The ESP! staff has been very busy behind the scenes to bring you the kind of publication you've come to expect from us. This past week, in my quest for information as to where I come from and how I got here, I spent an hour in the offices of the Kymer Hypnotist (who prefers to remain anonymous). Unfortunately, it became pretty apparent to both of us that I'm not a very good subject. He got upset with me because I kept asking him too many questions about that crystal orb he was using. Like, where did he get that from? How does it work? (I want one!) You know, all those kinds of questions that practical people like answers to before they surrender any kind of control. Before he threw me out of his office, he told me that if I'm willing to pay his fees (absolutely astronomical!), he'll keep working with me. But I also have to promise not to ask questions about that crystal orb. Hmmmm ... what's more important? My quest or that crystal orb? Stay tuned while I think on that one. ;) {!} - Dread's Spot - {!} By Dread Have you ever wondered why there are 460 tokens in your ATM when you know you've only put in a few hours, or lost or gained a few tokens when putting them into a box? I have. Have you wondered how come your thousand year old egg spins the first time you enter WA and then it doesn't anymore and how other items rock to some and not to you. Have you been booted when placing a fern too close to the edge of a room or still can't get into WA with winsock or even lost about a trillion ESP's before crashing? Well, problems problems problems, but it seems the gist is that we should be using version 1.1. Unfortunately the only trouble with that is the idle time monitor. It is a PITA. Most that I know inworld have returned to version 1.0 including myself, even though we experience the minor problems as outlined. There is no option to ADD a tenant to a lease with version 1.0 but until recently I was of the opinion that 1.0 was faster even though technically there should be no noticeable difference. Which is the best setup? Quite frankly it isn't an issue as 1.1 will most likely be mandatory soon. Who then will release the first patch to cancel the idle time popup? It's all designed innocently enough to combat the sleepers. Big deal, and especially as most people who wish to sleep can simply do it in a turf now. So, with the CompuServe idle time popup appearing every hour or so and the WA one every 12 minutes do you think it is a good idea if we suggest another popup to appear every 5 minutes to remind us to blink? Seems like the designers are always concerned about dealing with problems than enhancing what we already have -- turfs aside. All in all being disconnected every time you're AFK to go to the bathroom makes version 1.1 a white elephant. The Hunting Of Elephants ------------------------ MATHEMATICIANS: hunt elephants by going to Africa, throwing out everything that is not an elephant, and catching one of whatever is left. Experienced Mathematicians will attempt to prove the existence of at least one unique elephant before proceeding to the above as a subordinate exercise. Professors of mathematics will prove the existence of at least one unique elephant and then leave the detection and capture of an actual elephant as an exercise for their graduate students. COMPUTER SCIENTISTS: hunt elephants using this algorithm: 1. Go to Africa. 2. Start at the Cape of Good Hope. 3. Work northward in an orderly manner. 4. During each traverse pass do 5. Catch each animal seen. 6. Compare each animal caught to a known elephant. 7. If elephant detected, then crash. HARDWARE ENGINEERS hunt elephants by going to Africa, catching gray animals at random, and stopping when any one of them weighs within plus or minus 15 percent of any previously observed elephant. ECONOMISTS don't hunt elephants, but they believe that if elephants are paid enough, they will hunt themselves. STATISTICIANS hunt the first animal they see N times and call it an elephant. CONSULTANTS don't hunt elephants, and many have never hunted anything at all, but they can be hired by the hour to advise those people who do. OPERATIONS RESEARCH CONSULTANTS can also measure the correlation of hat size and bullet color to the efficiency of elephant-hunting strategies, if someone else will only identify the elephants. POLITICIANS don't hunt elephants, but they will share the elephants you catch with the people who voted for them. LAWYERS don't hunt elephants, but they do follow the herds around arguing about who owns the droppings. SOFTWARE LAWYERS will claim that they own an entire herd based on the look and feel of one dropping. VICE PRESIDENTS OF ENGINEERING, RESEARCH, AND DEVELOPMENT try hard to hunt elephants, but their staffs are designed to prevent it. When the Vice President does get to hunt elephants, the staff will try to ensure that all possible elephants are completely prehunted before the vice president sees them. If the Vice President does happen to see an elephant, the staff will: 1. compliment the vice president's keen eyesight 2. enlarge itself to prevent any recurrence. SENIOR MANAGERS set broad elephant-hunting policy based on the assumption that elephants are just like field mice, but with deeper voices. QUALITY ASSURANCE INSPECTORS ignore the elephants and look for mistakes the other hunters made when they were packing the jeep. SALES PEOPLE don't hunt elephants but spend their time selling elephants they haven't caught, for delivery two days before the season opens. SOFTWARE SALES PEOPLE ship the first thing they catch and write up an invoice for an elephant. HARDWARE SALES PEOPLE catch rabbits, paint them gray, and sell them as desktop elephants. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Cover Story ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - WA Exec Director Abducted by Aliens! - {!} By ~Cosmocat Well, Kymerians, a most unfortunate incident has occurred in the Dreamscape. WorldsAway Executive Director Tony Christopher was abducted by two moody aliens this past Wednesday night while over 80 ghosts watched with glee (I mean *horror*). He was allowed to answer questions from the audience first, however. The most popular questions were about new items, locales and gestures. Tony, who looked marvelous in his Pink sweater and Brown pants, courtesy of Passion's Fassions, told everyone that there will be new gestures like sitting and hugging coming soon. Coming also is a much needed teleporter by the Turf Building. The things I'm most looking forward to though, are pets, accessories and inworld documents ... all of which Tony said would be available in the future. He also broke tradition and gave an exact date for new heads to be released ... by July 19th. Of course this means some of the heads currently available will not be here for long; time to stock up! I asked about Rainbow Head Spray (I gotta dream, don't I?), but he didn't make any commitments. He also said new locales will be opening and briefly described what Harlequin Games may be like: rentable locales for avatar-sponsored games and multi-player games like board games and dice games. Issues of theft were also addressed, and Tony commented that Acolyte powers are currently being tested, and the ability to *remove* items from a chest in your pocket will also be available. When asked about selective ESP, he at first said no, but the aliens prodded him with their rods and he finally agreed it would be worked on. Technical questions were also addressed, and version 1.2 should contain fixes for the ESP bug, as well as providing more resistance to crashes and help eliminate slow response time. So, that's more or less what happened ... except for one strange thing. When I asked one of the aliens a simple question, I got the following response: ESP to Sa-Neheset: why is it that there are no Oracles around when the Aliens invade?? It was a huge success. As soon as it was over last week I received several mails asking when the next one would be and two avatars wrote in suggesting a competition for youngsters. With so much interest we are gonna have to do another, but hey don't wait for me; if you have ideas or suggestions please write to me. Most of the winners received their prizes at the prize giving ceremony on Wednesday, the photo taken by Sunray QTPie is in the library now, but the following avatars have not claimed yet so please contact me with a time you will be inworld. Gypsy Rose Dedannan Vampire Sparhawk Sun Fun Vanion Thanks to everyone for taking part, I'm sure *all* our readers will enjoy the stories published over the coming weeks. Don't forget to keep up with Brynne's arrival in Kymer which started last week in her editorial, (yep, the one I asked her to write like six milleniums ago) and also watch out for QTPie's story part two which she wrote as soon as she found out about her first prize, it will appear in your pages very soon. For now, get yourself a cup of tea and read on, enjoy two great stories from our second prize winners. {!} - How Elly Jelly Kelly Arrived in Kymer - {!