Team -------------------------- It gives me great pleasure to announce that Mufasa is joining the English ESP! staff as its Financial Editor. She will be collecting and analyzing information that affects the Kymer economy; most specifically, items which are sold at auctions, sales conducted between traders, store owners and collectors to other collectors and the average Kymer consumer. Read more about her plans for this subject in our new Kymer-conomics section! And the Winner is ... --------------------- Our ESP! Writing Competition has come to a close. This past week has been a busy one for all of us on the ESP! team who served as judges. It was a tough call to make as all the stories were done very well. But we had to make a choice and make it we did! The winners are announced in our cover story and I'd like to offer my personal congratulations to everyone! I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr and Mrs Wert P Gumby for taking their time to be our Guest Judges. How I Arrived in Kymer ---------------------- I dunno. One day I woke up on a ship I learned was the Argo and it was taking me to a place called Kymer. That's all I know. When asked my name, I scratched my then bald head and said, "uhhh ... what's my name?" and then, since I was absolutely clueless, the Captain of the Argo said, "I know! You look just like a Brynne. Do you like that name?" So that's how I got my name. But how I got here? Where I came from? After reading all the stories by others about how they arrived here, it's pretty obvious I'm suffering from amnesia and that I obviously came from *somewhere*. Just where that somewhere is, however, is a mystery to me; but until recently, it's just never been important to me where I came from and how I got here. I'm living a full life in Phantasus, meeting all sorts of people, helping where I can and just generally keeping myself very, very, very busy. But you know, I am curious now as to how I got here from wherever it was I came. So, in my spare time, I'm going to be in hypnosis to see what can be dredged up from my subconscious. Soon as I have any info, you'll be the first to know! (Whew! That lets me off the hook with Dread ... I *think*! ) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Cover Story ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - ESP! Writing Competition Results - {!} By Dread Congratulations Miss QTPie! This paragraph is just for you, so we can tell you how much we enjoyed reading your arrival in Kymer and that you are the first prize winner. Check your mailbox. Congratulations to all our winners. I will be contacting you soon to make arrangements for you to pick up your prizes. It was very difficult to judge these strories against each other, but we are confident that the results are fitting. Having written my own arrival in Kymer just four weeks ago, I can tell you the judging stage this week required just as much effort. At the close of the competition last weekend the *six* judges (well I already had mine didn't I!) each received a pack containing 22 entries. For days we read story after story and enjoyed every single one of them. Then on Thursday we fused our results into a Leaderboard and spent the second half of the judging analyzing the results. As you know, we were looking for the most interesting and entertaining stories. We soon found out how difficult it is to compare short against long or stories written by the younger members of our community against those written by the more experienced. We wrote our comments on every entry, and debated the placings in our leaderboard, reviewing each entry on several criterion before deciding to call the leaderboard a table of results. We also decided to award a new prize for the best from a youngster. Seven entries had to be out of the prizes and these alone were difficult to decide on, each judge expressing the same concerns that there should not be any losers at all. This is why we have we have a new prize list as seen below. This week we announce the winners of the ESP! competition. Thanks to the entrants for their hard work. Thanks to the Werts for being our guest judges, we know they enjoyed it, and to the rest of the judges who put in so much time and thanks to Oracle Teresias for providing a great first prize. The competition was a huge success and you'll have the opportunity to read all of the entries over the comming weeks. Enjoy. THE FIRST PRIZE WINNER {!} - How I arrived in Kymer - {!} By Miss QTPie The restaurant was packed, as usual. This part of China town was always popular, but on this particular Saturday night, it seemed that all of London had decided to pop out for a plate of steaming noodles. I pushed my way purposefully through the crowded lobby, making polite noises at trodden on feet, and clutching my shoulder bag to me like a baby. "Excuse me." The waiter looked up from his desk with a pained expression on his face. "I have a table booked, in the name of Samson?" He ran a spindly finger down the list of names in front of him. "Ahhh.. yes. Step this way Miss." He wove his way skillfully between the rows of tightly packed tables as I hurried after, still clutching my bag to my chest. Snippets of half whispered conversations drifted up from people seated in small groups, like the whir of ghosted voices you hear when tuning a radio. Jason was already seated, a half empty glass of beer on the table in front of him. It's funny, I still say half empty, even though Jason is always telling me it's half full. Forever the pessimist, that's what he says. But then, until Jason walked into my life, I guess I didn't have much to be optimistic about. I smiled broadly as I squeezed into the seat opposite him. "Am I late?" "No, I was early." He returned my smile and reached for his drink. The waiter thrust a menu into my hand and hurried off on more unfinished business, carefully avoiding catching the eyes of a man desperately waggling his finger for attention. "So," I reached over and touched Jason's strong hand, the instant feeling of electricity surging up me as it always did when I was close to him, "What's the big secret?" He had phoned earlier that day, said he needed to meet and that it couldn't wait. I was supposed to work late tonight on a big presentation for tomorrow, but I'd caught an edge in his voice as he spoke. Was it excitement? We'd been dating almost a year now and right from the start I knew it was meant to be. It all felt so right. From the way we seemed to always be thinking the same thing at the same time, to the way out bodies seemed to slot comfortably together after we'd made love. Everything fitted. It was just a question of time before he asked me to marry him. And the flock of butterflies gathering now in the pit of my stomach were telling me tonight was the night. He gently withdrew his hand from mine and opened the leather bound menu in front of him. "Let's order first, talk can come later". He seemed uncomfortable, almost embarrassed. I smiled warmly to myself. He needn't be nervous, of course I was going to say yes! We chose several dishes and chatted quietly about the day's events as we sipped our drinks and waited for the food. Finally it arrived, sizzling and steaming on hot trays. I wrestled with my chopsticks as Jason deftly scooped his up and started to pile snakes of noodles into the delicate china bowl in front of him. I wasn't really hungry anyway. Too excited. But that was good, as I never did manage to get much in my mouth at a Chinese restaurant. As the evening drew on, the conversation between us became more and more forced. It was getting late, and half the people in the restaurant had left. Young, shiny faced waiters busied themselves with cleaning up and changing tablecloths. And then I noticed an old man making his way towards us. His face was deeply grooved with experience, and a strange serenity seemed to nestle in his slanted eyes as he pushed a mop of grey hair back across his forehead. "Will you be having any dessert?" The words slipped slowly out of his mouth, like syrup from a laden spoon. Jason looked at me and raised his eyebrows in question. "No thanks. Just a tea please". I smiled softly at the old man, marveling at the youthful glint in his eyes. Jason nodded his agreement and went back to studying the stains on the tablecloth as the old man shuffled steadily away. "Oh it's no good Jason. You've been talking around the houses all night. What on earth was the big urgency on meeting tonight?" I felt I had been biting my tongue too long. It was time to force the issue. Jason looked up and ours eyes met for the first time properly that evening. "You're right. We must talk. Even though this is not easy". The butterflies which had been sleeping peacefully in my stomach suddenly whipped up into a frenzy, like Autumn leaves caught in a sudden breeze. "Look. The best thing to do is just come out and say it. You're a really great girl Katie, and you will make someone really happy one day ... But ... I've met someone else ... It's over." The words hit me like a bolt of lightening, striking the frolicking butterflies dead in one violent hit. I sat and stared at him in disbelief as he looked uncomfortably down at his hands. This was not supposed to happen. It can't be true. I had a thousand questions. Why, who, when, how ... but they were lodged firmly in my throat as I sat and stared in dumb shock. Jason looked up, the pink tinge to his cheeks deepening to a glowing red as he saw the expression on my face. I wanted to scream. To beg him to change his mind. What had I done? What had I not done? Whatever it was I could make it better. I knew I could. But all my bewildered mind could do was push a single tear out of my eye. I felt it roll a hot path down my left cheek and watched in a dreamlike state as Jason pushed his chair back and began to stand. I heard his voice somewhere in the distance, as if it were floating to me across an impossible chasm. "I'm sorry Katie, truly I am. I didn't want to hurt you, but it's better this way...." He reached into his wallet and laid a pile of crisp notes on the table before giving me one last apologetic look and turning swiftly for the door. Out of the restaurant. Out of my life. The single tear dropped from my chin and splashed onto the shiny chopstick rest in front of me, sending a flash of bright light up into the room. Then, without warning, the rest of the lights in the room seemed to dim and separate into shards of prismatic colors as hot tears began to fill my eyes. I heard a soft slow voice behind me. "Is everything alright?" I spun my head to the left, confused and suddenly unaware of where I was. The old man was looking at me intently, his peculiar eyes burning up the tears as he slowly came into focus. I swiped at the rivers of salt water on my cheeks, blinking back the rest of the tears. "No..." It was all I could say. But it seemed to be enough. It seemed to me that with that one word I had told the old man the story of my life. And he understood it more perfectly than any other person in the world. He understood the loneliness of an only child, growing up with no father to know, and who's mother had drifted away from life at the command of an ugly warrior named cancer when I was just seven years old. He understood the isolation of a person desperately shy, locked away from the crowded world by self applied shackles. Who's spirit had been set free by the strength and understanding of a man. A man who had just now crushed that same blooming spirit beneath his heal without even looking back to see what he had trodden on. His face was serenity itself. There was no sorrow this old man had not seen. He moved slowly around the table with a fluidity that belied his aging looks. Not a word did he speak. But in his eyes I saw a thousand stories untold. He reached out a gnarled fist until it hovered over the table just before me, then slowly unfurled his fingers to reveal a golden brown fortune cookie lying in the palm. Silently I took the biscuit, so fascinated by its curious curves that for a moment I forgot my heart-break. I turned it slowly in my fingers before glancing back, a million questions finally finding their way up through the tangled web of my emotions. I lifted my head back up to face the old man but he was gone. I snapped my head to left and right. It was impossible that he might have made it to an exit already. But he was gone. Not even a swinging door to betray his departure. I looked back to the cookie in my trembling hands then braced each end between thumb and forefinger and gently snapped it open. The crisp golden case crumbled away to reveal a tiny slip of paper. I unrolled it carefully and focused my eyes on the ornate text upon it -- *Seek not your dreams, for your dreams shall find you.