Next time maybe! Of primary importance for me to address this week is the Event Schedule. Paul has been away for the weekend and I've had the task of finalizing it and comparing it with the schedule posted by the Scheduling Group on Saturday, July 6. In doing so, I found many inconsistencies, times which seem that they may be incorrect, events shown on our schedule which aren't on the SG Schedule, and vice versa. To try to verify this information would mean not getting ESP! uploaded until Monday night ... and THAT is something I do not want to happen. We on the ESP! staff would like to provide as accurate an event schedule as we possibly can; but because there is so much going on these days, it has been very difficult to do so! We must rely upon (1) the hosts to send their event information to us and (2) the Schedule which the Scheduling Group posts on Saturdays. If you are a host reading this, please review your listings in our schedule today to insure that they are accurate. If they aren't, please send email to either Paul (100612,3273) or to me (71273,373) so that your events can be listed properly. If you are a player reading this and you have used our schedule to plan your stay in Kymer, only to find no host, no event going on at the time that we have shown, please let us know which event and the host's name so that we may follow up with the host to get accurate information. We would appreciate your help in keeping our schedule accurate so that we can provide you with an up-to-date calendar by which to plan your journeys into the Dreamscape. Thank you! {!} - Dread's Spot - {!} By Dread Remember when the farthest we could travel was the imagination of Arthur C. Clarke et al? It would take so many thousand years to reach the next galaxy that writers dealt with the constraints of space and time using warp speeds and time travel. The fusing of speed and time, with help from Newton and those who would years later conduct the recent experiments to prove his theories correct, has unveiled the real possibility of worm holes, and the reality of travelling at the speed of light in the not too distant future. Last week NASA unveiled the shuttle that would be operational by 2000. It has no solid fuel rockets but a different technology, and the technology that is the stepping stone towards particle beam energy. These futuristic engines will propel craft to Mars and back in 120 days allowing for a 30 day stop on Mars. The technology is speed. An instrument placed near the sun to channel a beam to earth will make it possible for a craft to travel at lightning speed within the beam. The faster you go the slower time passes, and at the right speed you can travel anywhere in no time. I dread the idea of flying into the sun to prove it, but the thrust of this insight is to show how computers and technology will soon make it possible to test the theories of escaping from the age old shackles of space and time. The huge spectrum of possibility feeds the rate at which our knowledge of computers and technology develops. The software and hardware of computers has leapfrogged its way forward since the start, i.e. software requires more powerful hardware, then hardware is introduced to accommodate much more demanding software, soon the software is designed to outgrow the hardware and so we wait for the new hardware to emerge, and so it leapfrogs. This is all taken for granted nowadays with the painful wait for computers to be as common as kettles in the every day household. However, it does allow the unhurried development and experimentation of the medium i.e. virtual worlds. So called paparazzo cameras have appeared all over the globe to broadcast real time events over the web. There are no laws to prohibit the invasion of privacy from a camera, and only this weekend one paparazzo was blocked for filming the house of the British Defense Secretary in real time over the web. This was a matter of taste from the internet provider, though it would seem ludicrous to suggest that no pressure came from the Government to block, but it does show us the real time experience that will combine with our virtual worlds to form the media of the coming years. For now, we are mere witnesses to the slow development of the worlds available to us and we must work things out for ourselves and not question or suggest or contribute or enhance, it seems -- We are not a part of it! That is exactly what we were told about the internet. Okay, well maybe I was a bit harsh, and I slanted at WorldsAway, yes, well that is exactly what I meant. Look in the libraries -- how many add-ons do you see written by FCT? Is there a single Bingo? or a handy patch maybe? Is there a regular publication? Or even one that it backs? The answer is no. The use of any external development is not authorised. This is a safe strategy but a prolonging one. Who can say which is the right way? There are so many variables and opinions, but the WorldsAway forum has revealed that there is a general unease at the distance set by FCT between them and us. I have said before that it is almost predictable for the server to crash at the weekend, and this has become almost worthy of being listed in the event schedule, but this is not the complaint. I think most who understand *where* we are (as outlined so far) appreciate that this sort of thing will happen. It is the fact that there is so much we could do today, but we are forced to accept less. How long was winsock disabled? Okay so winsock connections are never going to be totally secure but what takes it so long to be fixed? A complete server crash only takes hours to get back up and running. Or are there other reasons? This is an extract from a forum post concerning this week's server crash, I hope this is okay with Emmanuelle: *I think they are testing their INTERNET based product with us.. on our expenses.. and I guess IT DOESN'T WORK!* Well Webworlds may be considered more profitable but it is a necessary step that has to be developed completely separate from WorldsAway and the cost to WorldsAway seems to be negligible in comparison to future gains when businesses set up shop in our environment. With ever more people becoming dissatisfied and walking away from the Dreamscape, it seems incredible that the money rakers do not see it. It is rather irresponsible, too, considering the planned Redwall forum and the current buzz for patches that will eventually cause the client software to self destruct. So real money will be lost when we all move away from Compuserve to the Redwall forum, and if you think that designing your very own virtual world on the web is such a big deal, then think again. The software to do this is only several hours download time away. The point I am trying to make is that if you tell people *do it yourself* for long enough, they will. The patches that have sprouted recently are controversial; on the one hand we have done something to enhance WorldsAway; the picking up and placing of objects without much effort. OTOH patches are never stand alone utilities like bingo but they hack into the client software and are designed to fool the host by swapping index sequential files and the like. This will result in software problems. It will also mean that FCT resources will be granted to ensure that this is no longer possible. This we can assume. It is inevitable. Now we begin to see the real message; it isn't about all the rubbish I've just talked about, it's quite simply *if we can remarkably change the way we do things in WA for the better by modifying one single data file, then why isn't it already possible?* The people who design these patches are not criminals, they are computer programmers and they deserve a pat on the back, and we deserve the convenience of their efforts which should be incorporated into the WA software for the sake of progress alone. When you consider the recent spray patch, you begin to wonder just how much freedom we should have in the designing of new tools. So now we see unique multicoloured people walking the streets, psychedelic heads and two-tone clothes are the rage -- err, not for me and I have refused to accept this patch. Not that I am against it in principal but that I regard it in a way detrimental to progress. So are we saying now that there are no body, head, or turf paints anymore? We can simply use whatever we wish on whatever we choose? Is that the ejaculative result? Woopeee!!! Psychedelic fuzz balls!! Okay so an avatar can become unique. That is great news but what happens at the auctions with so many ordinary vendo heads that are originally painted and will it be good or bad for the economy? At this point all I can think of is to watch Mufasa's column for any hints. All in all, the road ahead looks very exciting and I do realise that part of the reasons for FCT not encouraging the release of applica- tions dedicated to certain operating systems are based on the fact that 10% of users are running on Macs and if it can't be used by *all* then it is not acceptable. However the gaps between hardware and between *them and us* are being bridged ... whether we like it or not. The Miss WorldsAway beauty contest was held yesterday at the Hispaniclytes' turf. I was one of the judges and I enjoyed it -- hey who wouldn't. The final script arrived that morning and it was evidently very organised. From thirty-five applicants, twelve contestants were filtered for the show. Hispaniclyte Boricua ensured the event went smoothly and it was well worth attending. Gypsy Rose Dedanann Vampire Sparhawk Sun Fun Enjoy three great stories from our third prize winners. {!} - How Gypsy Rose Arrived in Kymer - {!} by Gypsy Rose Third Prize Winner My name is Gypsy. I was born in 1331 in Egypt. Soon after my parents purchased a cart and left our homeland - I was never told why, though my grandmother said it was told to my people in a vision. Still, we left, and it was the last time I saw my place of birth for a hundred years. My childhood is a blur of memories. I do not remember Israel or Turkey though we passed through there. I think I was too young. I remember swimming in the black sea however, and playing with children in the mouth of the Volga before being chased away from them with sticks by their parents. I was a young child when we passed through Poland and Germany and a woman when we arrived in France. By then, we were no longer Egyptian or "Little Egyptians" - we had become Gypsies - disease carriers possessed by the devil - child eaters that would steal your heart away. And from Germany to France we were persecuted. By then the plague had reached Europe from the East and perhaps we were blamed for its carriage - though all knew it was the trader ships and not ourselves. We considered going to Spain but we were not allowed passage. Those bleached Europeans that had never travelled more than 3 miles from their home were convinced we black skinned people were straight from the jaws of hell. They stoned us, and burnt us for witch craft. At the borders of France they were ready to kill us rather than let us on our way. Yet they still came to us for our "Magic" and our "Fortune Telling", and it was this that became our permission for passage - our protecting knight. * * * I was now 16. We were camped outside a small village on the outskirts of Troyes. Then, Troyes was a great city containing the Holy relics of Pope Urban IV, and the Cathedral of Saint Pierre et Saint Paul, and with much trade and many festivals. My mother had taught me how to dance and read decks of cards for the citizens, and I made money for my family by dancing for the Squires in the castles that surrounded the area, and by luring young men in the city street fairs to cross my palm with silver because of my handsome face.... One evening, my mother brought to me a young french man from the city, "Marius" and I was to tell his fortune for him. I donned my beads and my veil and earned my keep in the dark caravan, with performance and sweet lies that he should have fine wife and pretty children. He paid me a few sou and went on his way. The next day at the fair I saw him again in the crowd. From that night on he sat outside our camp watching over the caravan where I slept, from that day on he walked in my shadow and breathed the air I finished with. I was much mocked by my own men. "Gypsy has caught a shiny white French city man" they called out and made me blush. So I shooed him away when I saw him, hid my eyes from him, or ran away. He did not go. He grew weak and pale with pining - and then he disappeared. * * * Thirteen nights from when I first saw him, a village elder - an old woman who cured the others with plants and prayer, came to our camp. She screamed and bellowed until we were awake and out of our beds, and then demanded that I was brought in front of her. "Bring me the harlot that has killed my sisters son!" she screamed so loudly and so often. We all knew it was I. We all knew that the son was Marius. I was summoned and stood in front of her. Her eyes were wide and wandering and she rolled and twisted as she walked. She had been nibbling herbs from the woods I suspected - for I had seen many of the women do such. I saw them lying naked in the trees with their eyes rolling and their mouths foaming -and the next day they would always be claiming they