I'll be there and will pick a *real* good hiding spot! Join Brains, Passion and me for a fun-filled evening and maybe *you* will win that special prize when you search all of Kymer and manage to find me! ESP!'s Writing Competition -------------------------- The details are included in Dread's article in this issue, but start thinking back to when YOU arrived in Kymer and get ready to share your tale with the rest of us. We're working on the prize list now and a full list will be included in Issue 13 (May 26). Get ready! Get set! Grab your pencils (or word processors) and start writing! ESP! Deutsche ------------- If everything goes according to plan, with ESP! English's uploading of Volume 1 Issue 13 (May 26, 1996), Zooey, the Editor-in-Chief, will also be uploading Volume 1 Issue 1 of ESP! Deutsche. To our German readers, event hosts, writers, poets, joke writers: your submissions are needed! Send your articles to Zooey at 101552,3560! ESP! English and ESP! Deutsche both have the same goal: to become the best source of information and most widely-read publications in all of Kymer. We both have the same slogan: ESP! It's *your* soapbox! Original Stories and Articles Needed ---------------------------- To accomplish our goal of being Kymer's premier newspaper, original stories and articles are needed. ESP! currently does not earn any income because it is available in the Newstand Library, costing our readers nothing more than the RW pennies spent for the time to down- load. ESP! also does not charge for advertisements. Whatever treasury we have comes from Dread's and my personal funds which are used to pay for our business turf and will also be the source of prize funds for our Writing Competition. We, therefore, are not in a position at this time to pay for articles. We regret that it cannot be otherwise right now as we both believe authors deserve payment for their work. The only payment ESP! offers to its writers is the prestige of having their articles appear in our pages. We have heard from many of our writers that they have made new friends because avatars are impressed by the quality of their writing in ESP! and seek out the writer to congratulate him or her. Join our prestigous group of authors and submit your stories, articles, poetry or whatever else might be your specialty! Attention Advertisers! ---------------------- We have been running your advertisements for quite some time and do not know the current state of your business. Please check through our Advertisement section for the accuracy and timeliness of your ads. Please send mail to 71273,373, giving it the subject of "Advertisement Confirmation" and confirm that your advertisement should continue as it appears, be cancelled or be changed; if it requires changing, please submit the new ad. Thanks for your cooperation! A Final Note ------------ We congratulate the Kymer Clarion staff for achieving the milestone of its 40th issue and being the longest-running publication in Kymer's young history. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! The final VOTING tabulation has been accomplished! Much thanks to the support team that did a fine job counting the ballots! Morning and Afternoon: Karynda3 Raman SunRay Darien-GK Evening: Temptress "Bella, Badger of Brockhall" Zedena The preferred allocation of FCT resources was initially discussed in the forum, and the posted messages tallied as follows: 37 votes were cast as forum messages, and the tally was: What aspect of WorldsAway should FCT emphasize when allocating resources? 15 An adventure area 10 Glue (as a write-in vote) 07 Documents 03 Furniture and the ability to sit 01 Additional heads and other objects 01 More power for the Acolytes 00 Additional Oracles and Acolytes We then began to advertise in world with macros and word of mouth: Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! VOTE today, May 18th! Make your Opinion Count! 6-8am, 1-3pm, 8-10pm. VOTE turf. OPINION POLL: NOW WHAT?? What aspect of WorldsAway should FCT emphasize when allocating resources? Bring a Turf Spray can with the appropriate number of remaining sprays. 5) An Adventure Area, with combat tools and health points. 4) Glue, for securing objects to the walls and floors of a private turf. 3) Inworld Documents, including stored messages and artwork. 2) Heads, Furniture, and the ability to sit. 1) Increased powers for the Acolytes, more Acolytes, and more Oracles. 0) Write in vote, please specify to the Registrar via ESP. 123 votes were cast during the six hours that the polls were open. 45 Glue 24 Furniture and sitting 19 Adventure 15 Documents 14 Acolytes 06 Write in (5 unspecified, 1 Glue/Unglue, no sitting) We were registering voters by using the Friends/Strangers list. Our procedures were a little ragged in the beginning; we failed to include a few names due to a crash, and we think that one avatar may have managed to vote twice. The procedure that worked the best was very simple: When a person votes, check immediately to ensure that they are on the Strangers list, move them to the friends list, and THEN record the vote. Perhaps fifty other folk stopped by but didn't actually vote, inclu- ding three small time crooks who attempted to steal some of the spray cans, rather than voting. Commentary ---------- The forum and inworld crowds were decidedly different: An adventure area and documents dominated the discussion in the forum, but Glue made a strong showing as a write in vote. Glue, Furniture, and Sitting completely dominated the voting inworld, with Adventure, Documents, and Acolytes as also rans, each with only 10% of the vote. More than 60% of the voters want to see additional features for enhancing the enjoyment of turfs. 32 avatars voted during the European time slot from 5-8am, 9 of the 14 Acolytes votes occurred during this time period. 65 avatars voted during the 1-3pm daytime slot, 25 voted during the 8-10pm late evening slot. This amounts to one vote every three minutes, and we could have handled twice that amount very easily. Next time we hold an event of this sort (monthly perhaps), I intend to adjust the hours just a bit to 6-8am, Noon-3pm, 7-9pm. The Second Point of View bug, that forces you to ghost or pick up some other object, after you put something in a pocket chest, is a MAJOR annoyance, as is the ESP bug. A couple of small time thieves nicked a few spray cans, and got tossed out three or four times each, causing several avatars to wait for the next batch of ballots to be recycled, but they were little more than a mild annoyance. Booting them out is still pretty slow, an entry on the AVATAR menu would be nice, and a third column in the friends and strangers list for selectively blocking ESP and GUESTS would be MOST welcome. All in all a VERY successful format. However, less than 20% of the voters brought their own spray cans, and perhaps 50% of the voters proudly announced their vote. I have to think about it some more, but the convenience of accepting in room verbal and ESP votes may outweigh the philosophical elegance of the spray can based secret ballot, especially if the thieves make a nuisance of themselves. Admittedly the petitioning approach we used during December for the The Friends/Strangers list worked very well indeed for registering the voters, ESPECIALLY after I started depending on presence of the avatar name in the STRANGERS column, rather than checking the ESP rollbar. The end result of the vote is that much LESS emphasis than I had supposed should be placed on an Adventure area and Documents. Improved security and nicer decorations for our turfs are clearly the prefer- ence of this sample of the populace. GermanGiant has substantial expertise in this area, so I would hope to solicit his support. FCT has sponsored several email surveys and market analyses. We will also be checking with FCT to see if they have any interest in supporting or *officially sponsoring* an inworld opinion polling organization. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! Good luck. {!} - Dread's Arrival In Kymer - {!