* I blinked hard, trying to make sense of the message. This was supposed to help? My dreams had just left, through the front entrance of the restaurant. What dreams had I now? Except the dream of returning alone to a cold empty flat. I fingered the remains of the cookie on the table before me. My eyes began to fill as thoughts full of sorrow and pain swept over me once more. As the light began to separate and fade again I noticed a curious golden sparkle in the nest of broken biscuit. I fumbled clumsily to extract it from the crumbs, and found to my surprise a tiny golden key on a chain. It was beautiful. Glistening all the colors of the rainbow. Or was that my watery eyes playing tricks with me? I hooked my finger through the chain and placed it around my neck, turning the little key this way and that. I was startled from my reverie by a smooth faced young waiter who bustled up to removed the notes from the table in front of me. "I'm sorry Miss, but we are closing the restaurant. Did you want anything else?" I shook my head and pushed myself to my feet, shoving the slip of paper deep into my pocket as I headed for the door. Outside the moon was bright. There were less people now and the streets seemed somehow sullied and tired by the passing for so many feet. I shrugged my shoulders up against the early Autumn bite in the night air and hugged my shoulder bag once more to my chest. As I walked, questions began to force their way again into my depressed mind. What had I done? How could I put it right? I wanted things to be the way they were yesterday. Not like this, today... I would call Jason tomorrow. He was just confused. Perhaps I pushed to hard. Perhaps he just needed a little space. Time to think ... Perhaps I should go to his place now. We could talk. Discuss things. Yes! The understanding dawned on me so suddenly that I stopped dead in my tracks. That's what I would do. I would go there now. It would be alright. I could make things better. I knew I could. I turned with a sudden enlightened determination and there, right in front of me was a rickety old wooden door. Had I passed this just now? I couldn't recall. Then my eyes widened with a mixture of wonder and fear as I read the faded message on the ragged paper banner hanging above the door. *Seek not your dreams, for your dreams shall find you.* I blinked, my hand reaching instinctively for the key resting on my breastbone. It felt warm to the touch, and much bigger than it had been when I had placed it there not ten minutes ago. With trembling hands I took the key and placed it in the rusted lock of the splintered old door, my heart beating hard in my throat. I expected a lock that old and weathered to stick and grind but as I nervously applied pressure to the glowing key it seemed to almost turn by itself, gliding smoothly across the cogs and brackets of the ancient mechanism. With a final click the door was unlocked, the secrets held within only a whisper away from being revealed. My chest suddenly tightened with fear. What was I doing? I didn't know what lay behind the door. It could be good, but equally it could be pure evil, waiting, festering, ready to invade my soul with its diseased hands. But somewhere deep inside me I heard the old man's voice, his gnarled arthritic hands beckoning to me. His eyes sparkling with a curious youth. I watched in a dream as my hand reached out and turned the handle. Unable to stop myself. Before me was a world of light, bright colors dancing off every surface like the sunlight on the ocean. I half closed my eyes against the brightness, my pupils contracting to tiny pinpricks against the sudden invasion of daylight. As they grew accustomed to the glare, I gradually began to focus on a single figure, standing with outstretched arms in welcome. "Come, step through the door. There is no danger for you here." In a trance I did as I was instructed, and as my foot touched the glistening cobbles in the street I felt a tingling sensation run up my leg and fill my body with joy and warmth. Somewhere in the distance I heard the door click shut behind me, but I was gazing now in utter wonder at the busy sights of the world around me. Smiling colorful people going peacefully about their business. Lovers walking hand in hand, their dreams of a life and a future reflected in everything they touched. The crisp blue sky wrapping the folds of her skirts around this world, like a mother hen nesting on her precious eggs. "Who are you? What is this place?" My attention turned once more to the figure before me. Clad in flowing purple robes, her face strangely expressionless, yet filled with every expression ever known to mankind. "I am Uni. I am an Oracle. We have waited a long time for your dreams to bring you here. Welcome to Kymer." With that she curled an arm about my shoulders and led me across the cobbles towards a sparkling fountain. As I walked I tried to recall the distant memory of a sadness that had ripped to the very core of my being. But as I looked into the eyes of the Oracle, I felt the last wisps of that sorrow float up and into the vast blue sky above me. And I remember thinking how the youthful glint in those deep passionate eyes seemed somehow familiar. As if, in an other time, another life, I had been held in their gaze once before. Best Entry by A Youngster {!} - How Smiles Arrived In Kymer - {!} By Smileds It all started when, one day, I was travelling through the beautiful skies, in my sleek new plane, installed with bingo radar. "What a boring world this is!" I exclaimed, after travelling for 3 hours (WAT). "No bingo!! I might as well just jump out the plane, without a parachute! Life is not worth living if I can't find a decent game of bingo anywhere!" and I proceeded to pull off my parachute, and open the door. Suddenly, I was startled by an annoying, yet startling sound. It was my bingo radar! It wouldn't shut up! I finally decided to jump out, as this noise was uncontrollable. Luckily, I landed in a group of weirdos, (And I mean VERY strange people) , who were playing bingo! Even though I was amid a giant tomato, a piece of cheese, a panda bear, a hippie, a duck and a big flower, I knew I was home! They all greeted me kindly. And that is how I first arrived in Kymer. If you want to know about the Bingoholics anonymous meetings, I am currently in, that is another story! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Wow! what a great experience it was. You read one entry and though, "yeah that's a winner", then you read the next and changed your mind. I enjoyed the judging most when we had the chance to review each other's comments and ratings. I hadn't fully appreciated just what a good team we have here at both ESP!'s until now. In the same light, I hadn't appreciated how much work was involved in organizing the event, but I'm pleased to say that things went smoothly and I loved it! Let's have another competition, yeah yeah -- suggestions please? Welcome to Mufasa! She will run a new section called Kymer-conomics and will be covering every aspect of our economy, especially con- centrating on the auctions and their prices, and featuring reports and much more. The new Financial Editor Mufasa is great news for ESP! Two main events happened this week. Darkwolf Fenrier became a Sunray in midweek, and Sejanus proposed to Sublime at a special engagement party last night. And it's such a pretty day here in Dreamscape. What's bothering you?" "Oh my mind is spinning. I'm seeing all these InWorld groups and I can't decide which one to join. In fact, I don't even know if I want to join a group. I don't understand what all the fuss is about." "As a free spirit in Dreamscape, you have to make that decision your- self, in harmony with your own heartfelt goals." "Well, why did you join the Sunrays?" Hannah asked. "At some point in my life-journey, I realized that my deepest satis- faction came from helping others. So when I heard about the Sunray pledge, to serve others above my self, it fit perfectly with my life goal." "But why do you need a group?" Hannah pursued. "If you know what you want, why don't you just do it yourself?" "Some people have the idea that giving and serving is for the weak. But my experience has shown me that it requires tremendous strength. In fact, it often requires more strength than I have. The friendships and creativity in the Sunrays have boosted up my ability to serve others." "Well!", Hannah harrumphed. "I'm glad *you're* clear. I'm just not seeing my own way. Perhaps a Tarot reading would give me some insight." "Sure," Phred said. "Let's throw a reading. How would you phrase your question again?" "If we're all free and unique individuals, why should I join a group?" After carefully shuffling the deck, and randomly pulling out eleven cards, Phred placed them in the reading. "Wow. This is amazing. All kinds of powerful images are popping out of this one." "What do you mean?" Hannah asked. "Well. Sometimes a reading takes a different direction or takes on a different intensity level than I expect. When you were asking your question, I was thinking about your psychological resistance to being in a group. But this reading gives a deeper perspective. It shows the value of accepting personal responsibility in the new civilization of Dreamscape." "Wow," Hannah said. "That's fascinating. Could you explain to me how the cards are saying that?" "Sure," Phred said. "For starters, the very first card is in the position that explains the question. It's the Death card." "Yikes!" Hannah exclaimed. "That looks awful." "Yes. It can be intimidating. But the Death card is not a sign of tragedy. Remember, in order for something new to be born, something old must die." "Does it mean someone is going to die?" "No. But even in physical death, the Tarot views death as a step on the neverending road of Life. This view is based on the ancient principle of reincarnation, in which the soul lives eternally, through life after life. So Death, whether of an attitude, a situation, or even of the body, is a transition; an end of one period, necessary