More Than A Sounding Board - {} By Maggie Moon What a world of *phantastic* talent we Kymerians have here, disguised as a sounding board, meaning much more. Dreams, emotions, friendships, troubles and happiness, are all abundantly expressed within the pages here. I sense the parallel of thoughts and many an experience, mirrored through another Avatar's eyes and penmanship. I can come to know those I've not met, (but wish I could) only because limited time denied the circumstance. Newbies to Oldies are voiced, whatever the reason the story is told, tales of frustration, appreciation, humiliation, friendship and fear. I read about stories from outrageous attacks, to weddings and social events. The talent lies within, and is but a reflection of the dreams we unfold. The cost you ask for such a rare and priceless find? Not even one token, does it cost to share, needs only your honest thoughtful time, to read or write and say what's on your mind. {} - MarvL's Raid Downunder- {} By Atillo The Hun, President Inconsistent Anarchists While reading about Evergreen's mission to Komytee island in one of Kymer's newer publications, I was struck by the lack of information about MarvL's activities during his LearJet flight to my fortress in Oz. Knowing that you and the other Inconsistent Anarchists will be worried about me I am writing this to fill in all the details. As you know my main defenses against the anti-EGGNOG forces are the large distance between Oz and Kymer and the battery of flamethrowers mounted in the walls of my castle. I recently had these upgraded, BTW, when the Ethereal Elves fitted their special hair-triggers to all of them. I tell you what, those Elves may not be very inconsistent, but boy are they anarchic! But that's another story. Having conquered the defence of distance with his Lear jet, no doubt purchased with the profits of newspaper sales and the warrant system, MarvL disembarked and proceeded to strut around outside my gatehouse. (Warning: the following reference will only be understood by obsessive forum readers with eidetic memories) For some reason he also kept waving his jacket around and yelling 'Ole!' "Surrender now, you antipodean anarchist with no understanding of precedent law", MarvL yelled when his weaponry was in place. Luckily I have been reading Max Raven's Big Book of Witty Retorts for All Occasions so I was able to come back immediately with "Bugger off, you big-nosed twit!" Unimpressed by this exchange MarvL marched back and fired a volley from his flamethrowers. This set off the hair-triggers on my flamethrowers and it was on for young and old. The battle can be summarized as follows: Effects on the fortress of Atillo: none. Having built my walls out of the purest intransigence, no flame ever gets through them. Effects on MarvL: none. Every miss by my flamethrowers was greeted with screams and jeers, every hit by total silence and an attitude that nothing of consequence had happened, even when his clothes were on fire. Final score: 0-0 draw. MarvL flew back to his island to work on a new plan, the rest has been published already. {} - Dread's Spot - {} NewbieNews By Dread Hi to all. If you've been following this spot, you'll have a thesis already maturing in your mind about WorldsAway. We've discussed past and present so now let us stab a few thoughts at the future. Let's build on our knowledge by taking a look at research and development trends and find out if we really can unveil the future. If you stretch your imagination just a little, it's easy to envisage what Kymer will be like tomorrow. We've explored the scope of play and skirted its boundaries. Finally realised that it's what we do in the dreamscape and not so much where we can go that's interesting; it's who we talk and make friends with and not just the events we participate in, and we've felt the mag- netism of addiction as we begin to worry more about our CIS bill than hanging around long enough to acquire tokens. Our own future is always uncertain, but virtual communities are certain and predestined. What then can we expect from FCT ? Let's start by summing up what we already know about cyberspace WorldsAway and Virtual Reality so that our peek can be an accurate assessment from an informed point of view. The concept of fusing computers and VR has been around since the late 1960s but nothing came of it until the 1980's when the U.S. military in unison with NASA started to research its possibilities. When organisations research ideas, such as in the building of prototypes etc, they generally like to test for all sorts of wacky things and this often generates spoils or leftovers. It was these that seeped from the military's research and into our own lives via the computer. The involvement of industry is a vital ingredient in carrying any potentially useful technology forward and this is where FCT slots in neatly with the internet. For example, If General Motors hadn't needed to use Computer Aided Design where would we be today in relation to computer graphics, certainly somewhere in the past. In 1989 the Fujitsu Corporation introduced plans for a long term commitment in VR research. Howard Rheingold was directly involved and is a leading authority on Virtual reality but more relevant to us, his interests span to the incorporation of culture. This means that his vision is far removed from just the technicalities of the medium but reaches toward the ultimate goal. His views are well respected, and his question : "Ultimately it is a theatrical medium, and the question is can you create a first person experience?" We've come a long way since then, and FCT still holds the template for development, but probably a safer reason for trusting FCT to come through for us is the fact that it is a Japanese company. Its long term commitments are rooted in its culture; Japan has Virtual Reality ingrained as part of its industrial policy, whereas the U.S., for example, does not have an industrial policy as such. This confirms that true interactivity is always in fore of mind at FCT research & development. WA will become three dimensional where the graphical environment will surround us and interact with us by use of a head mounted display unit, special goggles or whatever. Sooner will come digital video and sound environments which are already feasible additions requiring only multimedia extensions from the user. There are just so many things that could be done and so many user factors to consider that agendas have to be rigorously designed and