Dread and I thank all our contributors and readers for helping us to achieve this milestone! Deutsche ESP! Debuts -------------------- This week, we are pleased to announce that Volume 1, Issue 1 of our sister publication, Deutsche ESP!, with Zooey as Editor-in-Chief, will become a regular weekly publication for the German speaking Kymerians. While we are affiliated, each publication is independently run and will not be simply a translation of each other. While there may be times when both Deutsche ESP! and English ESP! will publish the same articles in their respective languages, on the whole, Deutsche ESP! will be a unique publication, with its own staff and its own flavor. It will, however, adhere to the same high standards which our readers have come to expect of ESP! Dread and I look forward to working with Zooey and his staff in order to make the ESP! sister publications the most widely-read in all of Kymer! Exclusive to ESP! ----------------- Our cover story this week is the results of the Survey which Wert P Gumby has been conducting inworld throughout this past week. Some very interesting information has come from this survey. Be sure to take a look and tell all your inworld friends that you read it in ESP! We thank Wert for his efforts on behalf of Kymer and its citizens as well as for providing the results of this survey *exclusively* to ESP! ESP! Sponsors Pinkie & The Brains, a Weekly Game presented by the Duckolytes ----------------------------------------- I personally look forward to joining Brains and Passion on June 6 for the first Pinkie & The Brains game. Details are in the Duckolyte column, "Just Ducky". Be sure to join us for the fun and prizes! I know there are great prizes in store for the lucky winners who find me because ESP! is supplying the weekly prizes! Watch for the results of the first game, exclusive to ESP! beginning with the June 9 Issue #15. Feedback Requested ------------------ In reviewing past issues of ESP!, I've been considering whether an Index of articles and advertisements appearing in ESP! would be helpful to our readers. This would be uploaded to the Newstand Library as a permanent file, and would be updated on at least a monthly basis. Before I take the time to set this up, I'd like to know if our readers would find an Index helpful. So please, take a few minutes to drop me a note at 71273,373 to give me your feedback about this idea. Even just one person replying will indicate that there is sufficient interest to spend the time required for this project. Thanks in advance for your feedback! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Cover Story ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {!} - First Kymer Survey Results - {!} By Wert P Gumby You may have noticed a handful of avatars busily gathering information around Phantasus this past week. They were conducting the first in- world survey for Kymer. Many thanks to all of you who participated in the survey and made it a rousing success; over 140 avatars responded. Below are the questions and results of the survey. How closely do your opinions match the other citizens of our fair city? The first question dealt with the forum. We were curious how often people went into the WorldsAway forum for downloads, postings, e-mail, etc. Almost half (48.94%) admitted being in the forum on a daily basis. 28.05% said they went into the forum 2-3 times a week and 16.54% checked out the forum on a weekly basis. Only 6.47% answered "What's the forum" or admitted never going there. I guess the follow- up question to this should have been "What do you do in the forum?" but we will save that for another survey. Question #2 asked "If you could have any head and you would be the only one to have that head, which head would you choose?" What we were trying to find out was "What's your favorite head without scarcity being a factor." The answers fell into two different categories: existing heads and heads people wished to have inworld. The most popular current heads are (in a 3-way tie for first) the Duck head, the Smiley head, and the Sema head. The Sema head currently worn by Passion, Elwing and Acolyte Libra was described quite often, but few actually knew its name. Second most popular head was the Tut head and third place went to the Chesspiece head. Seems that Artema knows what people like in head wear. Three heads tied for forth place: Clover's Pink Panther head, the rare Monster head, and the common, vendo Cat head. The Skull head, Dragon head, and an Oracle's head all came in fifth place in our survey. Hmmmm ... most people didn't specify "which" Oracle's head they wanted. On second thought, I don't think I want to dig any deeper on that subject! Many people voted for heads that don't currently exist in Phantasus. The most popular choice was for a person's own head, closely followed by a comic book character or a famous person's head. Other highly sought heads were Rabbit heads, Lion (or Tiger) heads, and Mystical or Ghost-like heads. While not garnering many votes, some other unusual suggestions were an Indian Maiden head, Guitar head, Question Mark head, and Ferret head. (OK... WHO slipped that last one in?) The third question dealt with the serious issue of theft in our city. The question read: "How do you feel about thieves in-world?" and the answers should come as no big surprise to anyone. Three-fifths of those surveyed (59.59%) replied that theft should not be allowed, while 23.4% thought it would be OK, if limited to certain areas. Only one-tenth of those responding to this survey (10.63%) thought that "Theft should be allowed." The final choice on this question was "Other, explain briefly" and most avatars seem to feel that there should be risk involved with theft and complained that the thieves faced little chance of prose- cution. More than half thought there should be some sort of Police force to balance out the thieves, while others took the view that "it is a software problem, not a people problem." Survey question #4 caused many to take a hard look at their on-line habits by asking "How many hours a week do you average in WorldsAway?" Many squirmed and admitted "too many" and "more than I can afford" before totaling up the damage. The lowest number of hours per week was 2, while a another professed 100 hours. The average (and also the mean) was a little over 20 hours a week (21.34 hours). FCT, are you listening? What do you think about a SUPER Valued-User Plan? The last question of the survey was a little lighter. We wanted to know "Who is your favorite Oracle?" People had many reasons for voting for who they did. Oracle Uni got highest praise (21.84%), mostly from avatars who had met her at the Gathering or had talked to her in Phantasus. 