to begin the next." "Well, what would you say is dying in this reading?" "The way I see it, this reading is about the birth of our civilization in Dreamscape. All of us, in one way or another, are here to flee the RealWorld, to find birth in a new world. In a sense, our life in Dreamscape represents the death of RealWorld." "I'd never thought about it that deeply before," Hannah said, her brow furrowed in concentration. "And what is that man doing in the silly costume, with a pack over his shoulder. Is he stepping off a cliff?" "That's the Fool card, in the position called 'the environment'. The Fool is starting a new adventure. He doesn't expect to be coming back, so he's packed all of his possessions. He is filled with optimism and hasn't yet envisioned the complexities, the obstacles, or the length of his journey. At the beginning of a grand adventure, we're all 'fools' in this sense. Later, after we've been on the journey we look back and ask, 'How did I ever have the courage to start?' But in hindsight we're often glad we were 'foolish' enough to press forward into the unknown." "And you think the big adventure in this reading is our new life in Dreamscape?" "Yes. You asked about why to join groups InWorld. This reading seems to be saying that there is more involved than meets the eye; that as you move into the adventure of the new world of Dreamscape you will grow and learn in ways that are far more rich and complex than any- thing you imagined when you began." After Hannah's expression changed from deep thought, back to recep- tiveness, Phred pointed to the group of cards on the right side of the reading. "The cards in these positions explain more about the ques- tion. Notice that two of the three cards indicate inner turmoil; the Seven of Ankhs and the Five of Swords. The meanings of the two cards reinforce each other to make a compelling image. Both cards represent two different aspects of the same frustration: the anger and anguish of being trapped in the self." Hannah looking astonished. "What do you mean 'trapped'?" "In RealWorld we are told that to be truly free we must rely on ourselves. Over time, our trust in others has drained away. Sharing with each other in a creative, trusting flow is almost impossible, because we are so brainwashed with the need for self reliance, and have become so afraid of trusting others. Instead of being able to fly freely through the skies together, we have each built a cage and are looking out of the bars. In RealWorld each of us is in isolation, prisoners of our self reliance. It's a trap." "Yes, I've noticed I can be more free InWorld. The way I am talking with you, for example, is much more frank and open than I would ordinarily talk to a person in RealWorld." "Hah! That's funny, " Phred said. "It's the same with me. I would never be this open, either. That self-trap out there in RealWorld makes it harder to be direct. Now let's look at the top group of cards, which talks about the outcome of the reading. In the position called 'the crown', is the four of Cups, in which a person is sitting with eyes closed, dreaming. In front of him there is a cup being offered, from a cloud. That is a gift of love being offered to the dreamer. The dreamer may or may not take the cup, depending on his readiness. In this case, I'd say that it is a very direct offer to you to accept the challenge of loving others InWorld." "I don't understand the significance of the three cups at the dreamer's feet, and then the one cup that is being offered," Hannah said with a puzzled look on her face. "This is a good example of how numbers are filled with meaning in the Tarot. The three cups show that the dreamer has been reaching within his own consciousness to build inner strength. Three is a number of harmony and balance. After achieving the inner harmony of the three, he is ready to move to the next level of balance. The fourth cup is a gift of even more inner love. But by accepting the cup, the dreamer will move from the balance of the three to the dynamic of the number four. Now the dreamer must grow. In this reading, I'd say that this represents a challenge to use the inner strength you've achieved within yourself and move beyond what is comfortable to what is possible." "You know. That sounds like an assignment, something I'm supposed to do for others. I had been thinking of this whole problem from my own point of view, what others were going to do for me. Interesting." she mused. After considering this for a moment, Hannah said, "I like the way the Tarot plays with the meaning of numbers." "Yes," Phred said. "Numbers are an interesting dimension of the Tarot." "But there are only ten numbered cards in each suit. How do you get all these meanings?" "Well," Phred laughed. "I'm fascinated by that myself. But numbers have more meaning than you realize. As the numbers go from one through nine, they spiral through three cycles of three, each representing a stage in the energy of the Suit. Then the tenth card pushes the energy over the top, as you prepare to move beyond the energy of the Suit." "I haven't quite grasped the other numbers yet, but I certainly see that the ace means a new beginning," Hannah observed. "And there are two aces side by side in this reading." "Yes," Phred said. "This reading is so amazing. The 'final outcome' is the Ace of Cups which indicates the beginning of a cycle of love, the outpouring of sharing in Dreamscape. And the Ace of Ankhs next to it indicates a new beginning at a higher level of spirit." "You know, Phred. I'm beginning to realize that my reluctance to join a group is based on fears that I learned in RealWorld. But those fears aren't appropriate here. Here in Dreamscape, the more I give and share, the better I feel. If I join a group whose mission is to give and share, how could I be losing anything? The possibilities are endless in this new world, and that's why I came to Dreamscape in the first place, looking for endless possibilities. This reading has helped me pick apart my feelings, and realize that if I'm going to take part in this new world, I ought to play by the new rules. Thanks! This Reading has helped me put a lot of things into perspective." {!} - A Fireside Chat - {!} By Werewolf Just off the top of my head, have you noticed how some avatars, once you get to know them well, turn out to have (had) bloody hard lives? That's one reason for going in: therapy. These avatars tend, unsur- prisingly to me, to be the most considerate and thoughtful of com- panions. Many have achieved a form of (non-religious) grace through their RW pain and I think Kymer continues their therapy. It's diffi- cult in RW to build such rapid and committed relationships, but I think most people WOULD if their RW social environment wasn't so awkward. Kymer, with its intensely personal forms of expression (people poised at their RW keyboards, often in solitary environments), may well diminish the ability of the super-ego to bully the ego and id into submission. There's also the regression aspect of it. Verbal harass- ment aside, there is little chance of any personal endangerment, and I often think of Kymer as a giant schoolyard where all can expose their childish inner selves and either re-enact or compensate for positive and negative childhood experiences. Some would claim to find this laughable, no doubt, but then they're IN here and that is self-evident proof. The chatter of the avatars vividly recalls, for me, the sound of the schoolyard, especially the arguments where avatars practice their RUDE WORDS (gawwsh) :-). Then there is wish fulfillment, the people who love role-playing. The verbal and physical cues we take for granted are missing and people can find a unique and often healing self-expression without betraying themselves, even the thieves, I suspect. The (almost) non-visual communications in Kymer make for a fascinating study. The only physical expressions we really have are emphatic, they focus sharply on extremes of expression. I tend to ignore these displays - although I indulge in them myself as a peer reflex :-) - and I pay a great deal of attention to the words on the screen and divine as much meaning as possible from them. That's easy meat for me, I do it in RW to a disturbing extent. But the by-product of this is that the more self-aware avatars begin to read as much as they can from a sentence and frame their own communications to project as clearly as possible their intent and, by extension, their identity. Of course, there are also those who just carry on here as they do in the RW, prattling on without a care in the world. I meet LOTS of those :-). The role-playing also covers the darker avatars, of course. I know that some people maintain the philosophy that you can't have light without shadow, but that it just so anodyne (god, I'll get flamed by a few people). There ISN'T a NEED for the vainglorious types in here, they're just an analogue of the RW, they appear despite our best wishes. I defy anyone to say that, having been robbed or abused, they honestly felt better for the experience. Chastened and wiser, perhaps, but not BETTER. Kefka's contention that no-one in Kymer can be stolen from is utter bilge. If the thief stopped to think of the emotional attachment that people put on their treasures, if s/he possessed empathy, s/he wouldn't steal. To call things "just pixels" is wilful blindness. The thieves need others like themselves to interact with, they are seeking mirrors in which to view their own actions and para-egos (cripes, long time since that phrase appeared in print). These avatars they feel are like themselves are "just pixels", so why do they court their attention and form emotional alliances with them? If Kymer only had one thief whom everyone learned to ignore, chances are we'd soon have no thief pretty rapidly. Is it normal to spend many, many hours online each day, each week, each month? Cripes, tell me what IS normal? Who set the definition and produced the template for NORMAL? I truly do thank the gods that some of these people have some means of communication at all. Kymer is the classroom in which a number of socially awkward people can learn to interact. Maybe some of them never graduate into the heights of RW relationships, but at least they find some relief and comity in here. I suspect that many a manic depressive or potential suicide has found some form of vindication and an ounce of self-worth in here. I've never felt ashamed of - or sorry for - anything I've posted in the forum, but I do often wish that the people I've gone up against had expressed themselves via personalities I could have actually connected with in a more positive way. However, I acknowledge that there are just some people you just know will never get on your friends list unless they are willing to meet half-way. Even with an ego like mine, I've been known to try :-) It is a sad man indeed who has to heap approbation on others for seeking to touch another human being's soul, however lightly or briefly :-). On a personal level, there have been engagements and weddings in here between people who have spent nary a moment in each other's physical presence but, speaking from personal experience, I know it's because we so seldom get to divine another person's soul so vividly. My Kymer friends know I'm a mouth on legs at times (pauses to look over shoulder for Tonya), but they can also shut me up pretty rapidly too. I