} by Elly Jelly Kelly Second Prize Winner Ah me, I am now torn between loyalty for my homeland and affection for the country I have defected to .... No. Though I will surely suffer certain death for disclosing Top Secret revolutionary documents, I feel it my sad duty to reveal the TRUE reason why I, Elly Jelly Kelly, first came to Kymer. There now follows a transcript of a document left for me in February of this year in a plain brown envelope in the left-most waste paper basket of Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens. The original document I was obliged to eat and is sadly no more. OPERATION KYMER Mission Brief ------------------ TOP SECRET ===================== (For your eyes only destroy after reading) ================================ Page 1. Mission Title: Operation Kymer Mission Aims: To infiltrate the enemy territory (aka *Kymer* city in the Dreamscape) - locate contact - obtain enemy military information (bases, arms, etc.) and assess suitability for attack and a government take-over coup. Mission Details: You have been purchased passage on the ship *Argo*. There you will be issued with a new body and head, some local currency, and a fake passport by one of our men *Hermes*. You must name yourself *Elly Jelly Kelly* so your contact will be able to recognise you. When you ship arrives at port you must infiltrate the local community, learn their ways and customs and change your appearance and behaviour to suit their concepts of fashion and good manners. Above all, try not to look conspicuous. After this has been achieved, attempt to assume a position of responsibility within the community, which will give you access to important information. A booklet of fake references from a number of reputable sources has been supplied with this document which you may use to forward your career. Also use any other means available to you, corrupt or otherwise, to gain power. Additionally, you will be contacted at some point by another of our agents who has already installed in the enemy territory (the rendezvous time and date will be released later in code by the contact himself). This person will then be available to help you perpetrate any treasonable acts. He is going under the name of *Great Uncle Fortisquew*. You are to assume the role of Grand Niece to your contact, and presume familiarity upon first meeting. The method of information exchange between you and your contact should be arranged between yourselves. The method of information exchange between you and base will be via coded messages left at a specific drop-point - known as *The WorldsAway Forum*. Head all messages *Thought for today*. Our other agents will be using the same method of information exchange, so you may identify yourself to them by replying to their messages. You have all been supplied with the same cipher, allowing you to freely exchange information with one another. You have also been supplied with a separate cipher which is personal to you and should be used to inform on any other of our men who are being disloyal to the cause. Post this information under the message title *Ask yourself this...* and we will then take the necessary measures to dispose of the criminal. Once we consider we have obtained sufficient information about the structure of the enemies country and government, you will all either be withdrawn from duty, or called to take a major part in the coup, depending on your particular position in the community. There will be no option of acceptance or rejection of our decisions, and anyone who refuses to fulfill their duty will be disposed of. Enclosed: Booklet of references, two ciphers, a background on the identity *Elly Jelly Kelly*, a candle that converts into a flame thrower, three nuclear missiles shaped like ordinary tokens, a box of poison ampoules (boxed and labelled *Dr Chui's Chill Pills*) to be administered to disloyal agents, and a teddy-bear that can be taken apart and re-assembled into a semiautomatic sub-machine gun in under 30 seconds. You are asked to improvise with weapons inworld and your own training combat skills however, before resorting to the weapons issued to you here. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In view of your acceptable performance in the *Combat Poetry and How to overthrow Governments with Comic Verse* Spy Academy course, we suggest that you take up the specific assignment of becoming a known poet/writer and attempt to instill mutiny within the enemy community via any of the following methods: 1. Publishing propaganda about the enemy or distributing revolutionary verse. 2. Incorporating subliminal messages in your verse/stories, that will influence or command the enemy to perpetrate revolutionary acts, and/or join our cause. 3. Becoming so incredibly famous that people will do anything you tell them - then overthrow the city** (optional last resort) Please destroy this document after you have read it. Peace be with you, sister, when the revolution comes. ----------------------------------------------------- So there you have it! I am a traitorous spy, and I offer the citizens of Kymer my heartfelt apology and throw myself upon your mercy. Unless I am granted political asylum, by the time you receive this document I shall probably be dead. May Morpheus have mercy on my soul. {!} - How GGDreamer Arrived in Kymer - {!} by GGDreamer Second Prize Winner Mom could never make me be still or be quiet for that matter, except when I wanted to myself. In the grocery store I was usually very well behaved. I am sure the nice lady I met thought otherwise. Mother was very upset with me and did not get me anything this week. Nothing at all. No candy, no toy, or the special visit to see the monkeys at the firestation house. That was my favorite thing to do. Just because I asked the nice lady why her hair was too big, for this I have to be punished! I really wanted to know and her hair was TOO big. Mom was more upset with me this time. Even more than when I sat in church and glued her grocery stamps to the pews while she played the organ. I was younger then, so she just made me sit in the front row from then on. I think she kept her purse with her too. Funny, I never bothered my dad at all. I was always his little GG. I could cry and he would let me have whatever I wanted and I rarely had to cry. When I became a teenager, Mom always said my middle name should have been Go, instead of that dumb one she really gave me. I was always going somewhere or daydreaming about going somewhere. Go! Go! Go! I loved to daydream, something I could do from my own dream. It is the perfect life. I am one of those people that *go away*, anywhere and anytime. All I needed was a window to peer out of in school classes, to be in another world living a perfect life or at least something a lot more exciting than the real one. During track season, I always ran fast. I never did win. By the time the season opened, I had already lettered and did not need to win ... So just at the last turn of the lap, I'd slow down and wait until my friend zipped past me. I let her win, she wanted a letter so bad. The finish line was my gift to her. But when I ran with my cousins, I always finished first. We took off in a huge field, with rabbits scattering in the grasses. Ruth and I both had the same dream. In this field the dream seemed so close. With rabbits bouncing, we lived our dream on this field. Until one day, the time came, that I left. It was hard to go, but this was the end of that dream. The train rolled in, right in front of the house and I had to be on it when it rolled out. All my cousins waved as I cried in the seat. I hated to go. But then it is my middle name. From there I had a window to look out. The towns zoomed by as the train sped faster and faster. Every now and then I waved at the crossings, when the engineer slowed down enough. Now I felt like the little monkey at the firestation. Too bad I didn't have a banana! This could be a lot of fun :) I could have eaten it too, after I entertained the whole world. As I looked out this little window, I saw this really huge light appear ... IT WAS STILL DAYTIME ... what was happening. The sounds from the train, just disappeared. I must be sleeping, dreaming. I felt like I always do when I stay out on the boat too long. All you can dream of is water and drowning because the boat just disappears. You can swim for a bit, but the land never appears. All I saw now was this light that suspended me while I floated. I was drowning in the bright light, even with my eyes closed. Then, the light dimmed and I felt that I was being taken away, but up. Closer and closer to the light. I went higher and higher and so light. Like a little puffy cloud, still blinded in one eye by the bright light. How would I get back to my train. I saw a huge room, filled with little lights that flashed on and off. This was so enchanting, I thought Santa Claus must be near. I did not hear that traditional HO HO HO, so I knew I was not in Lapland. I saw men and women, not elves, but wait ... there is an elf! I have no idea where I am, but oh well. It does look like fun. I asked a tall, brown haired man, where are we, what is wrong with this place? It seems so strange here and I wonder if I really belong here. So, I turned, expecting his answer. His boombox said, *I don't know, but things are weird today*. Then he just disappeared. I walked around looking, but I never found him again. Finally, exhausted, I fell sound asleep. At least he had answered me, so I knew I could talk to these strange people. I wondered though, if he knew his hair was just a little too big? This time I decided I would not mention that. After all, I like getting toys and candy and I hoped for at least one person to talk to. All the others that had talked to me spoke a language I did not understand. I dreamed I was standing on my ladder, then suddenly I fell off. Straight down! I awoke, screaming and I begged for help, but no one could understand me. This dream was real, my leg hurt. These strange people just didn't know that my legs were my life. I needed both of them so I could run. Finally, I woke up from that nightmare. I decided not to sleep again. Eventually, I realized that these were aliens, all from another planet. They were even aliens to each other. Everyone was from a different place. They always meant well, that much I could see. I was given food and little gifts. These gifts were strange though. Some sort of color, only it didn't work for me. I tried, but I always looked the same. And I still could not understand anything they said ... BTW, LOL, ROFL ... They were always having a good time. THIS is MY kind of party, I thought ... I still looked for my friend, but I never could find him. I knew if I did he would help me understand this place. The next day, I woke up and this fountain appeared from nowhere. The fountain began talking. *You have entered our beta system, here we test all things before stamping them for approval for general use. Be careful, your dreams are real here. We will train you, then send you to a land where you will meet your friend and have your own language back. And your legs will be fine, Morpheus will heal them when the time is right. But first, we must complete the new sequence.