15.32% chose Oracle Vaserius, while Oracle Teresias was picked 9.48% of the time. Many cited Vaserius as being the most humorous of the trio and Teresias was often referred to as the most mysterious. 50.36% of the avatars surveyed claimed that they had never met an Oracle or had no preference. Again, I want to thank each and every one of those avatars who responded to this survey. Special thanks to Biker Steve, Sassy Wild Cat, Karnage, Larry Lamb and John Whiz for their hard work pounding the streets looking for victims, er... people to survey. We would like to have a new survey every two weeks to give people plenty of time to respond. If you have any questions about the survey or something that you'd like to see asked, please e-mail Wert P Gumby @ 74237,151. All survey answers will be published exclusively in ESP! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! By Dread On Friday, May 24, at 6:25 p.m. we finally got in to the WA community theatre to settle down for the first ever stage production. 23 ghosts watched as the lights dimmed, the curtains went up and Acolyte Serena opened her red book to tell the story of Little Red riding Hood. Despite some minor hiccups, Acolyte Serena kept it moving along whilst the big bad wolf produced some witty adlib to make us forgive the earlier timing hiccups. In other words she used her characteristic humour to saved the day. The best part was the chase scene. I was laughing my a ... err, head off as Little Red Riding Hood ran off and on stage wearing a sad face that only smiled when grandma was finally untied by the hunter. I wondered if it was staged or was it another hiccup, had Little Red Riding Hood eaten a magic mushroom along the path? No, it was staged and it was fun. The curtain lowered at 7:23, the actors bowed and thanked us for attending the performance then Dot Warner, the theatre company's originator, assured that the next production would run smoother and announced that this would be either the three little pigs or Hansel and Gretel. True that there were only fourteen ghosts at the end out of the original twenty-three but hey, I've known thousands to leave a cup final only to miss the deciding goal in the last minute. And this was true for some as Oracle Uni unghosted for a guest appearance at 7.26 to congratulate the theatre company on their first show. All in all it was an entertaining first effort. Props play a major role in stage plays and more so in Phantasus, the wolf head, the gingerbread grandma house, the ferns for the forest, so it's going to be hard to find another play as appropriate to the WA community theatre's props department but I have every confidence that the next time around will be just as impressive as he first. {!} - How Garion and Ce'Nedra arrived in Kymer - {!} By Ce'Nedra Chapter Three Ce'Nedra hummed to herself as she packed some things into a carri-sac for the day's excursion to the old temple with Garion. For the first time since her father had dropped his bombshell, she felt happy. A whole day with Garion! She admired him so much and looked up to him because he was older and wiser than herself. She had told her mother that she was going to visit a friend who had moved away to the neighbouring community village. Her mother, who was secretly in sympathy with her daughter's plight, had thought it a good idea for her to have a break away from home for a while. Early next morning, as soon as her father had gone out, she said goodbye to her mother and left the house to meet Garion at their favourite place on the hill. He was waiting for her when she arrived and smiled as he watched her approach. "You got away okay then Ce'Nedra. Is everything all right at home?" "Hello Garion! Father had already gone out and I told Mother that I was going to spend the day with an old friend." "Good, that means we'll have plenty of time to explore the old temple. Come on, let's get going." They headed off on the track leading out of the village. It was a beautiful morning and Ce'Nedra felt happy and excited as she struggled to keep up with Garion's long strides. He noticed that she was getting breathless trying to keep up with him and slowed down a little. "I'm sorry Ce'Nedra, I'm so keen to get to the temple that I've forgotten you're so much smaller than me." Ce'Nedra looked up at him and smiled. "I've been thinking about what happened to me the other night on Konta Hill. It was such a strange feeling, almost like a dream, but somehow it seemed so real. It was a truly wonderful place that I saw and I wish you could have seen it too." "I must admit I was a bit unnerved when I saw you levitating," Garion said, "When I got near you, it seemed to break the spell, and you fell." "I'm glad you were there to catch me Garion," she looked shyly up at him. "I'll always be there for you Ce'Nedra," he assured her. After a long walk they felt hungry and decided to stop for a break. They could see the outlines of the old ruins in the distance. "We should be there soon," observed Garion, "I hope we find something that will solve the mystery for us. I'm convinced it's got something to do with those tablets you found." As they neared the temple, Ce'Nedra began to feel a little strange, she didn't understand why, it just felt as though something was compelling her to get to the temple, fast. She broke into a run. Garion ran after her. "Hey! Wait for me!" he yelled. She ran quickly up the crumbling steps and into the foyer then stopped to observe the ruin. In front of her was a huge archway with smaller arches at each