followed without distraction of researching and implementing every possibility. Listening to Oracle Vaserius by Cupid's statue this week, it was clear when referring to inworld improvements, that they are in the pipeline. We can already do all of what Rheingold envisaged. We can arrive in a digital world, we can take our point of view and interact with others, and we can interact with objects by picking them up and manipulating them. This is the two dimensional vision of course and Rheingold's was really leaning towards three dimensional and totally immersible graphics - still, the foundations are already laid in what we are experiencing today. Everyone seems to be talking about turfs these day. On the streets some say that it is being beta tested right now, some that it's still very much in early development, and others that it is ready but FCT plans to hold it until an appropriate time for release. Well, I think I'll go with the first rumor as even Compuserve seems to be under the impression that this IS already available to us. This is what their write up says about WA in their Directory : "Through your avatar you can explore the great outdoors and buildings in town, and other such public areas. You can also create your own apartment, a private space where only invited guests can come. You can decorate your apartment with sofas, chairs and tables, pictures and other personal possessions." They round off by saying : "Members are encouraged to GO AWAY frequently and see what's new in the virtual community Looks like *virtual* has become synonymous with 2 D environments rather like *interactive* became fuzzy some years back. However this is always a good sign and signals the likelihood of two interpreta- tions moving ever closer to conclusion. To look closely at Rheingold's vision (we could say prediction) we can use his cultural interests to explore the reasoning behind one locale in particular -- the theatre. The fact that he was involved with FCT (known as FC then) makes me wonder whether the theatre was his idea completely or at least whether it was born of his advice. Rheingold has experienced working with both consumer and industrial based VR systems and so his assessments for the future are probably more sound than anyone else's. After all, his mixture of technology and culture has convinced the VR front end research & development teams of the high correlation between theatre, for instance, and Virtual Reality. The main difference between a real theatre and a virtual one is simply this: In a theatre you are asked to pretend to be a fly on the wall and watch events that are set in another age or place and in the virtual sense you *can* be a fly and be part of it; if the play is acted out in a castle you can be in the castle and watch from whatever viewpoint you wish. This is the attraction, but of course the atmosphere of the real thing will probably take a lot longer to accommodate. The stage is dark, a spotlight shines on center stage, the compere introduces the performance, curtains open ... Where shall we watch from ? Rheingold sums up, "... properly done a Virtual Reality experience will have a greater sense of memesis (SiC), and of participation in the events." Mimesis is what Aristotle said an audience gets out of drama and denotes the imitation or representation of human nature in art and literature. The opening of the theatre is the one that I am really looking forward to but I think that it will probably be one of the last to arrive in Kymer as the stage in Starway seems adequate for the time being. It's hard even to imagine what it will be really like, but most certainly it will be the font of culture in the foreseeable future. More immediate will be the unlocking of other locales. If you don't count the fountains, there are more locales that are unavailable than those that are open. I counted five open and five closed, but then if you look at the parks, Meditation Park is open and the Jungle, Victoria Gardens, theatre and the Blasted Heath are not. So it's easy to see how much more WA can become in time. The problem is that we can't really do much when we enter a building so if it's just a matter of programming rooms to play in then why is it taking so long to do. If Compuserve had been as slow at development, we'd all be playing tic tac toe. Let's hope that it's because FCT is designing locales that will be more than just empty rooms with interesting vendroids. The Bar-L-Bar as far as I've been able to ascertain, will be the first place where we will be able to sit down and following this should come the ability to sit down anywhere; at the fountain benches and on the V-Mart couches. What will Isle Caribe offer? Now that's an interesting one for former Caribers. Will the library be the place to get hold of ESP! and will there be a connection between it and the forum? You can see the many possibilities. Will the Blasted Heath have a speakers corner for anyone who wants to speak out, or will it become a place to walk your dog when they become available? And if we can have pets, then when will we have cars on the driveways of our turfs ? What about Regency Hall? Now there's a locale that has tremendous potential. Quite apart from a building where you might get planning permission for a turf or register your pet, it can and maybe should facilitate a courtroom. Given the crime that flourishes in Phantasus would it not make perfect sense? It would relieve FCT of the burden of implementing regulatory teams and of disciplinary enforcement. When will someone realise that the solutions to many problems are all around us. How do we combat crime in the waking world ? If FCT really does want us to sort out our own problems, then they should give us the tools to do so. Perhaps the quickest solution and the option that is much talked about, is of giving Acolytes the power to transport offending avatars to some distant locale, and while this is a good idea and will only be used by acolytes when necessary, it could lead to all sorts of disputes and the creation of new and as yet unimaginable problems, but it is the best way to start. Oracle Vaserius, however, did open a portal when he appeared last week. I've removed the avatar's name and shown only the words which the Oracle spoke regarding this matter: Oracle Vaserius: (avatar), I'm not going to mince words any longer. If you or anyone else threatens, harasses, or disrupts, they will be punished. The punishment will fit the crime. I want to let everyone know: Harassment has