the consignor,how would I feel?", especially if the item sells for an unreasonably low price. There are numerous auctions in Kymer. At most auctions, staff members are paid. Those who bid and buy profit unethically. 10) Although the auction house works for the consignor, you are a customer, too. That means that the staff's economic interests are subordinate to yours. Some auction houses encourage staff to bid up the price of an item so that it will not go too cheaply. This, also, is a conflict of interest. If the consignor wants a minimum price, it is his or her responsibility to set a minimum bid, or to attend the auction and buy his or her own item back, rather than let it go too cheaply. I have done both. It is a conflict of interest for the staff to artificially inflate the price. 11) It happens to all of us: Now and then we pay too much--even way, way too much--for an item. An acute case of buyer's remorse is not grounds to ESP bomb the auction staff. When this happens, and it almost certainly will, shrug it off and chalk it up to a valuable learning experience. Far better it is to do this with funnymoney Kymer tokens than with real world currency! * * * Mufasa's Tantalizing TidBits: As of Friday night, the SunRay VoCC auction no longer requires that bidding be in 50 Token increments. A very peculiar auction was held on Saturday night. Candice consigned a number of very rare beta heads to Clover's Collectibles for a private, invitation-only auction. Candice invited only her friends, and would neither authorize the auction house to send invitations nor to release any information. This was the consignor's privilege, of course, but it is very puzzling. More attendees mean more interest and higher bids. Is Candice an FSC employee? Was this an FCS scheme to get exceptional rarities to a select few without incurring charges of elitism? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm ... If you were there, we'd like to hear from you! Wart hung on to the lead until the very end, when we had to go to a speed tie breaker. As a result, "Ink Cannery Girl" came in first with 18 points, and took the rose head, "Hi, I'm Julianna" came in second with 17 points and took a valentine, while Wart took third, winning a Metal Man head painted with very unique colors. (Thanks to the Mages, who were using Turf paint last week to paint heads.) Tuesday, July 2 --------------- We had only 11 players, but it was a tough night. Rogils came in first with only 15 points, Sunray Sir Launce came in second with 14 points, and Io came in 3rd with 13 points. Wednesday, July 3 ----------------- We only had twelve players, but again, had to go to a speed round to break a persistent tie for third. "Hi, I'm Julianna" came in first with 24 points, Rogils came in second with 20 points, and Charity Case came in third with 12 points. For those of you who have not yet played TRIVIA Challenge at Megret's Madhouse, one thing to remember is *don't* give up! Se que se han preguntado: ¨De donde proviene ella? Pues he aqui la historia..... Directamente desde El Olimpo llegue. VENUS, este fue mi nombre cuando mi destino fue vivir en Grecia. Alli fui la Diosa griega de la belleza, de la hermosura, del amor, de la generacion y de la vida universal. Todas las mujeres del mundo salieron y seguiran saliendo de mi ser, por que mi mente aun no ha muerto. Fui adorada bajo diversos nombres por todos los pueblos orientales, fui inspiraci¢n para muchos hombres. Gracias a ellos aun se me recuerda en diversas esculturas: VENUS de CNIDO (Museo del Vaticano), VENUS de Medicis (Galeria de los Oficios, Florencia), VENUS Anadiomena (sale del mar), VENUS de Milo y VENUS de Arles (ambas Museo de Louvre, Paris). Pero decidi vivir como una mujer normal y entonces tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo. Volvi a nacer, pero esta vez con el nombre de Cleopatra VII, mujer hecha de carne y hueso, belleza amor e inteligencia. Aun conservando los atributos de mi vida pasada. Naci en Alejandria en el 69 fui reina de Egipto desde el 51 y la figura mas importante de los Ptolomeos, por mi papel desempe¤ado en los acontecimientos de la ultima etapa de la Republica romana, todo esto gracias a mi belleza e inteligencia. Ame intensamente a Julio Cesar. Al que conoci en Alejandria, de el tuve un hijo Cesarion. Vivi en Roma por un corto tiempo hasta que el fue asesinado. Luego me case con Marco Antonio en el 36, ambos teniamos pensado llevar a Egipto a la Independencia pero Octavio (sobrino de Marco Antonio) acabo con nuestros proyectos