side, each leading into a separate area of the temple and with rune-like words carved into the stone above each arch. A smell of decay filled the air and Ce'Nedra shuddered as a black eight-legged creature scuttled into the darkness of a recess. Garion stood in front of her and led through the biggest archway. She was about to follow him when she heard a loud rumbling sound , then a short cry, a thud, and then silence. Ce'Nedra stared in horror. "Garion!!" she screamed. There was no answer. Slowly, she stepped through the huge archway, fearful of what had happened to Garion. As she got closer to the room beyond, she saw that part of the floor had collapsed, and there was a gaping hole. She walked carefully to the hole, hoping that she would not be swallowed too and peered cautiously over the edge. She gasped with shock, Garion had fallen about ten feet into a chamber. He was lying motionless on the ground, covered in rubble and dust. "Garion?" she called to him but he didn't move. "Oh no, please don't let him be dead," she whispered to herself. Tears swamped her eyes and rolled over her pale cheeks. She knew she had to go down into the chamber, after a few minutes she had composed herself and threw down her carri-sac first then lowered herself over the side of the hole until she was hanging by her hands, relying solely on the strength of a partially rotten wooden beam. Bravely, she decided to let go and dropped the remaining few feet to the floor. She knelt beside Garion and felt for a pulse. It was beating! He was still alive! Breathing a sigh of relief, she hastily cleared away the stones on top of him and examined him for any broken bones. Nothing seemed to be broken thank goodness, but there was a large lump on the side of his head. She opened her carri-sac and took out the medical supplies she had brought in case of emergency. Garion's head was not bleeding so she wiped it clean with some lotion. She folded her jacket and placed it carefully under his head, and then all she could do was sit beside him and wait for him to come around. As she stared at his face, so deathly pale, she realised that she would have been utterly devastated if he had been killed in the fall. She knew then that she loved him beyond all reason and never wanted to lose him. Daringly and tenderly, she kissed him lovingly on the lips. "Oh my love," she breathed, "please open your eyes, please be all right, I couldn't bear life without you." His eyes flickered and slowly opened and looked up at her anxious face. "Ooooh!" he groaned, "My head, what happened?" "Oh Garion, thank Mor-fus you're all right! Don't try to talk right now, rest for a bit. You fell through the floor into this chamber and hit your head. I thought you had died at first!" Ce'Nedra started crying. "Don't cry, Ce'Nedra, see, I'm fine. It's just a bump. I'll be okay, I promise". They talked for a while about the legends of Krikkit, in particular, the story of how the Shadow Zone came to exist. According to the legend, the planet of Krikkit did not always have a wobble in its rotation. It is said that thousands of years ago, the planet was inhabited by a different race. They were very aggressive, and were always at war with each other. They invented many strange and terrible weapons, each one more devastating than the last, until finally, a fatal mistake by one of the warleaders caused a massive explosion which threw the planet's rotation out of line. Most of the population were killed and the Shadow Zone was formed. Eventually, after things had settled down again, space explorers discovered the planet and realised what a marvelous grain producer it could be due to the incredible daylight that many areas received. It was also said that the ruined temple had been built by the previous inhabitants of Krikkit, but the religion of Mor-fus had somehow been passed on to the present population, probably by the few people that survived the disaster. "I feel much better," said Garion, getting carefully to his feet, "I wonder what's down here. It seems to be some kind of secret chamber." He took the porta-light from his carri-sac and crept to the far end of the chamber. As he played the light over the walls, something glittered. "Ce'Nedra, come and look here, I think I've found something." He started to clear the dust from a spherical metallic object that protruded from the wall. "What's that?" asked Ce'Nedra, moving closer to it. Suddenly, she tripped on a stone and fell heavily against the wall. She put out a hand to save herself, and hit the metallic object. It moved. There was a grinding sound as part of the wall slid back to reveal a large screen, with a control panel below it and various other switches and controls at each side. "Great Mor-fus! What's that?" asked Garion. Ce'Nedra stared at it. "It could be some sort of computer, or a communications device but it's nothing like the computers we have. Could it have belonged to those people that lived on Krikkit in the old days?" "It must have belonged to them," answered Garion. "This place has never been discovered by any of our people, that's obvious. I wonder if it still works." [ To be continued ] {!} - The Coming of BOB - {!} By Chief PI Cyber Penguin (The Grand Scribe of the Great BOB) Since time began, people have believed that Morpheus created Kymer. This is untrue, there is one more powerful than Morpheus. He is the being that created Morpheus, he is "BOB". As many of you know, the beta testing period did not meet the standards of the new Kymer. This is due to the fact that BOB let the simple minded Morpheus take charge while BOB was busy designing turfs. This turned out to be a dreadful mistake, and as BOB noticed the chaos being caused by thieves and hooligans, he decided to take charge. BOB's one plan was to take the form of something in his world and gather a new, strong following. He knew as an Avatar, people would not listen seriously to his claims. As he looked at his globe, showing him every event in Kymer, he noticed a turf with the 2 Chief PI's of Kymer, Cyber Penguin and Banana Lord. They were throwing a party and drinking a lot of Kymer_Country_Comfort. In the