mean, Jaeger hits my funny bone so often and so quickly with his putdowns and that is so RARE in RW, it engenders instant affection. Some of the best times I have ever had in Kymer were with people like Spar, Aisha and Tonya & her extended family, who just steamroller me every time I open my mouth :-). Even people I seldom meet in Kymer itself, like Brynne (hiya) and Menolly (alright, chuck), take the time to drop me a line. You know, I thought the novelty of Kymer might wear off after a while, as some friendships do in RW - and it damn near did at one point, I admit - but the sessions I have had with these people, and many others, are like water in the desert to me and, yes, I DO have a life in RW, dear friends :-). It was painful getting to be me, but I wouldn't trade an instant of it :-). Part of its worth for me is that many of my RW friends, of a similar age to me (35+) are busy with concerns such as their families and their work, some of which tires me because these aren't interests of mine ... who wants kids and a career ... . These are some of the RW concerns of my Kymer friends, too, but the essential difference is that the winnowing process in Kymer is fast and soulmates stand out. If you don't click with someone in Kymer, you can avoid them far more readily in Kymer than in RW (i.e. I'm sorry, I have to go urinate on my neighbour's lawn now, BRB, honest ... zooooooommm). In Kymer, the people I stick with are the best of those I've met and their RW interests are presented by them with a wit and charm I love. Also, the Kymer friends that have tend to be people of a similar character and so you get on with them, too, when you meet them. I recently met Bionic Woman for the first time and, because she hangs out with a very dear friend of mine with a particular humour, I was not surprised to find myself warming to her quickly. We also met Cola, who spent precious time with us because we had the same humour - and, of course, because they like to beat up on poor Werewolf :-). So, the difference between 23 minutes and several hours is obvious. Kefka, gods bless him, has molded for himself a world where all he can achieve can be achieved in 23 minutes. Those others are still defining their worlds, hour upon hour, day upon day, week upon week :-). This show has been sponsored by Werewolf's Fireside Chats Inc. Tapes are available from all good retailers or by post from Worlds Aweigh, a subsidiary of MarvL Productions Pty. Getting To Know Herbs ------------------------------- If you want to do magic with herbs, they need to be studied very carefully in their own realm, and that is the realm of the physical. This means that you must observe them, gather information about them and experiment with them. If you feel attracted to herbs and want to use them as primary tools you will need patience, time and dedication. Once you have decided on the herbs you are interested in for the moment, you must carefully study their properties and medicinal uses in your herbal. Our foremothers were born with this knowledge passed on to them through generations - they knew instinctively which herb to drink, which to apply on wounds - but we have lost this knowledge and studying the herb is part of the process of recalling it. Some herbs might be dangerous used in the wrong way - and you would not want to learn by experience. Use your intuition and experiment. For example, if you feel that witch hazel is the herb of seduction - and consulting your herbal you see that there is nothing against using it in contact with the skin - throw it in the bath and visualize yourself being irresistible in the particular occasion you are preparing yourself for. As usual it is most important that you concentrate and put your whole intensity behind it. Probably while you are in the bath you will also have an intuition of what to wear to enhance your seductiveness, what make-up to use, what part of yourself to emphasize. If the herb is not working, if it is really totally the wrong one, you will already feel it when you are still in the bath - you will be put off and irritable. You will miss that rush of energy which comes from vibrating in tune with the universe, the feeling which tells you that the magic is working. Put it down to experience and try again. You will not err much. If you have chosen herbs, they have chosen you - and your intuition will guide you safely. Garlic -------- Garlic is a hardy perennial with long, flattened, solid leaves. The bulb, the part most used, is composed of several smaller sections known as "cloves." The whole bulb is covered with a membranous skin. Garlic has been used throughout history as a medicinal and a food and has been credited with almost magical properties in curing disease. It is used in magic in numerous ways, and it has been a religious offering since Egyptian times. Garlic is the exemplar of plants in its astrological response. It is very strongly aligned with Mars in Aries, and is used as an offering to the warrior deities in most pantheons. It is also used to remove the evil eye, and to take aggressive action against enemies. To keep money in the house, burn the skin covering the garlic cloves in the kitchen fire. Or burn it on a charcoal if you have an electric stove. Dried ground garlic is often used in incense to remove heavy thoughtforms, negative entities and thoughts of depression. A blend of dried and powdered garlic and onion powders is effective for these purposes, but the area should then be infused with a lighter incense, such as frankincense, to neutralize the heavy Mars influence of the garlic and onion mixture. Garlic and brown sugar mixed with benzoin in equal quantities is a useful incense for purifying and cleansing the inside of a building. It is especially effective in the rooms of someone who lives in a state of depression. It lightens the living quarters considerably. Garlic can also be used in baths for personal protection. Boil nine cloves of garlic in an iron (or stainless steel) pot with about a quart of water. Boil for about twenty minutes, allow the solution to cool to room temperature. Take a regular cleansing bath, with soap and water, then pour the garlic solution over your head. Allow the solution to run out the bath drain while praying that evil be washed off. This bath is effective against most negative influences, and is very good against the physical debilitation brought on by the evil eye or consistent negativity from others. Three garlic cloves in a red charm bag is considered to be a very useful charm against the evil eye. Garlic is also the traditional protection against vampires (LOL). Garlic has so many uses in folk healing that there have been several books written on the subject. Crushed garlic is occasionally rubbed on the feet to reduce a fever. There is also a prayer to Saint Ajo for healing - an indication of how powerful garlic is thought to be in medicine. Ginger --------- It is the root of the ginger plant that we know as ginger and this is the part used - either whole, fresh, dried or powdered. Ginger has been used as a culinary spice since 550 B.C., and is particularly prevalent in Chinese cooking. This herb related to Mars, but it is the active Mars, and is quite different from the Mars in Aries vibration of garlic. Ginger is used as a catalyst, promoting a rapid change in conditions. If you add small quantities of ginger to any incense, it will enhance the effects of the incense and make it work more quickly. Elementally, ginger is the "fire of air." It is used in spells of all kinds to assist them being brought to fruition more quickly. Take care that whenever ginger is used in a spell, it is the smallest of the components of the spell. If too much ginger is used, it will overwhelm the other components, making the spell a waste of effort. Horse Chestnut ---------------------- The horse chestnut has an unusual property. It has the virtue of being able to absorb physical pain from those who carry it or apply it to themselves. It is very useful for people who suffer from arthritis or bursitis, and it is carried in purse or pocket to gain some relief. The nut should be prayed over in the name of the person before it is given to him or her. A bowl of nuts, say three or four nuts in a small bowl, may be kept in the sickroom of a person who is in pain. The nuts should be prayed over in the name of the person, and then washed off in cool water every day to increase their ability to accept the pain. Once a nut used for this purpose becomes damaged - its skin cracks, for example - it should be discarded. It has done its work, and needs to be replaced. Mint (Spearmint) ---------------------- Mint has a quality which stimulates. It may be used to "spice up" charms to make them work faster, or to turn your mentality so you can be in accord with the effect desired from your charm. As a spray or sprinkle it puts a mentally stimulating vibration throughout the place where it is applied. It would be ideal for a school, but it is also useful in an office or a house that is for sale. Mint may be used as a floor wash in a business place, to stimulate business activity. Honeysuckle and cinnamon do better here though. If you rinse your hair with mint it will often remove minor mental dullness. Wash your hair and rinse it with a mint tea, made of a teaspoon of dried mint leaf to a cup of boiling water. Allow the water and mint to come to room temperature before you apply it to your head. When rinsing, scrub the scalp thoroughly. This is a first aid treatment for minor forms of malochia. Mugwort ------------ Mugwort is one of those plants which is usually considered to be a weed. Since ancient times it has been considered a bringer of prophecy through dreams. As an incense it is believed to assist people in trance or when they are asleep to "dream true." For dreams you burn it as an incense in your bedroom before retiring, or you can make a mugwort "dream pillow," the more usual method of using the herb. A mugwort "dream pillow" is made by filling a pillow case with mugwort leaves. You should sleep alone when you use it, and remember to have a pencil and paper at your bedside to write down dreams that may come along. Orrisroot ------------- Orrisroot (also known as Queen Elizabeth root) is the root of the garden Iris. It is a well known love charm, and is often carried by people who wish to draw love to themselves. It can be used in powder form to draw others to yourself. In this case it can be added to talcum powder as a dusting powder. Add a tablespoon of orris root powder to a cup of talcum powder; pray over it for the effect you desire. It can be used to draw others for business purposes or for romance. The powder of the root relates to the planetary influence of Mercury, through the greek goddess Iris, a messenger of the gods. Orrisroot is a useful ingredient in any spell where communications or the opening of communications is desired. For this purpose it is added to charm bags or baths. Occasionally orrisroot is used as a condiment in Europe. As such, it has the reputation of producing love between those who partake in the meal. Blessed * Be {!} - TG'S Hatemail No.7 - {!