* The fountain must have been a God, which made me think I must have died. Died and gone to heaven? I could not be sure, but somehow this God knew about my friend. Maybe they could read my mind. This place was definitely strange and I wondered what the next land would be like. The one I would be sent to. I like to go, but not when I am sent. There is the expectation that I will be happy with this and not find anything wrong with it. I was beginning to wish I was on my train again. Even though that day had been so sad. I longed for something familiar. I could not find an exit anywhere. There was no escape ... Somehow I managed to learn the language in spite of myself. My olympic ability to daydream seemed to be my major qualification for being selected. My legs did not seem to matter much either, even though I constantly worried about them. If my leg hurt too much to walk, they were quite willing to take me anywhere I wanted to go. They just seemed to be so unconcerned about my leg, and I often forgot about it myself. But they were terribly concerned with something called crashing, something I did often here. They would LOL until I stopped crashing, but then all that loud LOLing made me get a bug. Servers worked hard to repair everything. Finally, I quit crashing and learned how to ROFL. As I roamed through the ship, looking for my friend still, I found a nice big chair. Of course I sat there, but this was strange too. Nothing happened. Until the God called me to appear, then poof, I was in a temple. The God was here and she was not a fountain. By now, I was ready to make demands! I wanted answers to all my questions and I wanted to know when I would be released. *You have been approved now. We will send you back to your train and you will continue, unless that is not what you really want. We will send you from us, but your dreams will take you away at times to strange lands. That will be the place you really want to be. Search for your answers and you will dream well.* Mind reading again! How can this be? But, really, I can not wait to catch my train again. I will never look out the window again. This has been too weird for me. I need my field to run in with those bunny rabbits hopping around me. As long as my legs still work I will always run. The temple doors closed and I heard the lock bolt shut. I jumped up, looking for the God, but she was gone. I saw a tiny tunnel and crawled in it, hoping desperately to get out of here. I climbed through, crawling on my knees, chasing the daylight. It has been eons since I have seen sunlight. I felt sweat, I was real, alive and crawling faster now. I tasted freedom and I hoped a train. At the end of the tunnel, was a wooden plank that lead to something large. I could not quite tell yet. The sunlight was so bright my eyes need time to adjust. A large boat. As I stepped slowly on the plank, I saw the words ARGO, printed on the mast. The flag waved high. The moment I stepped inside the cabin, a little parrot began talking and the boat set sail. I thought, NO! This can not be right. I am suppose to be on a train, not a ship. How will I ever get back home? Will I ever wake up again? The ship docked and I walked out, headed for the land. I signed in as GG Dreamer, and as I walked out I saw lots of people. Strange people, no one seemed to know me. None of these people were from my world, but everyone said HI! I understood them perfectly to my delight. I walked into the store and found my friend buying things. I asked him, if it was really him. He said it was, but he looked so different. His HAIR, it wasn't too big anymore! He looked perfect, and we talked for hours. With his help, I found out that it was easy to catch my train, whenever I want. The ARGO would take me, and Morpheus would always ensure a safe return from dreamland to dreamland ... Kymer, my dream window, are you peering through it too? {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy Using Herbs in Magic -------------------- When you are going to do magic in which you will use an herb, or herbs, first of all you need to prepare them beforehand. If the herb is one which needs to be in powder form for that magic, powder it and place it in a small bowl which you have kept for that purpose. Or you might need to cut a sprig of the herb in order to prepare an infusion, which you will then pour into the cup ready for the magic. Or you might simply need to take a few pinches of the required herb(s) out of their containers and place them in the small bowl to be put inside the circle. Always take into consideration the medicinal nature of the herb - you would not, of course, drink an infusion of a poisonous herb, and you should prefer a relaxing one such as camomile when you are over- excited, and one for vitality when you feel tired. Herbs can be prepared as follows: As Potions - Infusions of one or more herbs (sometimes other ingredients are added such as petals of flowers, fruits, peels, etc.). As Powders - To be sprinkled in the wind (wait for the right wind to raise) or on parts of the body or of the room. Can Be Burned - By throwing them into the burner or into a bonfire outside. Can Be Kept - By placing them in a sachet, and kept on one's person for a time, or kept under the pillow (specially for dream magic), or placed in the apposite spell box, together with a few written words of power. In The Bath - Can be thrown into the bath water to make a deli- ciously toning and relaxing magic. Specially good in preparing for important occasions. Practical Information --------------------- An infusion is made by combining boiling water and the plants, usually the green parts or the flowers, and steeping them to extract the active ingredients. The usual amounts are half an ounce or one ounce to one pint of water. Usually the hot water is poured over the herb. Sometimes it is advisable to throw the herbs into the boiling pot and to remove the pot immediately from the fire. The steeping time is about ten minutes. Strain to drink and add honey or sugar if needed. A decoction is used for bark, roots, seeds, etc., which usually need to boil to release their active ingredients. Boil half an ounce plant parts per one cup of water; boil for three to four minutes, unless otherwise indicated. A powder is obtained by grinding the dry herb with a mortar and pestle until you have obtained a powder. Keep the enamel pot and the mortar and pestle which you will be using for your magic herbs separated from the rest of your kitchen utensils. Perhaps you can keep them on a shelf or drawer in which you keep your dried herbs for magic. Gathering Your Herbs -------------------- If some herbs grow abundantly around where you live, you can simply gather them fresh every time you need them. Hawthorn bushes, for example, are everywhere in the English countryside which is green and full of luscious plants. Even though it is in the best witches' tradition to gather herbs in the moonlight - a waxing moon for white magic, a black moon for an evil one - I advise you to go during the daytime hours and to leave home early enough not to be caught by darkness while still working. Recognizing the right herbs is already difficult, and darkness and cold would not improve things. Bring with you a boleen or any small sharp knife to cut the leaves and branches and herbs you will need, and a basket to put them in. As you cut them, wrap up the same ones in a sheet of thin paper. Otherwise, you will have a hard time separating the various species once you are home. If it is summer and the sun is hot, be sure to wear a hat! Buying Them Dry --------------- Probably, specially at the beginning when you are not too sure of what they are supposed to look like, you will buy most of your herbs dry from your local herbalist. The dry herbs which you buy will be consecrated and kept in the appropriate containers. Some will be in ceramic or glass jars, some in paper or linen bags. Keep your dried herbs on a shelf which will be for these herbs only. The shelf can be in your magic place, if you have one, or in another quiet room. But, please, not in the kitchen. The temptation to reach over for your magic thyme while cooking the Sunday roast might be too strong to resist! Consecrating Herbs, Seeds and Other Tools ----------------------------------------- This is one consecrating ritual which is very useful for all new herbs, tools and implements; all these things which newly enter your magic life. (For more specific consecrating needs - for example, when you need to consecrate a particular potion prior to drinking it - address yourself directly to the element of your magic at that moment. For example, if you need to consecrate an infusion to give you power, you might want to appeal yourself directly to the element fire.) Prepare yourself for magic and gather the symbols of the elements. For this ritual, in the cup you will have prepared some water with a pinch of sea salt in it (it must be pure source water - you can buy it bottled or fetch it from a natural source if you live out of town). Place the object or objects which you want to consecrate in front of you, between you and the symbols of the elements. If you have marked the circle on the ground and the symbols are at the four points of the circle, sit facing east and place the object to consecrate in