} Official Start of the ESP! Competition By Dread My grandfather had told me all about the moon queen when I was a little boy. How she would ride on a thread spun from moonlight all the way to Earth and take away naughty children. All this while we sat on the balcony each evening before my bedtime, watching the clear sky and counting the stars. The moon queen lived in an ice palace deep inside the moon, a place where it was said was the gateway to many worlds, dimensionality and infinity ebbed at the ice palace gates like a breakwater to keep our universe stable. My grandfather rocked penduliusly on an old unvarnished chair, I used an upturned terracotta pot. When the moon was full he would entertain me for hours with tales of his past and surreal encounters which I found hard to believe. "But how do you know all that grandad?" "Because boy, I am the only one to return, you will see it too one day, it is your destiny, your fate awaits you, now sleep." These same words we exchanged every night. I would keep the conversation alive for as long as I could to stave my bedtime. I could usually employ my puppy eyes to better effect when the moon was full but eventually it would come to asking if I would return from the ice palace too. "You will fare well, I have shown you all things, now go to bed and sleep my precious boy". I would go to my room and wait for the lights to go out. When my grandfather was asleep, about an hour later, I would open my window and wave to Paco below. He always got away before me and would wait under the carpenter's awnings. I would slide down the vines and together we roamed the village for an hour or two, full of mischief. One night when I returned I found the window locked. To my horror I knew my grandad had discovered my secret. Reflecting for a moment on my punishment, I heard a shrill that almost made me let go of the vines. I turned to see a ghosted figure approach from the sky, transparent yet silouhetted against the full moon. I froze as I realised it was the moon queen, the moonlight thread visible behind her, and then in an instant, she was looming. "What do you want?" I shouted, "Go away!" She didn't speak, her face was expressionless. The window opened, I turned and was so relieved to see my grandfather reach out. I started to climb towards him but he took the vines with his left hand and using a cleaver hacked away with the other. "Grandfather help me!" I screamed in disbelief, "What are you doing!" He smiled and cut the last vine as I fell away from the wall and landed on a trolled fabric the moon queen had thrown under me. I stood, looking at my grandfather, confused. "I'm scared grandfather." "Good," he replied "it is good that you are, go now and fulfill your destiny." "But you cut the vines grandfather." "Fare well my boy, remember my hands at the vine, remember." With this, the fabric wrapped itself around me so I was inside a transparent bubble. I was suspended in zero gravity yet could breath. I was terrified as the moon queen ascended the moonlight thread taking me away. The journey was long for I awoke on the floor of the ice palace. The cycloramic sight was breathtaking and awesome. I was warm, yet all around me were huge ice pillars and mile-high gargoyles and from each, tree thick ice chains suspended a lithium gyroscope as big as a house which hung above me. What looked like a huge mandrill approached me. I stood petrified. The mandrill smiled, swinging his tail like a happy dog. "Hello, do not be afraid, you are now Gumkhana, follow me." "Wait," I said, "why is the moon queen in the ball?" She is the tundra of the universe, the ice Goddess that is unmeltable and true love of Morpheus the sevana God who ensures the grassy lands. Between them they secure an equilibrium that forces the darkness of other worlds to cease at the palace gates. Gumkhana, they are the Cosmos. The mandrill reached out for my hand and led me through the stark ice monoliths which lined the path out of the ice palace and to a city of steel framed by glass towers. It felt like we were riding the air effortlessly until we arrived at the tower of Mordechai. "We are here. This is my tower and your new home." "My home?" The mandrill Mordechai talked a lot. He explained all about his love for the moon queen, it was always a topic and I soon became tired of talking about her. I asked many questions and as I had become accustomed with my grandfather's crypticality so it was with Mordechai too and I never got much that mattered out of him, or so I thought at first. We lived in the tallest tower, from it I could see the whole world but the sky was always night. Mordechai explained that this was because the moon princess was continually weaving light from the stars for the Earth people. After a year Mordechai set me a task. He said that I should climb the tower until I reached the top and there I would find a golden sword to slay the dragons in future lives. I didn't argue but climbed the tower which took me three days or so I guessed. When I found it, I couldn't pick it up. It was so heavy that I had to return for a rope and go back to lower the sword down the outside of the tower. This, said Mordechai, was why I would never lose my sword. It had not felt like it, but I lived in the steel city until Mordechai said I had become a man. He prepared a food basket and led me out of the city, through the pass in the distant mountains and to a village that looked like my own home one. From the time we had crossed the mountains, there had been daylight and I romped with vigour the rest of the way. We arrived famished, almost a week after we had set out, but the reception was worth it. In the village square, Mordechai took me to an inn. I wanted to stop a while and talk to the crowds, I had never seen so many in one place, there were happy smiling people, elves, giants and a blue goose with two heads. They were drinking and dancing to strange music but I followed Mordechai into the inn. Mordechai ate a lot, he always did, but now was incredible. He ate for five whole hours while I got drunk on a flagon and a goat's belly full of wine. When I woke slumped across the wooden planked table, Mordechai had gone. I shouted his name but he didn't reply and I searched the inn and the village until I was sure he was gone. Finally I strapped my sword down my back and headed out of the village towards the daylight, where the tops of the trees met the hue of the blue sky. I walked for a long time until my stomach crippled me and rested on a nearby rock. From there I saw the end of the land and the sea. Was I still on the moon or had I been in another world all along. Instantly my stomach was healed as adrenalin forced me on towards the sea. As I neared I made out a vessel and headed for it. I met a woman on the shore whose family lived on the boat and where going to sea soon. Two years ago when competition became too great they'd decided to set up a fish farm inside the limestone rocks across the sea. In the dark of night I lost track of how far we'd gone and we arrived at the fish farm in the morning. "There are caves like this all over the area known only to the fishermen and this one only to us." said the women's son. Inside the cave it was like a miniature paradise and was not like a cave at all. A lagoon was surrounded by tall cliffs, perfect for a fish farm. My hosts set about their work. I helped, but as we threw the nets over they clipped my golden sword laying on the side and took it to the deep. No one knew how deep it was and with gentle persuasion I secured a rope around my ankle and dived in. I swam as fast as I could and noticed that the water became clearer until eventually I could see the mighty sword resting by what looked like a large sea hare. I got almost within arms reach and the ankle rope stopped me. I reached feebly for it but couldn't force the extra inches. Foolishly I freed my ankle from the rope and grabbed the sword disturbing the sea hare which released a cloud of dye and blinded me. I looked up for the rope but all was black and my eyes were stinging painfully. Without the rope I wouldn't be able to haul the sword up on my own. My first thought was to move away from the sea hare, the sword was much lighter in water but heavy enough. I was swept away by a current and felt myself dragged along the sea bed holding dearly on to my sword until I crashed against what felt like a rock wall. I realised that I was actually inside a tiny cave inside the rock face, like I was already inside a lagoon of a limestone cave within the moon. I pushed the sword into the rock and it gave way. I needed to place it somewhere safe and return to the surface to replenish my air supply soon. With my free hand I felt around the hole I'd made and felt a ledge. I extended my arm and couldn't believe it when my hand broke the water's surface. I felt air! At least, it was not water. I threw the sword in and with one last effort squeezed through the hole. I was in a natural caisson with hundreds of nautiluses floating about, their spiraling shells pumping out water replacing it with air. The water bobbed on my chin even standing on my toes but I could breath, the air was foul but my lungs felt good as I almost got dizzy breathing. The caisson was