Commander Honor Harrington of the Royal Manticoran Navy has been exiled by a superiror officer who she made to look foolish. Now she is in charge of an average light cruiser, patrolling a godforsaken quadrant, blamed by her crew for their exile... UK: Beyond Heaven's River by Greg Bear. Publisher: Victor Gollancz Millennium £6.99 Published 8 June 2000 Kawashita had passed up the chance to die honourably, to go down with the mortally wouned carrier Hiryu. And when the alien spacecraft plucked him from the sea near Midway, he was sure he'd made the wrong choice: now he would certainly die, but it would be alone and without honmour. But the aliens did not kill him. Instead, they gave him a world of his own, a world in which he was supreme master, able to recreate and alter history, to indulge in any fantasy. Then suddenly, he was once again amongst humans -- for whom World War II was a half-forgotten memory, four cneturies past... UK: SF Masterworks 30: A Case of Conscience by James Blish. Publisher: Victor Gollancz Millennium £6.99 Published 8 June 2000 Father Raimon Ruiz-Sanchez S.J. is part of a four man scientific commission to the planet Lithia, there to study a harmonious society of aliens living on a planet which is a biologist's paradise. He soon finds himself troubled: how can these perfect beings, living in an apparent Eden, have no concept of sin or God? And, if such a sinless Eden has been created apart from God, then who is responsible? James Blish was born in New Jersey in 1921. Drafted during World War II he served until 1944 as a medical technician and on returing to the United States he re-enroled at Columbia and joined the Furutirains. Moving to England in 1969 he continued to write, and earned high praise for his adaptations of the original Star Trek series into short stories, working in a pre-video age and blending the original scripts with the final transmitted versions. He was the first author to have an original Star Trek novel, Spock Must Die, published, which is worth tracking down if only for its amusing discussions between leading crew members about the possibilities of teleportation in the creation of matter, which the series itself has always avoided! UK: Fantasy Masterworks 6: The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny Victor Gollancz Millennium £7.99. Published 15 June 2000 Amber is the one real world, casting infinite reflections of itself -- Shadow worlds, which can be manipulated by those of royal Amberite blood. But the royal family is torn apart by jealoousies and suspicion; the disappearance of the Patriarch Oberon has intensified the internal conflict by leaving the throne apparently up for grabs. In a hospital on the Shadow Earth, a young man is recovering from a freak accident; amnesia has robbed him of all his memory, even the fact that he is Corwin, Crown Prince of Amber, rightful heir to the throne -- and he is in deadly peril... Here together in one volume are the first five books which make up the Chronicles of Amber -- Nine Princes in Amber, The Guns of Avalon, Sign of the Unicorn. The Hand of Oberon and The Courts of Chaos. Roger Zelazny was one of the pioneers of 'new wave' science fiction exploring evnts and characters internally rather than externally using psychology, sociology and lingusitics, often expressed using mythology as a structure -- Lord of Light being a classic example of this. He wrote over 150 short stories and 50 books, winning Nebulas and Hugos along the way. Zelazny wrote 10 books in the Amber sequence, a veritable feast of alternate worlds and magic, and today they are considered to be some of his finest work, influencing many readers. Zelazny died in 1995. UK: A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold Earthlight (Simon & Schuster) £6.99 Hugo Award Nominee, the latest Miles Vorkosigan novel. UK: Crown of Silence: Magravandias Chronicles Book Two by Storm Constantine Gollancz Millennium £9.99. Published 29 June 2000 in hardback and trade paperback. UK: The Immortal by Roger Zelazny. Victor Gollancz Millennium Conrad Nomikos has a long, rich personal history that he'd rather not talk about. He has also been given a job he'd rather not do. Escorting an alien grandee on a guided tour around the shattered remains of Earth after a catastrophic nuclear war is not something he relishes. Especially when it rapidly becomes clear that he is at the centre of high-level intrigue that could determine the future of earth itself. But Conrad Nomikos is a very special guy and he's been around -- for a very long time. UK: Mindbridge by Joe Haldeman. Victor Gollancz Millennium Jacque LeFarve is a tamer -- a member of one of the tough and honed exploration teams that, since the dramatic discovery of the Levant-Meyer Translation, humankind has been able to send to the stars. And Jacque's first world is the second planet out from Groombridge 1618. It isn't an especially promising place; the planets accompanying small stars rarely pan out. But the strange and mysterious creature that Jacque and his colleagues find there, with its gift of telepathy, leads to contact with the alien and enigmatic L'vrai and confronts humankind with an awesome opportunity -- and appaling danger... Described by writer Spider Robinson as "A genuine masterpiece". Important Note: Ansible 158 revealed this yellowjacket' reissue cunningly follows the 1980s Futura edition which lost the final Chapter 53! UK: Nostralia by Cordwainer Smith. Victor Gollancz Millennium The discovery of the stroom, a drug that confers near immortality on humans, has made Old North Australia rich. So rich that when Rod McBan has to flee the planet because someone wants him dead, he buys Earth. His picaresque adventures on Old Earth offer an exuberant, eccentric and wildly imaginative vision of the universe -- a vision like no other. UK:Queen of Angels by Greg Bear. Publisher: Victor Gollancz Millennium £6.99 Published 8 June 2000 In a world of wonders, wealth and 'perfect' metal health, a famous poet commits gruesome murder. Why? That crime and that question lead a biotransformed policewoman to a jungle of torture and forgotten gods; a writer to the bohemian shadows of a vast city; and a scientist directly into the mind -- into the nightmare soul -- of the psychopath himself. This is science fiction at its best: a detective story, a story of virtual reality entrapments and the coming of consciousness of an Artifical Intelligence. UK: Sea Dragon Heir: Magravandias Chronicles Book One by Storm Constantine Gollancz Millennium £9.99. Published 1 June 2000 UK: Tangents by Greg Bear. Publisher: Victor Gollancz Millennium £6.99 Published 8 June 2000 Tangents was Greg Bear's second collection of short stories and includes two tales that won both Hugo and Nebula Awards: the title story Tangents, a remarkable account of contact with beings of another dimension, and the roiginal short version of contact with beings from another dimension, and the original short version of his classic novel Blood Music. UK: The Wanderer by Fritz Leiber. Victor Gollancz Millennium All eyes are watching the eclipse of the Moon when the Wanderer came. Only a few scientists had even suspected its presence, and then, suddenly, it was there, dwarfing and threatening the Moon and wreaking havoc with Earth's tides and weather. The huge, Garishly coloured artificial world had only stopped in the solar syatem to refuel but its mere presence is a catastrophe for the inhabitants of Earth, who all struggle in their different ways to survive the climactic chaos it unleashes.