en la Batalla de Actium. Tras la derrota no pude convencer a Octavio para quedarme a vivir en Egipto como aliada de Roma. Entonces tome una decision erronea decidi suicidarme. Tuve una muerte con sentido religioso, mediante la picadura de un aspid ( era el ministro de Amon Ra). Pero el hombre que amaba tambien murio junto a mi. Fui una mujer poderosa y bella y asi sere recordada para siempre de generacion en generacion hasta el fin del mundo. Al convertirme en un ser celestial quise poder volver a la vida otra vez. ¡Y como siempre la mujer bella y poderosa logro lo que queria volver a la vida, pero esta vez en Kymer, The Dreamscape! ¡Gracias a Osiris, Dios de la vida despues de la muerte! Aqui me estableci con el nombre de Hispaniclyte Venus Cleopatra. The Krewe of the Duckolytes ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Pinkie and the Brains - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects On Thursday, July 11, Passion as Pinkie, and Brains, Wing Commander of the Krewe of the Duckolytes, hosted a very special session of "Pinkie and the Brains", sponsored by the Krewe of the Duckolytes and ESP!, Kymer's premier weekly newspaper. Pinkie had newly spruced-up the turf in honor of the celebrity guest, that hooded hero, that burgundy bombshell, Oracle Teresias. Two weeks before, in a fortuitous elevator encounter, Passion had persuaded Teresias to pay the Krewe a visit, and to join the fun of this new game. Promptly at 6:00 p.m., Brains started the event, as numerous ghosts slid into the cloud just in time for the rules announcement. Naturally, Teresias chose the Temple as his first place to hide, and Unga-Bunga, Duckolyte Wing, won the round by being the first to locate Teresias and utter aloud the word "GOTCHA!" Unga-Bunga showed exceptional intuition and speed, because this round did not follow the traditional procedure. The password contained no clue to Teresias's location. Unga-Bunga, with his typical "nose for the good stuff", selected Prize Chest #4, which, when unlocked, revealed a very rare Gingerbread Man ornament. LumMoose, Duckolyte Senior Wing, won Round Two by locating Passion at the gate to the Blasted Heath and breathlessly uttering the secret phrase, "Bombs Away!" The prize chest selected by LumMoose was opened to reveal a heart chest, which was packed with a valentine. hot chocolate, and rare Green #45 body paint. Round Three was exceptionally difficult because, once again, the password of "Gotcha!" contained no clue to the location where Teresias could be found and because, getting into the spirit of the game, he secreted himself in a very difficult-to-find location: the second female head vendo at the back of the NuYu Shop. Butterball, showing exceptional tenacity, won the round and a beautiful, rare pink rose head. Huckleberry hopped to victory in Round 4, finding Brains preening his feathers by the statue in the Meditation Park. The secret phrase was, "Michelangelo Did It!" and Huck's chosen prize chest revealed a sack stuffed with a romantic lacy heart head inside. Fortunate Kira discovered that the best is often last. As the victor of Round #5, Kira's locked prize chest revealed a true Kymer treasure: an exceptionally rare voodoo doll clothed in a brown shirt accessorized with a gold buckle. On July 25, these Galloping Ghosts will join the victors of all other prize rounds in a special Championship Round of "Pinkie and the Brains". The winner will receive a very special rarity as a prize. The game is fun, the prizes are often extremely rare, and there is no entry fee to play. There are still two more weeks to qualify to compete in the Championship Round, so be sure to join Passion, Brains, the Krewe of the Duckolytes, and our next surprise Celebrity Guest at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, and Thursday, July 25, in the turf "Pinkie's Place". {!} - Duckolyte Ghost Racing - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects July's Duckolyte Ghost Racing got off to a rousing start on Sunday, July 7, in the turf "Duck Hunt". Winners of a select round each week will receive a rare Christmas Prize. The ever-capable and genial LumMoose, Duckolyte Senior Wing, hosted 12 rounds of ghost racing, the ninth round being the competition for the special Christmas prize. Unga-Bunga, Duckolyte Wing, always a top-notch ghost racing competitor, won that prize, a rare yellow bulb ornament. He walked away a much richer avatar, because bulb ornaments are very rare. Remember, there is never an entry fee for any Duckolyte event. {!