only 3 feet square and I could see the top of the water lapping against the roof of an opening opposite the hole I had entered. I stood in the cave long enough for my eyes to stop stinging then checked the opening with my foot. I had a choice to make; I could go back for a longer rope or explore the new opening. My underwater curiosity dominated and I seemed to have no fear as I took a deep breath and committed to the bowels of the ocean once more for my sword. As I swam through the gap and opened my eyes I saw very clearly. I swam effortlessly through clumps of sea cacti and then, was about to return to the caisson for air, when I saw a chain, a boat lay in anchor. My head broke the surface loudly as again I gasped for air, my mouth open wide. The waters were calm like the lagoon, but I wasn't in the lagoon but a sea. The sun blinded me, I could remember it as a young boy, it was the biggest star by day and we'd seen plenty by night my grandfather and I. Was I back on earth? had I made it? was it this simple? The excitement made my heart somersault as I climbed aboard and flopped exhausted onto the deck. I rolled onto my back, the sun stung my eyes and I let the bobbing boat put me to sleep. "Hey mon wake up! wake up mon, what you is doing on ma boat mon?" I was disturbed by a warlike fellow. His face was black, his hair was curly and long, like the Medusa head I had seen in the ice palace. I jumped to my feet quickly reaching for my sword and stood wielding it menacingly above my head. "Are you an ogre?" I asked. He laughed aloud steadying himself on the cabin door as he did so, then he looked at the sword and then at me. "No mon, I is a rastafarian, I is called Dread, what about you mon, does you has a name? "I am Gumkhana from the land of the humans." "Ahhh," replied Dread, " then we have one thing in common." "We do?" Dread laughed continuously as we lowered a launch over the side and paddled to the island. When we got ashore he warned me of evil spirits. I thanked him and walked inland to catch up with my destiny. I didn't get far when I fell in to a trap and found myself in a net suspended form several branches. A tribe of little men surrounded me and taunted me with their spears. I was tied and taken to their camp where the chief talked but I couldn't understand. They were the Mong tribe, that much I figured out, and tied to a tree on each side of me were two others. "Who are you?" I asked them. "I am Guybrush Threepwood, mighty slayer of LeChuck," said the one on my right, "and I am Simon the Sorcerer." Well they told me of their impressive adventures but I had none to tell and lied about how I had slain the moon dragons but they laughed, "you mean Mordechai! Have you come from the ice palace too?" I was gobsmacked, they had cracked me. "Errr... yes, you know Mordechai?" "Of course, he is mentor of all great adventurers including the greatest adventurer ever, ever, ever there was." said Guybrush. "Oh?" I asked, "and who is that?" "Why Chepstow Blowfish of course!" remarked Simon. "Who?" "Who he asks! The only one to ever return that's who," shouted Simon. Convinced that I had blood of the greatest adventurer of all time I began to see a way to break loose. "Simon, do you still have powers, I mean do you think you can dupe one of these guys to untie me?" Simon was not confident but he tried to hypnotise a few of them without success. What he did do was manage to confuse one so that he dropped a voodoo doll into the fire and at that we watched poor Guybrush scream in agony until he died. "Oh dear," said Simon, "let me try again." "No, make them eat the rotting fruit under these trees, the sorbitol will make them more susceptible. Simon did it and then it was easy to for him to make the weakest untie me. As soon as I was free I rushed for my sword. I remembered how once I couldn't lift it and now with maturity in years and strength I sliced it easily through the Mong tribe until their blood weighted me. I released Simon from the tree and suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder. With a deliberate force I turned and brought my sword around to decapitate Dread. His body fell to its knees as his head flew off into the forest. His blood was on my hands, the deed on my conscience, the pain in my heart, I had to get away. The rest of the Mong were now throwing their spears at me. Simon had disappeared and my route to Dread's boat was cut off so I headed into the forest and ran with all speed. I could still hear them as I ran and ran and ran until I started to climb a rock face. As I cleared the forest canopy I looked up and saw that it was a volcano, I didn't know what to do, whether I could climb it, but I kept going until I reached the rim of the crater, almost exhausted to death. I look back and the Mong were still chasing. I let them come within spear distance before realising that this time I was going to die one way or another. They slowed, and paced slowly the last yards towards me with their spears in front of them. I looked into the volcano shielding my face from the heat and started to skirt the lip carefully hoping to reach the other side, not looking back for a moment. A rope of vine landed on my shoulders and tightened around my neck. I lost balance and felt the ground crumble away and I fell into the crater hanging by the vine. I looked up and one by one those ugly little faces appeared around the rim, laughing loudly and waving their tongues at me. The vine strangled as they hauled me up and I remembered my grandfather's hand cutting the vine with faith. I brought my sword up with all remaining strength and severed the vine, breaking me free and plummeting me into the volcano. I seemed to fall for ever as I watched the bubbling red lava frothing below and then I splashed heavily but not into the molten rock but into water. My sword was lost and I struggled frantically to make sense of it all and reached the surface only to find myself, yet again, in a sea, bobbing insanely miles from anywhere. I knew I hadn't the strength to stay afloat for a moment longer but I fought every second and then a sea creature winded me and I realised I was actually riding piggy back on a giant turtle. A night and a day later I caught sight of a boat and the turtle carried me towards it. I could see it was called The Argo. Someone threw a rope over the side and I climbed up to the deck to meet a chubby bearded man puffing away on a clay pipe. "Greetings fellow avatar 187953, I am Captain Proteus of The Argo, we will soon be docking in the Island of Kymer, take this map of the city of Phantasus and can I list your name in our register now?" "Yes do, my name is ... my name is Dread." {!} - The Witching Hour - {!} By Witchy Indigo Water ------------ Indigo is made from a plant. It used to be one of the principal ingredients in blue dyes and in laundry blueing. As it was a fairly rare and expensive commodity it quickly gained a magical reputation. Pieces of indigo were carried as good luck charms, and indigo began to be used for all sorts of things. Indigo does have certain useful properties, and it was the discovery of these properties which gave the material its initial reputation. As a dye, and as a color, indigo has the ability to strengthen the astral nature of anything to which it is applied. Natural indigo (or the color indigo from natural sources) will act faster in this respect than an aniline dye of the same color. This is because of the greater harmony of the natural dye with the natural flow of the universal life force. The astral world is fed by those things which affect the human senses. Thus, color, scent, flavor, and texture are, or may be regarded, as foods to the astral realm. This is one of the reasons why physical offerings are made to the forces of the universe, and these forces are known as gods to their worshippers. Indigo water is made from ordinary household blueing, either dissolved or diluted with tap water. The powdered blueing will settle on stand- ing, so the bottle must be shaken before each use. If it is impossible to find blueing, which is fast going out of style in this age of wash-and-wear, blue food coloring may be used. An intense blue color is what is required in the bottle of Indigo Blue Water. Using Indigo Blue Water ----------------------- Indigo Blue Water is used to strengthen and add power to charms of all sorts. A few drops of the water are placed on the charm and spread over it before the charm is prayed over. The water is allowed to evaporate from the charm, or to be absorbed by it. This treatment will strengthen the astral field of the charm, and allow it to accept a greater charge of