drunken confusion, Banana Lord had a vision. He immediately reached for his can of Turf Green spray. He sprayed wildly at the wall, which looked mystical against the rest of the white room. Suddenly the wall flashed a bright white, blinding the entire party, and sending them into a trance. Cyber Penguin was the first to wake himself up, he struggled to pull himself to his feet, looking around for damage to the turf. Then he noticed something strange, he looked at the green wall, and noticed the word BOB in big letters, glowing in big neon lights. Wondering what this meant he attempted to wake the rest of the party. Banana Lord and Acolyte Zippy examined the wall carefully. Banana then explained his vision, "I saw a large face, at first I thought it was the drink, but then it told me something I will never forget". Acolyte Zippy was interested, "What? What did it say?". "I am BOB, gather my followers and help me fix my Kymer" Banana Lord seemed very calm considering what had just happened. The whole party looked around at each other in awe. This was indeed a miracle, Banana Lord was the prophet of BOB, and he must preach The Word of BOB. They decided the ideal way to show a follower of BOB would be to have everyone that believed to paint one wall in their turf Green and name it "BOB". This is the story of BOB, it is very true, ask Chief PI Banana Lord or Chief PI Cyber Penguin. If you believe and wish to become a follower of BOB, please e-mail either one of us. You will receive a follower of BOB package, containing a GIF of the original BOB, BOB following rules and a regular update on the following of BOB. We hope you join the followers of BOB soon, and "May the BOB be with you". BOB Rules ------------------ Bow when the name of BOB is mentioned. eg.... Did you see that great BOB show last night? BOB looked very green! Well, BOB is all powerful! Drink loads of Kymer_Country_Comfort to see visions of the Great BOB. Paint a wall in your Turf Green. Paint a part of you green. I thought, yeah right, sure I will. I have NOT touched the computer for anything except "fun" stuff. When he wants me to do something, I know, it means please do some work. He kept loading, that hard disk whirring, and set me up on a neat account. Since I was never ever a thief, please for- give me for not explaining this too well. This was just a test anyway. My expression said, ok, but you go first. I'll watch, so I can tell you how icky it is. I never just LIKE something. It has to be good, sexy, impressive and appeal to everyone. Let's look at what going to Kymer can be like. First, I actually read the instructions. Most helpful and useful. You learn about the tokens on the Argo and you know you will have to come up with a name. I did NOT realize that I could keep trying out that body machine, so I was headed down the promenade with the "stomper" style and the newbie head, dressed in yellow. This reminds me of the yellow rose of Texas, but I always thought she was much prettier. Too bad we gals don't start out with the rose head, (hint hint hint). I do this with technical guides too, but the pro- grammers have to take the class first. My little (hint)s get removed for the real version. Yep that is what I did ... write and type and test and teach a class or two before I suspended myself into self imposed exile. Women you know you have arrived when you quit work and stay home to go away. Ok, ok, ok ... for everyone, not just women ... Foreword -------- Most of this actually works, and the parts that fail are not that important. However, I cannot take responsibility for it in either way. STOP reading if you cannot agree to these rules. By continuing to read, you agree that I am not responsible for any damages or failures of any nature. In other words, this is just for fun and I did not have anything else to do with my day. (Yeah right) and I dedicate this to myself. I am selfish, egotistical and very spoiled. I. Getting Started. A. Read Instructions Note: This will give you 50 tokens, the body of your choice and a name. If you do not like your face, there is some handy 50 token ones right there in the vendroid. B. Arriving in Kymer Walk on out, expect to be greeted. C. Visit the Visitors Center 1. There is usually a nice person here to answer your questions (like I would leave something out). 2. You should expect to receive gifts for a while. Be thinking about where to put item number 7. Pockets only hold 6 items. D. Talking with others 1. Just type, like I am doing here, you will see it appear in the box at the bottom of the screen. The little buttons on the right allow you to control whether this is regular talking, thinking type, or ESP (the more private type). 2. Be prepared, everyone will know that you are a newbie. The newbie colored clothes give that away, even if you buy a new face. Get to the VMart and change your color as soon as possible. Unless you still have pocket room and wish to remain in the newbie status. This is actually quite fun, just like in the RW, stay young and enjoy your youth as long as possible. II. Watch Out For Thieves *** THIS IS IMPORTANT *** A. Do not hand anything to anyone, unless you never want to see it again. B. Do not put anything down, unless you want to take the chance that you will never see it again. C. Go to the ATM machines in the fountain area. This will give you 50 more tokens and if you stay unghosted for one hour or ghosted for two hours, you will earn 60tokens in your ATM. III. Lost? Now What? A. Press F1 to see a map of Phantasus. B. GO to the forum and join in (TRA-39). There you can read messages and get more information on living in Kymer. There is loads of documentation and even magazines to read in the libraries there but you will know this if you are reading this, but just in case ... FAQ: Q: I hate who I am in Kymer, how can I fix this? A: Easy, just get back to the Argo. Every account gets two avatars. You can change it all, even the sex. The other one will be deleted in 90 days if you do not use it. Or, you can simply change your name. This is done in the Temple, but be warned it gets expensive after numerous trips to change the name. Just