front of you. With your eyes closed, relax and concentrate for a few minutes. When your mind is still and all other concerns have left you for the time being, with your left hand take the plant, or seed or whatever object you want to consecrate, hold it over the incense and say: THIS AIR TO MAKE YOU FREE Now hold the object over the burner in which a small flame will be burning and say: THIS FIRE TO GIVE YOU LIFE The, still holding the object in your left hand, with the right sprinkle the salted water over it and say: THIS WATER TO PURIFY Finally, take a few pinches of rice (or wheat or earth depending on what you use to symbolize the element of earth) out of your brass bowl, spill them on the ground in front of you and lay the object to rest over it. Say: THIS EARTH TO LET YOU BE As you say that, come to a kneeling position and bend forward letting your forehead touch the ground. In this abandoned posture feel the earth accepting and welcoming you and your object and feel the presence of your object in the home of your spirit. Growing Your Herbs ------------------ There is indeed no better way to get to know a plant than to grow it, and all the attention and care you will have given it to help it transform from seed to herb will come back a thousandfold to you when you perform your incantations. Consecrate your seed before planting, and when the little plant for the first time makes an appearance outside the earth, welcome it to its new life. Don't worry about seeming ridiculous, talking to your plants. Man used to "talk" to the vegetable world long before he was able to communicate with his own kind. If you have your own magic place of course the indoor garden should be kept there. If you have a spot of garden or land anywhere, you can make it into your own private altar of nature. Two or three square meters of land will do quite well for your first herb garden. Choose a piece of land where the earth looks moist and rich. Don't worry, however, if what you have available is not perfect; you can always better it by adding new earth and fertilizer. Just remember, within a seed, everything that the plant will have already exists and so planting for magic must be undertaken with great reverence, an action of birth. It is always best to keep your seeds in a linen bag - natural fibres for retaining the natural energies of the seeds. Peace, Love and Happiness {!} - Tarot Majik: Unraveling the Knots - {!} Hannah ponders why she should work so hard By Hierophant SRK, facilitator of the Sunray Majik Guild "Hi Hannah. So nice to see you. What a wonderful day to be out for a stroll." "Hi Phred. Good to see you. While we're walking I'd like to talk some more about whether or not I should join a group." Hannah said. "Sure, Hannah. That was a pretty neat reading we did on the subject. [Note: see ESP edition 1-17] What aspect is still bothering you." "Well. I looked into joining the Sunrays, and I was surprised to find that besides asking for a pledge of selfless service, they seem to expect me to work!" she said with an ironic grin. "Hannah!", Phred laughed. "That is so silly. How can you expect to serve without work?" Hannah laughed along with Phred. "Well, it does seem silly when you put it that way. It's just that I'm so busy all the time. And everyone around me is so busy we barely even see each other. Then when I relax, I don't feel like doing anything. I just expect people to come and find me." "Yes. That's a quirk. In WakingWorld it's so tempting to be lazy about our social lives. At night most of us want to just sit back and somehow we hope that our connection with other people will take care of itself." "That's true. And when I first came to Dreamscape I just wanted to wander around and be nice and have fun." "That sounds good in theory, Hannah. Perhaps it works for some people. But for me it turned out to be boring. And it sounds like you've been having the same problem." "Yes. Waiting for friendship, even InWorld, doesn't seem to be working." "That's exactly why you need to switch your thinking around. Instead of passively waiting for someone to come along and take care of your needs you need to have an attitude that your are going to take care of others. If you are actively serving others, or even just trying, all kinds of connections fall into place." "I follow what you're saying, and yet I've never had any real under- standing of how to do it." "Well, I admit it's not easy. It does require work and thought. But I've found that it's much easier to help others here Dreamscape. These Dreamscape bodies don't impose needs on us the way bodies do in Waking World. Our main need InWorld is to reach our dreams, so that's the service that makes the most sense; to lift others towards their dreams. That's why the Sunray Guilds are so cool. They give us a framework to work together towards our dreams. There are different Guilds for different types of dreams, like Majik, Myths, Poetry and Story Telling. There's even a Guild to explore the way the dreams of Dreamscape affect us in other worlds." "Wow. That is cool. Could you show me what the Tarot reading says about all of this?" "Sure. Good idea. There were some very interesting parts of the reading we did on this subject that we can elaborate on. For example, this card is amazing. Right in the position that represents the question is the King of Wands. He's filled with energy. He works hard. He leads. He's filled with passion. That's exactly the energy you need to get up out of your rut and get going beyond your self." "That is amazing. I'm trying to understand why I should work, and this card is perfect. It's as if the Tarot were speaking to me, showing me a neat, uplifting way to orient my thoughts. I'm just wondering, Phred. How do you know the meaning of the King of Wands? I don't see how I'll ever learn all these cards." "Well, there are three cards in each suit which are called court cards; the Page, the Queen and the King. As I interpret the card, I think about the qualities of that court card. For example, the King represents masculine qualities if leadership, expertise, and energy. Then I apply those qualities to the card's suit. The Wand suit indicates energy, intensity, action. I think of the Wand as a piece of wood, which can be used to build or to burn, to fight or to defend. After thinking about the quality of the card combined with the suit, I then apply it to the position in the reading. There's a lot to think about it, but when you get the hang of it, it makes sense." "Wow. That sounds like a lot of work. Oops. There goes that word, 'work' again. So tell me in your words how the King of Wands applies to the reading." "Since the King of Wands is an action oriented card, I think the Tarot is telling you that if you want to understand the question, you have to think in terms of action, energy. Don't sit around waiting for people to come to you. Go out and find them, and don't be afraid to work. If you want the energy to move, then move it. The maleness of the King might be thought of as being strong and not wimpy about pushing through your own mental laziness." "Okay. That is direct. What else can I learn from this reading?" "Remember the two cards that represented personal frustration and anger at being trapped within the self?" "Yes. One of the cards shows an angry, sneaky looking man. He looks like he has stolen five swords." "Yes, that's the one. The number five suggests the five senses of the body. The person in that card is angry at being trapped in a physical body with physical needs. That's the very frustration we've come to Dreamscape to get away from." "You're a riot, Phred. What a funny way to think of Dreamscape. What about the other card. I didn't really understand it." "The other card was the seven of Ankhs. That card indicates addiction or obsession. In this reading it refers to an addiction to the self. Just like other addictions, we become so involved with taking care of our selves, that we can't let go long enough to see if we're putting our energy in the right place. If we hurt others, or worse, ignore others, we don't see it because we're trapped into keeping all of our attention for ourselves. Your dilemma right now is a perfect example of this trap of the self. You want to take an active part in Dreamscape but you don't want to 'give up' your time. That's a trap. You can't get the friendships you want because you're unwilling to let go of your time." "Whew. Ouch. It's weird thinking about being so fixated on taking care of myself that I get cut off from others, and then I start hurting. But as you explain it, I can see the syndrome," Hannah said. Phred pointed to the third card in the group. "But now look at this card. It's the Rose. That's the card of mystical longing, and it's in a position which would indicate a hope. The hope in this reading is that beyond the self, there something truly transcendent." "That's odd seeing the Rose next to those two painful cards." "Yes, but it makes sense. In this reading, the person in the trap feels a deep longing for something more sublime, more powerful, more compelling than the daily grind of getting through the day and taking care of the self. In fact, the Rose represents longing for the truest, deepest Reality that is within us. It's a beautiful card." "I wish I could get past myself, just the way you're saying. Seeing that Rose reminds me of a longing I haven't thought about in a long time. Does this reading say anything more about how to get in touch with that feeling?" "Yes, there is another card we didn't talk about. It is the High Priestess, and it is in the position called 'the immediate future'." "The woman in the card looks beautiful and compelling and impressive," Hannah sighed. "But what is a Priestess? In Waking World I've seen plenty of Priests, but not one single Priestess." "The word Priestess is an ancient word, and