} TG's Letterbox by Throbbing Gristle HMS Sorry sorry sorry! As a lot of things went wrong for me this last week, this article doesn't feature much this time. I was very short on time the last week, and this hurts for I really needed it. Seems like I threw a match on a dry heap of straw last week, and this heap of Straw calls itself Empire. I regret I have to wait a little 'til I can solve and manage this in a way that I regard as acceptable. So I can only show some reactions this week; I'm sure there is much more to come. Having downloaded "The Imperial" from the community forum really did not give me a better regard than I had before. All this order of precedence exposed there. I advertise it herewith! Take a look at it and make your own decisions. I nearly could have seen it as funny, but more I think it's somehow sick. (No Adrian, not you or your paper! The structures of the EMP are meant!) What is the sense in this? Is it really fun to build up such a system and/or take part in it? Oh ... and we need more members, we "recruit" them. Ouch...ouch...ouch.... I got an open letter about this which I put into my article in Deutsche ESP! this week. Here's the translated version of this letter: Open letter and resignation-application to the Empire ----------------------------------------------------- (This letter has been translated from German and edited for clarity - Dread.) Hello Empire, Or rather Hello all news-reading inhabitants of WA, 'cause this script became an open letter after a deeper consideration, and will be published in both ESP!'s as it contains some stuff for discussing, which could think over 'Non-Empiralists', too, if they enjoy, and it would be a shame if it wastes its existence in a lonesome drawer of a harddisk or the basket of Win95. This is no hate-mail, rather a think-mail . Well, I don't really know, shall I feel honoured, or like a poor water-drop, just sucked up by a greedy sponge. The motives for my resignation are none, because I never 100%ly asked to be a member of the empire (sorry, if that wasn't clear in my previous letter, it shall be shortly described here). 1. Two weeks ago I sent the Imperator an email-inquiry, in which I demonstrated my interest for the Empire, and tried to clarify some doubts. I wanted to be sure before joining. Instead of a reply, ten days later I received the request to register in the Internet-Phone book of the empire, which amazed me. I found myself at place one of the Count-list in the new Imperial. 2. Did you (all members of the empire, especially the leaders) think about the fact, that a part of the crime in WA has its origin indirect in yourself? You actually seem to be the biggest organisation inside WA, and in my opinion you make too big a sensation of that whole crime-story. That uncertainty of newbies and the massive publications concerning that subject surely cause a proper part of all 'bad' actions, except sexual harassment and such campaigns. Like in RW you get up some peoples noses (police, government, salvation army in RW) with your guarding and warning presence, and who react by trying to form a healthy (if that expression proves right, be left undecided) contrast. Where exists the B.N.D., there will be R.A.F., this is, how it is. I don't like it, too, when people are being stiffed or otherwise treated by words and/or deeds. One should enquire at CompuServe, if it would be possible to handle such cases directly, let's say, when occurs several, massive treatment of individuals or the community through individuals to induce an exclusion out of WA, if there's no sign of improvement, inside the forums this is practised similar, I think. Then you could pay attention again to the more pleasant things of the virtual world, or is it such a big fun playing binary police? 3. The (Non-)Sense and dangers of an organisation like the empire generally. Could anyone of you give me the guarantee that the empire doesn't lose control sometimes, gets corrupted, or loses itself in increasing administration-efforts? Nope, would only be possible with a constitution, free elections to occupy the serious positions, resp.. But, to be honest, what's the point ? We have to bear politics and bureaucracy in the RW. I think a lot of other avatars don't want to explore mundane things here at Phantasus. It's better that groups like the Coolytes or Hispaniclytes handle things in an easier way and increase the wealth of the community. Okay, I concede that partly sounds like paintin' it black. I won't condemn the empire because of how it appears at the moment, no, you invented some rational things too (the relief fund for victims of crimes'n'crashes), but you should consider your actions in WA and the consequences of them, and think up other ways for crime-fighting. How about the role-playing-game to be created? Another point, that gives me doubts about your motto *a community to serve the community*. Only members of the Empire can participate -- isn't that a bit egotistical? Why exclude all the other avatars, that prefer to wander the streets of Phantasus independent under a simple name? Imagine, you could allow the theft of items left lying around, or initiate real theft competitions. Perhaps such possibilities would prevent the notorious thieves from the activities in Kymer and reduce crime in a productive way without harming neither the good nor the evil, and actually serve the WHOLE community. If you continue as you are, I fear for the decline of your organisation, because you will not be able to differentiate between those who really are interested in you and your motives, and those who only joined to have a title or take part in one of your internal activities. You will be like a burst balloon, what remains after it's burst? just a few pieces of rubber. I will submit this letter to both ESP!'s. A big organisations like yours needs criticism, and I hope, you understand that. I feel neutral to the empire, and see myself more in the role of an observer, and with tension I will follow the further lapse of 'social evolution' in Kymer, although I will retire as an avatar because my brother better integrated into WA, and my wife now became curious visiting WA too (probably a new member, hehehe). Well, enough of the words, this is not a condemnation but rather a reminder . I'm just a bit more than two weeks in WA, therefore a newbie, and perhaps what I have said is without a basis or just wrong, but these are my first impressions, and I wanted to describe them , to perhaps serve the community with this open letter. I wish for you, that my premonitions are absolutely groundless, and you shall serve the wealth of the community forever, without deviating from the way of virtue, however please be a bit more sensible with the contact to the other inhabitants (the good as the evil). IND H Morgenthaler (Human INDividual Der Morgenthaler) CompuServe: 100106,132 ---------------------------------------- Another letter I got disappeared in a strange way inside my letterbox. It was another example of a newbie being threatened with prejudice. Sorry it will have to wait until next week, I hope I'll receive a copy from the author. I also got a letter from a real king in WA. His royalty feels like he has felt being attacked as a person. And it seems like he did not read my article very carefully. I try to be fair, so here it is: (Btw I did not edit it in any way. The writing all over without pauses in between is just as I received it.) ---------------------------- Letter received: Well it seems that your "friends" at ESP and you yourself continue to slander me and what I do. What so far have I done to you? Think. Just think. That's right nothing. I have not said one bad word about you. Nor have I published anything about you in my paper. Nor have I made a generalization about theives. I just warn. I never said. Oh everyone look out for the thieves they all wear black. Seem like to me that you have pity for the thieves. And also if I was doing a bad job my paper wouldn't be in the German WA forum now would it? Nor would I be thanked by many newbies and others alike. Sure I made mistakes in the past. Haven't you? If you never have then your not human. To be human is to error. I apologized for my mistakes and made the wrong right. And if you feel like publishing this fine go right ahead. And never once did I say that I spoke for the EMPIRE. And yes I feel that way about the Acolytes. Not all of the mind you but some. And I have many people that are behind be but are afraid to speak out. Some Acolytes suck. I mean really suck. Have you ever been in WA and tried to page an Acolyrte and find one wasn't there? And a few mins. later you see one walk past you. You ask to help but all they say is and I quote " I'm not the Acolyte on duty page if you need one." Duh dumb a@@ I just did that and there isn't one avalible. Think. Acolytes suppose to help not shrug off the problem to the Acolyte on duty. You can't place the problems of the world on one avatar. So I would appreciate it if you don't slander me or my paper ever again. If so fine be that way. I will then become the menece you claim me to be. And I will put you and others in my paper and slander you. I doubt you would like that at all. Mind you everyone wants to know who to look out for in WA. I found this problem and was asked by many avatars in WA to start this. When I start something I plan to finish it. So I may sound rude terrible or even dumb to you. All I ask is that you stop. Please stop. And if you beleive I'm so bad then I will ask you to contact the many avatars that support me. Ranging from normal avatars , Acolytes , and even a Oracle or two. EMP King Adrian Z. GoldenChild END OF LETTER=== Well, here we are now. Looking at my article in last week's ESP!, I do not see a single line where I mentioned the name of Adrian Z as a person. Why does he direct it to his own person then? Is Adrian Z= The Empire? If so, he is right with this. Reading a publication like T&T, where the word "EMP" appears at the beginning gives me the impression that this is an official organ of that organization, not the escapade of a single person. I did not claim to speak for the ESP! as a newspaper. There is nobody here who's gonna forbid my opinion, I write for my own. That's the freedom I am looking for. Will this be possible in the Imperial too? There was no word in my writing, where the "warning about the thieves in black" was related to Thief & Theft even. T&T is just one part of many that support prejudice against certain outfits or lifestyles, and such reactions, like those of the sunray that I described. Oh no, I do not feel pity for the thieves of Kymer, and I do not feel pity for those who claim to judge them. Everyone inworld has the chance to protect himself, and if he doesn't, it's his own fault. The "better" thieves are doing their own roleplay in WA, just like I do with my different avatars. But I truly confess that I found talking with or reading messages from people like Kefka or HHC much more entertaining and interesting, for their words carried humor and intelligence, than listening to automated macroplayers giving me good advice. T&T is nothing more than a list of people supposed to be avoided by others. So is the Imperial now, and this is a smack in my eyes. It's the content that I critisize, not the maker himself. I really wonder about the word "slander" four different times in Adrian's letter, as this is exactly the word that I have would have chosen for T&T last week. To be honest, I don't know what this is all meant to be. I demand being left in peace for myself inworld, and this peace was disturbed by different actions of different EMP members again and