ask GG Dreamer, if you can find her. She can tell you about the costs involved. Q: My pockets are full, what can I do? A: Easy, just buy a chest, sold in Vmart and the BarLBar. These hold 10 items and you can even put a second chest inside the first. Or rent a turf to put your things in your own apartment. Renting a turf is easy, but I recommend you visit the forum for instructions first. The Do/Don't Department ----------------------- A. Falling in love: Fully supported by the programmers, but not recommended, but if you must, send all questions/problems to Dear Abby. We cannot be involved in this type of error correction. The programming staff is just too overworked. B. Falling out of love: "Breaking up is hard too oooh do." I have no idea, but I sing, too, so I have to show off all my talents. C. Picking things up: Feel free to pick things up off the floor/ground, if there are noothers around. If it is a really expensive item, it would be great if you paged anacolyte. Acolytes could help get the item back to the original owner. Do not pick something up when there are lots of others around. They will all think you are stealing the item. You will be run out of town. You will be forgiven onceyou return the item, beg forgiveness and agree to be struck by lightening. This procedure also works for re-falling in love. If the procedure fails though, just don't blame me. There are a lot of other things that could have been in a FAQ or do's and don'ts, but this should get anyone underway, so use some common sense and go away and bon voyage. PS: Learn all you can about role playing and dreaming. This is tricky but I cannot sit here all night too. I use my nights to go away. My RW squeeze knows he has arrived by the size of the cserve bill he is paying. Needless to say, he doesn't get to go away ... not that he would anyway. Besides he really does not know what I do with the bills anyway, this looks like electricity to me. {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy, Queen of the Dark Side I think just about everyone has had enough of the water spells, so I am just going to include several miscellaneous spells here for you to try. Then next week I will start a new series of spells for your enjoyment. Please let me know if there is anything in particular that you would like to see here in this section of ESP! The Obi Stick, or Staff of Hermes --------------------------------- The Obi stick, or caduceus, or staff of Hermes, as it is variously known, is an emblem of power and the control of power. It is a "magic wand" in the literal sense, and specifically signifies the ability of its user to control the universal life force. It is thus a potent tool for an aspiring magician or witch to prepare. Its obvious use requires no explanation, as those who cannot immediately think of uses will probably not be able to use it in any event. The method used to prepare one of these wands is the best kept secret of the various practices which use them. In the Obeah practice of Jamaica, the secret of the Obi stick is very carefully protected, so much so that most of the better practitioners will only make one to hand on their power to a successor. That a chicken is sacrificed to the tree which gives its wood for the Obi stick is only the beginning of a long and complicated ritual by which the stick is made. Many years ago when I lived in a back country area, I had occasion to make two or three of these wands for students. I made them according to the following method, and as they were well received and put to good use I have no hesitation in recommending the method, although, so far as I know, it comes from no practice of which I have received formal training or informal knowledge. As the method requires access to a "wild place," preferably deep in the woods, it is unlikely that many people will be able to follow the directions given. These arts are more for the country person than the city dweller. The finished wands have a very good feel, and once they are conse- crated they may be put to good use. I have even had a Jamaican Obi man ask me how I had made such a powerful stick! The ritual of producing the wand takes a long time, but the result is well worth the effort. Firstly, enter the wild place and find a young oak tree, or a swamp oak. Locate two good ivy vines, in the same area if possible. Make friends with the young oak tree, and get its permission to become a wand. This usually takes several weeks of conversation and discussion with the spirit of the tree. Unless the tree is immediately willing to become a wand, it's worth spending some time with the tree discussing just what you have in mind for the wand. The time will not be wasted in any event. I have had a tree point out that the wands I was looking for were in process of being naturally made only a few feet away from where we had been talking. The tree, once it has given permission to be made into a wand, should be watered with a solution made of a half cup blood meal, a quarter cup of bone meal, and a cup of good nitrogen fertilizer to about three gallons of water. This should be done in the fall of the year, after the autumnal equinox. This is the usual price for the wood, and it is better than sacrificing a chicken as the fertilizer will go right to work, while the chicken would have to decompose. The following year, about Candlemas, visit the tree again, and find the branch you desire. It should be a fairly low main branch about an inch in diameter, although a three-fourths inch diameter is all right. Transplant some ivy vines to the base of the oak as soon as possible, and cover the area around the base of the tree with small pebbles to keep bush growth away from the tree and the vines. After the vernal equinox, or as soon as the ivy vines are established, tie the vines to train them to the oak. You want to get the vines to your branch as directly as possible. At this time you may want to prune the tree, being careful to discuss this with the tree in advance. Prune just enough to eliminate suckers and dead wood. By midsummer the vines should be at your branch, and well-trained to the tree. Twist the vines