} - Duckolyte TriviaMaster - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects On Sunday, July 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the turf "Duck Hunt", Brains, Wing Commander hosted the first session of the new Duckolyte TriviaMaster. The topic was the ever-popular "Duck Soup", assorted facts from everywhere compiled by a duck. The new features were the scoring method and the prize structure. For the first time, each correct answer scored one point each, with no bonus points awarded for speed. This means that any avatar, even on a slow machine with a noisy node, can hope to win if he or she is truly a master of the trivial. Because the questions must be more esoteric to avoid nunmerous tie-breaking rounds, mentally-mighty avatars will be rewarded with a more varied range of prizes. To inaugurate the new version of the game, Brains decided to make it a special prize night, and the rewards for success were truly outstanding. Following are the winners for the week and the prizes they won: 1st Place: Acolyte Hindemith, who won a heart chest containing 500 Tokens, a rare pink rose head, rare pink body spray, and a snowball; 2nd Place: @Dark Sun@,Duckolyte Wing, who won a heart chest containing 250 Tokens, a lacy heart head with rare white lace, rare white body spray, and a snowball; 3rd Place: Julie S, who won a heart chest containig 125 Tokens,a TV Head, a fern, and a valentine; 4th Place: Duckolyte Biker Steve, who won roses in a blue vase. Despite the new scoring method, only one tie-breaker was required. Four avatars competed for the position of fourth-place winner. Acolyte Hindemith generously donated his prize to the Krewe of the Duckolytes to provide additional prizes for the evening. Each of the items Hindemith won was given to a lucky ghost. Including Acolyte Hindemith's donation, a total of thirteen door prizes were awarded to occupants of the Eye in the Sky. Following are the standings for the month of July: Acolyte Hindemith, 5 points; @Dark Sun@, Duckolyte Wing, 3 points; Julie S. , 2 points; Duckolyte Biker Steve, 1point. And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice, he said: * * * * When love beckons to you, follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you yield to him, Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you believe in him, Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden. * * * * For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth. * * * * Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself. He threshes you to make you maked. He sifts you to free you from your husks. He grinds you to whiteness. He kneads you until you are pliant; And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast. * * * * All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart. * * * * But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure, Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor, Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. * * * * Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; For love is sufficient unto love. * * * * When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God." And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course. * * * * Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; And to bleed willingly and joyfully. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving; To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy; To return home at eventide with gratitude; And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips. {!} - Introduction to the Exercise and Movement Guild - {!} By Sunray Fawn The goal of the Exercise and Movement Guild is to explore ways in which avatars can develop the simple and the subtle ways of expression in Cyberspace. Although it may seem we are very limited ... the simple gestures available to us can carry quite a bit of force and meaning. The F-Keys, the ghosting, and the places in a locale in which we position ourselves begin to take on somewhat of a "psychic" meaning. Indigo started this guild holding the hope of teaching and experimenting with others how to move and use our gestures to truly express our moods, our wit, our sadness, our joy, etc., while having fun in the process. We have a number of enjoyable exercises planned and look forward to working with all of you as we explore this new frontier together. {!} - Poetry & Storytelling Guild July Schedule - {!} Sunray Kethrey This is the latest Poetry Pantry schedule for the month of July. Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