emotional energy from the magician when it is charged by prayer. Indigo Blue Water Baths ----------------------- Indigo Blue Water is very useful in baths for it strengthens the aura and, thus, the astral body. When it is used for this purpose it is used in a soaking bath. The individual taking the bath should relax in the tub for about twenty minutes. About one to three tablespoons of Indigo Blue Water is added to the tub for this bath. For the best effect, the person taking the bath should submerge completely in the bath several times. Other Uses for Indigo Blue Water -------------------------------- Indigo Blue Water is frequently used in conjunction with sea water to balance the energy flow. To balance your energy, it is applied to your spinal column following a thorough spiritual cleansing. A mixture of Indigo Water and sea water is frequently found on the altar of practitioners of a number of magico-religious practices. Those who keep this symbol do so as an obligation or a duty, it is not done as a casual act. The fact that you see someone do it does not mean that you should follow their example. Flower and Fruit Waters ----------------------- Flower and fruit waters may be made from flower petals and fruit peelings by the cold method. The flowers or fruit peelings are placed in water and left in the refrigerator for a week or so. If you wish to keep these waters you should add vodka to retard spoilage. Water will accept the vibrations of most flowers and fruits, but not much of the scent will pass into the water. Usually there is enough of the quality present to allow the water to be used magically, but there is insufficient scent to allow its use as perfume. Once the flower petals or fruit peelings have served their purpose in making the water they should be strained out and discarded. There are three favorite waters in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking which may be used directly as flower waters. They have a better quality than the homemade product, and are usually more effective when they are used as sprays. These are rose water, orange water, and orris water. In some cases lemon and lime waters can also be purchased, but these are considerably more difficult to locate. Once you can identify the effects of fruit and flower essences you can make up your own. The essences make a useful spray in the home, sprayed from an ordinary "spritzer" spray bottle. Until you can identify the effects of a spray by the vibration, you are better off using only the sprays mentioned here. Rose Water ---------- Will act to purify any place where it is sprayed or used as a floor- wash. It will act to remove some thoughtforms or heavy vibrations. It can make a home a lighter place to live in. It is not a cure-all, however, and will neither remove heavy thoughtforms nor break curses. Orange Water ------------ This water smells a bit like orange blossoms - the traditional wedding flower. It acts to encourage the display of emotions, which is useful if the emotions displayed are positive! It is good to use if you are expecting company for a dinner or a party. Orris Water ----------- Used to promote communication between people. It is best sprayed into the air before a gathering takes place. Its effect as a floorwash is not very lasting. It seems to act to encourage people to speak their minds on any subject, and can be useful for preparing conference rooms and meeting halls. Lemon Water ----------- Brings a refreshing and stimulating feeling to the place where it is sprayed. It can also suppress those who talk to much. Lime Water ---------- Lime water calms places where an excess of energy is present. It is useful in a children's playroom as a spray or a floorwash. It has only a temporary effect, but it can assist you in getting children to bed on time if you spray the room while they are having dinner. There is a commercial lime water which is available which is not made from the lime, and it will not have the same effect. Be sure you make your own water from the fruit of the lime. Rose and Orris Water -------------------- For parties and social occasions a spray made from rose and orris water will make the occasion a bit more festive. It lightens the vibrations and makes people a bit more communicative. The Cold Herbal Tea Method -------------------------- In order to make a cold herbal tea you need a clean jar with a fairly wide mouth, such as a mason jar. Fill the jar with the fresh herbs or flowers, but don't pack them down tightly. Once the jar is filled with herbs, add sufficient tap or spring water to fill the jar within an inch or so of its top. All the herbs should be under the water. Place the filled bottle in the refrigerator or some other cool place for a week. If the mixture was made for use as a sprinkle it is now ready. If you want to store the herb tea, you can either strain out the herbs or leave them in. You should add a few ounces of vodka in any event, as it assists in retarding spoilage. If you have made the herbal mixture by the cold process for a bath, you should use the bath as soon as possible after the tea is ready, but do not add vodka. Alcohol of any kind has an effect of its own in a bath, and is best kept away from any bath you might take. Using any alcohol beverage in a bath will encourage many people to drink alcohol. The Hot Herbal Tea Method ------------------------- Bring about ten or twelve ounces of water to a boil in an iron or stainless steel pot. A ceramic pot can be used, but aluminum pots should be avoided. Add the pieces of root bark or seeds, and allow the mixture to simmer for ten to fifteen minutes at a low boil. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. You can strain out the pieces of root bark or seeds by passing the liquid through cheesecloth or a tea strainer. If the liquid is going to be stored for any length of time, two or three ounces of vodka should be added to retard spoilage. To make a tea of flowers or dried herbs you would bring the ten or twelve ounces of water to a boil in the same way. Use an iron, stainless, or ceramic pot to boil the water, as you did for the root and bark. When you use flowers or dried leaves, you pour the boiling water over about a teaspoon of the dried or ground herb in a bowl. Allow the mixture to stand and steep until it reaches room temperature. The solids may be strained out with cheesecloth or a tea strainer, and the finished tea can be bottled for storage if desired. Add about two ounces of vodka to each eight ounces (or cup) of the finished herbal tea. In most cases it is advisable to make up only as much of the tea as you will need within the next few months. Most of these preparations do not store well, even with the addition of vodka (or other alcohol) as a preservative. When you open a bottle of herbal tea and are assailed by an odor of decay it is best to close it up again and discard the entire mixture, bottle and all. It may not seem obvious, but the essential quality of a product will usually pass to its most negative form through the action of bacteria. In short, this means that if the tea has spoiled, don't use it, for you may make a harmful situation rather than a cure. The reason for using iron or ceramic pots is not obvious until you recall that aluminum is not a natural metal. Iron and stainless steel occur in nature. Passing energy through them in the form of heat transmits the virtue of Mars, the planetary ruler of iron, to the material being boiled or to the water being heated. Ceramics are also naturally occurring material, and pyrex-type products are the modern cousins of the clay pots made by our ancestors. Heat energy is not distorted when it passes through these materials. Treat herbs with respect and they will give you the same considera- tion. You are working with their non-physical properties when you work with herbs magically. Your ability to work with them at all is a gauge of your ability to feel their essence at work, for you recognize that they are a part of the same divine creation which you inhabit. Blessed * Be {!} - How Garion and Ce'Nedra arrived in Kymer - {!