around the branch to form a helix (or spiral), and tie them in place if necessary. The vines must be tight to the branch. From this point on you must check the tree every month or so. Keep the vines tight to the bark of the branch, the excess vine and tree well cut back, and the vine and the tree healthy and well-contented. This process continues for two or three years. In time the vines will strangle the branch in the pattern of the helix, and there will be a definite marriage of the two in the process. Once the branch is about an inch and a quarter in diameter at its smallest end, and the vine from a quarter to three-eighths inch in diameter, the branch and vines are ready to be cut out. The permission of the tree must be obtained again, and the vines should also be told that their purpose is at an end. The actual cutting should take place between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. First the growth end of the vine should be cut, and then the growing end. Then the vines themselves, which hopefully you have kept from spreading, should be uprooted and cast from the tree to ensure that the tree will not be strangled by the vine after it has yielded the wand. The growing end of the branch is now severed from the tree's main trunk and your branch is at hand. The wound on the tree should be dressed, covered, and patched so the tree will not rot. It may be necessary to warm pitch for this purpose. All trimming of the tree should be done at once, and the pruning of the tree also done to remove suckers and dead wood. The object is to leave the tree in as healthy a condition as possible. The finished branch should be between three and four feet long, with the two helical vines which have impressed themselves into the bark of the branch for about half their diameter. As mentioned, all the cuttings of the branch and the tree prunings should be left at the base of the tree. The tree should be thanked for giving you the branch. The trimmed branch must then be dried for a while, at least until the vernal equinox, before it is worked for use. If it is desired to glue the vines to the branch - a wise idea - either fish glue or hoof glue should be used. Casine or plastic glues will change the feel of the wand. The gluing should be done before the consecration, which may be done according to any method you prefer. Note: While in your wild place, take time to stop and appreciate all that is about you. Smell the earth, the trees, the leaves. Absorb their energies and send them yours. One of the contributing factors to our isolation from the rest of nature is the insulation of our shoes. Whenever you can, go barefoot. Make contact with the earth. Feel it; absorb it. Show your respect and love for nature and live with nature. Wiccan Sabbats -------------- I know sometimes when I talk about spells, I give you Wiccan Sabbats, forgetting that all who read my article are not Wiccans, Witches or Pagans. Therefore, I want to leave you with a list of the eight Sabbats along with their dates so you know what I'm talking about. Samhain or Hallowmas: November 1 Yule or Winter Solstice: Approximately December 21 Candlemas or Imbolc: February 2 Spring or Vernal Equinox:Approximately March 21 Beltane: May 1 Summer Solstice: Approximately June 21 Lammas or Lughnasadh: August 1 Autumnal Equinox: Approximately September 21 Lodestone Spells ---------------- Lodestones are natural magnets. For many years they have been used in all sorts of spells, primarily to attract things to the one using them. Because lodestones move without being touched, they seem to be the best example of living beings in the mineral world. You can purchase lodestones at scientific supply stores, occult shops and some herb stores. They have been used in magic by a number of cultures. As a result they have accumulated a wide range of spells around them. Most of these spells are based on the property of the lodestone to attract small bits of iron. Many modern magicians prefer the more powerful alnico or ceramic magnets available today. Any of these may be used to good effect for the following spells. Lodestone Good Luck Charm ------------------------- Keep a lodestone in a covered earthenware dish. Once a week, on the same day, take it out of the dish and place it in a glass of water. Let it sit in the water for a few minutes while you thank it for its help in attracting good things into your life in the last week. Then take the lodestone out of the water and drink the water. Dry the lodestone and place it back in its container, sprinkling a few pinches of "magnetic sand" (iron filings) over it, and put it away in its container until the next week. You must keep the lodestone out of sight, usually in a closet or private place. You can tell the lodestone just what you want by "programming it" with symbols. For example, to gain increased income, place a silver dime in the container with it. For love, you could put a photo of someone in the container. The purpose of the lodestone is to assist you in drawing to you those things you want to have in life. Lodestone Healing Spell ----------------------- I must admit that I have only met one person who could use this spell successfully. She was an old woman who did root working in the Sweetwater, Tennessee area. I will tell you the procedure she used, and hope that you also can do it. Pray over a lodestone, which is kept in a red charm bag and used only for healing. Tell the lodestone you want it to remove all sickness from the person, naming the person by name. Then take the lodestone and pass it over the person's body from head to foot, one stroke at a time. After each stroke the stone is to be dipped in a bucket of cool water. This requires about fifty strokes, from the center of the head to the toes and then to the bucket of water. If the person is bedridden, he or she is turned over to allow the magnet to stroke every part of the body. Once the stroking is completed, the lodestone is thanked and replaced in the bag. The bucket of water is emptied in the middle of a road. Be careful that it does not splash on the person who empties it. Lodestone Charms ---------------- Lodestone charms are occasionally made into charm bags. In this case they are usually "fed" with iron on a regular basis. In addition, the charms are usually made up with herbs or some form of symbol to indicate just what is to be drawn to the wearer. I know a young man who had one made up with a tiny automobile to assist him in obtaining a car. He was able to buy the car he wanted after wearing the charm for a month or so. Blessed * Be {!