were flying the skies that night! So I stood by the woman and laughed at her. I was not scared of an old woman intoxicated. She grew frenzied. I thought she was to slap me but no ... instead she outstretched her arm - hand flat - palm facing me, and began muttering in a local dialect I had not learnt. I mocked her still. I circled her - imitating her action and reciting in my own tongue Nursery Rhymes in a voice that was dark and menacing, so it sounded like evil prayers. The woman swayed and grew dizzy, clutching her head and reeled around and around - and all the while the flames of the camp fire grew larger and larger until finally she seemed to reach the peak of her pain and flung herself into the blaze. I gasped at my mistake - to frighten her so - and made to grab her, but I was too late. When the fire died down - I raked and raked and found nothing. I stayed up all night with a branch in my hand - vainly dragging the ashes. The next morning, the rest of the village found that the elder woman had gone, and soon pieced together evidence to find that she disappeared in our camp. By evening they had surrounded our camp with torches and pitch forks, and by morning all of my family were dead and their caravans and possessions burnt. * * * I spent the next few days hiding in the woods, running through the night and sleeping through the day. I could not remember how I had survived. And I arrived on the outskirts of Paris within a week or so more, and hid in the gutters. I begged on the street for my food. I slept in the sewers. I watched thieves and tramps, noblemen and goodmen die around me of plague, and I suffered nothing. Though I starved I never grew thin. Though I were exposed to disease I never suffered. And all the while my head was full of an excruciating sound - that of a million voices screaming at me. I was cursed. She had cursed me. I could not die - I would live forever - and I could hear into other people's minds. From my times in the gutters of Paris I learnt this. I heard the internal screaming of the thoughts of my fellow sufferers and it nearly drove me crazy. I had to teach myself to shut it out to survive, and when I found a way - I struggled to keep those dying around me alive - and grew desperate when I could not do a thing to save them. The old woman had cursed me in the worst way I could imagine. Since then, I have lived through the centuries and become bitter, who wouldn't?. I visited the place of my birth 190 years on and found it hollow and dried out. I wandered the earth - and grew rich. I watched the downfall of a million empires, and kings and religions. I saw the growth of a million governments and inventions. I have learnt only beauty is transient, pain is ever-lasting. And in just this last hundred years - I have bought myself an island far from the Scottish Coast. Here I have lived alone - and the sea and the distance just drowns out the voices in my mind. I have a single man who comes in a fishing boat and delivers fuel for my generator - supplies for my livestock and other foodstuffs I cannot grow myself. Occasionally I come ashore and see the village. I have seen many come and go - be born and die. I had a few lovers - all dead now. I can't get close to people to watch their horror when they find out what I am. I cannot bear to see into an unsuspecting mind, or watch a sweet young face grow old. * * * And then you invented computers. First silly bleeping wooden things, then glowing abacus', children's toys ... and finally objects to run the world. You invented ways of linking them, talking with them ... and now this. Kymer is my empire. The first time I have been equal for hundreds of year. People are cartoons - you cannot tell who or what people are from looks - no-one has an age - no-one can die. I talk to people and I am a million miles away from them - my mind is silent - their thoughts cannot invade mine. I can converse like a normal person again. I will live in Kymer until your civilization invents something better. And you will invent something better ... this is just the beginning of something wonderful. Your science has found a way for me to survive until your science invents a way for me to die. But I must go. My crops and animals need tending....and I hear the thoughts of my supply delivery man coming closer. He is troubled about a bill - I must be there to give him money. **Sigh** So much time ... and yet still so much to do. Adieu, I have said too much already, and forever beckons. {!} - How Lady Midnight came to Kymer - {!} by Lady Midnight Third Prize Winner Lady Midnight is not my real name. I had to take this name when I entered Kymer, for reasons I will tell you shortly. My real name is Zirana of the Underworld. My Master is Hades, King of the Underworld. I have a very important position in the Underworld as Chief Receiver of Newly-Dead Souls. It is a very responsible job, as I am the first person the dead people encounter after they enter the realm of the Underworld. I am in charge of the whole of the Reception area, and I have to make sure that each new soul is seen personally by myself or a member of my staff. The souls are brought across the River Styx by Charon, the miserly Ferryman. The relatives would place a coin in the dead person's mouth as payment for the journey. If the dead person turns up with no payment, then Charon will leave them there on the far side of the bank. After alighting on this side of the river, the souls have to pass by Cerebus, the hell-hound, who is always on guard at the entrance to the Underworld to make sure no unauthorised persons can enter. Then they pass through to the reception area, to be greeted by myself and my staff. We give each one a counselling session, to prepare them for their new existence in the Underworld. Some of them are very bewildered, and don't even realise that they are dead, and they keep pleading to be allowed to return. Some of them get extremely angry, and have to be talked to gently until they calm down. I particularly remember one individual, by the name of Wenton Firespul. The dead souls retain the appearance of their Earthly bodies, although, of course, they are no longer alive. This person had flaming red hair and a bushy red beard, and he had a very aggressive manner. He kept arguing with me, saying that it was a big mistake, and he shouldn't really have been there. His eyes kept darting around, as if he was looking for something, and he started asking me all kinds of questions about how the Underworld was laid out, and he wanted to know about how Hades governed his kingdom. I told him what I thought he wanted to know, without giving away too much, and then led him through to the next stage of his journey through the Underworld. After the dead souls have passed through my reception area, they are taken to the three judges, Minos, Rhadamanthys and Aeacus at a place where three roads meet. There they are judged to be good, evil, or neutral, that is, neither wholly good nor wholly evil. The good souls are sent to the Elysium Orchards. It is a happy land of perpetual day without cold or snow, where games, music and revels never cease, and where the inhabitants may choose to be reborn on Earth whenever they please. The evil souls are sent to Tartarus, which is a place of punishment. The neutral souls go to the Asphodel Meadows. Here they continue in a shadowy existence of their former lives, wandering aimlessly forever. Beyond these regions lies the Palace of Hades and Persephone, his wife. Hades seldom visits the upper realms, except on business, and so he never knows what is happening in the world above, except for fragmentary information which comes to him when mortals sometimes invoke him with curses. His most prized possession is the Helmet of Invisibility, given to him by the Cyclopes as a mark of gratitude, when he released them from the Underworld on Zeus' orders. This Helmet was the cause of my being sent to Kymer. It had always been kept under strict security in the treasure vault of Hades' Palace. Whenever Hades wanted to wear it to visit the Earthly realm he would send for it to be brought to him. I was in the middle of a consultation with Hades, showing him my reports on the state of the Realm, and the latest figures for the newly-dead, when there was a knock on the door of the chamber. On hearing Hades' permission to enter, a messenger came nervously into the room, and stood before us, shuffling his feet. "Well Garvik!" boomed Hades. "Where is my Helmet?" "Oh Master", answered the man. "I don't know what to say to you ... your Helmet ..." "Stop babbling you fool. What about my Helmet? Give it to me at once. I need it." "Master, your Helmet ... it's gone!" "Gone! What do you mean, gone? How can it be gone?" "But it is, Master. I went down to the vault as you commanded. I thought it strange that there were no guards by the entrance, and I couldn't imagine why they would have left their posts. The door was not locked either, as it should have been. I went into the Vault and walked over to the crystal case that holds your Helmet. The case had been broken into and the helmet was missing. As I turned to come out of the Vault, I noticed two pools of grey slime on the floor near the entrance door. I'm not sure what they were, but they smelt really foul, Master." On hearing this, Hades flew into a rage and ordered poor Garvik to be sent to Tartarus for punishment, although I could not see how it could possibly have been his fault that the Helmet was stolen. I stood there, quaking with fear, convinced that I was going to be the next one to suffer from his wrath. Instead he started pacing up and down the room, thinking. After a while he stopped, and turned to look at me. "Oh no!" I thought. "What punishment has he got in store for me, I wonder?" "Zirana, I want you to find out who has taken my Helmet", announced Hades, to my utter astonishment. "M-me, my L-lord? But what makes you think that I could find it for you?" I stammered. "You are the one person who can go throughout my kingdom without question, in your capacity as coordinator and liaison officer. You know everyone, and they would not think it strange if you said you were there on business. You also see all the new arrivals from Earth. Now listen, this is what I want you to do." * * * Some time later, I emerged from Hades' chamber, my head spinning and my heart pounding. Hades was expecting me to find out who had taken his helmet, and I dare not fail, for fear that I would meet the same fate as Garvik. My orders were to go into each area of the Underworld, on some pretext of business, and keep my ears and eyes open for anything that might give me a clue as to what had happened. I decided to start with Tartarus, the place where the evil souls were sent to be punished. As I drew nearer, I could smell the acrid fumes of sulphur and brimstone coming towards me. I was stopped at the entrance by the guard, Creon. He had a massive body, with a head that looked much too small for it. He carried a pitchfork in his hand. "Halt, Zirana!" he commanded. "State your business here." "I have been ordered by Hades to make a count of the number of evil souls currently in Tartarus," I told him. "there seems to be some discrepancy in my records." "Very well, then, Zirana, pass through." He stood aside while I walked through the portal. I walked warily down the grey ash path, choking on the sulphur fumes. I had not previously had much cause to come into this particular region, and I was glad. I noticed a green glow emanating from the area ahead and to the left. I proceeded to the corner and looked cautiously into the compound ahead. There was a large pit in the centre. From this, green flames were thrusting their spikes high into the air. My ears were assaulted by a loud and terrible screaming. As I looked, I could make out the shapes of souls in torment, writhing in the centre of the green inferno. I backed out hastily, and went further along the path. In the next compound was a red pit, containing more souls in agony, screaming and wailing for all eternity. By the time I had seen the purple, blue and yellow pits, I was convinced that I would not find the thief here in Tartarus. These tortured souls would never escape from their fiery prison. I bade farewell to Creon as I made my way back along the road to the next region, the Asphodel fields, where the neutral souls were held. Again I made the excuse to the guard that I wished to check up on the records, and walked into the fields. It was a very depressing place to be in. No one smiled or laughed or seemed interested in anything. Souls wandered aimlessly about, sometimes conversing with each other in a completely lacklustre manner. I followed groups of them, with my record book in my hand, pretending to be counting, but really I was listening for any snippet of conversation that would perhaps tell me something about the helmet. Most of the conversations went along these lines: "Greetings, Alecto. Is there anything happening today?" "No, Eronyous, nothing." "I will just walk on for a while then." "Yes, I will do the same." I was just about to leave in despair, when a movement caught my eye. There was a group of about four or five souls together, and one of them seemed to be telling the others something which they found