} By Ce'Nedra Chapter Two Garion was excited. He had at last plucked up the courage to do want he always wanted; he had put in his request to join the ISE (Intergalactic Space Exploration) and had been accepted. He could hardly believe it. He had the letter of acceptance in his hand! It said they were always ready to accept people from Krikkit because of the "special contributions" they can make. He didn't understand this bit; all he knew was it was a dream come true. He still had to face his father, but he felt strong and he was now old enough to go his own way. Since Garion's cousin Ardrin had come to stay with them, Garion had noticed that his father had taken quite a shine to him. He was far better at doing what is necessary to run a farm, something that Garion never really did very well. But there was one thing that he felt sad about: Ce'Nedra. Over the past few years he had watched her grow up and she was becoming a very beautiful woman. He loved their times together at night and she had told him that she did too. He resented the way her father treated her, and often thought about standing up to him. He knew, of course, that this would be disastrous. Krikkit society is built around the family, and the father has to be obeyed. It is a crime to interfere with this structure, and the punishment is banishment to the area of the planet know as the "Shadow Zone". Due to the strange rotation of the planet, a kind of wobble, a part of the planet lives in a perpetual state of dawn. The sun stays just below the horizon, never rising or falling. This mysterious place is the main theme around many Krikkit stories and legends. It does mean of course that other parts of the planet get more than their fair share of sunlight. These areas are owned by the Empire and produce the best harvest on the planet. Most of the people on Krikkit, including Garion and Ce'Nedra, live in the area between these two zones which has a better balance between day and night but struggles to compete with the Empire for grain production. When Ce'Nedra arrived on the hill that night, Garion was nowhere to be seen. She was very sad that he wasn't there but realised that this could be because the night was dull and overcast. It was not the kind of clear night they usually enjoyed together. She was feeling very depressed, very much like the time she had first met Garion three years ago. She picked their favourite spot, sat down and began to sing one of her songs. It was the same song that her father had beaten her for singing years ago. She had invented the tune herself, but she had discovered words on an old stone tablet in the ruined temple of Mor-fus. She did not understand the words but she thought they were so beautiful. As she sang, a strange thing happened. Slowly the clouds lifted and parted, the stars started to shine brighter than ever. The whole galaxy seemed to come alive. It was so clear she felt she could see infinitely. Then the stars swirled around and around forming a whirlpool and she felt herself losing consciousness. Garion stared out of his bedroom window. He could see strange glow over Konta Hill and the night was clear and still, not at all like the cloudy night it had been a few minutes earlier. He decided to inves- tigate and as he approached the hill, he saw a strange, glowing shape hovering above the ground near his favourite spot. As he neared, he realised it was Ce'Nedra! She was hovering about six feet off the ground, unconscious, and she was bent over backwards as if some invisible force was pulling her upwards from the middle. All around her was the strange glow. There was no sense of danger, just peace. As he got level with her; suddenly there was a snap, the glow disappeared and she began to fall. Garion dived forward and caught her before she hit the ground. How light she was, thought Garion. He watched her slowly regain consciousness. She opened her eyes and, on seeing Garion, smiled. It was then he realised that he was in love with Ce'Nedra. "You came," she whispered. "Yes, but what's happened here?" replied Garion. "I had a dream about a world full of strange people. Some had heads of dogs, cats, ducks, and other animals, and they were brightly coloured. They spent their days chatting and playing games and everybody seemed very happy". He put her down and they sat on the grass. Garion told Ce'Nedra of how he found her and also of his exciting news. She told him about what her father had said. They both sat in a confused silence for a while. "What am I going to do?" asked Ce'Nedra, "I don't want to be married to that person. I want to ..." her voice trailed off. "I don't know," Garion replied, "but there is one thing for sure; I will not join the ISE. I cannot leave you to this awful fate." "But you must!" she cried, "It's your lifetime dream. You must go. It won't be that bad for mem really. It was just a shock, that's all." "No! My mind is made up." Then after a brief pause he continued, "I think we should investigate the tablets you saw in the old temple. Can you get off work tomorrow?" "Yes I'm sure. My father has to go into the next village to see a friend. I will not be missed," encouraged Ce'Nedra. "Good," Garion was pleased, "The temple is four hours walk, so meet me here in the morning and bring some supplies for our journey." Saying this, Garion kissed Ce'Nedra softly on her cheek and walked back to his father's farm with a look of determination on his face. Esta semana les traigo un cuento de el autor puertorriqueno Jose Luis Gonzalez: En el fondo del cano hay un negrito La primera vez que el negrito Macarin vio al otro negrito en el fondo del cano fue temprano en la manana del tercer o cuarto dia despues de la mudanza, cuando llego gateando hasta la unica puerta de la nueva vivienda y se asomo y miro hacia la quieta superficie del agua alla abajo. Entonces el padre, que acababa de despertar sobre el monton de sacos vacios extendidos en el piso, junto a la mujer semi-desnuda que aun dormia, le grito: -Mire..., eche p'adentro! Diantre'e muchacho desinquieto! Y Macarin, que no habia aprendido a entender las palabras pero si a obedecer los gritos, gateo otra vez hacia adentro y se quedo silencioso en un rincon, chupandose un dedito porque tenia hambre. El hombre se incorporo sobre los codos. Miro a la mujer que dormia a su lado y la sacudio flojamente por un brazo. La mujer desperto sobresaltada, mirando al hombre con ojos de susto. El hombre se rio. Todas las mananas era igual: la mujer despertaba con aquella cara de susto que a el le provocaba una gracia sin maldad. La primera vez que el le vio aquella cara de susto a la mujer no fue en un despertar, sino la noche que se acostaron juntos por primera vez. Quiza por eso al el le provocaba gracia verla salir asi del sueno todas las mananas. El hombre se sento sobre los sacos vacios. -Bueno-se dirigio entonces a ella-. Cuela el cafe. La mujer tardo un poco en contestar: -No queda. -Ah? -No queda. Se acabo ayer. El casi empezo a decir: "Y por que no compraste mas?", pero se interrumpio cuando vio que la mujer empezaba a poner aquella otra cara, la cara que a el no le hacia gracia y que ella solo ponia cuando el le hacia preguntas como esa. La primera vez que el le vio esa cara a la mujer fue la noche que regreso borracho y deseoso de ella y se le fue encima, pero la borrachera no le dojo hacer nada. Quiza por eso a el no le guataba verle aquella cara a la mujer. -Conque se acabo ayer? -Aja. La mujer se puso de pie y empezo a meterse el vestido por la cabeza. El hombre, todavia sentado sobre los sacos vacios, derroto su mirada y la fijo por un rato en los agujeros de su camiseta. Macarin cansado ya de la insipidez del dedo, se dedico a llorar. El hombre lo miro y pregunto a la mujer: -Tampoco hay na pal nene? -Si... Consegui unas hojitah'e guanabana. Le gua'cer un guarapillo 'horita. -Cuantos dias va que no toma leche? -Leche?-la mujer puso un poco de asombro inconsciente en la voz-. Desde antier. El hombre se paro y se puso los pantalones. Despues se allego a la puerta y miro hacia afuera. Le dijo a la mujer: -La marea 'ta alta. Hoy hay que dir en bote. Luego miro hacia arriba, hacia el puente y la carretera. Automoviles, guaguas y camiones pasaban en un desfile interminable. El hombre sonrio viendo como desde casi todos los vehiculos alguien miraba con extraneza hacia la casucha enclavada en medio de aquel brazo de mar: el "cano" sobre cuyas margenes pantanosas habia ido creciendo hacia anos el arrabal. Ese alguien por lo general empezaba a mirar la casucha cuando el automovil, o la guagua o el camion, llegaba a la mitad del puente, y despues segui mirando, volteando gradualmente la cabeza hasta que el automovil, o la guagua o el camion, tomaba la curva alla adelante. El hombre sonrio. Y despues murmuro: -Pendejos! A pocos se metio en el bote y remo hasta la orilla. De la popa del bote a la puerta de la casa habia una soga larga que permitia a quien quedara en la casa atraer nuevamente el bote hasta la puerta. De la casa a la orilla habia tambien un puentecito de madera que se cubria con la marea alta. Ya en la orilla, el hombre camino hacia la carretera. Se sintio mejor cuando el ruido de los automoviles ahogo