} - Hatemail No.4 - {!} By Throbbing Gristle Here I am, sitting at my imaginary desk in my turf. I have removed the skullhead and he is lying there with a look on his face that tells me I have something to do. From his frustrated F4 look I can see that he tried to ESP me several times, trying to tell me to start, but yet I have not found the right entry. Entry for what? Everybody urged me to write again and I had a lot of ideas going through my head, then pushed them aside again or set them to a later date, 'cause there was more information to be found. Well, I wanted to do that Oracle Uni Interview, but still I'm waiting for her response. Somebody else must have had the same idea at the same time. I sent an E-Mail to Princess Toadstool cause I think that writing a few lines about her could be an interesting theme, too, as her image in the community seems to be a rather split one. No response so far. I asked you: What does the dream mean for you ... eagerly awaiting your answers. Oh yes, I got ONE answer. Nearly all and definitely only positive reactions on my further articles came from the darkside and the twilight zone of Kymer. Talking to helpers and acolytes, I learned that lots of them don't seem to read the newspapers of Kymer anyway, or do not react on the things. So all you bright and positive people of the dreamscape ... WHAT ARE YOU? The silent community? A big heap of consumers only? Or do you also have a voice to speak of your dreams, ideas and problems? Or, as I normally tend to write about problems, do you prefer to ignore that there are some? How come that the only ones who really seem to reflect about these problems are the persons involved in them or even who cause them? All the reports about theft and crime, all the thoughts that are spread by those who try to bring a little bit of light into the backgrounds of all this seem to be ignored by the rest of the com- munity who does neither discuss nor argue. Sometimes they try to act, and then there's only fundamental rejection. This is all you have to offer? Or do you not feel the need to add any points to the dis- cussion, because you are so sure that you are the ones that represent the right? Ah, my skull has switched to F5 now, he feels that I got started ... I walked around Kymer with many different names and faces in the last three weeks, and I have seen a lot of things that made me doubt if all these real goodies in the dreamscape are as good as they pretend to be. I'm gonna do a save-message diary in the future to tell you about my personal adventures. As I write this, a new idea pops into my mind. This could be my future column in ESP!: Tales from the darkside, this could be some very funny and some very bad material. I am quite aware that my own behavior inworld and my more positive attitude towards "not so welcome" avatars always keeps me on the edge between "good" and "evil", and you wouldn't believe how much I like to be here. There is always fun and action, even if not everything is coming up roses. I'm writing the thoughts going through my head. Maybe you don't wanna know. If so, I guess you have already skipped this. I will skip it too now. So I finish with some things that really bugged me in the last days: Two self-called helpers who spent their time sending ESP bombs to bypassing darksiders. A so-called SUNRAY who just drops down from the sky to tell me that my name is disgusting and makes her "feel sick in the stomach". Nice, eh? Oh you suns shine bright, that's the kind of behavior we really like to see from your positive appearances. Of course, she was even too cowardly to explain what made her get some "unclean" emotions about that name that I myself did not have ... Too bad, you will read the name very often in the future .. . My dearest friend Head Temptress is still around, now disguised as a blue duck and calling herself Duckolyte. What out for this, she is certainly not. Therefore she is one of those lingering around the turf elevators all day long, trying to get access to other avatars' turfs, I think. Watch out for this, it surely will bring you no good, my friends. And watch out for messages that somebody is suddenly following you; it happens often there. Oh yes, and the rumours I heard about the planned adventure area ... what will this have to do to Kymer? In a world, where people have no worse problems than complaining about some avatars' "bad language" all day long, murder games shall get legalized ... great, this is even better than TV. I feel somebody knows what is and is not good for kids. I wouldn't care about these plans, for I think all these protection attempts are useless anyway in the world of 1996, if there wasn't all that sweetish protection talk on the other hand. Has anybody ever noticed how SICK the relations between these things are? Have fun, don't swear while you kill. Enough now. "You kick a**, keep it on" was one of the comments I got on my earlier Articles. I hope I did it again, cause sometimes I would REALLY like to. Don't get me wrong. I love the dreamscape. And that's why I'd sometimes like to kick. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Si ahora yo te dijera que habia que andar por ciudades perdidas y llorar en sus calles oscuras sintiendose debil, y cantar bajo un arbol de estio tus suenos oscuros, y sentirte hecho de aire y de nube y de yerba muy verde... Si ahora yo te dijera que es tu vida esa roca en que rompe la ola, la flor misma que vibra y se llena de azul bajo el claro nordeste, aquel hombre que va por el campo nocturno llevando una antorcha, aquel nino que azota la mar con su mano inocente... Si yo te dijera estas cosas, amigo, que fuego pondria en mi boca, que hierro candente, que olores, colores, sabores, contactos, sonidos? Y como saber si me entiendes? Como entrar en tu alma rompiendo sus hielos? Como hacerte sentir para siempre vencida la muerte? Como ahondar en tu invierno, llevar a tu noche la luna, poner en tu oscura tristeza la lumbre celeste? Contestants may begin to seek only after they have received the secret word, which must be given to the host who is found hiding. This contest is open to all avatars in Kymer. It is being sponsored by the Mythology Guild of the Sunray Knights of Kymer (K of K). There is no limit to the number of words. 