interesting. This was unusual indeed! I made my way as inconspicuously as possible towards them until I could overhear what was being said. "... odd-looking ... wild eyes ... red hair..." "... and then he took some kind of strange implement out of his pocket..." "... the guard ... powerless ... walked straight out..." "...vanished..." They saw me trying to overhear, and at once began to revert to their usual topic of conversation. I pondered this for a while, wondering what they could have meant. It sounded as if someone had actually got out of the Asphodel fields. How they had managed to get past the guard, I could not imagine. Indeed I could not imagine that any of the souls in this place would even bother to try getting out, they were all so apathetic. That meant that this particular individual was probably not even supposed to have been here in the first place. I walked back towards the entrance gates, deep in thought. I stopped when I saw the guard, and asked, " Phemius, has anything out-of-the ordinary occurred in here recently?" His eyes suddenly took on a glazed appearance, and he answered, "No, Zirana, nothing at all." His tone of voice was very strange, as one would sound if speaking in one's sleep, and I looked at him sharply. At once, he seemed to pull himself together and asked me "Well, Zirana, have you completed your report?" "Yes thank you, Phemius. I'll be on my way. Goodbye." I walked along the road to the place where it met with the other two roads, and I saw the three judges with a batch of new souls to assess. I walked quickly past without interrupting them, and started along the path that led to Elysium, where the good souls are privileged to dwell. Elysium does not strictly form part of Hades dominions, but it lies nearby, being ruled over by Chonus, the son of Heaven and Earth, and father of Zeus and Hades. I could have no official business in Elysium, as it is outside Hades' control, but Chronus was well-known to me as a personal friend, and I felt sure I could be candid with him about why I was here. The guard at the beautiful jewelled golden gates greeted me as I approached. "Salutations to you Zirana! Shall I inform my Master that you are here?" "Greetings to you, Thestor," I answered. "Please tell him that I have important matters to discuss." Thestor spoke into a large sea-shell shaped object, which was his means of communication with Chronus. Then he held it to his ear and listened. "Very well, he says you are to proceed onwards to the palace. He will have an attendant meet you outside." "Thank you Thestor," I nodded to him and passed through the gates. As I walked towards the palace, I could hear the sound of sweet music and singing. The fragrant scent of flowers was all around, and I breathed in appreciatively, mentally comparing it with the terrible stench of Tartarus. Elysium was truly a beautiful place to be. The sky was always blue, and the air was always pleasantly warm. On reaching the Palace, I spoke briefly with the attendant who came to meet me, and was then taken to Chronus' private chamber. He smiled appreciatively when he saw me and took a few steps toward me, hands outstretched. "Zirana, how wonderful to see you. Beautiful as always, you don't visit me often enough, you know. To what do I owe this honour?" "You flatter me my Lord," I bowed to him. I knew that Chronus had more than a little interest in me, and in the past I had used this to my advantage. I hoped to do the same on this occasion. "I was hoping that you would be able to assist me in my quest, my Lord," I began. "It will take someone of your great wisdom and intelligence to solve this mystery." "Now who's the flatterer?" smiled Chronus. "But go on, my dear, you know I will always help you in any way I can." I told him of my mission to find the Helmet of Invisibility, and how I had overheard a conversation in the Asphodel fields which gave me cause to believe that the thief might have come this way. As I came to the end of my story, I noticed that he was looking thoughtful. "You said you overheard someone say that he person in question had bright red hair?" Chronus asked. "Yes, at least I think that's what he said, it wasn't really very clear," I admitted. "Someone answering that description entered here very recently. I must admit I thought he did not seem like the usual types we get in here. I wondered about him, but as he must have been sent here by the judges, I thought I must have been mistaken. Perhaps you should go into the Realm and ask some questions. I will give you a Letter of Authority in case you are challenged." He went to a bureau and took out paper, a quill and some ink. After writing a few lines, and waiting for it to dry, he gave it to me. "There, Zirana, you can produce this if necessary, it explains that you are on business for me." "Thank you, my Lord Chronus. I will come back and tell you what I discover." And I turned to go, as he summoned the attendant to escort me off the premises. Walking through the Elysium Orchards, I saw groups of happy people chatting and laughing with each other. Some were eating the delicious fruit from the many trees. Everywhere there were beautiful colours, and wonderful sights. I took a red, juicy apple from a laughing woman who offered it to me, and bit deeply into it. It was the most delicious fruit I had ever tasted. All the time, I was looking around me, searching for a glimpse of bright red hair, and trying hard to remember why that had sounded familiar to me. Suddenly it came to me ... Wenton Firespul! The shifty-eyed obnoxious creature I had spent such a difficult time convincing that he was dead! He had bright red hair, and a bushy red beard. I was certain that this was the person I was looking for. If he had taken Hades' Helmet, and I caught him, he would be sent straight to the punishment pits of Tartarus, to burn for eternity. Hades would be so grateful to me that he would reward me handsomely. I started asking various people if they had seen such a person in Elysium. I knew that if he was to wear the Helmet himself, it would only give him temporary invisibility, as he was not the rightful owner, so I was certain that someone must have seen him. I was just asking a young man about it, when there was a commotion on the other side of the apple orchard. I spun round to see what was happening. I caught a brief glimpse of red hair, and then suddenly, it was gone. I rushed over to the knot of people that were standing around a large round platform with a shimmering veil around it. "What's happening here?" I asked. "It seems to me as if someone has just used the rebirth portal" This portal is one of three that exist in Elysium for the inhabitants to use when they wish to be reborn on Earth. First they must be interviewed by Chronus, who will ascertain that they are ready to be born again. Then they are allowed to use one of the portals. There is usually a celebration when this occurs, because everyone is happy for the person who is to return to Earth. This time, there was no celebration, just a crowd of people, some looking surprised, others looking angry. "He used the portal without permission!" exclaimed a woman. "He was wearing a helmet of some kind, and he kept fading and reappearing again. He had some sort of instrument in his hand with which he opened the portal. Then he just stepped inside it and vanished." "Tell me," I asked excitedly, "did he have red hair and a bushy red beard? This helmet he was wearing, was it black with silver and red markings on it?" "Yes," she answered, "that's right." "I knew it! " I exclaimed. "Wenton Firespul! He has escaped to Earth with Hades' Helmet of Invisibility! I must go immediately and report this matter to Chronus, and then to my Master, Hades." I turned and went quickly back to Chronus' Palace and told him what had occurred. He was very angry. "How did this person get into Elysium?" he stormed. "It is reserved entirely for good souls. This Wenton Firespul is obviously not a good soul if he has stolen Hades' Helmet. It sounds very much as if he has found a way to escape from Asphodel, where he was sent in the first place, and has infiltrated his way in here. But how has he done this? The security is very good." "Several times I have heard tell of some kind of instrument that he was holding in his hand. It must have been used to overcome the guards, and to operate the portal. I really cannot understand how it came to be in his possession. All Earthly objects are left behind when a person enters the Afterlife." "Could it be that he was not really dead, and he somehow managed to sneak his way into the Underworld by means of this instrument he carries? If this is so, it has never happened before, and there will have to be a full investigation. I suggest that you now go back to your Master, to inform him of what has occurred here." I was very nervous as I made my way back to Hades' palace. I was sure that he would hold me to blame in some way, and I was dreading the punishment he would have in store for me. On arrival the guard let me in and I was shown to Hades' chamber. I knocked on the door, and was told to enter. I made a full report of what had transpired, and waited with bated breath, for the storm that was certain to erupt. Hades was not known for his even temper! "You were the first person to see this thief, Zirana. Why did you not see that he was an impostor? A person with your experience should have been able to tell that straight away." I looked at the floor. "I really don't know, Master. I'm sorry." "SORRY! SORRY! You allow my precious helmet to be stolen and you're sorry? Well I am afraid that 'sorry' just isn't good enough, Zirana. You will have to make amends for this, or I will have you taken to Tartarus." "Oh Master, please, not that! I'll do anything! Perhaps you could send me to Earth so that I could find him there, and get your Helmet back for you." "If he has gone through the Elysium Portal, he would have been re-born on Earth, and would have to start over again as a baby. But If he was not dead in the first place, this cannot happen. I will have to consult with the other Gods in Olympus to find out if any of them know where he will have gone. Go back to your post now. I will summon you later." * * * Much later, I was summoned back to appear before Hades. I was very apprehensive as to what would become of me. I entered the chamber and stood there, waiting. "Well," said Hades, "It appears that he would have gone not directly to Earth, but to a realm known as Kymer. This is ruled over by the god Morpheus. It is a place not unlike Elysium where there is fun and laughter with games and revels. There is perpetual day there, like Elysium, and the weather is always pleasant. However, all the inhabitants are not good, like they are in Elysium. Morpheus created this realm as a kind of experiment to see how a community would develop if people were sent there to live their lives without any rules or regulations set for them. People are taken from Earth at random, in their sleep, and sent to live in Kymer. Morpheus watches the happenings there, but refuses to interfere in any way with events that occur, preferring to watch and see what will happen to the community as time goes on. At first, all the people were very good and kind to each other, but gradually, things are beginning to change. Crimes are occurring with more and more regularity, and some people seem to like nothing better than to cause trouble for others. This is the place to which I am sending you. You will not return to the Underworld until you have found my Helmet and brought back both it and Wenton Firespul to me. I shall place your second-in command in charge of your duties in the meantime. " Hades summoned a guard who took me to Hades personal astral transference machine. I found myself on the deck of a ship, sailing through a calm blue sea. I walked around the deck for a while, and realised that I was alone on board. I found a parrot in the single cabin, who kept saying things like "Charlie wants a cracker!" I saw a chest on the floor, and when I opened it, I found some gold coins inside, which I took and placed in my pocket. I looked in the mirror on the wall and had a shock when I realised that the face looking back at me was not my own, but a rather ugly-looking visage that could have been either male or female. I went back on deck, and realised that the ship was just landing at the shore of an island. "I suppose this is Kymer," I thought to myself. "I hope I won't have to walk around with a face like this. I wonder if there's anything I can do to make it look better?" The ship had landed, and I walked on to a kind of covered walkway. There were various machines placed at intervals along the walls, and I went to see what they were. The first one said "Automatic Token Machine. Check your balance here." I pressed the button, and a message lit up saying "You have 50T in your account". I took these tokens and went on to the next. This said "Body Machine. Choose your body. Free." I pressed the button and looked at the various types of body on offer. finally settling on one that had a nicely-toned athletic look to it. The next machine said "Head machine. Choose a new head. 50T" I looked at the heads, and chose the least ugly one and put it on. At least it was an improvement on the one I had before! Next, there was a book on a pedestal, with a notice saying, "Please enter your name in the book. This is the name you will be known as during your stay in Kymer." I thought about this for a while, and decided that I could not use my real name, for fear of being recognised by Wenton Firespul. I finally chose the name "Lady Midnight", and then walked through the double doors at the end of the walkway, and out into the city. These are the events that led to my becoming a citizen of Kymer. I am still looking for Wenton Firespul. Sometimes I think that I have found him, but it always turns out to be a false alarm. In the meantime, I have made many new friends and I am enjoying my new life. I cannot return to the Underworld without Hades' Helmet, or I will be thrown into one of the fire pits of Tartarus. I don't know how much longer Hades will wait for me, but I have a feeling that if I don't return soon with some results. He will come and get me and take me back for punishment. {!