el llanto del negrito en la casucha. La segunda vez que el negrito Macarin vio al otro negrito en el fondo del cano fue poco despues del mediodia, cuando volvio a gatear hasta la puerta, y se asomo y miro hacia abajo. Esta vez el negrito en el fondo del cano le regalo una sonrisa a Macarin. Macarin le habia sonreido primero y tomo la sonrisa del otro negrito como una respuesta a la suya. Entonces hizo asi con la manita, y desde el fondo del cano el otro negrito tambien hizo asi con su manita. Macarin no pudo reprimir la risa, y le parecio que tambien desde alla abajo llegaba el sonido de otra risa. La madre lo llamo entonces porque el segundo guarapillo de hojas de guanabana ya estaba listo. Dos mujeres, de las afortunadas que vivian en tierra firme, sobre el fango endurecido de las margenes del cano, comentaban: -Hay que velo. Si me lo 'bieran contao, 'biera dicho qu'ere embuste. -La necesida, dona. A mi misma, quien me 'biera dicho que yo diba llegar aqui. Yo que tenia hasta mi tierrita... -Pueh nojotroh fuimoh de los primeroh. Casi no habia gente y uno cogia la parte mah sequecita, ve? Pero los que llegab ahora, fijese, tienen que tirarse al agua, como quien dice. Pero bueno, y...esa gente, de onde diantre habran salio? -A mi me dijeron que por ai por Isla Verde 'tan orbanisando y han sacao un monton de negros arrimaoh. A lo mejor son d'esoh. -Bendito...! Y uste se ha fijao en el negrito que mono? La mujer vino ayer a ver si yo tenia unas hojitah de algo pa hacerle un guarapillo, y yo le di unas poquitah de guanabana que me quedaban. -Ay, Virgen, bendito...! Al atardecer, el hombre estaba cansado. Le dolia la espalda. Pero venia palpando las monedas en el fondo del bolsillo, haciendolas tintinear, advinando con el tacto cual era un vellon, cual de diez, cual una peseta. Bueno...hoy habia habido suerte. El blanco que paso por el muelle a recoger su mercancia de Nueva York. Y el obrero que le presto su carreton toda la tarde porque tuvo que salir corriendo a buscar a la comadrona para su mujer que estaba achando un pobre mas al mundo. Si, senor. Se va tirando. Manana sera otro dia. Se metio en un colmado y compro cafe y arroz y habichuelas y unas latitas de leche evaporada. Penso en Macarin y apresuro el paso. Se habia venido a pie desde San Juan por no gastar el vellon de la guagua. La tercera vez que el negrito Macarin vio otro negrito en el fondo del cano fue al atardecer, poco antes de que el padre regresara. Esta vez Macarin sonriendo antes de asomarse y le sorprendio que el otro tambien se estuviera sonriendo alla abajo. Volvio a hacer asi con la manita y el otro volvio a contestar. Entonces Macarin sintio un subito entusiasmo y un amor indecible hacia el otro negrito. Y se fue a buscarlo. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! One of the hosts or a special celebrity guest, such as the Publisher of ESP!, Acolyte Brynne, will hide somewhere in Kymer. The object is for the Seeker to find the Hidden. After the host or celebrity guest has hidden, the other host will provide a secret word to the contestants. Contestants may begin to seek only after they have received the secret word, which must be given to the host who is found hiding. The first Seeker to find the Hidden and to say the secret word out loud wins that round. The winner of each round will receive a secret surprise locked inside one of our special Prize Chests. Each chest contains something different, only to be revealed when the Prize Chest is opened. There will be five rounds per week, and an avatar may win only once each week, so every game provides five exciting chances to win a secret surprise! Immediately after his election, Brains began to assess the structure and operations of the Duckolytes in terms of the group's history, mission and purpose. He also examined the histories of other groups in Kymer, and concluded that successful groups have these characteristics: 1. The balance of fun and work is heavily weighted in favor of fun; 2. Pride of belonging and esprit de corps are cultivated among the group members; 3. There are ample opportunities for every member to use his or her talents, aptitudes, and interests for personal benefit, as well as for the benefit of the entire group; 4. Lines of communication are open and clearly-defined; 5. Decision-making is carried from the grass roots up, rather than from the top down. 6. Responsibilities and lines of authority are documented, rather than carried around in the head of the group leader; 7. Roles and responsibilities are well-defined and fairly distri- buted; 8. Group processes are fair, equitable, and use a team approach; 9. Everyone has the opportunity to learn and to grow while having fun; 10. Opportunities for advancement are fairly and equally distributed; 11. All members are aware of leadership opportunities; 12. All members are encouraged to develop and to exercise their leadership potential; 13. Group leaders are selected by the members, and team leaders are selected and trained by the group leaders; 14. Leaders are accountable to their team members and to the members of the group; 15. There are well-defined, fair procedures for selecting group leaders and team leaders. During April, Brains discussed these characteristics of successful groups with the leadership and the membership of the Duckolytes. The group decided that a written Constitution and Bylaws should be drafted and submitted to the membership for approval. During the week of May 12, each member was sent the draft documents by Email and was asked for a Yea or Nay vote on adoption of each document. The new Consti- tution and Bylaws have now been approved by the membership, and will be uploaded to the Forum. The Constitution authorizes a new group name, The Krewe of the Duckolytes and formalizes the mission, goals, and purpose of the group. It formalizes the membership structure and also provides for a new governing body, the Council of the Krewe, consisting of the Wing Commander (formerly Arch Duckolyte), Immediate Past Wing Commander, and Senior Wings (formerly Senior Chiefs). This Council is respon- sible for carrying out the mission of the Krewe, and for making the policy decisions necessary to implement the Constitution and Bylaws. The Constitution also provides for semiannual meetings of the member- ship of the Krewe for the purpose of gathering membership input and review of the policy decisions made by the Council of the Krewe. Beginning in 1997, annual elections of the Wing Commander and Senior Wings will take place at the May meeting of the Krewe. The Bylaws create a number of standing committees, to be called Floats, and provide for subcommittees, called Paddles. Temporary committees, Formations, may also be formed at the discretion of the Wing Commander or of the Council. In addition to the line responsi- bilities held by the Wing Commander, Senior Wings, and Wings (formerly Chiefs) who supervise the activities of the Floats, two new staff positions have been created: the Wing Liaison Officer, who works with other groups in Kymer, and the Wing Special Projects, who performs tasks delegated by the Wing Commander and the Council. The Bylaws also contain the Krewe's election procedure, campaign rules, limitations on campaign expenses, and a new code of conduct for members of the Krewe. Our new structure not only gives the Krewe of the Duckolytes direction for growth, but creates numerous exciting opportunities for members. We are certain that the defined structure with its emphasis on fun and on good citizenship will keep the Krewe afloat and the flock in fine feather for a long time to come. {!} - The Duckolyte Shell Game - {!