it doesn't really mean in a church or anything. She represents the feminine power of spiritual guidance." "That's a beautiful image. I can't quite grasp what it means though." "One of the problems in understanding the meaning of the High Priestess is that we live in an age when guidance of all kinds is traditionally seen as male. The Priests that you mention are just one example. The leaders of state and war, even our images of God, are almost always male. So in our thinking we often think of leadership as authoritarian and not very compassionate. But when you feel the Rose of longing, and want to know how to follow it, you are moved by the gentle, and yet powerful loving forces within your psyche. This inner motion naturally cries out for the feminine strengths of sensitivity and longing." "That is beautiful," Hannah said. "But how does it relate to becoming part of a group and working in the Guilds?" "When we work together in guilds, no one is telling you what to do. We nurture each other and share our selves so that we can all help each other find our dreams. These principles are 'spiritual' in the sense that they force us to think beyond ourselves." "That High Priestess seems to be calling me. I'd really like to meet her. Is there a female teacher in my future?" Hannah pursued. "I hope so," Phred said. "I hope there are many teachers in your future. We all have so much to learn. It would be a sad world if we couldn't learn from each other. But it's never a good idea to worry about the future. Instead look for the guiding images the Tarot invokes in your heart. The energy of the High Priestess is moving through you when you are in harmony with her qualities: for example, when you share a nurturing trust for feelings of longing, in yourself or others; or when you engage in loving service beyond the self. When you are sensitized to these gentle qualities, it is much easier to follow your heart in a spiritual way." "Spiritual values --- hmmm. That's sublime. I'm going to reach for that. When I first came to Dreamscape, I was looking for enter- tainment. But the longer I'm here, the more I see that I may actually be growing!" "It's one of the most amazing things about service. The more you try to serve, the deeper you plumb the depths of your own heart." {!} - TG's Hatemail No 8 - {!} by Throbbing Gristle HMS Whew, a busy week has passed and my actions and your reactions took away a lot from my inworld time. A good way to save some money I guess. Some weeks ago I started questioning to find out why people come to the Dreamscape. I gave 3 or four possibilities to choose from, but did not receive a single answer that just crossed one of my choices, which were Roleplay, Chat, Adventure game or something different. Nearly all people I asked tended to a mixture of choices or sent me personal comments. Thank you all for your help! At least, the fact that no concrete answers were given shows an essential thing about WA, the variety of possibilities. A problem occuring from this variety is that if not all people come here to play the same, common game, tensions occur, and many inworld problems just arise for missing knowledge of this fact, that the opponent/other avatar could be playing by other rules than we play ourselves in the moment. Chat. This is surely the easiest part. Chat is always possible if two people are just willing to communicate. But what if chat is combined with roleplay for one of the 2 persons chatting? What do we tell? Do we talk the truth or do we run around spreading little lies and misery? As soon as a person is roleplaying here, and lots of people are, he necessarily will not always say the things that the other one might expect to hear. When I myself was new in the dreamscape it was a pretty chatroom for me. It still is, but now it has become much more. Roleplay. I felt it somehow. My first avatar here could have been on his way to become a sunray or golden knight. He was always so nice. And boring cause he failed to find a real personality. His followers did. They are six in the moment, and unless you do not ESP them, (I regard ESP as a personal talk between the real world persons), they all might answer the same question in a different way. I had to find out that the more I brought variety into them, the more I felt myself giving them different manners and sometimes even language. Chosing a male body for one lately opened a lot of new possibilities. He moves different in any way, and when I see him doing this on my screen, I automatically pay tribute to this and let him do different things. Throbbing Gristle is the one I identify with most; that's why I write through her hands. But that's not what I wanted to talk about. I just wanted to tell this to the people who just come for chat, because I found out they often don't know that there might be something more to life online. A person acting weird isn't necessarily a weirdo. Talk to them, try to find out. Or even try it yourself. Chat is great, but you can do it in many places, you do not really need WA for this, WA is so much more. * * * TG & The Empire seems to have become an endless story. But suddenly I see things happening. A controversy seems to have started. I saw discussions on the street, discussions in the forum, people wondering if the Empire is a democratic organization. Is it? I got a letter from Spibrother, who made some interesting comments about this. Here we go: Beginning of Letter ------------------- Hey I actually felt the urge to write a readersletter (ok more like a readers-postcard) to ESP! ... reason is, not uncommon these days, the EMPIRE... Left aside the annoying activities by some EMPs (you know what I mean) "Lurking-in-da-cloud-till-black-avatar-dude-comes-then-get-the-troops- landed-to-save-the-newbie") which can be avoided if you got some luck ... left aside the contents of the EMPIRE homepage which makes you wanna smile (someone must have spend hours fumbling the ranks system together, ROFL) ... all that left aside there is something which I discovered recently that made me REALLY MAD & ANGRY... the headline of a file named EMPIREDE.TXT, (which can be found in the forum) which is: "Das deutsche Empire erwacht / The german Empire is awakening...". This needs some explanation for the non-german readers: the german phrase "Das deutsche Empire erwacht" sounds very familiar to those who know the german history, it reminds of the phrase "Deutschland erwache" which was used by the Nazis as a slogan to bring the masses on their side... Considering the standard of the homepage I thought that the dude behind it must be pretty young and maybe he was not quite aware which phrase he was using, but when I discovered his (Mirical Bernd EMP K, in RW: Bernd Glasstetter ) e-mail adresses there was one which belonged to a university, so I can assume that he is not as young as I thought and that he had received a fair amount of history lessons at school, at least enough to know what those phrases he uses are about. Das deutsche Empire erwacht --- Deutschland erwache??? Sorry, I expect from a College Student that he knows what he is doing, so I assume that he chose those words on purpose. The whole impression I got of the prime mover (not the single members, most of them seem to not have a clue what it's all about and seem to be kinda happy to be member of a group) hidden behind the EMPIRE, namely a mixture of pathological craving for recognition, young boy-scouts gone sour and fascist thinking patterns, that impression has proven true to me by that stuff. I am sorry - NOT! I don't need no police in Kymer and I don't need no GESTAPO too! But this is the direction the EMPIRE is heading towards to, with all that military ranking and secret agent infiltration stuff. Some of you might have seen that macro which I am posting from time to time (mostly when some wannabe cops are acting silly...): > Join the CAPOK/KAFA > CommunistAvatarsPartyOfKymer / KymerAntiFascistAction > Join the CAPOK/KAFA Well the whole macro was a load of bollocks until today, but I think that at least that KAFA part of it seems to be necessary pretty soon. DA MIGHTEE SPITBROTHER [100722,1151] or 10722.1151@compuserve.com http://www.europeans.com/spitbrother ----------------------------------------------- Hard, but mostly it seems true to me. Germany is always a difficult place for this, where you need a lot of feeling to handle such things. Some don't have. While I asked myself what might be happening in the heads of those who feel attracted by such a slogan to join the empire, I picked up a nice conversation on the street that gave me the answer to this: SIMPLY NOTHING. Seems like the only reason to enter a group is that you can put a medal on your jacket, like the EMP-Sign. If I enter a group, I have to find out FIRST if I can agree with their aims ... so I fear this is a specific example: (I only changed the personal name of nameless) Dolores Haze: nameless, do you also belong to the people who think the german Empire is awakening? nameless EMP L: ??? Dolores Haze: Was written in the Forum .Great commercial... nameless EMP L: We are just starting.... Dolores Haze: ...and you do not notice, that this all can be under- stood very differently? Thomas Herz: Nameless?? You are beginning? Dolores Haze:I was near to vomit when I read that. Thomas Herz: Is that meant to be a joke? nameless EMP L: I did not read ot yet Dolores Haze: great...but you are an EMP Lord nameless EMP L: It's only in (the forum) since today, or? Thomas Herz: You are more than 100 members and just starting? Dolores Haze: no, this is in since longer.... nameless EMP L: The german part is new Sigh. Thats it. Dont watch information. Just join in. I will probably feature some more parts of this conversation next week. I was very short on time this week, so nearly couldn't get it all together. Sorry if things are missing. Next week I can spend more time on this. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Kymer-conomics ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - June Interim Report - {!} By Mufasa, Financial Editor Accompanying GIFs: CHARTJUN.GIF CHARTHED.GIF Last week, readers were promised a Baseline Guide for the month of June, including all auction and store data available. Because two major auction galleries held sales after this week's ESP! deadline, the following is an interim report, containing available date through noon, WAT on Saturday, June 29. Next week, we will update the Baseline Guide to include this weekend's auctions and to gather up data from unreported auctions. In the mean- time, this guide should allow you to shop with a bit more savvy this week. Chart 1 (CHARTJUN.GIF) contains a self-explanatory summary of the most popular collectibles sold at Kymer auctions. For Mufasa's token, the best investments among today's common col- lectibles are: 1) Baby Bears, which are holding value well despite a generally depressed market, with relatively narrow price variances above and below the average, and which will be increasingly desirable for Kymer's many teddy collectors; 2) Ferns, which continue to be among the most desirable of turf decorations, and which are also holding value well; 3) Heart Chests, which have dropped to a reasonable price during the last two months, and which are useful as turf decorations, as gifts, and which have the additional virtues of attractiveness and compactness. Expect a major price rebound when these chests are removed from the acolyte vendo within the next few weeks. Common collectibles that call for caution are: 1) Flowers: Buy only if you can buy for this month's average price, or less. It's a matter of individual taste, but too many flowers in a turf can create a mausoleum look, to be avoided unless you are a Vampire! A price below 700 tokens is a "buy" signal, because flowers at that price become very affordable gifts. 2) Rose heads: These are subject to wide price fluctuations and color does matter. The most popular colors seem to be blue 80/4, rare petal pink and dark pink, and bright vendo white. Gold 40, green 57/green 109, rare reds, and steel 78/brown 13 are in the middle range of popularity. Bronze appears to be the least popular color among potential purchasers. Buy for yourself, your turf, or for gift-giving, but do not buy for investment purposes now. The market is too saturated. 3) Recently-rare food items: These also call for caution. If you are a Kymer foodie, a price below 300 tokens is a definite buy signal; buy at 500 for personal use or for gifts; above 500, exercise extreme caution. These items are just beginning to appear at auction, and wild price swings are still the norm. The most interesting items sold at auction this month were the skull in a sack, at the Theatre des Vampyres auction on June 22, and the clue piece sold at the Duckolyte Benefit Auction on June 19. The female skull, one of only two in Kymer, and red velvet sack, on the block for one money, sold to Mage LeadMan for a whopping 80,000 tokens. The clue piece, a one of a kind item, was bought by Clover for a somewhat more modest 42,000 tokens. Every collector's dream-within-a-dream is owning that special, extremely rare item. Congratulations, Mage LeadMan and Clover! Of course, Kymer is the ultimate place to get a head, and CHARTHED.GIF is a summary chart of the heads sold at auction through noon, WAT, on Saturday, June 29. Part 1 of the chart summarizes the sales of heads presently in Kymer vendos, but painted with rare head spray. Follow the saga of a certain Martian Head, painted rare white, which three of Mufasa's less-frugal inworld family members bought and sold during the month of June (Why ask why?). Also note the disparity in prices between two rare blonde Wendy heads, having sold for 650 and 1100 tokens, respectively. Mufasa suggests that those who want vendo heads painted rare should buy the head, then buy one or two sprays of the desired rare paint(s) from street vendors. Also of note: The Duckolyte Benefit Auction is no longer accepting consignments of vendo heads painted rare. Part 2 of the chart summarizes the prices paid for heads which are unavailable in either the avatar or acolyte vendos. The price of the Gingerbread Head is holding steady in the mid-4,000 range. If you have the opportunity to get one for 3,500 or less, buy now, and hold until late August. According to rumor, new heads will be available in Kymer vendos on July 19. Canny investors will save their tokens, knowing that auction prices will take a steep, temporary dive when the new heads appear. Buy attractively-priced rare heads in mid-to late July, and take your profits in mid-August. Auctioneers, retailers, street traders, and investors, we want to hear from you! As DreamTurfs, the Turf of the Month Contest's judging committee, entered this playfully-inspired turf it was apparently no surprise that White Rose's dwelling would be filled with child-like overtones. A cordial picnic area is at the threshold of this four- room turf. This cheery entrance welcomes those to White Rose's own little piece of cyberspace. With lots of party supplies and an air of celebration, one can easily surmise that White Rose likes to indulge in fun! Even her teddy bear friends were so caught up in their own rendition of the Conga dance! It was so entertaining that we didn't dare interrupt their festivities. We moved on to the next room. Inspired by White Knight, who is White Rose's significant other, this room contains a stately fireplace, and a relaxing environment. Slightly formal in essence, this is the one locale you may find White Rose contemplating her responsibilities as Assistant SysOp in the Worlds Away Community Forum or perhaps involved in a more serious conversation with an associate over tea and dessert. Just outside, a formal garden brims with rare coloured roses-- no two are alike! With all intentions of unghosting to smell these beauteous flowers, I felt it was best admired from the clouds. Amongst the well planned landscaping, an avatar risks stepping on one of these most prized flowers. Next stop on the tour is the play room. This is really a special area, everyone is invited to ... well ... PLAY! Open one or all of the many chests full of White Rose's own treasures. She has interesting stories to tell of how she acquired many of the items. Try on some heads, toss snowballs at your fellow playmates, what ever fun you can dream up! You are encouraged to make a mess . The signs on the wall then give us a gentle reminder to please clean up before we leave ... and as that time came I felt a little more like a child myself -- a little less structured. The other members of DreamTurfs may have had other reasons for giving this turf high rankings, but I suspect that its warm-hearted ambience is what really one us over. On behalf of the DreamTurfs committee, CONGRATULATIONS to White Rose on winning June's Turf of the Month Contest and thank you for making us feel so at home. Love to you all! {!} - Trivia Challenge Report - {!} For the week of June 24-27 By Megret, Srk Monday, June 24 ----------------- With 14 players (on a Monday! Opposite Clover's Auction!) It was a the closest game ever -- three people tied for 1st place at 16 points! Since the game was running overtime, I switched the rules so speed actually counted. (A very rare thing at the Madhouse since my own experience as a trivia player always left me out when only the FIRST correct answer got 4 points, the second 3, and so on -- normally we do NOT play this way in *any* game I host.) Anyhow, the tie was resolved with one question. And the result was: PhishHead, one of my most faithful helpers, when it comes to arriving on time and holding the door prizes for me, *finally* won for the first time, and chose the Mystery Chest, containing a rare pink Rose head and matching body paint. Golden Knight Harlequin finished second, and chose the fern. And Mighty Mike, coming in third, got the Valentine. Tuesday, June 25 ---------------- This is my only afternoon game, so I try to gear it toward the Europeans. It must have worked, since all three winners were not from the USA. Oh the other hand, there was a very poor turnout, one of the worst I've ever experienced in a scheduled game - only 6 players! (Well, seven, if you want to count one who came in on the last question.) @Dark Sun@, Duckolyte Wing was the clear winner with 17 points and chose the Mystery Chest, which contained a rose head painted with rare paint, and matching rare body paint. But four others were tied at 12 points for 2nd and 3rd. (This in a game of six players, remember...). Wish Monger, Prince Stupid, Rogils, and Sunray Sir Launce battled it out for second and third place. Prince Stupid came in second, and choose the Flowers. Rogils came in third and got the Valentine. In spite of a fair amount of complaining, ALL the winners were German, which I found very satisfying, since my Tuesday game is written with the Europeans specifically in mind. Wednesday, June 26 ------------------ Once again, disaster struck, and we discovered another BUG in the program <> During the second half of the game, the scoring program decided to subtract points from some players and added them to others -- definitely an interesting twist. But, I've learned! Pencil and paper were at hand, and, while it was frustrating, the final results were fairly obvious. Juilanna walked away with 1st place -- I think she chose a Mystery Chest. That left PhishHead, Rogils, and Rob Bob, tied for 2nd and third. So we entered the longest playoff tie I've ever had at the Madhouse, with no single question deciding 2nd and 3rd ... after a hard fought battle. Rogils came in second (I believe -- you should see my handwriting... and I'm writing this report two days later..) with Rob Bob coming in third. {!