} - How Usagi Arrived in Kymer - {!} by Usagi Third Prize Winner The dawn was breaking, and its first rays turned the dew into countless gems, sparkling across the field in which I was lying. The midnight blue of the sky had already given way to pinks, oranges and crimsons, and as the daybreak fire died away, was now moving inexorably towards its daytime livery. All in all, a very fine sunrise, and all the more memorable because it was extremely likely that it would be the last I'd ever see. Not a hundred feet away, a horse stood motionless, black against the sunrise. Its rider scanned the landscape, his ornate helmet giving his silhouette the appearance of some predatory beast. Off in the distance, another horseman was making his way across the field at a slow canter. No need to rush; they knew I could not have made it to the woods beyond - even ninja cannot outrun horses over a distance of several miles. Ah, the romance of the ninja! Invisible at will, shadow warriors who strike from nowhere and vanish without trace. Regrettably, my pursuers had no romance in their souls and were profoundly unconvinced by the supernatural powers which terrified their overlord's peasants. Or - more accurately - the peasants of their very recently deceased overlord. Having failed to prevent my ushering their daimyo into the next life, his two devoted guards were now intent on partial atonement by sending me along the same path. With the light becoming brighter by the minute, the tall grasses in which I lay, and the close fitting black suit which I wore, would not serve as camouflage for much longer. In this terrain, to be seen was to be a very simple target for a samurai on horseback - especially one armed with a bow as well as a katana. And of course, as well as daybreak there was the rabbit to consider. As I had hurtled headlong across the field, the wind had carried the sound of the horses' hooves to me. I had dived into the nearest cover, and had not realised until the riders were out in the open that I had thoughtlessly chosen to land across the entrance to a rabbit's burrow. This had come as a surprise to me, but far more so to the rabbit, who had been on the point of returning home. In his surprise, he had frozen on the spot, and was clearly pondering his next move. Some eighteen inches separated us as our eyes met and held each others' gaze. A rabbit staring into a flaming torch will sometimes seem to lose itself in the light; it may be that the sunrise, reflecting from my eyes, had the same effect. However, I knew that I would be foolish to rely on this unnatural stillness; I also knew that once the rabbit turned tail and ran, the nearer of the horsemen would surely look for the source of the disturbance - and would all too surely find it. Slowly, so very slowly, I edged my left hand nearer and nearer to the motionless animal, expecting each moment that the spell would break, and a sudden flurry of movement would bring my death down upon me. But no, the stillness held and with one final swift grab, I had the rabbit's neck in my grasp. And still our eyes were locked. I knew that, for my own survival, I must tighten my grasp and watch the life in those eyes dim and then finally extinguish. It would be no new experience for me; I had already brought the lives of twenty-eight men to a premature conclusion, and of those at least a dozen had breathed their last as I looked on. If death can be a fact of life, then so it was for me, and for all who followed my profession. And yet, I felt a strange unwillingness to add this one small death to my tally. There was a time when the ninja could claim that he only used his skills for the protection of himself and his loved ones. In those early days, the foothills of Mount Iga were regularly a hunting ground for Oda Nobunaga and hundreds of his soldiers, intent on wiping out the peasant villages who dared resist him and his fellow overlords. He reckoned, of course, without the shadow warriors who struck from cover, and vanished again like ghosts. As more and more of his soldiers went into the foothills and did not return, Nobunaga swore his revenge, and finally prevailed - by surrounding the entire mountain with a steel circle of armed men, and putting the land to the torch. Women, children, the crippled and the old, all perished at Nobunaga's hands that day. Enough of the shadow warriors escaped, however, to keep the skills alive, and pass them on to future generations. Nobunaga died soon after the massacre at Iga - the victim of an assassin's arrow. Many years had passed since then, and nowadays ninja are nothing more than killers for hire by the highest bidder. The finest killers money can buy, of course - but mere assassins none the less. Till now, that had never worried me unduly; each of my victims would, I imagine, have availed themselves of my services, or the services of one of my brethren, without a qualm and if I thought at all about it, I saw a kind of justice in their demise. But the rabbit - that somehow didn't feel right at all. I remember thinking it over, quite dispassionately. I could justify killing the rabbit to save myself if my life was more valuable than his. But was it? If I lived, and he died, I could carry on until my luck ran out, and maybe add another dozen or two to my tally. If he lived, and I died, the world would be the richer by one rabbit today, and he probably could add another dozen or two to his tally in the future. Suddenly, I felt very tired, and twenty-eight seemed a very large number. In that instant, I decided that the world needed rabbits more than it needed assassins. I slackened my grasp, and turned my eyes away. Sure enough, the rabbit bolted. My eyes snapped back to the horseman; even though I had accepted the inevitability of my impending death, a lifetime of training still had me looking for any possibility of delaying that outcome. It was at that moment that time slipped a cog, and events began to unfold in slow motion. The rabbit had run straight out between the front legs of the horse. Startled, it reared up, and its rider lost one stirrup, slumping sideways as he struggled to control his mount. It took me a fraction of a heartbeat to cover the distance between us, hurling myself across the last ten feet, and driving two knuckles into the biceps of his sword arm. His grip on the reins, previously precarious, now failed him altogether and he fell from the saddle, only to receive a hoof to the throat as his horse raked the ground in terror. He lay still, and I could see that he would offer me no threat for some time to come. I made a grab for the reins, caught them and pulled myself into the saddle. The second guard, seeing the flurry of activity, came galloping straight towards me. Taken by surprise, he had neglected to ready an arrow, and was now relying on speed to ride me down, and finish the matter with his sword. A shuriken, flying within inches of his face made him swerve frantically aside; the ninja "death stars" tend to unnerve those who have heard of the lethal poisons with which their points are allegedly coated. His change of direction gave me the opening I needed, and I reached the edge of the woodlands with scant seconds to spare, diving into cover just in time to avoid the arrow that came humming past my ear. He had courage. He followed me into the woods for several minutes before the inevitable occurred, and he lost me. In that terrain, it would have been so easy to outflank him and finish the matter, but I no longer had any desire to add a twenty ninth victim to the list. I moved silently through the woods, and a day and a half later arrived at the coast, having acquired a less distinctive outfit from a clothesline en route. My sword, shuriken and other exotic odds and ends fetched a respectable price in the port, and the captain of the ship anchored at the quayside was very reasonable in his charges for passage. So that is how I came to Kymer, and why I signed the Book of Names as "Usagi" - the Rabbit. The Dreamscape has, after all, no need of assassins. {!} - TG's Hatemail No.9 - {!} by Throbbing Gristle HMS How nice it is. At least, this week I have the chance to be busy with something completely different. Right: it's the Empire. I've been looking for this opportunity for a very long time. The reader's letter, written by Spitbrother last week, has scratched the surface again, and naturally the opinions were quite different. Hanging out in the community forum during the last server-crash, I received the following message from a non-german-speaking avatar, sorry I can only sum up the content, cause it was not recorded: "Spit and you are doing well, cuz you are germans. I would do that, I would be suspected to do it, cause I might hate germans. You stand for your affairs." I think, at least we try. Myrical Bernd, the not all-innocent victim of last weeks activities, has sent his answer to the ESP!, which I will offer you here and now. (My comments on this in the end). Letter ------ Hatemail? No, an article to think about it Journalists are first of all obligated to report honestly and to ivestigate thoroughly. That's what I was thinking as a beginning journalist. But in WA it looks as this is not the truth. There are would-be-writers and I count DA MIGHTEE SPITBROTHER and THROBBING GRISTLE among them. Without making the trouble of making thorough investigations DA MIGHTEE was writing an article. Not a single time he tried to ESP me, not a single mail arrived in my mailbox, although my avatar-name and my E-mail-address was known to him. If he had done such sloppiness in RW he would have been fired at once. He didn't want to search for the truth. The article was nothing more than a propaganda-writing against the Empire. He is not open-minded against the Empire, that can be seen without any problem. How can we expect a neutral article then? I expect a certain neutrality from a newspaper which can be read theoretically by millions of readers. Certainly it was a big mistake to name the info-file as I had and I hereby apologise for this. By the way: the file-name was changed only one day later in: "german speaking Empire starts activities". With the first name I used the terminology of a former Empire-infofile. It's name was "The Empire awakening". Does the reader recognizes something? There was only a "german" added to this file-name. Why? Well it was a file which should inform about the first activities of the german- speaking part of the Empire. These activities are games and translations of the Empire-files into german. An enorm distress for those avatars who don't speak that good english. I don't see any faschistoid processes of reasoning behind these activities. Strange. I thought I would live at the edge to the 21st century. But still the past, the german past catches me. It's not in Germany that this happens. No involvement of neonazis. No, it is an article in the ESP!, which sets me back to a time which I thought for myself to be finished. I will try to explain why. Many times I saw videos and pictures about the deeds of horror from the german nazis in World War 2. I was in Dachau und saw what was left of the cruel machinery with which people were punished and murdered. I was disgusted by the cruelty. How can man be so inhuman, how could a whole nation have done something like that? I felt ashamed. In history-class they taught never to forget the past. I never did. I learned from the mistakes that were made at that time. I am an open-minded young man and I have many contacts to the so-called "races" (I hate that word). I have a friendship with a black american woman, with people from the Philippines and from Croatia. I once fell in love with an asian girl. I like to be together with these people, because they are, totally different to the germans, much more open-minded und charming. I am not proud to be a german. In fact I see myself as a world-citizen. I thought this dream as a world-citizen fulfilled as I entered Worlds Away. Finally I was able to talk with the people without thinking about borders. It was totally equal whether they looked good or not, whether they were old or not. It was that equal as it always had been before to me. Only the human sympathy was important for liking or disliking. I wanted to make something