} by Brains, Wing Commander The Duckolyte Shell Game is coming to Kymer. The game will be hosted by Brains, Wing Commander, and will be held out of the Duckolyte turf known as "Duck Hunt". We are firming up schedules with the helpers now, but it looks like we will be having this event in two weeks. The following is an outline of the event. Please watch for more details on this shortly. Objectives of the Game ----------------------- Be the first to TAG (Click on them and choose the selection FOLLOW) the Duckolyte with the lockable chest. The Follow command allows the Duckolyte tag to be able to tell, in the case of more then one avatar tagging them, who tagged first. If that Duckolyte is the one with the special lockable chest, then the first one to tag them wins the prize inside, and will get to see what is in there, after they bring it back to the starting gates. Rules of the game and game play -------------------------------- All players and duckolytes start from one area, that is also the regroup area for the end of the game. The duckolytes start on the ground, showing off the chests and passing them from one to the other. This gives the ghosted players a chance to see which duckolytes are to be hunted down in the Duckolyte Hunt if you will. There will be one Master of Ceremony for the game, with an assistant, taking down the names of all those who are playing. Names will be taken as they arrive, and placed in wave groups, with the first arrivals getting the chance to go out and search faster then those who arrive late. This is not only to insure that the players arrive on time, but also to help crowd control. One Master of Ceremony on the ground, would mean five avatars per wave. The Master of Ceremony will have a written record of who is playing, in what wave and will make sure players are NOT blocking ESP so they can be called in, by the Master of Ceremony and helper, at the end of the game. One of the Duckolyte Helpers will pull a Lockable Chest out of the Master chest to use in each race. Only the Master of Ceremony will know the contents of the Chests. This will insure a random selection of the prizes. When all is ready, the Master shouts Go! and the chosen Duckolytes pocket their chest or chests and head out into the wilds of the city. Then the Master of Ceremony reiterates the rules of play, (giving the chosen ones time to get lost) and starts to call the waves down. They are called down in order, Wave 1 being first, and after the Master of Ceremony has verified that all members are there, he sends them out to the hunt. This part is what insures that the avatars do not simply follow the duckolytes out. You know they are there at the start of the race, as they have to BECOME AN AVATAR to screen before they can start to race. A simple STATUS check of WHO'S HERE will verify we have them and their names right. Then, we wait for the chosen one to announce that he's been caught which is the signal for the Master of Ceremony and helper to start ESPing all to return to the start point for the opening of the trunk and the viewing of the prize. Multiple waves using two groups of helpers may be used to expedite the game play and increase the viewing pleasure. Chosen Duckolytes can: 1. Pass off the winning trunk to another chosen duckolyte 2. Hide behind other avatars 3. Change their colors to disguise themselves - or even heads if you wish to allow this (we will make sure the avatars are aware of this) They can not: 1. Hide in changing rooms 2. Remain ghosted - if they are forced to ghost, they must move to another location and unghost as soon as possible 3. Block Following unless tagged 4. Talk with avatars telling them they have the chest When a Duckolyte is tagged, they may block following. Then they an- nounce who tagged them first, and announce if that person is the winner or not. If they are not the winner, that person has to remain on the ground, until the duckolyte ghosts. The duckolyte is allowed, once tagged, to move to a different locale, not more then two to three regions away, and then can unghost, make sure following is enabled and continue with the game. Grand Shell Game Champion ------------------------- The twenty winners from each of the early rounds are assembled into four waves for four more races. The winners from these races will have a shot at the Grand Prize simply by winning their race. The Grand Prize will be inside one of the remaining chests.The four winners will be assembled for the opening of these winning chests. Only one will contain the very special prize being sought after by everyone. {!} - Wedding Announcement - {!} by Brains, Wing Commander It is with great joy and pleasure that I announce my marriage to Mufasa. We eloped very late the night of 5/10/96 with the help of Acolyte Cerchen. The actual WA date/time was 5/9/96 at 10:15 p.m. WAT. The date/time for the happy couple was 5/10/96, 1:15 a.m. (EST) for Brains, 6:15 a.m. (GMT) for Mufasa. Many thanks to Acolyte Zippy for helping as well. We didn't want all of the fanfare that goes tradi- tionally with a formal wedding, and feel we have most everything we need. We plan to have a big party in a couple of weeks, after the honeymoon is over (if it is ever truly over). We are taking a long honeymoon to get our life together, off to a great start. We believe it is off to a wonderful start already. For anyone who is surprised by this or is wondering. We are crazy about each other, and head over heels in love with one another. We were more interested in *being married than *getting* married, which is why we chose this course. Overall, I find Mufasa to be stimulating intellectually, emotionally engaging, and a lot of fun to be with. It was time for the Wing Commander to settle down, and his favorite lioness was there for him. Good thing that ducks and lions can live together peacefully. {!} - Duckolyte Ghost Races - {!} by Brains, Wing Commander Duckolyte Ghost Racing entered its second week of the month with LumMoose, Duckolyte Sr. Wing trying his hand at hosting the races. In a world filled with bad news, it's always a joy to bring some good news to light. Our story begins on April 29. Our heroine, Sunray StarLight, was meeting with a newbie and had decided that he deserved a gift. She said, "I had very strong feelings the newbie I had just met was a very special person." Not having a turf at the time, she decided to use one of the changing rooms at V-mart to set down her chest to retrieve the item. Unfortunately, at the very moment she did this, disaster struck. WA shut down. This story could easily end here, in tragedy, but there is more to hear. Frantic over her loss, StarLight quickly went to the WA Community forum, and found Clover. After hearing about StarLight's misfortune, Clover immediately notified all available Sunrays. After waiting a nervous twenty minutes for WA to come back up, StarLight came inworld and discovered SR Mage Cybermage holding her lost chest! He had gotten the story from Clover, and rushed to the chest's location as soon as he could. Needless to say, StarLight was extremely grateful. Now *that* is what I call family spirit, everyone! It's things like this that make me proud to be a member of the Sunrays. A special 'attaboy award goes to SR Mage Cybermage for preventing the theft of StarLight's belongings. {!} - Hierophant Origin Story - {!} by Hierophant Srk Phred didn't have fantasies. All he had were pale, gray thoughts; about schoolwork, or his sister's nagging. He felt good when he watched TV, but those were other people's fantasies. When he turned off the TV, Phred was back in the dull drums of his mind. One night he lay in bed, tired of the dullness. "In the old times, people prayed," Phred thought. Then he said out loud, "If anyone can help me, please give me my own fantasies." He slept, and in his dream, the drums of his thoughts turned into thunder. Flashes of lightening revealed a land where thoughts were free, where he could flit into the clouds, be anyone he wanted to be. It was a land without schoolwork or nagging, a land of fantasy, and he was part of that fantasy. That dream changed his life. From that day on, his thoughts were like parrots, singing and soaring on colorful wings. When his sister spoke, the words turned into music in his ears. Schoolwork became a giant jigsaw puzzle which gave him endless pleasure. His thoughts soared higher and higher. To celebrate the infinite freedom of the awakening dream, Phred decided to call himself "Higher O Fantasy!" (or Hierophant, for short). {!} - SRS: What does that stand for? - {!} by Maggie Moon I walk along the streets of Kymer, usually with a smile on my face (normal looks stupid) and many of the fellow Avatars I meet ask, "Maggie, what does SRS stand for?" Well, I'll tell you. I remember the night I first put those initials on my name. I was nervous, jittery, (I did a Newbie turn) all because I had a beautiful ceremony to be inducted into the SunRay Knights. So, you ask, what does SRS have to do with that? Many have seen SrK for SunRay Knight, but not SRS. I of course (not one to like titles) decided that this would be different. It stands for SunRay Sister. I then explain what the SunRays are to those who are newer, and get many different reactions from those who are not so new. Although many people expect something else, I have had quite a few laughs over what people have guessed it to be. Sony Resolution System - from an avatar with a TV head Somebody Really Special - from a friend Se.... Reassignment Surgery - fill in the blanks there She's Really Sorry - don't ask She's Really Stupid (and/or) Simple - sounds cruel but I can be at times There are some I can't even remember now. So that's me...Maggie Moon SunRay Sister, I also hope those who don't like to type long names appreciate it. When I first came to Worlds Away my name was Margarita Moonlite, and too many people complained it was too long. So I used the K.I.S.S. principle, (keep it simple stupid) and shortened it. That's another reason for the initials, short and to the point. To all those who asked and to all those who provided new meanings, it has been fun. Nice to have an eye catching name, with a bit of mystery. So, next time you see me on the streets say hello, I'll be pleased to meet you. {!