been tolerated long enough. Any toleration of harassment is absurd, and for that I apologize. The Acolytes will be given the powers they need to deal with a given situation. However, these powers take time ... We have been working on them for a while now. The proper tools will be implemented. To complement their powers we should consider something else too. That something else is closer to a vision of the future and something that I am suggesting right now. A new idea. Should a victim require to resolve a case at Regency Hall then the hearing would be similar to that in the WW. Transcripts and witnesses and all other evidence need presenting. Ghosts can attend, as they would in a public gallery. An elected jury will also be selected whose names must remain anonymous. If a jail sentence is pronounced (and a judge needn't be an acolyte or oracle) then the criminal will go to jail for his/her crime. Suspension of liberty is condoned in all communities as morally and practically acceptable. Our virtual community is like any other and should have the right to make law and enforce it. Unarguably, this will become an important issue when businesses too begin to exist virtually in cyberspace. How do you do time in Kymer? You get locked behind bars of course. When prisoners enter WorldsAway they see themselves in a cell through great bars on the screen, maybe there's even a clock on the wall counting down the remaining time. No one can argue that they have been denied access to WorldsAway because they are in it, playing it. Both their avatars just happen to be serving a sentence that the community has pronounced by way of law. The server is only a gateway but cyberspace belongs to all of us and as a community we will force the right to govern ourselves. Maybe that's what Howard Rheingold and FCT can glimpse, that we can't. That vision is the very essence of virtuality. - Keep Smiling - Dread :-). {} - The Elves Of Kymer - {} A Report on the many Elves of Kymer By DarkWolf Fenrier With Input from Drizzt Do'Urden Part II : The Drow or Dark Elves It seems that as I walk the streets of Kymer these days, that many an Elf I see. And all of differing species, As I am of the Elven Race myself, I have decided to ask these other Elven races to describe to you all, exactly who they are and why they differ so. My sources tell me that There are five realms of power among Elvenkind: Air: Ethereal or High Elves, the high reaches (Distance, Nobility) Earth: Forest Elves, Green, growing things, animals (Growth) Dark: Drow (dark elves), Powers of Darkness (Chaos, Magic) Water: Water Elves, Streams, lakes, seas (Change) Fire: Fire Elves, Heat, flame, passion (Warmth, Justice) This week . . . The Drow. I walked the streets until I saw, An elf of the Blackest Ebony, His Maine was of a Snow like hue, I Boldly asked his name, Drizzt Do'Urden he did reply, A grin upon his lips, I am of the Drow my friend, And this is what I say . . . . Beneath the mountains, deep and cold, in caverns made from Fungus old, the Drow do live, whose hearts do hold the Magic of a thousand fold. There are no shadows in the Underdark. Only after years on the surface have I come to understand the significance of that seemingly minute fact, the significance of the contrast between lightness and darkness. There are no shadows in the Underdark, no areas of mystery where only the imagination can go, for neither is there light . . . . There are no shadows in the Underdark. There is no room for imagination in the Underdark. It is a place for alertness, but not aliveness, a place with no room for hopes and dreams. << (R.A. Salvatore; 'Starless Night'). Sitting here, I wait for the dawn. Something I do every time I have the possibility to do so. Like the first time, when I just had escaped the Underdark, I am still fascinated at the multitude of colours that are visible when the first rays of the sun touch with their gentle fingers the countryside, slowly lifting the darkness of the night. Dawn, the rising of the sun, something we Drow quote as bad, it hurts our eyes, rips off our natural magical abilities. We Drow; no not *we*, * them* would be more appropriate. The only resemblance I do have with them is of physical nature. I do not live like them, do not respect their laws, do not feel pleasure in what they call thrills, namely intrigue and killing. I never did fit in their schemes and in their society. That's why they wanted to sacrifice me and why I ran, erring in the Underdark, and finally deciding to find the path to the surface world. Some years ago, I was part of a raiding party to the surface world. We were sent to kill and raid, a sport for the young Drow warriors. The raids were well planned, and usually the Elves were our target. Even then, I was fascinated by the surface world, although we operated in the darkness of night. I was intrigued by all the smells and the sounds of this world. There were so many that I was overwhelmed. The air that filled my lungs with every breath, was fresh and reviving. After some time of wandering the woods, we surprised an Elven party that had set camp in a clearing. My fellow warriors attacked on sight, and butchered everything crossing their path. Those elves that could, tried to defend themselves, but for most it was a swift death that awaited them. I was paralysed, could not move at what I saw. How could these beautiful creatures be so evil, as we were told. Elves, the Drow enemies since the very dawn of the world. In the Academy we are taught how evil our kindred are, and what evil they did to our race. Yes, good and evil is a very difficult discussion point, as for most it just depends on which side they are. Too much evil or good are one as dangerous and as lethal as the other. That night I left the battlefield without a single kill. When I first moved on the surface world, people showed me hatred, and at best fear. Hatred and fear for what I was, and for what my race had done to the surface dwellers. But upon arriving on Kymer and in the city of Phantasus, I was surprised. People ignored me, and did not bother because of my heritage. Some even spoke to me and bid me welcome, and a few others even asked me to tell them my story. I was fascinated by the multitude of creatures and persons walking the streets of Phantasus. Some are serious, and others are funny (even in their appearance), some are troublemakers and others are loving and caring, some are childish and playful, and others still have not found their place in this colourful