so that this dream could be dreamed on. I began helping newbies, I hosted online-games, spended many tokens. But I felt that this wasn't enough. I wanted to make more activities. The Empire came into sight. I was pleased by the jobs which I was able to make there. The ranking-system was totally equal to me. Nobody wanted to make a homepage. So I started with the knowledge from my personal homepage in the background and developed this project. Then an information-file came. Subdivisions were named in there. I proposed to found such a subdivision for the germanspeaking avatars. I hesitated a long time before I accepted the promotion to king and leader of this subdivision. I began my work and developed concepts. The first conferences about the game-schedule and the translations began and I got many postive reactions. It was fun as all Worlds Away was fun to me. But the fun ceased as the article came out. I know that DA MIGHTEE SPITBROTHER wants to point out that his statements were only meant for the whole Empire. But he attacked myself. In the english ESP! he named me DUDE. In german this is a hard abusive word. He doesn't know me and and doesn't have ANY interest of getting to know me. There are many avatars in Worlds Away who say that I have a good character. I am afraid I cannot return this compliment to DA MIGHTEE SPITBROTHER. But now I will go to the accusations against the Empire and try to analyze them. The tactic "Lurking-in-da-cloud-till-black-avatar- dude-comes-then-get-the-troops-landed-to-save-the-newbie", what's so bad about it? You come your way by chance when a thief tries to rip off a newbie who hasn't any knowledge about those guys. You are underway as a ghost as this is the fastest way to get around. You come down in order to help the newbie. So, whats wrong about this? Should you let the thief do his work? That would be helping him. Gestapo in Kymer? That is propaganda. Which country has no secret service? The USA have their CIA. Is that a gestapo? Make ONE good proposal how we can stop the thiefs in Worlds Away, we will use it. The KAFA is nonsense. The Empire is NOT fascist OR fascistoid. To make it clear what is behind the word fascistoid: "more or less related to fascism; also: leading to fascism." Do you know that old word: Where a fire-brigade is there will also come a fire. Why do we still need those old-fashioned processes of reasoning? Antifascists, fascists. With the KAFA we would have the fire-brigade but the fire is not in sight and the Empire is truly not the fire. Some words to the talk which was recorded. Here too it is obvious that the makers of the ESP don't make thorough journalism. The name of the avatar is known to the redaction. But he was never asked why he joined the Empire. But they say they know it. They are pretending because of the "put a medal on your jacket". I know it better and I know who this avatar was. He has entered because he read the information-file and was able to identify himself with the goals of the Empire. It is true that you have to find out for yourself whether the goals of a group are the same as your own. But to find out you HAVE to read the information-files once. But the authors haven't done that. On the contrary. They ONLY saw a file name. That is, what I call pure propagandism. They search for the smallest thing they can hang their arguments on. That is no journalism. They work with the most bad yellow-press-methods. In the Badischen Neuesten Nachrichten, the local newspaper in which I work, I would have been fired for this at once. I will no longer belong to the Empire, starting on the 12th of July. Not that I can no longer identify myself with it, but to stop the muddy fight. I know that I have made a mistake and I stand to it. In order to provide the reader with the possibility to make something to which DA MIGHTEE SPITBROTHER and THROBBING GRISTLE where either not willing or capable, I hereby provide my E-mail-address, my avatar-name and the address of my personal homepage: Bernd Glasstetter Mirical Bernd EMP K (ab 12. Juli Mirical Bernd) 101622.1230@compuserve.com bzw. 101622,1230 http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/cmdmiricalbernd **************END OF TEXT TG's reply: So. I'm filled with deep joy to see, that, after having stomped on the monuments feet long enough, finally even the professionals come out to be heard. Sad, that from the Empire's side a reaction only seems to be possible, if somebody feels hurt personally. If I was a member of that group, I certainly would have reacted on my first article here in ESP! ... but... well (f8). More Concrete: 1st:DA MIGHTEE SPITBROTHER was named nowhere as a member of the ESP! staff or even as a journalist. It was a reader's letter, and I take readers' letters as they were written, as you can judge. If people feel the urge to have their opinion published I really love to offer my space in ESP! for this, because ESP! is, as written in the Logo above, YOUR soapbox. This is true for Spit as well as for Bernd as for anybody else who reads this. But only those who talk loud will be the ones that get paid attention. Those who stay silent just give their silent approval to the writen. Spitbrother has spoken. I have also spoken. Now, you have spoken too. The fact that I add my comments to this is what I regard as my self evident right, because we, who make the ESP! are sitting here all over the weekend, busy to put together a new issue. About being open-minded versus the empire: True, I am no more. I lost it a while ago, out in the streets of Kymer. AFTER this, we started to take a closer look at this club. 2nd: Completely true. We are amateurs. And that's exactly the reason why I do not feel myself bound to anything, except to my right of free expression of opinion. We do not get paid for this, neither in Token, Dollar or DM, and we do also have a profession during the week, that takes away a little bit of time we can spend on this here. This might result in the fact that I do not find any time to research any private people. I thought that I already said in my former articles, that I do not claim to be talking the opinion of the ESP!. If you take a look at the beginning of this paper here, you will find the note, that the articles issued in ESP! do not necessarily represent the opinion of its makers. If I am not all wrong, THIS is a demonstration of democratic values, or did I misunderstand these completely? I am sure, doing this in a german RW-newspaper, would certainly cause me to be fired sooner or later. 3rd: Professionalism. If I was editor of a newspaper which is free to an audience of millions, and I would have a journalist writing an article named "The german empire awakens", I certainly would have fired exactly THIS person. I really do believe that Myrical Bernd has made a very stupid mistake when naming his file like this, but if he introduces himself as a coming professional, and that's what he does in his article, I would expect him NOT to make such mistakes even MORE. It is simply not true that the file was replaced the next day already, for several days passed inbetween the time that Spitbrother brought my attention to this file in the library and the day that I downloaded it. Completely true is that we were not busy talking about the contents of that file. The was nothing to be critized about the contents, so why should we have done? (elseway I WOULD have done, be sure). 4th: True, our attacks are directed at the Empire as an organization, not against any private persons involved in it. How come that lots of people, as well such that do not read ESP!, have started similar discussions in the streets or Kymer or the Forum? Why does Kymer need a "secret service"? Aren't these secret services doubtful enough in their home countries? (if I would start telling my opinion about organizations like the CIA I would probably be dead next week, so I better leave that out) ... and to whom would this secret service be responsible? To the state of Kymer? To the oracles? To the empire-big boss? And why did this secret service pick up any old structures of monarchy? True, I felt like being confronted with the pastime too, when I read the Imperial. Here in Kymer too ... it seems like we are not THAT different from each other, except that I see a difference between "passing by as a ghost by chance" and hanging in the ghostcloud for a long while to record conversations, watching people and interrogate these people later. Yes I know, sometimes I do that too now. But this is reaction, since I found an aim and a reason to do this. 5th: About the short conversation in the end of my article: Wrong. The avatar was questioned about it, and that was the exact content of the conversation I published ... whats that nonsense? That the avatar "Unnamed" did not make any further replies at that point, was not my fault. I tried to get it at last. If he would have said more about it, my reprint of the conversation would have been longer too. A little hint about this: TG has several avatars. and one of them is named Dolores Haze. Anybody here noticing something? In general: My "german past" is following me to wherever I go, never comes to an end. I really would have been pleased to read your opinion about this in ESP! earlier, maybe as an reaction to my earlier work here, like Hatemail 3, which was in one of the earlier ESP! issues. But there, your reactions did not reach me. Nobody was feeling hurt personally. Though I like to thank you for your statement about being a citizen of the world, this honestly is what I would like to read in these pages and what I also do claim for myself, so I really liked issuing this part of your letter. Too bad that the incident for which it was done did not have a better reason. THE ESSENCE: The Empire may not be the fire as Myrical Bernd said. But the fact alone, that so many people have started making their thoughts about the Empire meanwhile, should be a reason for the Empire's officials to start thinking about their system and their appearance in public. If they have started, some things might change in the future. If the only thing they do is feeling personally hurt and then go into selfdefense, I pity them. Its not worth wasting anybody's energies on this then. Uhmm ...well ... For more opinions about this I will be thankful. Where are those avatars who were discussing this eagerly in the streets and in the forum? Morpheus may bless your cotton-socks, that's it for this week, TG. {!} - Tarot Majik - Unraveling the Knots - {!} By Hierophant SRK, facilitator of the Sunray Majik Guild Hannah wants to be a better person (and what makes her think she's worse?) "Hannah. You look wilted. Your pretty rose head looks like it's going to droop off your shoulders." "I've been kind of down lately. I don't feel like I'm doing anything right." "Oh no! You couldn't do anything wrong if you tried! You're the picture of perfection," Phred said. "Now come on and smile, just a little smile, please?" Hannah brightened up a bit. "Oh Phred. You're too kind. I wish I could be that kind to myself." "Hannah! You're not beating up on yourself are you?" "That's a good way to put it Phred. I've been thinking what a rotten person I must be. Everything I do displeases someone or another." "Of course," Phred said. "No matter what you do, it's easy to find people who would have done it differently. The only way to completely avoid disagreement is to stand still and do absolutely nothing. And even then, someone would criticize you for being lazy." "Well. That's depressing," Hannah pouted. "Yes it is. So the best bet is not to worry about everybody's opinion. Instead of checking with everyone to see if you are doing the right thing, you need to find your own value within yourself, and then honor that value." "I'd like to do that. It sounds very sane. But my mind relentlessly focuses on my own faults." "Do you seek out faults in other people?" "No. I think everyone is doing fine except me." "Then instead of worrying about measuring up to their criticism, just measure up to their actions. That shouldn't be any trouble for you. You're a very nice person." "I don't know Phred. I feel like I'll never be as good as everyone else." "Hannah. This is exasperating. You're hanging on to defeat like it's your prize. Come on, now. Take a break from this endless loop of self pity. Let's ask the Tarot how to be a good person. Perhaps we can think about this from a more positive perspective." "Oh, good. That's always fun. Perhaps I can get some ideas that will help me see myself in a brighter light." Phred drew the Tarot deck out of its forest green paisley pouch. After concentrating for a moment he said, "Okay. Let's ask the Tarot how you can be a better person without beating yourself up." Hannah selected eleven cards at random from the deck, and Phred placed them in a pattern. After a few moments of thoughtful silence Phred said, "Wow. That's wild. Right there in the position that reflects the 'signi- ficator' or 'asker of the question' is the Universe card. That card shows the very peak of inner enlightenment." "Well, I certainly don't feel very enlightened. It must mean you," Hannah said. "Hannah, please stop putting yourself down and pay attention," Phred said with a gentle twinkle in his eye. "It means that complete enlightenment