} - WA Raffle Winners- {!} By Acolyte Lynx Winners of June 29 Drawing 1st place.............4,000T TexWilly Wonka 2nd place.............2,000T Mage Leadman 3rd place.............1,200T Agis 4th place............. 800T Beverly Next week's drawing is Sunday, July 7, 2:00 a.m. WAT at WARsun Inc Please read WARHOW2.TXT in the WorldsAway Life Library for rules and instructions on how to play the WARaffle. Brynne paid a surprise visit and took her turn at hiding for a couple rounds. "Pinkie and the Brains" is a version of hide and seek. One of the co-hosts or the week's celebrity guest hides in some public locale in Kymer. After the Hidden has given the go-ahead signal, the remaining co-host gives the assembled ghosts a secret phrase containing a clue to the location of the Hidden. The first Seeker to find the Hidden and say the secret phrase aloud is the winner of the round. He or she then selects one of the locked prize chests, each of which contains a secret surprise. By winning a round, an avatar becomes eligible to compete in the Grand Championship round on the last Thursday of the month. Each month's Grand Champion receives a very special rare prize. Round #1: Brains hid at the rainbow turf paint vendo. The clue was SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW. Kira won the round, and selected chest #4 which contained a Lacey Heart Head with rare-painted lace. Round #2 Passion hid in the Rose garden. The clue was IF THERE BE THORNS. Unga-Bunga won the round, and selected chest #2 which contained a piece of rare taffy candy. Round #3 Brynne hid by the animal heads vendo. The clue was BUTTONS & BOWS. Meridienne won this round, but our record-keeper was unable to get us the final information so the prize is unknown. Round #4 Brains hid in the Tabernacle. The clue was I DO I DO. Round #5 Brynne hid at the Orbitron at Starway. The clue was FLY ME TO THE MOON. Unga-Bunga, Duckolyte Wing won the Championship Round. He was rewarded with a Christmas Elf Head. The newly-crowned Grand Champion observed that "Pinkie and the Brains" is his very favorite game, to which Brains responded, "Of course it is! Just tonight, you have won both rare taffy and a Christmas Elf Head!" With such great prizes to be won, "Pinkie and the Brains" is rapidly becoming a favorite game of more and more Kymerians. The theme of the game was Duck Soup, and this was the first time that the Duckolytes have used Wert P. Gumby's new trivia program. Mrs. Wert wrote the questions for the game. Although there were a few technical glitches at the beginning of the game, the ghosts in attendance enthusiastically responded to Larry's able hosting of the game. Because Brains, Wing Commander, who usually hosts Duckolyte TriviaMaster has an extensive schedule of business travel during the summer, Larry will be the official host on occasions when the Wing Commander must be absent. Kudos to Larry, Wert, and Mrs. Wert for making another wonderful Duckolyte event possible. We had 16 entries in all. And as they came pouring into my mailbox I was stunned and amazed at the vision unfurling before me. They came from every corner of the world, written by old and young alike, and each one held within it the power and imagination of the dreamer who had written it. All so different - yet all so alike. And I have to tell you, I felt humbled to be part of such a community. There were six judges in all, each one apportioning points out of 6 which will then be calculated to an average per entrant. All the entries were submitted to the judges anonymously (by me. I guess what I am trying to say is this... There are no losers or winners in this contest, not truly. For I believe that in the telling of a story, the creator can derive as much pleasure as the listener. Each entry was unique and very special, as they all came from inside the souls of their makers. We hope all of you can make this very special event and look forward to seeing you there!! {!} - Conversational Misunderstandings - {!} By Musashi General Causes of Misunderstanding in Inworld Conversations between non English speakers (NES) and English speakers (ES) -------------------------------------- 1.) NES use words they are not always 100% sure of. It can be word they have heard in movies or have read without having taken the time to check the true meaning of it. 2) NES who never had real live conversation in English, who only studied literal English, sometimes have difficulties following normal conversation with humor and slang, even though they seem to speak it fluently. 3) As soon as a NES seems to speak fluent English, many ES will assume that he/she understands everything and will use slang and jokes which are hard to understand. 4) What happens often is that the NES who is so proud to be taken as if she/he were an ES doesn't want to tell that she/he doesn't under- stand from time to time. Some conversations might end badly this way because both persons will go their own way and not even realize that the other one is not following the true meaning of what is being said. Misunderstandings because of a Slow computer (SC) and/or slow typist (ST) ------------------------------------------- 1) When you have a slow computer (little RAM, etc.) or you are a slow typist and not an English speaker, that can bring a lot of misunder- standings. People might think that you are rude or strange just because you don't answer directly or sometimes not at all! 2) What they don't know is that you are sweating in front of your computer trying to answer as fast as you can, typing with one finger, correcting the many mistyping and before you hit the return key to finally answer, you discover that on the screen there are already several new questions that have been written. Sending yours at this time would be completely out of the actual context of the conversa- tion. You then sadly erase the whole sentence you were so proud to have written. 3) At that moment, one of the avatar on the screen is asking you if you're away or ESPing. You try this time to make a shorter answer to be sure that you will be able to write it in time: "I'm here" . Happy that this time you placed your answer before the conversation has completely changed. 4) But for the other ones, your quietness and lack of explanation make them think that you're a strange non-talkative person and they avoid you for the rest of the conversation, treating you as part of the screen decoration. Misunderstandings because of Grammar and Syntax Differences in Language ------------------------------------------- French: 1. French speakers sometimes confuse word finishings by -ing and -ed: "Are you boring?" instead of "Are you bored?" for instance. 2. They will have the tendency to use all the words ending with "tion" in French in English without being sure of the real meaning of the word. Many of them have the same meaning in both languages but many have a slight difference, sometimes being polite in one instance but impolite for another 3. Phrasal verbs (verbs made of two words) like, get on, give up, etc. are a big problem for French speakers because if you don't know that it is a phrasal verb, you only understand the verb alone. For instance: Give up will be understood as give (offer) and up (opposite of down) . 4. Because in French, every word is either male or female. This can be confusing when using the different pronoun in English. An object bought in a vendo can this way become easily a She or He which will confuse the other avatar wondering who is the 'she' or 'he' he is talking about. 5.In English it is not really polite to speak of someone in front of that person using a pronoun instead of his/her name. In French, it is more than normal to do so and it looks strange or distant if you speak of someone in his/her presence using his/her name several times in the same sentence. 6. Slang in French and English are both going their own different way and changing continuously. Using it while you are not a master of the language can be very dangerous even if the dictionary translates it for you, it doesn't tell you how rude it is. 7. The same word in one language can be soft slang, but a friendly joke but can be the rudest word you can find in the other language. How to Avoid Misunderstanding: ------------------------------ 1. Be patient, gentle and nice with each other. That is the key! 2. The best thing to do to avoid misunderstanding is to tell everyone that you are a non-English speaker (NES), a slow typist (ST) or have a slow computer (SC). 3. People cannot guess you're running miraculously on a 4 RAM computer with some kind of RAM doubler which barely allow you to stay 20 minutes in world seeing everything moving slowly before crashing. 4. On the other side, English speaker and fast typist should have more patience with other and not fill the screen with one way talk. 5. A good way to do that is by-an ESP conversation to the person who you need to communicate this information with. 6. Misunderstanding because of vocabulary can only be helped by asking the NES to repeat or explain in other terms the word which seems to be misused. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Outworld Stories ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - The Adventures Of Johnny Vendetta - {!