community. But I have come to appreciate and respect most of them. And again I sit here, waiting for the dawn. A magical moment, starting a whole new day, casting aside the darkness, and making a place for hopes and dreams. Drizzt Do'Urden, Ranger of Mielikki ................................... Dark Elves or to use their correct names the Drow, are associated with the ancient and archaic magics of another age, an age when they roamed the surface world as a proud and noble people. A time before the great Elf War caused them to be banished to the Underdark. Here in their great Fungal Caverns, they study and practice their arts striving to one day walk the surface world again, Proud amongst their Elven Kin. Dark Elves come in two castes: true sorcerers known as the Halfin (who are powerful magic weavers), and the guardians known as Al-Halfin (Who weave minor magics to enhance their combat skills). All Drow magic is constructed from wisps of power gathered from the ether and woven into complex spell constructs which resemble spiders webs. It is these weblike constructs that have led others to believe that the Drow worship the spider goddess Lloth (an evil goddess). While it is true most have been swayed into this dark path, Some Drow worship the Goddess Elistree; a deity who wishes all elves to live as one to serve the world to further it's evolution. All Drow are strikingly handsome with dark mysterious looks that women find intriguing. They love to have fun, and hang around looking cool (they are very vain). They are very proud and cannot tolerate Insults though they have a great sense of humour and recognise Mickey taking for what it is (they love to joke). They also seem to lend aid to others when it is least expected often surprising others and leaving them speechless (but then again living in the dark brings forth many opportunities for surprise!). Thank you Drizzt for those words. So it seems that the Drow are a proud and noble race who like to look good whilst having fun, And if you impress them you might be pleasantly surprised Known Drow are: DarkWolf Fenrier, Drizzt Do'Urden, Darkhorse, Drizt Do'Urden Next Week: You asked for it! You'll get it! an expose on those Noblest of all Elves ... The Ethereal Elves. {} - The Hotel New Hampshire - {} Subtitle: A newbie's variety of thoughts By Zooey NOTE: English Translation of Das Hotel New Hampshire Untertitel: Ungeordnete Gedanken eines Neulings in "A Multilingual Phantasus" "Come as you are - as a friend" Kurt Cobain (R.I.P.) Hello to you, all you newbies and old hands (ducks, unicorns, frogs, foxes, aliens, witches and whatsoevers) who found the way to Phantasus. Don't panic!! I am not going to tell you something about the warm welcome I received, about how friendly the people are and that I felt at home very soon. Guess that's an experience everyone of you has made before - and I'm afraid that I'm not the first one to write it down on this (virtual) paper. Just one more thing: Thank you, Cat Ballou, for showing me the way to this place. And now for something completely different. Has anyone of you ever read "The Hotel New Hampshire". This book and the community of Phantasus do really have some basic elements in common: It's all about friendship, understanding, living together, tolerance - and about the realization of a dream, in spite of all the problems. The dreamscape provides a chance. We've got the possibility to create something outstanding, we can develop something that other Avatars like us built up before (oops - think i'm too emotional ). Phantasus is not the Garden of Eden, of course not. The more people joining this community, the more problems we'll be confronted with. But in contrast to the Waking World our fate is in our hands here. We all make the rules. There is just one important thing we have to care about: Do not violate anyone's personal freedom, treat the others like you want to be treated. Tolerance, of course - but tolerance ends, when somebody's feelings could be hurt (got that, HHC?). YES - FINISHED THE DIDACTIC PART On my first day in the city of Phantasus I've been astonished at all the different groups and organisations, that have been established here - SunRays, Alienytes, Foxes, Duckolytes and all the others (by the way: good luck to your new group, Foxes). "What's that?" I thought. "Same habits like everywhere else in the Waking World - elite groups and cliques?" But soon I detected that I was totally wrong. Talked to some of the Blueskins and Duckheads and recognized that they are just likeminded people who want to have some fun together, organize games and other activities or just help those around, who just stepped onto the Isle of Kymer. So, all you newbies: Explore this world, feel free to talk to everyone and ask every question (there are no stupid questions - not asking would be stupid). Therefore this German ESP! column shall NOT build up any barriers similar to those in the "Waking World" (got more than enough there). That's also the reason for this (clumsy) translation - I did it for all the non-German speaking Avatars. Just wanted to spread some of my thoughts, and it's quite difficult to do that in English (I'd like to thank Nemo and especially you, Brynne, for encouraging me!). Besides I think that some of you would not say that English is your mother tongue and would like to read some lines in German. And now - what do you think: Is there any need for a german ESP!-article from time to time? I'm looking forward to your criticism and your proposals (email: 101552.3560). Last but not least let me present myself as a know-it-all (or does it make me appear to be a 14-carat-idiot, coz everybody knew it but me?): The word "Avatar" belongs to the hinduistic mythology and it means "descent to earth of a deity in human or animal form" - think the programmers did a good job here, eh? (and I've got a good encyclopedia) That's it for now, folks. Have a great time in the dreamscape - and keep passing the open windows. -- See you soon. -Zooey :-) {} - New Redwall Village, temporarily disbanded- {} By Andy Smith, human companion to Roga Mae & Ali Quid, ferrets at large The Redwall Charter has been posted in the Kymer Clarion. It speaks of a place written of by Brian Jacques, a place of "... Brothers and Sisters of peace and goodwill, living together in harmony..." The ideals and practices of the 'Redwallers' as depicted of in the books describe 'gentlebeasts' of honesty and integrity. I could not justify in my own mind trying to bring Brian Jacques