2. As you may or may not know, The Knights of Kymer (also sometimes known as Sunrays) were first seen on Halloween. They appeared to help bring light to Phantasus to combat the dark forces of the Vampyres. This contest has been designed to create a myth regarding the origins of the Knights, before that fateful Halloween. As defined in the Knights Mission Statement (see WA Life in Forum for file PRE2STAT.TXT): Knights throughout the centuries in the waking world have been considered messengers and protectors of the light of a higher power. This principle is written upon the banner borne by the Knights of Kymer. So, dreamers, it is up to you. Where did the first Knights come from? How did they band together? Who were they? These questions and others are queries to be expounded upon. Ideas to be built on. Feel free to create the greatest story ever told. 3. All entries must be submitted to Sunray Kibbi at 75032,3720 by Wednesday, June 19,1996 at 5:00PM WAT. Winners will be announced on Saturday June 22, 1996 at 7:00PM WAT at the Mythology Guildhall Turf. 4. A panel of 7 judges, including Oracle Uni and Alayne, the Worlds Away Storyteller, will judge the submissions based on origina- lity, creativity and content. All judges decisions are final. All submissions will become property of The Mythology Guild of the Sunray Knights of Kymer. 5. Rare and unusual prices will be awarded for the Best Creation Myth as well as two honorable mentions. 6. Any questions regarding the contest can be addressed inworld or by email to Sunray Kibbi at 75032,3720; Sunray Fawn at 102770,2341 or SunRay Fleke at 75112,1375. {!} - Sunray Knights Experience Growing Pains - {!} by SunRay Render Sometimes I find myself in an advantage situation. This came to "light" recently when I was copied on some inter-guild email. Some guilds are finding themselves duplicating efforts of other guilds. Some guilds are not doing anything at all. I wanted to express how communication among ourselves is of the highest priority. In our world, communication, whether email, forum posts, or inworld meetings, is our best tool for guiding the community. We must always talk to each other to keep ourselves informed. Communication is what our world is all about! Previously I have opened this column to anyone in the Sunray Knights. I am still encouraging each and every one of you to keep in touch. You may send me email with the raw data and the staff of KnightTimes will write your article. Let us help you help our world. Thanks to all who have previously contributed material. Special thanks to my sister SunRay Kethrey for inspiring me to write this article. {!} - Sunray Auction Report - {!} by SunRay Hera Wednesday past, we had another auction. Attendance was excellent for us, the Sunray Knights of Kymer. Some came to watch and some came to bid. While we had lower attendance than the bigger auctions, we raised over 45,000 tokens for our Replacement Fund. I "gave away" some real bargains, including a snowball for 100T, a piece of Halloween candy for 600T and a Rose head for 1000T. I was remiss in telling you the turf address. It was "Sunray Auction." Please forgive me. I had some announcements at the end of the auction, but noticed only four ghosts had stayed for them. I will repeat them here. The Sunray auctions will not adhere to any "regular" schedule. The only advance notice of them will be here in KnightTimes column of ESP! KnightTimes has protected rights with no one having permission to cut and paste, transcribe, and/or manipulate any or part of the information contained within.** Whew. At the next auction, this coming Monday, May 27, at 9am WAT, we will have a new bidding method in addition to the other ones used. I think this way might offer more help to some bargain hunters. Again, as I said in the announcements, we are only looking for "fair" prices, NOT necessarily the "highest" prices. Since all tokens raised are essen- tially given back to the community, we are happy to raise just enough to meet our goals. Again, speaking on behalf of all members, we thank you very much for helping us help you and the newcomers. We appreciate your sincere desire to contribute to our cause of helping those in need of relief. Good spirits can make the light shine brighter. {!} - Poetry & StoryTelling Guild Schedule - {!} by SunRay Dream Keeper Here is the Poetry and Storytelling Guild schedule for upcoming events. Letters to the Editors ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dear Dread, I am sending this mail to you rather than Acolyte Brynne because I know you personally and feel easier writing to somebody I know. Recently (i.e the last 5/6 issues), the paper has been getting better and better, there is always everything I want to know, and things I didn't want to know but enjoy reading anyway. There are hardly any mistakes, and when there are mistakes, they are not the fault of the "ESP!" editors. The layout is very good, and the stories from the Avatars of WorldsAway are always fun to read. (Especially the one in issue 9/10 Theft - A manifold of viewpoints!!) Thank you so much for the brilliant paper you produce. Thanks again, Cyber Penguin, Chief PI Dread replies: I'm glad you didn't notice the spelling mistakes in my article last week then, pheww. Submissions - {!} Each issue of ESP! requires a great deal of time to prepare. Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: once we get an Events Coordinator on staff, s/he will be grateful if hosts submitting events will follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