} "Anastasia" By DarkWolf Fenrier It was hot in the jungle, sweat poured from my body, the pain in my arm was unbearable, I checked the tourniquet, loosened it and sat down for a rest. God how did I get into this War! I'll tell you how. The war started 6 months ago when the Megatron Corporation found out that there was a huge undiscovered oil reserve in the Peruvian Jungle. Fine no problems there, except that a tribe of undiscovered Indians also lived on top of the reserve and refused to move from the spot to allow the Corp to get the oil. Now normally Megatron would just exterminate these Indians, in their words "no one knew they were there so who would miss them?". Well I'll tell you who: The Founders Of The Earth. The founders are for want of a better description an eco-terrorist group who have the backing and resources of several corporations! The Founders decided that they would save the Indians and deny Megatron the oil and so the fate of this small nation of natives was decided in the boardrooms and courts by some clever negotiation, land deals and courtroom dramas that the land was bought by the founders and the deeds signed over to the Indians. Well you thought that would be the end of the story, but no, loopholes in the laws and the land rights deemed that if none of the Indians lived then the land would return to the state. And with no Indians there to be protected, Megatron would definitely win the next battle; so Megatron hired mercenaries to take out the Indians. I know what you're thinking ... "Oh no Johnny, tell us you're not one of the mercenaries." Well, you can all breathe, this time I'm a good guy. Yep, the Founders found out about the mercenaries Megatron had hired and so got together its own band, and as I am RiffRaff's friend he volunteered my name as well as his own, Doozer's, Yellow Knife, Little Running Bear and some other people I had never met. So there you go. I was in the army, admittedly a mercenary army, but an army none the less. Riff said if we got through this war we could retire though so I guess it was worth the effort. Well if you hadn't guessed, my job was the cushy one, you know go load yourself up with the latest in camouflage equipment, chameleon suits, thermal masking, ECM/ECCM generators that kind of thing. Take my trusty Barret Arms .50 cal and go head out into the jungle for weeks on end living with the snakes, ants, mosquitos and other worse things. And if by chance I should see the enemy -- they kill key personnel in their ranks, Officers, N.C.O's, heavy weapons men, radio ops, those sort of personnel and just generally leave them confused and hurting. Well it was on one of these *Patrols* where my story really starts. I was 3 days in country when I observed a merc patrol, nothing unusual and no real serious *tags* But I thought the patrol was too small to be on its own and must therefore be part of a larger force. I decided to shadow the patrol to its destination where it joined up with what could be best described as a large assault force. Being on sniper duty you don't carry radios, you arrange drop points and pickup points before hand. It's safer for the sniper that way. At least that's what they tell me. Anyway this force was up to something and it was going to be big! I watched the force for several hours picking out possible and definite targets. That's when the s**t hit the fan so to speak and I noticed a movement to my left, a very graceful movement. I turned, quickly drawing my Pistol but it was kicked from my hand. Standing there was the most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. She was dressed in a tight black body suit making subtle gestures with her hands and two blades one on each arm appeared from her wrists. Great cyber spurs! This woman meant business. I quickly back rolled out of reach and flipped myself into a standing position. The woman pressed a button on a device on her belt, shimmered and was gone! Great, more toys. I drew my small Half-Katana also known as a Wakazashi. I know, not a soldier's weapon, but a Yakuza friend of mine gave it to me and taught me how to use it. And believe me it's damn useful in a knife fight. I slowly turned a small circle keeping my ears open for any sound which might give the woman's position away. Then in a split second I saw a shimmer and felt something cold cut my cheek, I winced in pain but took a wild swing at where the attack came from, nothing. I edged my way slowly towards the pistol laying on the ground 60ft away, moving slowly and staying on edge. Another shimmer and I felt her spurs slash across my hand, the pain forced me to drop my sword. I scooped up the sword and made a dash for the gun, I saw another shimmer in front of me and felt a foot connect with my face. The pain was considerable as I flew through the air to land in a heap on the ground. This Woman was toying with me I realised; she could have killed me at anytime but instead was just causing me some painful but as yet minor wounds. I rolled over onto my back to catch my breath, tightened the grip on my sword. I see a shimmer 30ft away and then the woman reappears. "Hello Johnny" she says smiling at me, she is so in shape that she doesn't even look slightly tired from her activities, and how did she know my name? "Hello miss?" I replied in my usual charming manner. "You may call me Anastasia." She smiled again. "I've wanted to meet you for a long time". "Anastasia, that's a beautiful name, and befitting such a beautiful lady as yourself" God, I'm a smoothy. "Thank you, and you are a handsome man, but that isn't why I wanted to meet you." Her smile was pure honey, this woman was far to beautiful to be so dangerous. A true black widow. "So why do you wish to meet me?" Might as well cut to the chase, as you know I hate small talk. "Oh quite simple. I've always wanted to meet you so that I could kill you!" Wow, she dropped that little bomb on me and she was still smiling; that's one cool cookie. "Hmmm well nice to meet you I guess, shall we continue?" I'm a cool cookie too, and might as well feed her a line just to see how cool she is. "You don't want to know why? Well I'll tell you, I have always been told stories about you, what such a great hitman you were, well I wanted to follow in your footsteps to be like you and then to be better than you". She paused to check my reaction. I remained calm. "And now I am as good as you; but the only way to prove I am better is to kill you!". She looked at me and I noticed a flicker of emotion in her eyes, what emotion it was I couldn't say, but it was emotion none the less, and in that instant I knew I had a chance. I flipped to my feet, and once again she shimmered and disappeared. I had a plan but it was going to hurt, I made a play for the gun. This time it was just a feint to draw her out. She slashed me across the chest, again not a serious wound. I new her plan now, not only was she intent on killing me but she was determined to make me suffer and humiliate me in the process, just to prove to me that she is better than I. Fine but I saw the flaw in her plan. "Better skills do not an expert make," expertise comes with experience and I got plenty. I made several more plays for the gun and suffered more cuts and blows. As I observed her fighting I got to know her style, by trade she was obviously a kick assassin. And as such I began to anticipate her moves. As the fight progressed I began to parry most of her blows; this made her angry and she began to grunt with every blow, making her even easier to parry. Unfortunately her earlier cuts and blows began to take their toll on me and if I didn't finish it soon she would! I fought her for a few minutes longer then decided to go with my plan. I let her dig her Spur really deep into my arm, dropping down to one knee as if she got me in the ribs, hell it hurt but it had to be done! I heard her approach, silly girl turned her camouflage device off. I reached into my belt pouch and remove a flash pack, these small devices are like super powered flash bulbs blinding their targets for several seconds. She approached, and when she was in range I jumped up thanks to my reflex boosters. I hit the flash pack, closing my eyes I felt it go off and heard her gasp as it did its job. I followed up with a thrust from my sword into her stomach. I twisted the blade and removed it. She fell to her knees with a look of shock and unbelief on her face. She moved her wrists slightly and retracted her spurs, falling back to the floor, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth. "You win" she whispered. I knelt down by her side. "It's not about winning" I say "It's about experience, survival, pride, and ambition, all good things in the right place and time. You failed because you didn't have the experience, and your pride and ambition got the better of you! I succeeded because I have experience and I needed to survive. I didn't get where I am from training alone, and believe me you're not the first to try to kill me!" She looked up at me and smiled "I wish now that maybe we could have been friends." "I do also; I could have taught you tricks only the experienced know, But not to worry." I brushed her hair away from her face. As I waited for her to die, I heard people approaching through the bush. Someone must have seen the flash pack go off. Anastasia heard the approaching mercs too. She looked up at me "You had better go, quickly, don't get caught on my account." I grabbed my stuff and turned to leave. "Goodbye" "Goodbye" she replied. Her eyes closed, and I escaped into the jungle. Be sure to watch out for a new Johnny Vendetta adventure soon. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Readings can be tailored to your time, questions, interest, and how much you would like to spend (i.e., longer, more complex readings would cost more). I encourage you to give this a try. All readings would be through ESP if privacy is desired and your confidentiality is assured. I hope you'll give it a try and will find Tarot to be fun, informative, and insightful. To make an appointment for a specific time, either weekends any time or weeknights after 5 p.m. WAT, send me an e-mail with possible times and we will arrange it. Otherwise you can approach me in-world for an impromptu reading or to make a time for later. But please don't interrupt if I'm playing a game such as Worlds of Fortune (my favorite) or Kymer or such. Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