wonderful work into WorldsAway, or on the internet, without some sort of permission or legal basis. Redwall Abbey does not belong to me, I can't take it for my own. Rather than be dishonest, and try to 'sneak' it into existence, I have decided it is best to hear from professionals who can secure permission for what can and can not be done in the context of WorldsAway. In addition, Redwall Abbey was populated by 'gentlebeasts' who either already knew the way of life they have chosen, or they were tutored in it before they actually became adopted as it's citizens. Truly, there were woodlanders like the Gussim Shrews who espoused the ideas, but with much bickering among themselves, true to their way of life, and true to their wanderlust, they would camp in Redwall for the winter only. Their love for the river took them back into Mossflower, and not without some relief to Redwallers. There were also those, such as Dandin and Mariel, with a thirst for adventure, who would wonder away from Redwall Abbey. Tree-rose, and Tom, squirrels who visited Redwall, but never stayed. Even for those who espoused the ideals of Redwall Abbey, really had their 'home' set in a slightly different place. But they knew that, and things could be worked out. As New Redwall Village as I called it progressed, I found I did not do proper planning or organization to it. We did not have officers, those who would fill certain roles to help maintain the basic proper functioning of an organization. We didn't have anything to be certain that those who are interested would be properly schooled in what Redwall Abbey, hence New Redwall Village was to be about. We also has a lack of communication among each other. After several nervous weeks, I decided I would rather disband for a season than wait for problems. That isn't fair to those who would be 'Redwallers', and those of WorldsAway we would serve. I wish to thank those who are interested, and I do ask that if you *are* interested in the ideas of Redwall Abbey, as portrayed by Brian Jacques, I ask you contact me. While we are waiting for legal footing, I will be asking for those who have read the Redwall series to contact me. We will come back, with 'officers' who have a function and purpose spelled out, and the function and purpose of these 'New Redwallers' will be better defined than what I have fumbled through. If we can, *legally*, we will be New Redwall Abbey. If not, we will do what we can, but we will do it 'legally' with no shame or hiding about it. And we will promote it as a functioning organization with a specific set of goals in mind, and the drive and determination to get us there. If you have any questions, or you would like to see what can be done while we wait on legal advice, please contact me at redwall@ai2a.net. Thank you. under the protection of New Redwall Abbey, forsaking all unnecessary forms of violence, not only to Phantasus, its trees, grasses, flowers and insects, but to all living creatures. to help and comfort the dispossessed, harbor orphans and waifs, offer shelter to all creatures alike give clothing, warmth and food to any beast or creature that is deemed in need of such. to educate and learn, particularly in the healing arts, comfort the sick, nurse the injured and help the wounded. to take our food from the earth and replenish the land by caring for it, husbanding crops and living in harmony with the seasons always to honor and protect our friends and brethren, only raising paw to do battle when our life at New Redwall is threatened by treachery and the shadow of war; at these times every New Redwall creature should show courage, fortitude and obedience to Chief Guide Albeit the taking of another life must always be justified and never carried out in a wanton manner. To this we commit our selves, our families, our possessions to everybeast of New Redwall Village in reverence of creature to Creator Who gave us all, and to Whom all belongs An additional portion of text gives some insight into our purpose and our distinctive character among all the other groups within Worlds Away: ". . . there is always room for you here. Our Village is a place of friendship. Anyone, young or old, who as read or heard of Redwall may come and visit us. If you are honest and of good heart, no matter what the season our door is open to you. Whether for the first time, or for the return of an old companion, you are welcome. Please feel free to visit us anytime you pass by this way." [adapted from _Martin the Warrior_, Brian Jacques] {} - The Witching Hour- {} By Witchy Lucky Hand Spell The Lucky Hand Spell is another standard wanga. It is a specific type of charm bag, made to "give a hand" to the person using it. It has the effect of making your life a bit easier by bringing you good fortune and opportunity. This particular spell comes from the North Carolina Gulta practice. Three herbs must be gathered and prepared for the charm. First is a sand burr, the seed of the sand nettle. Second is a piece of Sampson snakeroot, which must be broken off, not cut with a knife. Third is a piece of devil's shoestrings, or goat's rue. These three herbs are wrapped in a small piece of black cloth, which is then sewn closed all around with white thread. The stitches in the packet should be as small as possible. The packet is set to soak in a small glass of whiskey, either all day or overnight. It is then taken out and prayed over. The whiskey is left to evaporate in the glass. The finished charm is placed in a charm bag or a leather bag. It can be talked to for any specific request which you want to make of it. This charm brings opportunities; it will not do the work required to bring them to fruition. Love Spell This is a rather well-known love spell. It is popular, and it works. If you use this spell, remove the red charm bag before having sex, but hide it. Take two sewing needles of the same size, and lay them side by side, with the point of one at the eye of the other. Wrap the two needles in the leaf of a comfrey plant, or any other green leaf that has been newly picked. Tie this bundle with a piece of red wool yarn. Place the finished packet in either a red fabric or a chamois skin bag. It is then worn around your neck to gain the affection of the one you desire. The charm may be removed from the bag only to break it, which is done by breaking the two needles at the same time. If it is desired to "feed" the charm for a specific person, it should be fed through the opened bag with three drops of whiskey. It can be prayed over at this time to tell it who it is you wish to influence. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the subject matter of magick, channeling, spells, candles, incense, baths, etc. please feel free to send E-Mail to me at 104072,655. Blessed * Be -- Witchy {} - Possession Swaps!- {} By Sparhawk To those needing the guard service Mufasa wrote about in Issue 3 of ESP!, let me explain how I do it: 1. If you need my help, I will try to use one of the 2-person temple rooms to allow you to change possessions around. These seem to be pretty stable areas - provided we're careful about the number of open containers! 2. If they are not available, then we try for a 3-person room and you or I get the third TRUSTED person in with us. Again more stable than V-Mart and stuff. 3. If that fails, we'll use a locale with you, me and 5 other TRUSTED persons - one of whom will be ghosted in case of a crash (or I'll ghost and monitor as I have a fairly stable P100 system, so that shouldn't be a problem). The choice will be yours. All of these were mentioned in Mufasa's excellent write-up, but I wish this public, so the ladies will not be mistaking any requests for 'going to the temple' If you're switching possessions to another avatar, I have no problem holding them for you at all. My pockets aren't unlimited, but I do maintain a few open slots. {} - Thoughts to Think About- {} By Werewolf "The word" is already put out in WA itself; many kind avatars greet all those who look like newbies and warn them not to trust anyone who asks to borrow their property - I always do - and there is no need to mention ignoble avatars by name. Some avatars are even kind enough to spend online time at VC doing just this on their own initiative. Would all those in WA with a good heart like to undertake to donate 30 minutes each week doing just this at VC, NuYu and the promenade? It could be arranged through ESP! and I'd be the first to sign up an empty slot - not an empty promise, I assure you. You can bet your booties that the avatars in question read the two newspapers just to see their names in print. We don't know who they all are in RW, but if we decline to discuss them or respond to invective, they will get very frustrated. There is a suspicion at the back of my mind that too many good-hearted avatars have been suckered by these guys into fueling the fire. It's elementary psychology and it has worked in spades. There is no-one so easily led than someone who believes passionately that he is doing right! I'm a cynic who believes that good does win in the end; the cynicism protects me from self delusion about my own importance & from harm by others and the optimism makes it worth getting up in the morning. If anyone is horribly frustrated by their experiences with negative types in WA, they should talk with friends and clarify the issues in their own minds. Personally, I'm always happy to spend the time it takes to cheer people up with a jokey reply and some TLC (typed loving care). Share your hurt or anger directly with those who are your friends - that's why they are your friends. Better results will be arrived at by having compassion for those most at risk - young children and naive newbies - rather than satisfying the desires of some jerks to wind people up and let them go. If people do lose their heads or other property, offer charity. We could all donate a spare token or two to the acolytes as a comfort fund for those who suffer a rip-off. Again, I'm happy to set the ball rolling because I don't feel the need to own anything in WA - I come in unencumbered by possessions and leave that way. I occasionally buy something in the prospect of giving it to someone who strikes me as funny or caring but that's it. If someone gives a small present to me, I give it away later as amusingly and unoffensively as I can. If someone offered me a large present, I'd decline because the implicit offer of friendship or comity is valued at a hundred thousand times the material worth. Having said that, I'm not at all critical of those who show affection by swapping presents - it's very touching to see it. I'm merely expressing my own philosophy here, not advocating something. As a relevant aside, has anyone read Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco and is familiar with the arguments that raged in the early Christian church? There were those who said that poverty is the expectation of the truly good (because the prophet Jesus Christ declared and demonstrated that money can be used selflessly to aid those in more need than yourself) and those whose innate selfishness led them to oppose this viewpoint? The analogy for WA is that the more we avatars seek to comfort others through self-sacrifice, the less influence the jerk-offs will have. They may be able to pawn their ill-gotten gains and achieve material wealth and a degree of malign satisfaction, but they aren't using WA to its highest potential and certainly aren't getting from it the same intrinsic value the rest of us do. I wonder if it may be our own negativity, anger and despair driving people away. "A kiss on the nose does much to turn aside anger", as a famous philosopher once said. {} - The KYMER Event Host- {} By Chief Duckolyte Brains Many do not realize what is involved in hosting any game here in Kymer. I can certainly understand where a misunderstanding can occur. Someone could ESP with a question and not get an answer. Maybe some do not realize that they are not the only one ESPing you and a question can get easily lost. Hosting is not as relaxing as it may appear. Let me take a minute to explain what a KYMER Bingo host must do before he even starts to display the numbers. He/She must track each individual's bet. If the host is playing odds, then they must constantly recalculate odds. If they are playing the POT, then they must keep a running tab of the pot. S/he must answer many questions. They must individually get the cards registered from each player, and move them over as authorized players. S/he must then crosscheck to make sure that the players who have paid are all registered. This must be done in a very short period of time. Hope this creates some empathy and understanding for those who feel they are not getting the response they think they deserve. We have lost some excellent Bingo Hosts such as German Giant because people do not understand this and show little respect for the host. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :: The Week in Review :: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: {} - Alayne, Storyteller of the Dreamscape- {} By Earendil On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, Alayne, the Official Storyteller of Phantasus, honored the Dreamscape with thrilling and wondrous tales from Kymer's history. On Wednesday evening, she reprised the tale of the founding of Phantasus in "The Great Betrayal", an accounting of how the Lord of Dreams was betrayed by his brothers. On Thursday and Friday, she told the two-part love story of Morpheus and Nime. The latter epic she dedicated to the memory of her soul's sister, Nada, and to the love of the first couple in Kymer, Elwing and Earendil. Recounting her stories of magic, mortals, gods, and passions in the shadow of Cupid's statue, Alayne was heard by over 25 avatars each evening, including Oracle Vaserius all three nights. At the conclusion of her final presentation Friday night, Earendil made the following short presentation to Alayne: "Alayne, you have greatly honored the Dreamscape these past three nights, with wondrous tales of Morpheus and the history of Kymer. Even more, you have both honored and humbled Elwing and myself, by dedicating the love story of Morpheus and Nime to *our* love. On behalf of the community of Phantasus, I offer this simple song in *your* honor:" On Dream-Sewn Wings On thee, lovely Alayne, doth Morpheus smile, Weaver of dreams, renowned for your style, With a voice so pure, We can e'er endure To hearken anon, and listen awhile. Storyteller Alayne, so full of tales, Glides on the wind, that fills Argo's sails. The stories she brings, On Dream-Sewn Wings, Will echo forever, from hills and vales. Beloved Alayne, you honor us all: Avatar, Oracle, great and small. We honor *you* now, And kiss your brow, We thank you for heeding Morpheus' call. So often we walk through life forgetting our brothers and sisters who share our love, joy and longing. We forget the miracles, the random acts of kindness that bring us all together. We think we are separated from one another feeling only what is inside ourselves, not realizing how each one of us is a part of the whole, intertwined and connected. It is our hope this special sharing will awaken our higher selves, if only for a moment, so that we may glimpse the brilliant light and beauty that shines radiantly within each of us. Every miracle, every tear, we experience is a part of the whole in which we all reside. Many joined the Knights to share a miracle, a mystical poem or enlightening experience. All present began to understand that we are all the same, every miracle, every tear, we experience is a part of the whole in which we all reside. Special awards were presented to those bringing and sharing their most favorite poem or short story - related to the theme of the evening. The races will be moved indoors next week, and permanently due to heavy road traffic outside Isle Caribe. The new location is the Starway Stage. This was the group consensus. Sorry, we have to break tradition, but it looks like the newbie boat from ARGO gets in during the races . The hordes of newbies coming in has caused too many delays to continue as tradition would allow. {} - Duckolyte TriviaMaster - {} By Chief Duckolyte Brains St. Patrick's Day was the official kick-off day for Duckolyte TriviaMaster. The debut was a huge success! The event drew 45 avatars with 38 playing to the end. The topic was "World Facts". All questions in this game have multiple choice answers, which means that if you are terrible at Trivia Games normally, you have a chance here simply by making a guess . I think that contributed to its success. This week's winners were as follows: Chris Brown won First Place winning a Leprechaun Head (actually a rare Cute_ Elf_Head painted with rare green). Unga-Bunga won Second Place winning a Flower_Head(painted rare green). Leadman won Third Place winning a Duck_Head (painted rare green). Each winner also received a Heart Chest with matching rare body paints. Third prize was not an easy decision. We had to go to extra questions to determine if TexWilly Wonka or Leadman would win. Leadman came out on top this week, but something tells me that TexWilly will be back to defend his honor. The Monthly Champion is determined by the following point system: 1st Place = 5 Points 2nd Place = 3 Points 3rd Place = 2 Points 4th Place = 1 Point The Monthly standings are as follows: Chris Brown 5 Points Unga-Bunga 3 Points Leadman 2 Points TexWilly Wonka 1 Point Due to the tremendous response of this event, we have modified the program to shorten the time it takes to display all individuals who have scored correctly on a question. Scoring is administered by a new program developed by Wert P Gumby. Both PCs and Macs can play. We are using the following options: First Answer is the only one to count. ESP answers can only be accepted after the fourth Choice is presented. We also score points based on how quickly you answer correctly. Points are awarded as follows: First=4 points, Second=3 points, Third=2 points, and all other correct answers equal 1 point each. This event is fun and fast paced. Special prizes are awarded to the top three finishers every week. Special Monthly Prize is awarded to the individual with the most points. Door Prizes are provided every week. Door Prizes include rare items, tokens, and items from vendos. All are welcome to join in the fun. The event is held on Sundays, 7:00pm WAT at Starway Stage. No Entry Fees are required. This week's topic is General Purpose Knowledge (a little of every- thing). Coming weeks topics will include: Entertainment, Travel, World History, Movies, TV, Music, Record Books, US History, Geography, Sports, Quotes, People, Business, Books, Government, Laws, Nations, States, and much more. ----- {} - MAD Winners!