} - The Poetry and Storytelling Guild - {!} by Sunray Dream Keeper After seeing our guild get off to a FANTASTIC start (thanks to so many of YOU who have eagerly participated in our many events), Kethrey and I slowed things down for a couple weeks to give everyone time to relax as well as to reflect on what changes might be made to enhance future events! During this time, Kethrey and I have had a chance to meet and we have put together a schedule of events that will help carry us thru most of June. We'd love for you to take part in any of the activities that interest you! Remember that we are always looking for cohosts to assist with awarding gifts, keeping locales full and just plain joining in to make the events more fun for everyone. Novitiate Level Update ---------------------- For those of you who have chosen to complete your novitiate level tasks, many of the upcoming events will provide great opportunities to complete some of the necessary steps for this level. Remember to let Kethrey and I know if you plan to complete a task at an event so we can be sure to record that you have completed that step. Also, if you wish to assist as a cohost, please email us *ahead of time* so we can coordinate this with you. So many of you have done such a great job of jumping right in to accomplish the novice level tasks! Your enthusiasm has been a joy to see and it has been quite a pleasure to get to meet and work with you. Poetry and Storytelling Guildhall Opens --------------------------------------- Please be sure to stop by our new guildhall and say hello! Kethrey and I would like to hold a guildhall get-together to celebrate the new locale. We will be announcing a date and time soon and hope each of you can drop by to visit! Guild Meeting Forthcoming ------------------------- Kethrey and I have discussed the possibility of holding a guild meeting inworld. We think it might be a nice time to hear from you in person to discuss your many ideas in a live format with the input of many members rather than just via email. She still feels about the same as she did in the hospital, but this is another step on the road to full recovery. You may try sending "get well" email to her directly again. Her In-Basket has not filled up lately which is another sign she is feeling better. Please join me in wishing her continued recovery with her health while remembering she is still not 100% back to normal. Tarot Readings! by LaJolla I am offering in-world tarot readings to interested avatars for a reasonable price, starting at just 25 T for a basic three card reading, or on a sliding scale if needed. I currently use the Moon Garden Tarot, a beautiful Tarot deck focused on the feminine energies of the moon. Readings can be tailored to your time, questions/interest, and how much you would like to spend (i.e., longer, more complex readings would cost more). I encourage you to give this a try. All readings would be through ESP if privacy is desired and your confidentiality is assured. I hope you'll give it a try and will find Tarot to be fun, informative, and insightful. To make an appointment for a specific time, either weekends any time or weeknights after 5 p.m. WAT, send me an e-mail with possible times and we will arrange it. Otherwise you can approach me in-world for an impromptu reading or to make a time for later. But please don't interrupt if I'm playing a game such as Worlds of Fortune (my favorite) or Kymer or such. If you ESP and I don't answer you right away, that's probably why. :) The Phantasus Yellow Pages For the most complete listing of inworld businesses, and the ONLY single listing of resident avatars, check out the WorldsAway Yellow & White Pages! Once the Editor has received everything for an issue, eight to ten hours of actual work hours later, the issue is ready for uploading by mid- afternoon Sunday. Writers can help reduce some of this time by following these tips. 1. ESP! does not place article titles in all caps; we initial cap the main words of an article title. Most of our writers submit their articles with their titles in all caps; to clean this up, the Editor must change it to lower case and then initial cap the main words. Writers: help us save a little time by typing your titles in initial caps only (main words: not words like "a", "the" when used within the title, "by", etc.) Along these lines, it is not necessary to include the {!} - before and after your article title or try to center it. In the conversion to ASCII text for retrieval into WordPerfect 5.1, the attempt to center the title becomes blank spaces which need to be deleted because the title is not really centered. Type your title flush left and your byline underneath it. The Editor will run her macro which will center the title, add the {!} - and - {!}, move to the next line and center the byline. 2. ESP! doublespaces between paragraphs and does not use tabbed indents for the main body of the article. These are flush left. Lists within an article may be indented or tabbed. Articles submitted that are single spaced between paragraphs and tabbed in one tab position at the beginning of the next paragraph require major cleanup. Once saved as ASCII text, these tabs become spaces which must be manually removed. Because some of the gaming reports include tabbed lists of winners and items won (which in ASCII become spaces), a global search and replace of spaces cannot be done. If this is done, then the gaming reports must be totally reformatted, replacing all the spaces with tabs or putting the deleted spaces back in for the lists to line up properly. 3. If you have subheadings within your article, do not type them all in upper case. Type them in initial caps and underscore them with the dashes like this: Subheading ---------- [Begin text here] 4. Use the ellipsis (three periods) correctly. The proper use of the ellipsis is [word][space]...[space][word]. The ellipsis is used between a sentence and a phrase, not between two full sentences, and the periods within the ellipsis do not have spaces in between. In quotes from other sources, the ellipsis is also used to designate that text has been removed. Too often, writers pepper their articles with multiple periods in between sentences.......Like this. A very careful search and replace must be done because we do not want to remove a period where one properly belongs. 5. Event Listings: once we get an Events Coordinator on staff, s/he will be grateful if hosts submitting events will follow this format so we can more easily conform it to our schedule format: Day and Date Time Name of Event (not in all caps; initial capped) Location (if in a turf, indicate Turf Address: [name]) Host's Name Description of event (keep to a maximum of 100 words) Submitting a listing that looks like this: EVENT NAME, MONDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY TIME DESCRIPTION HOST'S NAME requires us to retype this to conform to our Event Schedule format. Please help us save some time by submitting it as indicated above. We will put in the leader dots on the second line between the location and the host's name. 6. Above all, proofread your article before submitting it. A spellcheck is run on all articles but words like "here" and "hear" will not be caught because they are both legitimate words. So make sure your words are spelled correctly. Every article submitted is read carefully and whatever grammatical, spelling and other changes necessary are made; but making these corrections can get very time consuming and delays the production of ESP! Think of these as Writers' Guidelines for ESP! They're not cast in stone and we won't reject a submission because it doesn't conform to our guidelines. ESP! needs all the original articles it can get! But anything our writers can do to help us spend less time in the actual production of ESP! to gives us *more* time to search for authors to provide us with original stories and other articles would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you! !}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}!}