is within you, waiting to be discovered." "Inside me?" Hannah asked in astonishment. "What makes it so hard to see?" "We're all so caught up in circumstances, opinions, and pressures that most of us don't take the time to see the peace within ourselves. Even if we make the effort to look for it, it's a lifelong struggle to see past all of the distractions." "It sounds good, but I'm not sure I buy it," Hannah said. "I'm such a mess. I can't even imagine finding peace and light within myself." "Don't worry, Hannah. You'll get it. Let's look at some more of the reading. This really is interesting. The card on the right of the significator, in the position called 'past and passing', is the Eight of Ankhs. The world is persecuting the man pictured on the card. Sometimes we laugh at persecution, thinking it is the ravings of the mentally ill. But persecution can be real, too, and that's what is represented in this card." Hannah frowned. "That's weird. Am I being persecuted?" "In a way. Actually in two ways. The most direct way is that you are beating up on yourself. You are persecuting yourself! It's interesting the way the Tarot has focused on that. By constantly bombarding yourself with negative perspectives, you are literally attacking yourself. You won't allow yourself to be good!" "Yikes! That is awfully powerful stuff. It's true. I really do stay on my own case, to the point where I'm making myself crazy. What was the other way I'm being persecuted?" "Well, this is a persecution that's not against you, but you feel it around you. You know how in the news, if there's a good person, anyone who has tried to help others, or care about others, you can almost guarantee that in a very short period of time, there's going to be a big scandal and it turns out that person isn't so good after all?" "That's true. There aren't any good people anymore. Everyone is a jerk." "Yes. The news gives us the impression that no one is good. It seems that if anyone even tries to be good, they are immediately persecuted, dredging through every action of their entire lives, grilling them until their flaws are found out. In our news and public opinions we collectively beat up on people in the public eye just the same way you are beating up on yourself." "Hmm. Yes, I don't think I've looked up to anyone for a while." "It's hard to look up to anyone when people are being torn apart daily in the news. That's why this type of persecution is so destructive. In a way it's related to the way you feel about yourself. When the world is telling you that no one is good, it's hard to feel good about yourself. Naturally you tend to see yourself in a bad light." "Ouch, Phred. The Tarot is digging at some deep feelings. Do you think I'll be able to stop attacking myself?" "It takes time to sort it out. Just being aware of it is a good step. And don't start criticizing yourself because you can't stop criti- cizing yourself," Phred said rolling is eyes with a grin. "Now, let's look at the top group of cards. The card in the immediate future is the eight of Swords." Hannah looked carefully at the picture. "The woman in the card is blindfolded and surrounded by eight swords. She looks kind of persecuted. Is that another card of persecution?" "Not exactly. This woman feels isolated and alone, but she's created this separation herself. She dreams about the castle up on the hill behind her, but she can't reach it or even see it. The eight swords that imprison her represent her own feeling of being all bottled up and trapped by the energy of life. Most of the time, when people feel blocked and excluded, they tend to blame other people or circum- stances. But this card encourages you to look within yourself and ask if you are the one who is causing your own pain and separation." "That's amazing how deeply that fits in with the other cards. It's very similar to the self persecution you were just talking about. Okay. How does the Tarot suggest I get beyond this? How about the 'final outcome' cards. That's my favorite part." "The 'final outcome' is the four of Swords. The four of Swords shows a man lying quietly in a chapel. He is meditating, with the three of swords above him, and one Sword horizontally beneath him. This card represents retreat from the storms and pressures of life. It's a healing retreat, and shows that the way forward is to look within one's own consciousness for strength." "It sounds like the Tarot is telling me that a cure for the feeling that I'm always outside the castle is to stop and look at what is within me," Hannah said. "That's a beautiful way to put it, Hannah." "What about that wonderful looking man, next to the four of Swords. Is he my hero, who is coming to save me?" "Hannah. You are going to drive me crazy, always asking the Tarot to give you a score sheet of your life. Like one of those magazines at the supermarket that tells you 'who's who' in the soap operas." "Sorry," Hannah said sheepishly. "It was kind of a joke." "And a very good one at that," Phred laughed. "But it's making me crazy anyway. Let's talk about your hero, the Emperor. He is beautiful. The picture and the name 'Emperor' suggest a male figure, with the responsibility to take care of you. In the days when the Tarot was designed, long ago, Emperors had responsibility not just for everyone's physical well being but for their spiritual health, as well. In this reading, the Emperor is trying to help you relax and trust the positive energies of life." "But you just told me to look within myself. How does the Emperor help me see that?" "Yes. You need to find strength inside yourself, through the retreat of the four of Swords. Then you'll be in a stronger position to trust the loving strength and guidance that comes from those around you. Right now you don't feel strong within yourself, so you focus on criticism. The Emperor card reminds you that you can get strength from your friends by giving more attention to their support. You can even draw a sense of spiritual guidance from others if you are receptive and strong within yourself." "Yes, there are supportive people in my life. I've asked myself occasionally why it is so easy to focus on criticism, and so hard to accept support and encouragement." "Perhaps you can make a conscious effort to focus on loving supportive opinions and not pay so much attention to picky negative opinions. Remember the blindfold in the eight of Swords? When you take off the blindfold of self pity you'll find that the universe is ready to give you all kinds of nurturing support." "That sounds awfully nice," Hannah sighed, closing her eyes. "It makes me happy to think that I could hear the supportive notes. I can imagine it would feel like a supportive symphony, with the various melodies and harmonies lifting me up, above my own limitations." "You're getting it, Hannah! We're in Dreamscape, where Dreams have the power to lift you into the higher perspective of the inner sky. Let your dreams lift you up, and then you can look down on yourself and see how everything fits and flows." {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy Seeds, Seeding and Cutting -------------------------- Within a seed all the possibilities of your plant are already present so that when you are seeding for magic you are undertaking a most important action, something to be done with great reverence. Every plant has its own seeding time which must be adhered to. Until that time keep your seeds for magic in a muslin bag tied with silk. Each bag must contain seeds of one species only; moreover you can also separate those seeds which you are going to use for a particular purpose. For example, if you are going to use some particular herbs in an incantation to help conceive a baby girl, you will unite all the bags containing the seeds of the appropriate color (in this case pink) and you will add to the bag whatever other spells or amulets you want to use. Make sure that all your seeds are healthy before you plant them. A healthy seed is dry, hard, quite large and of a good lustrous color. If it has ridges or spots don't use it, as you can imagine what disastrous effect a spoiled plant could bring to your incantations. It used to be said that witches would gather and seed their plants in darkness on a full moon night, when practicing white magic, or on a black moon when they were up to no good! In fact, planting a seed in the earth, while the full moon shines upon you, can be a very romantic and fascinating operation. However, whether you seed during the day or during the night, always choose a period when the moon is waxing, as this helps all growing matters. All seeds should be consecrated before seeding. The cutting of the herbs is also important. Make sure to only use your consecrated boleen for the task. They should be cut at the right time; since that time is different for each plant, your herbal book will help you with this. Take only the healthy and intact parts of the plant. Put them together in bunches of a few and hang them to dry (unless otherwise required). What You Can Grow ----------------- Here I have chosen a few herbs, some of which you all know and have used dozens of times; you will now have the chance to look at them with different eyes. Partly by yourself, using your own intuition and awareness, and partly by consulting your herbal, you will be able to grow and use any number of other herbs which you feel pulled by, and which you might like to experiment with. These herbs can be grown in your own magic garden, or on your window sill or balcony, or in your indoor garden, taking the measures described above. Garlic -------- Medicinal - Garlic relieves various problems associated with poor digestion. Also regularizes the action of the liver and gall bladder. It is beneficial for the blood circulation and heart action, and it is helpful in intestinal infections. The bulb is the part used medicinally. Magical - Garlic is the good luck charm par excellence. Together with mandrake, which is the same kind of charm but a softer energy, they can protect any household through all kinds of changes to progress toward the good of all involved. Garlic has a strong, male energy, and will ensure that the strength required for any situation will always be there. Thyme ------ Medicinal - Thyme disinfects the digestive and respiratory apparatus, tones the entire system and stimulates the appetite and the digestion; therefore it is used for throat and bronchial problems, for gastritis and lack of appetite. It is also used as a mouthwash, and to make a purifying face mask. In the bath water it improves bruises, swelling and sprains. The whole herb is used. Magical - This is indeed a rich herb! The sweet scent and the abundance of magical and medicinal properties make thyme one of the most precious plants. Use thyme above all to prepare yourself for magic. The scent of thyme has the property of gathering a person's energies and of focusing them in the immediate space and time, thus increasing the person's strength in that moment. Use by throwing a few sprigs of the fresh herb in the bath water, during the cleansing ritual before magic. Rosemary -------- Medicinal - Rosemary is aromatic, digestive, antiseptic, stimulant and antispasmodic. Thanks to all these properties it is widely used both for internal and external purposes. The branches with leaves are the parts used. Magical - This herb has the property of opening your heart to that part of it which is still childlike and innocent, therefore bringing happiness and contentment. Its name, "seadew" expresses well its magical qualities, strong and yet delicate and innocent. By opening a connection with rosemary you will receive the very precious gift of contentment. Wormwood -------- Medicinal - The leaves and the flowery tops are the parts of this plant used medicinally. It stimulates the nervous system and gives vitality and appetite, thus helping the liver and the stomach in their functions. It must be used with caution as it can be dangerous. Magical - Wormwood makes a very good infusion to drink after magic. It is a herb which gives vitality and enthusiasm, and therefore can help overcome low energy moments and can be helpful after performing incantations when you might have spent a lot more of your energies than you realized at the moment. Sage ---- Medicinal - Sage stimulates the activity of the intestine and has a balsam effect on the respiratory system. It is digestive and aromatic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, tonic and astringent. The parts used are the leaves and the flowery tops. Magical - Sage has various different uses in magic, as its properties are of more than one kind. The first, indisputable one, is to promote health. Sage used magically will give an immediate and strong feeling of health and well-being. It will furthermore indicate to you with dreams or images what you need to do in order to acquire a perfect health. Another interesting use of the herb sage is that it will give the woman who uses it in the right way a glimpse of the kind of man which she would benefit most from. This magic can be specially helpful if you are looking for a male partner, to help you make the right choice, or if you feel your female energy needs to be balanced out by a stronger aspect of the male one. Mint ---- Medicinal - Mint is a good all-round herb with many properties. It is tonic, digestive and helps the nerves and nerve-related problems. It also has a mild analgesic function. It is antiseptic. The parts used are the leaves and the flowery tops. Magical - The magical property of mint is to bring coolness and an even temper; very useful when you are burning with rage and would like to break everything to pieces! Mandrake --------- Medicinal - The medicinal part is the rootstock. Its use today is limited to homeopathic preparations for hay fever, asthma and cough. Magical - Mandrake, today like yesterday, is a very powerful charm. If you can find a whole one which resembles a human figure, you can assign to it every job, and it will do it. It is a bit like the wild card of herbal magic. Carry it with you in any situation where you need the help of the stars, and you will be lucky. Rue --- Medicinal - Once they were used to remove warts, but even that practice resulted quite harmful. Rue should not be used medicinally without the supervision of a doctor. Also, when using it for magic one must be very careful not to absorb the plant, either by drinking it or by putting it in close contact with the skin. Magical - This herb's strongest power, is to bring momentous awareness of one's own mistake to the people who are subject to her magical influence. That might mean that you would want to use it for yourself, to discover where you went wrong, or for others, to see if anything fishy is going on. Laurel (Bay) ------------ Medicinal - The parts of this plant used medicinally are the leaves and the fruits. It favors digestion. It is slightly tonic and purifying. Applied externally it is a deodorant and soothing. In the bath water it makes a relaxing bath. Bay oil pressed from the berries and leaves can be used in salves and liniments for rheumatism, bruises and skin problems. Magical - This is the herb of glory and fame, as simple as that. Use laurel in an incantation and you will immediately see the ways to put yourself in the course of immortality (symbolically speaking). Keep laurel next to you, on your desk, in your dressing room, in the locker room on an important occasion, and you will be sure to succeed. Hawthorn -------- Medicinal - Hawthorn normalizes the blood pressure by regulating heart action. Extended use will usually lower blood pressure. It is good for heart muscle weakened by age. It is also good for nervous conditions and insomnia. A decoction of flowers and leaves is astringent and tonic, specific for greasy and impure skin. Makes a relaxing bath. Magical - This is the herb of happy life, in work and in family. As that covers a great deal of human interests, you can see why hawthorn has always had such a great reputation as a magic plant. Keep a hawthorn sprig in your place of work and at home, and your happiness is safeguarded. Well, there is so much more I could tell you about herbs, but I think it's time to move on to a new subject. I have been told by many of you that you have started your own special herb garden and that makes me feel very good about sharing my knowledge with you. Starting next week, I will begin to discuss the magic of flowers. If you love flowers, you won't want to miss the next issues of ESP! That chart may be downloaded as JUNFIN.GIF. Of note: The price swing above and below average widened significantly for most items, reflecting sharp price drops during the month. We've also gathered prices from all auctions during July, ending at 8 p.m. WAT on July 5. Comparisons have been called odious, but averages are meaningless when few items of a kind have been sold. Averages will be provided in next week's column, when more sales have produced some meaningful patterns. There are two charts for July 1 through July 5. These may be downloaded as JUL1.GIF and JUL2.GIF, respectively. * * * * With more auctions than ever before, some words on consignment savvy may be helpful. 1) Consignment means that you are hiring the staff of the auction house to work on your behalf for a commission based upon the sale price. You will be giving the proprietor or consignment manager custody of your rare items. It stands to reason, that if you would hesitate for one second to invite the proprietor or consignment manager to visit your turf, you should not consign your items to that auction house. Be sure that you understand the time, place, and terms of payment. Don't hesitate to ask clarifying questions. An auction house should, upon your E-mail request, provide E-mail confirmation of your consignment: items, minimum bids (if applicable), sale date, percentage of commission, and terms of payment. 2) The commission rate charged by an auction house or organization is only part of the story. If you are considering consigning to an auction house, attend at least one auction first. At the auction, ask yourself these questions: a) Are staff members reputable avatars? b) Is the auction well-promoted? c) Are the auctioneer and all on stage staff knowledgeable about the items? d) Are questions answered promptly, completely, and courteously? e) Does the entertainment on stage focus on pushing the goods, or are the staff preoccupied with getting attention for themselves? f) Is security handled appropriately, and with a minimum of fuss? g) Does the auction gain or lose momentum? h) If you were a consignor, would you be satisfied with the prices obtained? 3) The first time you deal with an auction house, consign one or two items only. 4) Be fair about minimum bids. It is acceptable to place a minimum on an item if permitted by the auction house, but always ask the proprietor or consignment manager for input about the amount of your minimum. It is unfair to fantasize at the expense of the auction house owner and staff, who receive no commission on unsold items. 5) Although the auction house is being paid for its services to you, remember that the owner and staff are people, too. Don't forget to thank them for serving you! It takes an immense amount of time, work, and, yes, spending real world money to run a successful auction house. Taking the time to express appreciation is appropriate in any business relationship, and pays big dividends in the long run. 6) If you are a satisfied customer, spread the word! The better and the more diverse the items consigned, the better the attendance will be. This translates into higher prices for you, the consignor. If you consign frequently, telling your friends that you are a satisfied customer is a form of rational self-help. Next week: Updated July prices for common collectibles, rare item price chart, and some bywords for bidders. It's taken quite a while; with my RW health problems and such, it has been rather difficult to get things off on the right foot. I'm very pleased with our new office; we have two meeting rooms where we will hold informal chats, Peer Avatar counselling sessions, the Voices project, Avatarobics, Kymer Crime Victims Support meetings, Vendoholics meetings, as well as many other programs and classes. We will expand our offices as needed, but we feel that for the timebeing, we have plenty of usable space. KCS is proud to announce its two new assistant directors, Sinister and Sappholyte Normala Orlando II! In addition to his assistant director duties, Sinister has also volunteered his time as KCS Public Relations manager. Welcome to both of them! For those of you who filled out applications for positions with KCS, rest assured, we have not forgotten you. You will be contacted as positions become available. For those of you who expressed interest in membership at Phantasus Fountains Country Club, KCS regrets to say that the country club *will not* open until we have glue inWorld for security reasons. We definitely don't want our members to pay membership dues only to one day walk into the clubhouse and find it robbed or vandalized by one of Kymer's thieves. We will keep you posted as more information becomes available. The KCS information packet in the newsstand section of the library (KCSINF.TXT) is still up-to-date with one other exception. The Voices Poetry Project will be delayed due to possible copyright problems that the director has become aware of. However, we *will* be offering a Writer's Discussion Group in its place. This will be a great way to meet fellow writers, discuss ways of dealing with good old writer's block (ugh!), and discuss other things of interest to the writing community in Kymer. If you're interested, please email the director, Normala Kelly, at 75147,3120 with the words "Writer's Group" in the subject heading, and you will be contacted with more information. KCS is desperately in need of donations in the form of tokens to help us with costs of operation as well as objects to decorate our offices. Donations will be gratefully accepted by Normala Kelly, Sinister, or Sappholyte Normala Orlando II. We would especially like to have trunks, tea cups, coffee cups, flowers,picnic baskets, and body spray paints, however, all donations will be appreciated and put to good use. We are looking forward to being a community service that will help us to keep the dream of Kymer alive and well ! We look forward to *your* involvement with KCS programs, as a client and as a volunteer. Please take a look at the KCS Information Packet in the newsstand if you haven't already done so, and see what activities you'd like to be a part of. If you have any questions, please email the director or ESP any KCS employee and we'd be happy to answer your questions. {!} - Special Invitation - {!} Pinkie & Brains-Special Edition by Passion "Pinkie & the Brains" kicks off another week on Thursday, July 11, at 6:00p.m. WAT at "Pinkie's Place" turf. The Krewe of the Duckolytes ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Oracle Teresias To Aid the Krewe - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects We've all heard about those few, fateful, and fortuitous encounters that lead to something special. Most of us have thought about that "some enchanted evening" that "is the start of something big". Ratavas who grew up in the 1960s are very likely to remember watching "The Millionaire" in TV syndication and looking for the philanthropic John Beresford Tipton's private secretary behind every tree. That million dollars was a nice fantasy allowance add-on! Most of us have bought lottery tickets in Kymer, the real world, or both, and some of us have even won. On Thursday, June 27, Passion had a Magical Elevator Encounter. As the co-host of the popular new Kymer game "Pinkie and the Brains", Passion had been busily cruising Kymer byways to promote the event. As all game hosts and event organizers know, every ghost counts! After an hour of visiting every public locale, Passion hurried back to the Apartment Building. She had to meet Brynne, the Celebrity Co-Host of the week, she had she had to open up the turf, she had to set up "Pinkie's Place" for the game. She was one busy avatar! Those surprise encounters always seem to happen when one is in most of a hurry and least prepared. Just as Passion was about to click on the elevator door, who should materialize but Oracle Teresias, burgundy robes aflutter and blue book in hand. Those who have met Passion know that she is an avey with savvy. She hurriedly sent an ESP to Brynne, asking her to be patient for just two more minutes, then bowed to Teresias. Passion explained the game that she was about to host. "Hmmmmm--sounds like fun," Teresias said. Passion reminded him that even an Oracle can cut loose and live the dream now and then. She tantalized him, holding out the carrot of celebrity guesthood. Teresias bit! He swallowed! He chewed on that carrot awhile and said, "I can do that. Let me put July 11 on my calendar." The Krewe of the Duckolytes may not be able to produce John Beresford Tipton's private secretary bearing a check for a million dollars, but we can provide the occasional enchanted evening. Our Oracles are magic, and the Magical Teresias will be the Celebrity Guest at the July 11 session of "Pinkie and the Brains". If you've ever wanted to meet an Oracle, up close and personal, this is your big opportunity! Mark your calendar, set your alarm watch! Go ahead, avatars in Alaska and Hawaii, leave work early! Whatever you do, be sure to play "Pinkie and the Brains" at 6:00 p.m. WAT on Thursday, July 11 in the turf "Pinkie's Place". Teresias will join Passion, Brains, and the gathered ghosts. He will hide somewhere in Kymer. The lucky avatar who is the first to find him and to utter the secret phrase aloud will not only have an oracular encounter, but will be entitled to select one of the locked Duckolyte Prize Chests containing a secret surprise. Even better, that canny and quick avatar will be eligible to participate in the special Championship Round on Thursday, July 28. The winner of that round will receive a very special prize from the Oracles. Come join the fun! "Pinkie and the Brains" is an exciting weekly game sponsored by the Krewe of the Duckolytes and co-sponsored by ESP! There is no special software to download, no entry fee to pay, so don't miss out. July 11 promises to be a very special day in the annals of Kymer and of the Krewe of the Duckolytes. Be sure to attend! {!