- {} By Acolyte Brynne All week long, Libra, Nicci and I have been opening MAD chests. Kurt Cobain (R.I.P.) And now for something completely different. We had many good ideas, I wish we could use them all. The Winner is Marianne G., who will be presented with an engraved Baby Bear for her excellent idea. I can't say that I am surprised by fact that she has won. She has proven herself in the past to be one of our most creative game creators. Congratulations Marianne. ****** Her idea is this: For a monthly prize, it requires that this game be played once a week.... with the prize being determined from among the 4 or 5 winners of that month. No avatar is allowed to win more then one game per month, and for a chance at the monthly prize, they must attend the last game of the month. I call my game: THE KYMER SHELL GAME Objectives of the Game: Be the first to TAG (Click on them and choose the selection FOLLOW) the Duckolyte with the lockable chest. The Follow command allows the Duckolyte tag to be able to tell, in the case of more then one avatar tagging them, who tagged first. If that Duckolyte is the one with the lockable chest in their possession (or the one with the WINNING lockable chest (see variations below), then the first one to tag them wins that week, and is eligible to go for the monthly prize. Rules of the game and game play: All players and duckolytes start from one area, that is also the regroup area for the end of the game. The duckolytes start on the ground, showing off the chest or chests and passing them from one to the other... This gives the ghosted players a chance to see which duckolytes are to be hunted down in the Duckolyte Hunt if you will (which is another game entirely - not needing a lockable chest......but I digress). There should be one Master of Ceremony for the game, perhaps with a helper, taking down the names of all those who are playing. Names should be taken as they arrive, and placed in wave groups. With first coming getting the chance to go out and search faster then those who arrive late. This is not only to insure that the players arrive on time, but also to help crowd control. One Master of Ceremony on the ground, would mean five avatars per wave. (Which is not to be confused with a WAVE competition, which again is a totally different team sport). The Master of Ceremony should have a written record of who is playing, in what wave and should make sure players are NOT blocking ESP so they can be called in, by the Master and helper, at the end of the game. When all is ready, the Master shouts Go! and the chosen Duckolytes pocket their chest or chests and head out into the wilds of the city. Then the Master reiterates the rules of play, (giving the chosen ones time to get lost) and starts to call the waves down. They are called down in order, Wave 1 being first, and after the Master has verified that all members are there, he sends them out to the hunt. This part is what insures that the avatars do not simply follow the duckolytes out. You know they are there at the start of the race, as they have to BECOME AN AVATAR to screen before they can start to race. A simple STATUS check of WHO'S HERE will verify you have them and their names right. Then, you wait for the chosen one to announce that he's been caught which is the signal for the Master and helper to start ESPing all to return to the start point for the opening of the trunk and the presentation of the prize. Chosen Duckolytes can: 1) Pass off the winning trunk to another chosen duckolyte 2) Hide behind other avatars 3) Change their colors to disguise themselves - or even heads if you wish to allow this (just make sure the avatars are aware of this if so) They can not: 1) Hide in changing rooms 2) Remain ghosted - if they are forced to ghost, they must move to another location and unghost as soon as possible 3) Block Following unless tagged. 4) Remove or change heads unless this is allowed and announced at the start. (After all, this is not a Sadie Hawkins Race - which we held at CHAOS, Inc and it was well received but that's another story) When a Duckolyte is tagged, they may block following. Then they announce who tagged them first, and announce if that person is the winner or not. If they are not the winner, that person has to remain on the ground, until the duckolyte ghosts. The duckolyte is allowed, once tagged, to move to a different locale, not more then two to three regions away, and then can unghost, make sure following is enabled and continue with the game. Multiple Chest Version - If you have more then one similar chest - assuming that they are the numbered lockable chest and can therefore be distinguished with an ID - you can have several of them being held by the Duckolytes, with only one being the winner! In the start of the game, you show them the winning chest as they watch in the clouds, toss it to one of the duckolytes, and then, as they begin tossing it back and forth, they start taking others out of their pockets and tossing them around also. Letting the avatars in the cloud try to keep track of which chest is the winning one. Then when GO is called, they all pocked their chests and head off. Did you follow that winning chest right? Can you find that Duckolyte before he exchanges it with another? It's all part of the shell game. Monthly Championship Shell Game: At the end of the month, when you have your winners for the month, after the last game, all the winners are allowed to come down out of the cloud. One chest for each winner is placed on the ground. With their numbers called out as they are put down. Chest #1, Chest #2. etc. this puts the Chest number above the chest in the voice bubbles so they can be more easily identified by a scroll back by the players if needed. Then, starting with the winner of the last race of the month, and go back to the first winner of the month, they choose one of the chests by number. They can not pick one that has already been picked. Then the Master of Ceremony opens them one at a time. enabling all to see if they are empty. or if the monthly prize is hiding in that chest. Yes, it's a shell game to the very end with the monthly winner not being decided by Computer speed but by pure luck! Which we all know, is a Duck with it's D cut off and an L put in it's place. *** I think this contest is a great idea, I hope you all agree. We are making arrangements as we speak to get this underway. We may try it once at first as a big event, using the multiple chests options, and see what would be required to make it into a weekly event. Something tells me this would be very popular, which means that keeping this game under two hours may be tough . It may be spread out over a week with the final races on the weekend with all winners. Please watch for upcoming announcements regarding this game and other new ones in development. The Duckolytes are committed to providing an enjoyable environment in Kymer. Marianne G., I will make arrangements to get this special prize to you. Perhaps at one of the weekly events already sponsored by the Duckolytes, or at your earliest convenience. Congratulations, and thank-you once again. {} - Knights of Kymer: Group Information - {} By SunRay Render Greetings fellow Kymerians!