again. Maybe there are people who lack the ability to walk through Kymer without all this advice. Maybe there are also people who really like to be questioned by a moral force about some happenings inworld. For myself, I think I have better and more interesting things to do. If I ever had had problems with an acolyte, I would have chosen the way to the next higher instance. Of course, I would also have chosen the way through this newspaper, but this would really be against a single person then, and not against "the acolytes". The Empire as an organisation seems more than suspicious to me. All your reactions that I receive by this time, show me that I am right. What's the reason for a military pseudo-organised army in Kymer? Sorry Adrian, TG will never be quiet; if she did, she wouldn't be TG anymore. But: I am looking for reports and facts; this is something that I base my writing upon. It will surely not be a pre-announced revenge-slander, as you announce it in the end of your letter. I surely could go writing any nonsense I would like to, but I won't. I will only tell things that I can prove, and that are sent and reported to me in a way that is believable to me. And that's what I will do. Now and in the future. So ... if you think that slandering would be an adequate answer to this ... it's up to you. I don't mind anyone writing against me, it's your right as much as I take the same for me, but there should be facts behind the writing, not personal emotions only. An additional info reached me from Zooey. He told me that he and Drummer left the EMP, they were the next-highest members in their list. Reasons: too many fanatics in the group, people who only are there for carrying the titles, not enough organisation through too fast growth. He adds that there are also some positive aims inside the group, that caused him to help build it up. Well...eh... I hope so. In this sense... until next week. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Kymer-conomics ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - Introducing Kymer-conomics! - {!} by Mufasa, Financial Editor Since publication began, ESP! readers have asked for a column that would enable avatars to track the ups and downs of the ever-volatile Kymer economy. Some auction houses have published the results of their sales, but store owners, street traders, collectors, and Kymer con- sumers have all expressed the need for information about commonly- traded items, as well as those special rarities that are sometimes privately traded, but rarely publicly auctioned. Beginning July 7, Kymer-conomics will provide: 1. Weekly, a Common Collectibles Guide to items that frequently appear on the auction block, such as candy, ornaments, teddies, heads, ferns, and flowers. The table will include: original vendo price, if applicable; last month's average price; this month's high, this month's low, average price this month to date, and the percentage of variance between this month's average price and the previous month's average price, and the cumulative number sold at auction during the previous week. The column will include data not only from regularly-scheduled auctions, but from auctions which occur infrequently, or which are one-time events. 2. Weekly, a list of auctions which occur less frequently than bi-weekly and auctions which are single events, including dates, times, venues, and contact information for placing items on consignment. 3. Monthly, an Auction Guide including dates, times, and venues of weekly or bi-weekly auctions, and contact information for placing items on consignment. 4. Monthly, a Retail Guide of privately-owned stores including days and hours of operation, venue, and the name and UID of the proprietor or managing partner. Periodically, a featured Retailer will be highlighted, with emphasis upon retailers who specialize in one or two lines of goods. 5. Monthly, an Extreme Rarities Guide, including not only auction prices, but all obtainable information about private sales or trades of items of which at least 2 but less than 12 are known to exist. 6. Monthly, along with the Extreme Rarities price guide, I could provide a brief analysis of the overall direction of the economy, along with accompanying charts or graphs. 7. Periodically, a Rumor Report, detailing the most intriguing rumors circulating through Kymer about item availability, new items to be introduced, and anything and everything that may titillate the trader and captivate the consumer. Coming next week: The Baseline Guide, containing all available auction and store dates for the month of June. Save that guide for future reference, as you assiduously stalk July's bargains and delightful rarities throughout the Dreamscape. Because some auctions are scheduled at conflicting times, it is not possible to personally attend each regularly-scheduled event. Auctioneers, please send your auction information to Kymer-conomics Central at UID 104453,2565. Store owners, we want to include your shop in our Retail Guide. Proprietors and general partners, please send Kymer-conomics Central your hours and days of operation and the name of your store. If you would like to be a featured Retailer, please include this information, as well as when a visit would be most convenient for you. Traders, we want to hear your war stories. The good deals, the bad deals, the fun deals, and the deals that almost but didn't quite go through are all part of Kymer-conomics. If you wish, assurances of your anonymity will be provided. Readers, send an Email to Kymer-conomics Central at UID 104453,2565 and let us know how we can serve you best. ESP! and this column are for you. We began the evening with 23 people ready to play. Well, creating questions that all had the word "Father" in either the question or the answer turned out to be interesting -- a bit too "interesting" for most people, who simply gave up when they had a zero score at halftime. And then the program crashed ... and ... well, to keep it short, after several boo-boos, we *did* succeed in establishing the three winners. Meridienne came in first and choose the Rosehead painted with Rare White. Duckolyte Purple Martin came in a very close second, and choose the flowers Cosmocat came in third and won the valentine. On Monday Night, we were back to our usual "General Knowledge" trivia, and I had a bit of fun writing the questions. Those who were there aren't likely to forget "Rudyard Kipling" is a British author. Until I got them all (almost) by throwing in A.A. Milne. And of course, there was the question that contained its own answer (which only two people noticed). Like I said, a playful spirit was mine on Monday. We had 17 people present at the height of the game, though one was evicted for not following rules, and another had to leave at half time. (I gave him a door prize anyway -- too bad, he might have been a contender). This was the first game where I finally started to get it the way I want it ... NO ONE had a score of zero! And half hit right on my target average of 9-10 correct answers. Duckolyte Chris Brown won first with 15 points, and chose a Mystery Heart Chest, containing a regular "woman's head*" with the hair and eyes painted rare green, and rare green body paint. Sunray Sir Launce (tied at 13 points) came in second - by milliseconds - in the playoff for 2nd place, but he decided to be chivalrous and let Julianna take her pick first. Launce ended up with the fern. Julianna came in third, and chose the valentine. Tuesday Disaster struck ... though, in retrospect, it's rather funny. Wert updated Tchallenge for me, and I was the first to try it (well, ok, so I'm the only host actually using it regularly). Anyhow, the program engine decided it only liked people with names beginning with the letter "S" and EACH of them got added as a player 100 times! No matter what I did, I couldn't register anyone who didn't have that all important first letter. ***** NOTICE BOUNTY HUNTERS ARE OUT!!! ****** WERT: I *AM* GOING TO MOUNT YOUR HEAD ON MY WALL!!! Growl! I'll have you know I have CERTAIN PEOPLE out hunting you, and ONE of them will manage to get your head! I've hired "bounty hunters" so beware! (And the ones I've actually "hired", the people who played and left before any of the goodies were passed out, will win a very rare item --- *when* they bring me Wert's Head! Growl! And if any of you have *not* gotten the email giving you the password with which to *tag* Wert and get the head, please email me at 74742,2146 -- I did not have addresses for all of you. But the "hunt" will not begin until I've heard from you. Yes, Wert *does* know who is in the hunt, and what the password is to hand over his head. <<>>>) **** WERT: you have been warned!!!! **** By Wednesday morning Wert had the program repaired, but I didn't practice with it (I'm hanging MY head on the wall, too ) and I kept crashing as a result of my own ignorance; still, we had 29 players, and the game was on! It was the highest scoring game ever (I just may have to get tough on y'all ) but we did hand out two "booby prizes" for the *lowest scorers* who stayed throughout the game (besides having them on the floor for the second half). I won't name names, but one person got a fern, while the other got (the now infamous) hot chocolate. The winners were: Golden Warrior, who made a big dash in the second half, jumping from 3 points to an all time high of 17! Duckolyte Chris Brown and 502, Duckolyte Wing came in tied for second. In a hotly contested play off, Chris walked off with second place. There were also 4 "spontaneous" games played. And I have learned two things: I will not bother to attempt *any* more very late night, or very early morning games (WAT) since those times never draw enough of a crowd to justify giving out rare prizes. See you at the Madhouse! {!} - Introducing The Star Wars Showdown! - {!} By SunRay Mage Darien-GK Hello Kymerians and fellow Star Wars fans! I would like to introduce you to a new game show! It's "The Star Wars Showdown!" The trivia, the trickery, and the triumphs are words you will hear often while playing Star Wars Showdown! This game is modeled after the TV game show "The Price is Right." You bid on a item, if you are closest without going over, you get a chance to win a rare prize such as ferns, heads, and paints. But before you can get your hands on your prize, you have to get three (3) out of five (5) questions right. If you succeed in that task then you will be sent to the "Trilogy Triumph" floor. This is where you can win the grand prize. On the floor you will a face-off against the other winners. You will have one (1) minute to answer 5 questions before the other winners do. I hope you fans of the Star Wars Trilogy will come out and try to clean out the house! Hope to see you there! The first game is scheduled for Saturday, June 29 at 8:00 PM WAT. There will be 5 rounds in one game. Grand Admiral Darien *Each prize is rare, if the game is popular than the game will get special prizes such as engraved items and very rare heads. *This game is sponsored by Acolyte Milen and SunRay Mage Darien-GK *Each question will be from the movies itself not the books, or audio cassettes. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Para mas detalles vean el anuncio, que esta publicado en este periodico. NO falten! Esta semana les traigo un chiste de Alvarez Guedes: Nosotros, los de Hispanoamerica Dos de las cosas que mas facilitan el triunfo en la vida, son el nombre y la nacionalidad. No es lo mismo llamarse Christopher Hamilton y haber nacido en Londres, que ser Pedro Fernandez, natural de Tegucigalpa. Si Ingmar Bergman, en lugar de nacer en Suecia, nace en Bolivia, y se llama Jesus Lopez, todavia no hubiera dirigido una pelicula, y si lo hubiera hecho y la trama hubiese girado alrededor de dos lesbianas y un homosexual, no hubiera podido exhibirla nunca. Los criticos hubieran dicho mas o menos esto: "Anoche asistimos al estreno de CONFESIONES, una pelicula pornografica, dirigida por un tal Lopez, y poco nos falto para vomitar en el cine. Los lectores tienen que excusarnos por no hacer una critica de la misma. Nos limitamos a recomendarles que no la vean. Nuesttro cine no progresa porque esta en manos de gente inescrupulosa, incapacitada y pervertida". Desde luego, nadie se atreveria a decir eso de Bergman o de una pelicula de el. Porque Bergman es sueco, y no es de apellido Lopez. Y el que se atreviera a hacerlo, caeria en desgracia. Seria un inculto, un incapacitado, un absoluto desconocedor del verdadero cinde de arte. A mi personalmente, las peliculas de Bergman, me parecen mas aburridas qu el &*%$@#. Y creo que triunfo, porque ademas de llamarse Bergman y haber nacido en Suecia, incorporo la pornografia al cine en una epoca en que nadie se atrevia a hacerlo. Los "enfermitos" podian ver los filmes del sueco sin que los criticaran, porque eran peliculas clasificadas como "de arte". Y no habia nada de malo en eso. Habia que ser culto para comprenderlas. Si el realizador llega a ser Hispano, "unicamente la gente chusma las hubiera visto". Asi somos con nosotros mismos. Tu estas a bordo de un avion, y el capitan es de apellido Brown o Shanon. No sientes la menor preocupacion. Pero si por casualidad oyes por los altavoces: "Muy buenos dias, senoras y senores, les saluda su capitan Cecilio Morales, para darles la bienvenida a bordo", dices bajito: "Ah, se @#$%% esto". Pero, por que, @#$%? Que diferencia hay entre un piloto americano y uno de los nuestros? No han recibido el mismo tipo de ensenanza, con los mismos libros y los mismos profesores? Donde esta la diferencia? Yo tengo un amigo puertorriqueno que es capitan de una compania de aviacion hispanoamericana. El se llama Francisco Rodriguez, pero cuando saluda a los pasajeros despues del despegue, lo hace en ingles. Dice "Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking, my name is Frank". Y claro, como el habla perfectamente el ingles, se @#$%^, se creen que es americano. En Miami, cuando en un hogar hispano, la mujer le dice al marido: "Aqui estuvo hoy un americano preguntando por ti", el piensa que deben estarlo buscando para algo importante. No se le ocurre que puede ser un vendedor de cepillos, o uno que quiere que le compren dos papeletas para una rifa en una escuela. Pero si por casualidad ella le dice: -Hoy por la manana vino a verte uno que esta interesado en hablar contigo. -No te dijo el nombre? -Si, pero no me acuerdo. -Hispano? -Si. -Pa'que *&^% me querra? No debe ser pa'na bueno. {!} - Respuestas/Answers - {!} 1) Riddle: And many in the street would stand were I not as a friend at hand. Our game hosts reported for duty one hour before the game, Brynne to lock the prize chests, and Passion to make a complete sweep of the Dreamscape with an intriguing macro she had prepared for the occasion. "Pinkie & the Brains" has been so popular that it has attracted Oracular attention. Just before the game began, Oracle Teresias stopped Pinkie at an elevator locale and inquired about becoming a celebrity guest! Watch future editions of ESP! for the announcement of the date set for his appearance. If you have ever wanted to find an Oracle, this will truly be your dream opportunity! "Pinkie & the Brains" is a game like hide and seek, played in five rounds. Before each round, a co-host or celebrity guest secretes him- or herself in some public locale in Kymer. After the co-host or celebrity guest has hidden, the remaining host gives the ghosted players a secret phrase containing a clue to the location of the hidden. The first seeker to find the hidden and say the secret phrase aloud wins the round. Winners of each round have the opportunity to compete in a monthly Grand Championship round, but the immediate reward is selecting one of the special locked prize chests, containing a secret surprise. As always, the efficient Pinkie started the game at 6:00 p.m. WAT, sharp, after having added a few more items to Chest #3, so that players would know that the secret surprises awarded for each round are special. The winner of each round of "Pinkie and the Brains" selects a locked prize chest, which is opened in view of all the players. Chest #3 contained a sack packed with a rose head, painted rare green, a rare pink body spray, and a piece of delectably rare Kymer pizza. The winner of every Wave selects one of the locked prize chests, which is opened by the host in view of all the gathered ghosts. Some of the prize chests contain rare items, and some contain current vendo merchandise, but every prize is worth several hundred tokens. Some of the rare items contained in the prize chests have a value of several thousand tokens. The winners of each Wave are also qualified to compete in one of the Championship Rounds for some rare and very special prizes. She would grow any thing that would grow. She loved them all, flowers, vegetable, fruits and trees. Everything she grew did wonderfully. The trees were lush and green, the fruits and vegetables were large and delicious and the flowers were wonderful beyond belief. Her favorites were the roses, though. She loved her roses. She lavished her love and care on them as if they were her children, and perhaps they were. She watered them and groomed them, fed them her special mix of plant foods, and they responded by growing tall and thick and healthy. When they bloomed, the large beautiful blossoms, of every conceivable colour , raised their faces towards the sun, as children raise their faces to the warmth and caring of their mother's face. They were her children. She loved them as such. When she came into the garden she looked to them first, and when she left, they were the last she looked upon. Each of them received her attention and love and each responded with beauty, their rich and delicate scents rising into the sun-warmed air. One day her attention was claimed by a particularly beautiful, golden yellow, rose. She loved all her rose children, growing there among the ferns, but this one was exceptionally large and beautiful. As a woman who loved both growing things and beauty, this golden yellow rose child of hers filled her heart to overflowing with love and joy. And, as often happens, that love and joy expressed itself as a tear. As she bent over the golden yellow face of the rose blossom, that single tear fell from her eye. It dropped onto the petals of that golden yellow rose. As chance would have it, at the very moment that the tear of the mother's love and joy landed on the rose petal a ray of sun struck both rose petal and tear drop. The mingling of rose petal, loving tear and golden sunray resulted in an incredible occurrence. The mingling of those three substances resulted in the creation of the little yellow unicorn, Moochas. The small golden yellow creature appeared where the rose and tear drop and sunray had performed their miraculous transformation. With a smile and a skip and a bound she hugged the woman and darted off into the world of Kymer. She bides there today, familiar to most, smiling and laughing, with her nature comprised of the beauty and sweetness of the rose, the love and joy of the mother's tear, and the warmth and happiness of the golden sunray. She travels through Kymer, helping and caring and smiling for any and all, loving everyone. {!} - Ode to a Bingo Addict - {!} By Sunray QTPie Am I too late, can I still bet? And that's a lucky sign...I know! {!} - The Myth of Pal Joey - {!} By Pal Joey-Kymer Guardian Many hundreds of years ago in the hills of Rome and around Mount Olympus there were many mythical creatures. The Minotaur, Pan, Centaurs, and the like. All half animal half man. There was one in particular that little if any has been written about. The Unicorn. The reason for this is that they were so rare, having been hunted out of existence for their much valued horn. The Horn of a Unicorn, as legend has it, possessed magical powers. Where Unicorns walked, flowers bloomed. Animals sprang from the brush to great the friendly Unicorns. They were loved by all creatures of the forest. Along with this attribute came good fortune and prosperity for all who lived near Unicorns. Hunters greedily sought them in a vain attempt to capture the essence of the Unicorn Horn, thinking it would make them rich. All they got for their effort was a hand full of dust after they removed it from a fallen Unicorn. As their numbers depleted, the countryside lost it's splendor. The Unicorns were not there anymore to enchant the countryside and the earth turned sour. These were the darkest days of Rome. A pair of Unicorns escaped the last hunt which the people launched to capture that last chance of prosperity. The rest of the breed was destroyed in this final assault. The two that escaped were named Palladia and Josephus. They made their way through Europe and eventually came to the coast of what is now known as France. Once there they secreted themselves aboard a boat which was wending it's way towards what is now known as England. The owner of the boat knew about the Uni's plight and offered to take them there in the hopes they would survive. The last two unicorns in the world. They arrived and ran for the hills to escape notice. They found themselves deep in the forests of this new country and made a home in a cave. At last the hunt was over. Only the nightmares remained. Their friends that had perished. At night they would sometimes wail at the thought. Many months passed and as things would happen, Palladia was with child. They were so happy when they had the baby but also knew he would be the last Unicorn. At least, they thought, there would be a few more years for their kind. They decided to name him after themselves and they called him Pal Joey. In honor of his father and mother and knowing he would be a friend to all. Joey grew as the years passed. Unicorns grow fast and strong but live for many hundreds of years. He ran through the hills of England down through the valleys across lakes and rivers. He ran so fast that neither Palladia nor Josephus could keep up with him. He would call from the next hill with a crazy dog like noise "WOOOF". A noise he equated with having done something impressive or when something impressed him. The parents never did figure where he got that from and just accepted it. One day when Joey was running through the hills he heard a strange noise coming from the area where home was. The cave. He ran as fast as he could only to get there just in time to see men with nets chasing after Palladia and Josephus who were running up a hill towards a cliff. the hunters had discovered them again. Too late for the couple, Joey could only watch from a distance as the two held hands and leaped to their death on the rocks below rather than be taken captive. Joey was devastated as the hunters made their way to the bottom to the shattered remains of his parents and removed