} - Duckolyte Raffle Winners - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects The Krewe of Duckolytes Raffle is one of the best-kept secrets in Kymer. There is no special software to download and run, tickets are only twenty tokens each, and can be obtained very easily, because most Duckolyte Wings and Senior Wings sell these tickets. One or more authorized ticket sellers is usually inworld, so the next time you visit the City of Phantasus, be sure to ask a Duckolyte officer about raffle tickets. Winners are drawn after the first Duckolyte Benefit Auction each month. The auction is held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the turf "Duck Hunt". This month's winners, the winning number, and the prizes were: Megret, third place with number 198, won a vase of flowers; HeartFlame, Fire Elf King, second place with number 265, won a Lacy Heart Head and a Trumpet ornament; Golden Knight IMPERATOR SB was the first place winner with number 102. His prize was a heart chest containing a rose head painted with a rare color and a full can of matching body paint. Those are big rewards for a twenty-token investment, so don't miss out. Be sure to get your tickets for next month's raffle today. OK, that was the GOOD news ... now here is the BAD news. Participation in the raffle has been so low in recent months that the Krewe of the Duckolytes is evaluating whether or not to continue the raffle beyond August. Every ticket you buy is a vote for the Krewe to continue this raffle, and to provide more fun and more benefits for Kymer citizens. Don't let this fine, fun event die! Visit the city and buy your ticket from a Duckolyte Wing or Senior Wing today! {!} - Duckolyte Benefit Auction - {!} Larry Lamb, Duckolyte Wing This was a huge week for the Duckolyte Benefit Auction. We had several very rare items up for sale this week and even though 2 of them didn't sell we still had a great auction. They have a 10K and 20K minimum respectively but we will work on getting that down a little bit since no one really seems interested at the current prices. Thank you for your support. {!} - Pinkie and the Brains - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects On Thursday, July 4, the Krewe of the Duckolytes celebrated Independence Day with another session of one of Kymer's most popular games: Pinkie and the Brains. Passion, as Pinkie, and Brains, Wing Commander of the Krewe of the Duckolytes were joined by Necrolyte SunRay White Rose, as special celebrity guest. The popular White Rose is known not only for the numerous fun events she has organized and hosted in Kymer, but also as the newest Assistant Sysop of the Worlds Away Community Forum. Round One got the game off to a rousing start with Passion, the Hidden, tucking herself away at the Theater Locale. Clever Unga-Bunga solved the clue of "Movie Magic", and was the first to find Passion and say the secret phrase aloud. Unga-Bunga selected Chest #5, which was unlocked to reveal a Snowman Head. White Rose built up the momentum in Round Two, hiding at the Argo Gate. Huckleberry hustled, to find White Rose, and was the first to shout out the clue: Down by the Sea. Huck selected Chest #3, and was dubious when it was found to contain the lunch Brains had misplaced while packing the prizes. All was well, however, when the brown sack was opened to reveal a Lacey Heart head along with a container of rare Green #45 paint. Round Three found Brains perfectly in character as the Hidden, who chose the BarL Head Vendo as his hiding place. Dark Sun, Duckolyte Wing deciphered the clue "Send in the Clows" and selected Chest #2 containing a rare-painted Edward head. White Rose hid by the NuYu Produce Head vendo during Round Four. Meridiene was both fast and clever, having solved the clue "Green Grocer". Meridienne selected Chest #4, which contained a rare-painted Rose Head. Kira certainly didn't get robbed when she solved the clue, "This is a stick up," and found Passion by the West Fountain ATM. She won the contents of the remaining prize chest, Chest #1. Her secret surprise was rare grape candy. On Thursday, July 11, at 6:00 p.m., the Celebrity Guest will be someone very special, indeed. Sometimes seen in the Temple Tabernacle at weddings and other special functions, daringly deploying himself at locale openings swathed head-to-toe in brilliant burgundy, bearing a blue book, next week our special guest will be Oracle Teresias! If you have ever wanted to catch an Oracle, this is your big chance. Be sure to join Oracle Teresias, Passion, Brains, and the members of the Krewe of the Duckolytes next week for this very special session of "Pinkie and the Brains". See you there! {!} - Duckolyte Security School - {!} by Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects It's not too late to enroll in Duckolyte Security School, which will hold its fourth session on Sunday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. in the turf "Duck School". The Duckolytes who plan, coordinate, and conduct the training sessions are: Ropes Pajo, Duckolyte Wing, Duckolyte Princess Di Pajo, Duckolyte Nostromo Richmar, and Duckolyte Bobbi Richmar. The goal of the Security School is educating both new and experienced avatars about item handling, container security, turf security, and all the other skills that help make inworld experiences both safer and more enjoyable. Duckolyte Security School meets every Sunday, so that avatars will have the opportunity to practice their skills and to learn new ones. To make each training session more fun, prizes are offered for participants. These training sessions are offered to all avatars, free of charge. We hope to see you there! {!} - Duckolyte TriviaMaster - {!} By Disco Duck, Wing Special Projects On Sunday, June 30, at 7:00 p.m. in the turf "Duck Hunt", Brains, Wing Commander of the Krewe of the Duckolytes hosted another rousing session of Duckolyte TriviaMaster. The topic was Duck Soup, with not one doggy question in the lot. Extra door prizes were given to soothe the ruffled feathers of those who wanted to put Brains in the soup for having forgotten to give the door prizes to Larry Lamb last week. The competition was especially keen, with winners having been decided based upon the last few questions. No tie breaker was required. Winners for the week were: First Place: TexWilly Wonka, who won a rare colored rose head with matching paints packed in a heart chest; Second Place Izabella, who won a rare colored lacy heart head with matching paints packed in a heart chest; Third Place: Jadelin, who won a rare colored duck head with matching paints packed in a heart chest; Fourth Place: Meridienne, who won a fern. We have moved to Friday nights at 5:00 p.m. WAT in the same turf: Sunray Auction. All proceeds are paid out to the victims of crimes and crashes (VoCC). Anyone desiring additional information on applying for assistance from this fund may contact Sunray Fawn, Sunray Render, Acolyte Sunray Indigo, and myself. The VoCC has given over 48,000 Tokens as compensation and replacement to Avatars who have experienced the wronged side of crimes and crashes in Worlds Away. And that figure does NOT include the items and heads (both rare and vendo-available) that have been replaced. The weekly Sunray Auction which supports the VoCC is propelled by a strong force. It creates a wave of self-help and mutual support throughout the Dreamscape without addressing the criminals. And it offers support to the Oracles (who are besieged enough with work to make the Dreamscape better for us), by compensating some of the losses experienced during crashes - though they are more than willing to do so. We shall continue our efforts until the counter force of crime is pushed back upon itself. We are not indicting or punishing; we are providing a safe environment for the victim in the face of immoral acts and crime. I have wanted to write about this endeavor for weeks. Recently I was robbed of everything I owned during a Sunray Auction due to an innocent and accidental slip in security. There was an incredible wave of compassion that followed the moment of helpless horror that I fell victim to. This care and support was like a wave that washed over the negativity and I was left with a feeling of safety. Render and Pal Joey would not leave my side, selflessly handling the majority of esps that I could not answer . Pal Joey and Oceanfront were the epitome of clear thinking in a panic situation. They sought out the network of possible causes, and then tracked and retrieved the stolen goods that night. Although in my story, the theft itself was solved, I retell it here because I want to convey the deep personal shock and horror of being violated this way. We truly cannot imagine what it feels like until it actually happens. The VoCC has been borne out of the vision and promise that we can help one another recover from such personal devastation. We reach out and can help one another more effectively than trying to rehabilitate those lost misguided avatars who commit the crime and who don't want to be helped. Support our effort if you can by attending our Auctions every Friday night at 5:00 p.m. WAT in the Sunray Auction turf. But be assured that whether you attend our auctions or not, whether you donate or not, you may always call upon us for help and compensation. You will be supported and not left alone if the fates cause your path to cross the ill intentions of another misguided avatar or an unexpected crash. The purpose and intention of VoCC follows the very simple wisdom of an ancient saying, "Love Conquers All," which we have all heard but not necessarily witnessed in action. This endeavor in Kymer is an effort to make that truth become a living one. Thank you. {!} - ODE - {!} by Arthur O'Shaughnessy, submitted by Sunray Knight Zooey We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams;- World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers of the world forever, it seems. With wonderful deathless ditties We build up the world's great cities, And out of a fabulous story We fashion an empire's glory: One man with a dream, at pleasure, Shall go forth and conquer a crown; And three with a new song's measure Can trample an empire down. We, in the ages lying In the buried past of the earth, Built Nineveh with our singing, And Babel itself with our mirth; And o'erthrew them with prophesying, To the old of the new world's worth; For each age is a dream that is dying, Or one that is coming to birth. {!} - Myth Creation Contest - {!} By QTPie On Saturday night we held the prize presentations for the Myth Creation Contest at the Mythology Guildhall. To many shadows on the wall, No substance as they rise and fall, How could it be that I'm alone? The darkness chills me to the bone. But then the sun begins to rise, I feel it's warmth and close my eyes, Just like the Phoenix born again, It's golden rays dry up the rain. But is it rain? I cannot tell, Perhaps it was the tears that fell, That soaked the pillow as I slept, My heart was lonely as I wept. But now I see against the sky, A rainbow, and I know not why.. But in my heart the truth is found, My breathing is the only sound. I shall not be alone today, This one will be a day of play. For God has seen me in his eye, I'm not unique, don't ask me why. But with his gaze he gave to me, The greatest gift could ever be, The colours here that arc the globe, Are made up of the friends I know. {!} - The Knights of Kymer Poetry & Storytelling Guild - {!} Calendar of Events for the Month of July. *Spanish Dreams* Date: Saturday, July 13th Hosts: Los Hispaniclytes and SrK's Poetry Guild Time: 8:00 PM (21:00) - 10:00 PM (22:00) Locale: Casa Hispaniclyte (turf) Description: A bilingual event, to give *all* avatars a brief sample of the greatness and variety of Spanish-speaking Poetry. I currently use the Moon Garden Tarot, a beautiful Tarot deck focused on the feminine energies of the moon. Readings can be tailored to your time, questions, interest, and how much you would like to spend (i.e., longer, more complex readings would cost more). I encourage you to give this a try. All readings would be through ESP if privacy is desired and your confidentiality is assured. I hope you'll give it a try and will find Tarot to be fun, informative, and insightful. To make an appointment for a specific time, either weekends any time or weeknights after 5 p.m. WAT, send me an e-mail with possible times and we will arrange it. Otherwise you can approach me in-world for an impromptu reading or to make a time for later. But please don't interrupt if I'm playing a game such as Worlds of Fortune (my favorite) or Kymer or such. If you ESP and I don't answer you right away, that's probably why. :) ====================================================================== Triple A's Dot Warner ====================================================================== All Antiques Auctions will be opening soon! Submitting these listings to ESP! is in addition to submitting event information to the Scheduling Group. Scheduling conflicts, if any, are resolved by the Scheduling Group. Changes to recurring events should be submitted to both the Scheduling Group and ESP! ESP! is available in the Newsstand Library of the WA Community Forum and thus earns no tokens to pay authors. Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