the horns which promptly turned to dust. He wept through the long night. They had been so happy. The farmlands in the distance were so prosperous and now they were dead. The flowers along the trails died. The animals went deeper into the forests. Joey went further north to escape civilization. One day in his wanderings, he came upon a boat at the shore. The man who owned the boat was trapped under it as the tide was rising. He had been trapped when a wave had surged and rode the boat on top of his leg. He would surely die when the tide came in. Joey went down to the boat and the fisherman said "My word, I thought I saw the last of you." Joey said what? Then the fisherman told him the story of bringing his parents here. Joey quickly grabbed the bow of the boat and pushed as hard as he could. the boat heaved up and slid off into the water to rest in the surf. The fisherman was free. Fortunately his leg was undamaged, having been trapped only in the sand. They began to talk and the fisherman related all the details of the trip he made with the parents. It was then that Joey told him what had happened. The man was crushed. He said, I will solve this once and for all. I will take you where nobody will find you. An island I know of where animals run free, where orchids grow, where ferns are everywhere. There are people there but they will not harm you. They are starting a colony on this Island called Kymer. At that, Joey picked the fisherman up and put him in the boat. He pushed it off shore and they set sail together. The fisherman was getting old and wanted to settle down anyway so this was by mutual agreement. He said he had taken many people there in the past who were looking for a new life. People who were sick of the crime and evil nature of the people of this continent. The name of his boat was Argo. They landed after sailing many days. They stepped off on an old dock covered with a tarpaulin. There were some dirt trails leading off in a few directions. To the left, a general store of sorts. Goods brought to the little town from farmers in the hills. To the right, a place where people met to have festive activities. The people waved at Joey and stared at him. They all rushed over to see this new creature who came to their town. Joey backed up in fear at first but then sensed they meant no harm. Throughout the following days, Joey related the legend of the Unicorns and told them all that had happened. They kindly offered him anything he wanted food and drink. Joey was finally at peace. Over the next few years, the fisherman had passed and it was agreed upon to build a new Argo and bring others here in his memory. This would continue the fisherman's tradition of picking good but desperate people to fill the streets here in Kymer. Joey laid the keel for the boat which was huge by comparison to the old one. As fate would determine it, a thief was brought ashore one day. Joey had made many friends in Kymer and the people gathered to hear his story telling. One day, one of the people put his sack full of food down. The thief ran through the crowd and grabbed it. He ran as fast as he could for the hills. Not wanting to earn his way, he stole instead. Joey ran after him and before long caught him. He grabbed the sack from his hand and dragged the thief down to the village. The people decided to banish him from the island. This was a mistake. After they returned him to the mainland, this thief gathered his friends and formed a band which would attack the island. What nobody had known was that this thief had been a sailor and he knew how to get to the island. They struck at dawn running through the town stealing things and taking off for the hills. Joey did what he could but he was only one and they were many. An idea came to him. He new the enchantment of the horn but did not know it's powers until it came to him in a dream. He could change people into Unicorns if they wished. They would have the ability to change back and forth anytime they wanted. He called a meeting in the town square and told everyone about his ability. All who volunteered to help would gain the incredible speed of the Unicorn. He had a few volunteers at first but then more and more joined the group. They became the Golden Knights of Kymer. Joey picked this name from an old legendary group on the mainland who used to defend the people in the villages against invaders. So Pal Joey and the Golden Knights went on to defend Kymer against the band of thieves. They did well but more thieves came to the island and it became a never ending battle. The original knights came and went as people age and pass but Pal Joey lives on inducting new knights and working for the good of the people. Jumping in the air and shouting "Pal to All". His parents, alone above him in the clouds are proud of what he has done and the people of Kymer have thanked him for years and will thank him for many more to come. {!} - Interested in the Tarot? - {!} By Hierophant, SRK, co-facilitator of the Majik Guild If you are interested in the Tarot, please check out the Tarot stories in this and the last few issues of ESP. In this spirit, the committee of 8 will find a way to acknowledge everyone who enters this contest because all efforts are united in one. For that reason, everyone will be a winner as Indigo has suggested from the start. We shall build together and make a composite Myth from all the entries. Each and every entry will also have its own place of respect and interest for others in the Dreamscape to enjoy. Join us in the communal effort to make the magic of our lives into folklore and myth so that others can be inspired by the Dream we are living. TO Poetry and Storytelling Guild Members FROM Megret, SRK The Poetry guild will be meeting in our guild hall sometime this week. Hopefully you will all receive mail from me Megret, SrK (74742,2146) or Sunray Kethrey (103106,1340). Many of you have already been added to the guild hall lease, and this first meeting is mainly a "meet, greet, and get to know each other" -- plus naming the locales and decorating and deciding all those fun things! Many of you are on the lease already, but most are not. If you did *not* receive an e-mail message from me, please contact me and Kethrey both! And, may I add, any poetry is welcome at our meetings, as well as having the chance to add *your* input into the guild! We are a team, and, especially with DK moving on into the real world, we need to keep our presence in Kymer known! So watch your mailboxes, and let's get going! TO The Bards Guild Members FROM Megret, SRK Hello, this is Megret, SrK (also all the other "Megret's" you see running around Kymer, but that's not important.) Indi has asked me to help facilitate this guild, and I agreed. As I understand it, there has been nothing done in this guild, and it's about time we got together to meet each other, talk, make a few decisions, etc. As with all the other Guilds, I am not "the leader" of the group, just one of the SrKs willing to put in some time on this Guild. In the waking world I am a professional storyteller, a journeyman in my home state, and I have a good sense of what a guild *can* and *can't* do. As I'm sure you've all realized, we can't make the actual music - at least not with instruments and song - in Kymer, so we need to use the magic of cadence, assonance, and rhyme to tell our tales and "capture" our audience. Traditionally Bards haven't merely been singers. They brought the news, entertained, commented on politics, wrote and sang ballads and lays on request (and for payment) -- and half a dozen other things as well. They learned mnemic techniques to emphasize ideas, learned timing, and to sense the "mood" of the audience. How much of this can be taught? How much is something one must simply "grow into"? Do we have a real purpose on Kymer? And, most of all, what can *we* provide that is missing in Kymer or the SrKs??? How about those of you who are not yet in a guild? Would this kind of thing interest you? if so, just CONTACT me (74742,2146)! We'd love to have you. I would very much like us to get together in our guildhall to simply meet and greet each other, perhaps decorate the guildhall, and discuss our role. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Letters to the Editors ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fellow Kymerians: The other night, myself and a friend were harassed in the snow in Meditation Park. Allow me to set the scene, if I may. After exchanging a friendly hug () we immediately began discussing body sprays, and did not bother to separate our avatars, being deeply engrossed in the conversation. A female avatar comes along, who shall remain nameless, and calls us "Radicals". Assuming she was referring to the generation of which I'm a part, as well as my friend, I made a light remark back about "old fogies". She then shouted "Oh MY GOD, THERE ARE CHILDREN IN HERE!" My friend then reminded her of the time (it was well past 7:30WAT) and stated that children should be in bed. She then yelled at us to get a room! I was FURIOUS. I DO NOT appreciate having my reputation besmirched, especially when the conversation was innocuous - How could you confuse BODY SPRAYS with BODY PARTS? She then left the screen, and I in my anger followed her and told her in no uncertain terms, that if my friend & I were doing anything that was inappropriate for children to see, we would have gone to a turf. I have found out that this is not the first time this self-appointed moralistic vigilante has done this - how many other avatars have been unduly harassed by her sexually inappropriate comments? If her diligence at pursuing what she perceives as people corrupting morals of a minor stems from a religious belief, I would like to remind her that Christ did NOT surround himself with morally upright, OR religious people (not casting aspersions on any avatars that have been harassed) He surrounded himself with thieves, prostitutes, tax collectors, lepers, the outcasts of society. And He gently won them over with his neverending love. Maybe this avatar should take a hint from the wisest Man who lived, and died for us, and do the same. 502, Duckolyte Wing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! To make an appointment for a specific time, either weekends any time or weeknights after 5 p.m. WAT, send me an e-mail with possible times and we will arrange it. Otherwise you can approach me in-world for an impromptu reading or to make a time for later. But please don't interrupt if I'm playing a game such as Worlds of Fortune (my favorite) or Kymer or such. Submitting these listings to ESP! is in addition to submitting event information to the Scheduling Group. Scheduling conflicts, if any, are resolved by the Scheduling Group. Changes to recurring events should be submitted to both the Scheduling Group and ESP! ESP! is available in the Newsstand Library of the WA Community Forum and thus earns no tokens to pay authors. Likewise, advertisements are no charge to the advertisers. Upon the availability of inworld documents and the sale of ESP! inworld, this policy will be reviewed and payments/advertisement rates will be adjusted accordingly. !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!} {!} - Writers' Guidelines for ESP! Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: hosts submitting events are asked to follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
